| New York Yankees At Boston Red Sox...Games 10, 11, 12...***THE RETURN OF BIG PAPI*** | | 2008-07-25 04:46:00 | | Fenway Park will be in a festive and slightly combative mood Friday night as the Yankees, who are only three games in back of Boston and Tampa Bay, invade the old ballpark that is the home of the world champion Boston Red Sox. And the Red Sox will have a familiar bat in the lineup for the first time in what seems like ages. His name is David Ortiz, but we know him better as Big Papi. OUR Big Papi. What an ovation he'll get when he strides to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. In fact, I'll be standing too, hands banging together with a huge smile on my face! His teammate, JD Drew, had this to say about Big Papi's return...“It’s like getting a huge trade at the deadline,” Drew said. “It’s David Ortiz. You’re not going to take that for granted for sure.”“We’re in a fighting position without one of the two biggest pieces of the lineup,” he said. The timing couldn't be any better for a big bat and a huge personality to return for the rest of the season and (hop | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | ***BIG PAPI DAVID ORTIZ MAKES HIS DEBUT IN PAWTUCKET WITH A BANG.*** | | 2008-07-18 05:09:00 | | Big Papi David Ortiz is back, and back with a boom and a zing and a bang. He played for the Pawtucket Red Sox Thursday and went one for three, including a bullet-like home run that zipped out of the park in an flash. Ron Johnson, the Pawtucket manager, had this to say..."I didn't even see the home run. It must've been a laser because it was low and all I could see was the crowd screaming and I saw the right fielder turn and I said, 'That's probably gone' because I'm thinking about the balls he hit off me in BP and I'm going 'If he hit it and he squared it up, this ballpark ain't going to hold him.' After talking with him afterwards, he didn't have any problems with the swing. That's really good stuff right there. We'll see how he is tomorrow and I'm sure he'll be fine and we'll go out and do it again.Peter here, and that is SUCH great news, or as Johnson said, "really good stuff." | | Wakefield Is On A Roll...Big Papi Is Tentatively Scheduled To Return On July 25...Boston 12 Baltimore 1 | | 2008-07-13 04:00:00 | | Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox is on a roll...there's no denying it. Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, he was nearly unhittable for seven innings, only giving up a third inning solo home run while allowing just two hits and one earned run. He walked one. It was vintage Wakefield at his baffling and beautiful best. Boston won the game easily by a score of 12-1. Here's what his manager had to say, as well as the man himself and ex-teammate Kevin Millar...“I think that’s actually the best I’ve seen him pitch,” said Francona, who had to leave Wakefield off the World Series roster last fall because of lingering back and shoulder problems. “He worked hard to stay where he is. When last year ended, and he wasn’t able to pitch, it was very important to him to come back and take the ball when it’s his turn.”“I was the beneficiary of a lot of runs scored tonight,” Wakefield said. “So that made my job a lot easier after the third inning.""He’s the most underrated pit | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | Big Papi as the Sultan of Swat in the House That Ruth Built? Odd. | | 2008-06-09 16:46:55 | | I was in Chicago last week, covering the Kane County Cougars for A Minor Consideration, the MVN site where I cover the A’s minor league system. Since it’s Chicago, I couldn’t help but attend a game at the best ballpark on earth — Wrigley Field.

| | Big Papi Out 4-6 Weeks...Baltimore 6 Boston 3 | | 2008-06-03 04:15:00 | | The Boston Red Sox suffered a double loss on Monday when they learned that their DH supreme Big Papi David Ortiz will be out anywhere from 4-6 weeks (or more) with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. If that sounds bad to you, well, it is. Sean Casey had this to say when he learned of his teammate's injury. Also included is a detailed description of what a "tendon sheath" is..."Man, those are your weapons, your hands are your weapons, your wrist, everything, those are your weapons," said Sean Casey, whose playing time is likely to spike with Ortiz headed to the disabled list.Ortiz is out with what the team is calling a partial tear of the sheath that keeps in place the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon, which governs the action of extending and adducting the wrist. That clicking sound Ortiz heard was the ECU tendon snapping over the bone because it had slipped out of its groove."Once you lose your hands, there's not much you can do," said Casey, who tore cartilage in the same | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| Thom's Own "Big Papi" | | 2008-03-12 15:02:00 | | During the 2007 season, I saw a guy at Professor Thom's one night that made me do a double take. He was wearing a David Ortiz jersey, and the resemblance he bore to the Red Sox slugger was simply scary. His name is Chris Johnson, a native of Massachusetts who currently lives in the New York area. I remember saying to my friends, "Hey, David Ortiz is here!" I got to meet Chris, and he's just like Big Papi, even personality-wise. He's a big, hulking guy with a broad smile and very outgoing personality. Just a sweetheart of a guy.I saw Chris many times during the season, and he always greeted me with a wide smile. It was fun watching a game with him, especially when Ortiz did something big. I remember Papi hit a mammoth home run one night, and it seemed like most people in the bar looked at him and "thanked" him for the home run. All Chris could do was smile and say "you're welcome" or "it was my pleasure."Now it appears our "secret" about Chris has gotten out, as the Bangor Daily News di | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | | Our Big Big Papi, David Ortiz, Wins The Silver Slugger Award....Again!! | | 2007-11-10 05:46:00 | | For his position as DH, our David Ortiz has won the Silver Slugger award. Again!! Congrats, David. You KNOW how much we love you! Oh...the latest, on this cold November weekend, on Mike Lowell, from the Boston Globe......"Lowell and the Sox appear to be within striking distance of an agreement, the major issue remaining three years vs. four. The Sox are willing to go for a three-year deal, a major step for them; Lowell's side believes four years (at approximately $56 million) is attainable in the open market.Epstein, who is back in Boston after this week's general managers' meetings in Orlando, Fla., characterized yesterday as quiet. He said he exchanged messages with the Levinson brothers, Lowell's agents, and they agreed to keep talking this weekend. Lowell can begin negotiating with other teams starting Tuesday."Peter here, and little steps sometime morph into GIANT steps, but insisting on four years would undermine my belief that Mike wants to return to the Sox. | | Big Papi Walk Off Wonder | | 2007-09-13 12:07:00 | | For the first time this year, Big Papi David Ortiz hit a walk off home run to propel the Boston Red Sox to another come from behind victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The final score was 5-4 good guys. It was Papi's 2nd home run of the night. He hit a three run shot in the third inning to pull the Sox within a run at 4-3. Jon Lester had a disastrous outing, giving up 4 first innings runs and only lasting 3 2/3 innings total. In that short span he gave up 8 hits and walked 4 in addition to that crooked first inning number. He's been on and off, good and bad all season, but so have Wakefield and Daisuke. They represent 60% of the team's starting pitching rotation, and that spells trouble for the post season. And with the Yankees winning their 7th straight last night over the Blue Jays, this three game weekend series coming up after today's off day looms large, huge in fact.Manny Ramirez took BP before the game last night, and if he does not suffer a setback today when he again swings | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | "Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits" | | 2007-05-22 19:04:00 | | Recently I picked up a copy of "Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits" by David Ortiz and Tony Massarotti, the Red Sox writer for the Boston Herald. When you pick up these kind of books, you always approach them with a sense of caution. Many times, these are "knockoff books, " written to exploit the market and make a quick buck from a celebrity who's hot at the moment.I remember in April 2005 when I picked up the book "Idiot," the book about Johnny Damon, written by Peter Golenbock. That book was absolutely one of the sloppiest written and badly edited books I have ever read in my life. It was loaded with not just typos but facts that the author simply got wrong. It was an embarrassingly bad book, quickly put together to exploit Damon's new found popularity after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. (And I wrote this about "Idiot" while Damon was still with the Sox, so don't accuse me of sour grapes because Judas went to New York!)So when I heard that David Ortiz had come | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
