Bills news and notes; five cuts to be made Tuesday
    2008-08-26 07:09:20
Tuesday marks the first day of cuts in the NFL, and as a result, the Buffalo Bills will be releasing five players by the end of the day today.  The team must trim five off of its current roster of 80 to reach the NFL maximum of 75; the team will then play its final pre-season game Thursday at home against Detroit, and cut its roster down to 53 by the end of the business day August 30. Anyone care to take any guesses as to who the five Bills cut today will be?  I'd love to hear some predictions in the comments section; here's my prediction: RB Dwayne Wright, WR C.J. Hawthorne, DE Derrick Jones, DT Teraz McCray and CB Kennard Cox will be ex-Bills by day's end. Fantasy Football!Just a quick reminder that two Buffalo Rumblings fantasy leagues hold their drafts today.  The Rumblings Premiere League will hold its draft tonight at 9:30; RL2 will beat us to the punch and draft first at 8:00; and RL3 has foregone the sanctity of pre-season football to draft during the Bills/Lions

If Bills must cut a corner, James should go
    2008-08-25 10:30:07
Youboty, rookies pushing James off roster? (Photo Source) One of the more intriguing positional battles that the Buffalo Bills were keeping tabs on heading into training camp was the battle going on for five - perhaps six - slots at cornerback.  The Bills had three incumbents, a free agent addition, and three drafted rookies battling for spots on the team - and given the unique situations of players like Jabari Greer, Ashton Youboty and Leodis McKelvin, there were plenty of story lines to follow at the position. Now, a month has passed since the onset of that battle, and not surprisingly, there have been some surprises, some disappointments and some depth chart shuffling at the position.  We're three games into the pre-season, which means roster cut-downs are looming.  We've seen enough from the top six corners on Buffalo's roster to boil the battle down to one fact: if the Bills feel they must cut a cornerback and keep only five on the roster, it's veteran Will James t

    Bills/Colts: What to Watch For
    2008-08-24 08:20:00
DT Williams fighting off S. Johnson for starting role (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills have made the trip to Indianapolis, where they are set to take on the Colts in tonight's pre-season game at the newly constructed - and absolutely gorgeous - Lucas Oil Stadium.  The Bills will be without three key players - QB Trent Edwards, WR James Hardy and WR Roscoe Parrish - for this matchup, and the Colts are missing some starters as well, most prominently QB Peyton Manning. Despite the starters missing the one pre-season game that's important to a team's growth - especially a team as young as the Bills - there will still be some positional battles and players in unique positions that we'll be keeping an eye on.  We sincerely hope that you'll join us for tonight's open thread; here's what we'll be watching for: Hamdan vs. Baker: It has become excruciatingly obvious that the Bills will be relying on J.P. Losman as a starting option at some point during the 2008 season.  With that

New stadium highlight of Sunday Night Bills/Colts tilt
    2008-08-23 09:27:32
Edwards to miss all-important third pre-season game (Photo Source) The NFL must be thrilled with this decision. On Sunday night, the Indianapolis Colts will unveil its brand new Lucas Oil Stadium - fondly referred to as "The Lube" by Colts fans - in a pre-season contest against our very own Buffalo Bills.  And that, folks, is about all there is to be interested in - unless, of course, you're a die-hard, as I'm sure the vast majority of folks reading this are. Seriously - take this from an outsider's perspective.  Indy's brand new stadium will be christened with an old-fashioned gunslinger battle royale between the Colts' Jim Sorgi and Buffalo's J.P. Losman.  The NFL must be quivering with delight at the ratings that the matchup will bring in on their hard-to-find NFL Network. Peyton Manning headlines a large list of injured and inactive Colts, and Buffalo's starting quarterback, Trent Edwards, will also miss this game with a thigh contusion.  Half of Indy's defense

Bills' O remains a question mark despite strides
    2008-08-22 12:41:35
After a strong performance in a pre-season win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Buffalo Bills' offense appears to be in the midst of a stunted growth spurt thanks to some unfortunate circumstances.  With several key players missing for the team's third pre-season game - a Sunday night affair in Indianapolis - Buffalo's offense may be about to take a step backwards after a strong step forward in the win over Pittsburgh.  Three areas specifically are worrisome: Edwards. Starting quarterback Trent Edwards did not practice today and hasn't since his injury.  The Bills declared him OUT for the Colts game earlier today.  Of course, this would have been a great opportunity for him and the offense to take another step forward.  Jauron has said the starters may play into the second half, which would have been great for Edwards.  Now, he may take a step back from last week's performance, which worries me.  Who knows how much the starters will play against the

Bills holdout Peters making all the wrong moves - CBSSports.com CBSSports.com's Clark Judge lays it all on the line about Jason Peters' holdout. I couldn't find a single opinion of Judge's to contradict. An extraordinary read - one I've attempted to duplicate for a month. Alas, Judge is induplicable. Bills sign rookie OL Dickinson; release WR Jones - Albany Times Union Could this transaction be tied to Jason Peters? The Bills have boosted their depth at OT, adding a fifth in Dustin Dickinson. He'll likely be a warm body the team uses in the final two pre-season games. Perhaps the Bills know something (negative) about Peters that we don't?

Bills Training Camp ends without Peters, Edwards
    2008-08-20 15:29:07
Peters misses all 26 days of Bills camp (Photo Source) 2008 Buffalo Bills Training Camp at St. John Fisher College came to a close today, and the Bills were without perhaps their two most valuable offensive players.  Jason Peters failed to report for the final day of camp - it's still unclear if (not when) Peters plans to report at all - and quarterback Trent Edwards, nursing a deep thigh bruise, sat out Wednesday's morning practice finale. Peters missed all 26 days of Bills camp - accumulating nearly $400,000 in fines in the process - and all indications are that his holdout will continue as the Bills return to their headquarters in Orchard Park tomorrow.  The Bills still have, and are expected to exercise, their right to fine Peters up to $15,000 per day during his unexcused absence.  While some Bills players, including OG Derrick Dockery, are hopeful that Peters will report soon, it's pretty safe to say that the fan base is not. Evans extension could be completed soon (Photo Source) After over three weeks of training camp practices, the Buffalo Bills are just two sessions shy of wrapping up 2008 Bills Training Camp at St. John Fisher College.  Unbelievable, right?  With camp closing after Wednesday's practice concludes, several story lines are becoming prevalent again; and, of course, the Bills continue to make stories on the practice field as well.  Here's what we should be talking about as training camp comes to a close... Peters Watch: Decision Time?In case you took a holiday to Mars in March and are only just now returning to this glorious planet, Bills LT Jason Peters hasn't reported to Buffalo since taking a physical in early January.  Holding out for more money, the break of training camp seems a logical place to get a further reading on Peters' intentions for the 2008 season.  Will he report with camp over, or will he continue his holdout?  If he continues to stay away, i

    Bills/Steelers: First Half Film Session

Evans (83), wideouts impressive in victory (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills are back on the practice field and in the film room, and just like the Bills, we'll be breaking down a little film today.  I found some time this weekend to re-watch the first half of Buffalo's pre-season win over Pittsburgh, and trust me - it was as enjoyable to watch them "on film" as it was to watch the game live Thursday night. Here are some general observations that I made - and hope you find useful - from Thursday's win: Quarterbacks: What else can you say about Trent Edwards' performance (9/11, 104 yards, 2 TD)?  Unlike in Washington, where I saw Edwards make a few bad reads, I didn't see a single poor decision from Edwards Thursday night.  What made him click was the rhythm to the offense - Trent is at his absolute best when he's in sync with his receivers (which goes for any NFL quarterback), and his rhythm was perfect Thursday night.  Edwards may not have the strongest arm in the

McKelvin creating great problem for Bills' April
    2008-08-16 10:42:59
McKelvin making impact on special teams (Photo Source) Entering his fifth year as the special teams coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, Bobby April has earned a reputation as one of - if not the - best in the business at his craft.  In his four years on the job, April's special teams units have consistently ranked near the top of the NFL in overall ranking, and the Bills have garnered the reputation as the most consistently excellent special teams units in the NFL. Is it fair, then, that the Bills have gotten even more explosive with the addition of CB Leodis McKelvin? Through two pre-season games, Buffalo's rookie cornerback and return specialist has been impressive, averaging 28.3 yards per return each time he's touched the ball, whether on kick or punt returns.  McKelvin picked up 105 return yards on just three returns in the Bills' loss to the Washington Redskins, and his 95-yard touchdown jaunt in the Steelers game sealed the Bills' first pre-season win. McKelvin hasn't b

Bills' Run D proving stout in exhibition season
    2008-08-15 12:36:21
Stroud helping to shore up run D early (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills spent the early portion of their 2008 off-season attempting to remedy a porous run defense.  After finishing 25th in the league in that category in 2007 - surrendering 124.6 yards per game on the ground - the Bills tried to fix the problem by signing beefy linebacker Kawika Mitchell and trading for beefier defensive tackle Marcus Stroud. So far, the remedy is working wonders. Though the first-unit defense has only seen a few series' worth of action through two pre-season games, Buffalo's revamped rushing defense has done a great job thwarting two solid rushing attacks in Washington and Pittsburgh.  In their pre-season opening loss to the Redskins, Clinton Portis was held to just 18 yards on 7 rushes (though he did score a touchdown against Buffalo's second unit defense).  Likewise, the Bills held the duo of Willie Parker and rookie Rashard Mendenhall to 44 yards on 16 carries - though, again, the se

Bills hang on, beat Steelers in Toronto Debut
    2008-08-14 21:54:09
Royal (84), offense excel in Toronto (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills' offense entered their second pre-season game with a chip on their collective shoulder.  Less than a week after an inauspicious start in Washington, Buffalo's offense did a complete 180 in a 24-21 pre-season victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Toronto. NFL.com video highlights Trent Edwards - last week just 1 of 5 passing - was two for two this week.  Two for two on scoring drives, that is; Buffalo's starting offense was on the field for two possessions, and ended both with Robert Royal touchdown receptions.  Edwards finished the evening 9 of 11 passing for 104 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.  He even had a 22-yard scramble for a first down on third and 12 on the team's second possession. Wide receiver Lee Evans got into the act as well; after getting blanked in Washington, Evans caught three passes for 55 yards on two possessions this week.  Royal - heavily involved offensivel

If the Bills' Season Started Tomorrow, V2.0
    2008-08-13 10:18:48
With more than two weeks of training camp in the books and a pre-season opener under their belts, the Buffalo Bills inch ever closer to the day that they will cut down their roster from where it stands currently (81 players) to where it needs to be for the regular season (53).  This is the second installment in a series of posts we'll be using for roster cutdown discussions, called "If the Bills' Season Started Tomorrow". Nearly two weeks ago, the first installment of the series was my first attempt at predicting the final roster, based on what we knew at the time.  It's fascinating, therefore, to see exactly how much has changed after just one pre-season game and a few practices. So, with the Bills set to play their second pre-season game tomorrow, now is as good a time as any for the second installment of this series.  Just like last time, I'll leave you my Final 53 here, and you can poke holes in my logic, leave your own predictions, and discuss the generalities of th

2008 Bills Training Camp: Day Eighteen Breakdown
    2008-08-12 20:23:17
Whitner returns to practice, may play Thursday (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills held their final public practice prior to Thursday's pre-season matchup with Pittsburgh this afternoon, and the big news of the day was the fact that right guard Brad Butler was getting reps at right tackle.  This is not a permanent move; it is merely a precaution, as the Bills will very likely face Pittsburgh with three healthy tackles on the roster.  Butler practiced with the third team on the right side, and if things go well Thursday, he likely won't see much - if any - time at right tackle. Strong safety Donte Whitner returned to practice today; his ankle is healthy and he participated in all individual and team activities.  It's still unclear as to whether he'll play Thursday night, but it looks promising that he'll at least suit up.  CB Terrence McGee also returned to practice Thursday. Neither of Buffalo's two injured offensive tackles - Patrick Estes and Matt Murphy - are expec

The Buffalo Bills returned to the practice field Monday night following their pre-season opening 17-14 loss in Washington, and before the night was out had been dealt a crippling blow to their depth at offensive tackle.  With Jason Peters still MIA amidst a contract holdout, two more tackles - Matt Murphy and Patrick Estes - suffered injuries and left practice early.  The Bills finished practice with just three healthy tackles: Langston Walker, Kirk Chambers and rookie Demetrius Bell.  The seriousness of the two injuries are not yet known, but neither is likely to play in Thursday's pre-season matchup with the Steelers in Toronto. The loss of Murphy - who performed admirably Saturday night - is especially conc

Bills struggle defensively in pre-season opener

WR Hardy catches first NFL TD pass (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills opened up their 2008 pre-season schedule Saturday night in Washington, where the team dropped a 17-14 decision in an up-and-down performance. Buffalo's offense struggled for consistency and the defense had some issues preventing Washington from picking up chunks of yardage, but as it was the first pre-season game of the season, the Bills looked like most fans expected them to: promising, but maddeningly inconsistent. Many thanks to the eight Rumblers who joined me this evening in the open game thread; it was a bit livelier than I expected for such a bleak affair.  Kudos to Ron from NM, whose 79 comments led the way this evening (closely followed by Kurupt's 75); many thanks to Cinga, SuperFan82, Bluebill, Thronsen, Krenn and billsstein for stopping by as well. Five players, including three prominent veterans, are not expected to dress for the Redskins game.  Chief among them are SS Donte Whitner (ankle), LB Angelo Crowell (knee) and WR Josh Reed (back), none of whom will make the trip to Washington as they'll stay in Rochester to get treatment.  Bryan Scott, Keith Ellison and Roscoe Parrish are expected to start, respectively, in their place. Also not making the trip is backup DE Copeland Bryan, who is also dealing with a hamstring issue.  TE Tim Massaquoi is doubtful with a groin injury. Hogs Haven: SB Nation's Washington Redskins blog With the Buffalo Bills' 2008 pre-season opener less than three days away, today we're honored to be joined by Skin Patrol of Hogs Haven to talk about the upcoming matchup between his Washington Redskins and our Buffalo Bills.  Sure, it's just a pre-season game, but that doesn't stop me from having to pull out the bleep button for a jacked up Skin Patrol. The Bills also know Peters as a person. He’s a polite, soft-spoken, team-first guy who they know won’t go all Terrell Owens on them. The fact that the public hasn’t heard so much as a whisper of complaint out of Peters isn’t surprising to those who know him best. In fact, there’s a line of thinking from sources close to the team that Peters never wanted to hold out in the first place, and that everything’s being orchestrated by his agent, Eugene Parker. It only stands to reason that eventually, Peters is bound to override his overzealous agent’s advice, and report. The Bills show resolve by not caving in to meet Peters' demands - PFW

    NFL Network Bills' Preseason Schedule
    2008-08-05 10:37:04
For those of us who don't live in the Buffalo area our only hope of catching the preseason action is NFL Network. (Happily, the NFL Sunday Ticket allows non-Western NY Bills fans to see all of the games in real time.) I think the schedule of games is a bit quirky. The Bills play on the 9th, 14th, 24th and 28th. I don't think I like the 5 and 4 day gaps between the first two and last two games... NFL Network schedule (all games MST, because that's where I live) 9th Skins game 5 pm MST 14th Steelers game 10 pm 24th Colts game 6 pm 29th Lions game 3 pm (game played on the 28th but broadcast on 29th) Editor's Note, by Brian Galliford: Thanks, Ron, for the useful information (even though I'm in WNY).  Just a general pre-season FYI for folks, as well - we'll have open game threads for each pre-season game in which you can blog live while the action is going on.  I also have access to DVR this season, so I'll be watching live (like the rest of you) AND doing some film sess

2008 Bills Training Camp: Day Eleven Breakdown
    2008-08-05 07:13:32
LB Crowell returns to practice (Photo Source) After nine days of practices, the Buffalo Bills had Sunday off and returned to the practice field yesterday afternoon for their eleventh day of training camp.  While OT Jason Peters continued his holdout, the Bills did get some good news in the form of veteran LB Angelo Crowell returning to the field of play.  Crowell missed the majority of last week's practices with a left knee injury. Joining Crowell on the field were newly signed LB Donnie Spragan as well as UDFA rookie WR C.J. Hawthorne, a Hawaii product that the Bills added yesterday.  Hawthorne takes the roster spot of one Jason Peters, and was signed to reduce the number of reps that Buffalo's depleted receiving corps was taking. Strong safety Donte Whitner missed practice with an ankle injury that required an MRI, but the injury is not considered serious.  WR Josh Reed was also held out of practice Monday as the team looked to reduce his work load and rest his s

Jauron gives his players Sunday off (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills held a morning practice on Saturday, and the big news of the day was that the team agreed to a deal with veteran LB Donnie Spragan.  A player that the team worked out this past May, Spragan is a 32-year old veteran that has been a steady performer for the Broncos and Dolphins.  His signing came in the wake of rookie Alvin Bowen's season-ending knee injury.  Spragan is expected to compete for a reserve role at weak side linebacker and on special teams. Missing Saturday's workout were QB J.P. Losman (re-aggravated thumb), WR James Hardy (hamstring), and CB Will James (groin).  DE Copeland Bryan left practice early with an apparent hamstring injury. Practice Getting BoringMuch of the fanfare and interest that surrounded the first week's practice sessions seems to have died down a bit.  With the first pre-season game of the season coming up this coming Saturday at Washington, fans seem more anxio

2008 Bills Training Camp: Day Eight Breakdown
    2008-08-02 09:51:26
DiGiorgio getting looks at WLB (Photo Source) Day eight of 2008 Buffalo Bills training camp is in the books, and with it came the team's first major injury of the season.  Rookie linebacker Alvin Bowen, a fifth-round pick out of Iowa State this past April, suffered a severe knee injury in Friday's practice and is likely lost for the season.  As a result of Bowen's injury, the Bills were forced to sign veteran free agent Donnie Spragan, who is expected to be a reserve outside linebacker and special teams player this season. With Angelo Crowell sitting out of practice and Kawika Mitchell limited as part of a rest regimen for select veterans, backup middle linebacker John DiGiorgio worked with the first team at Mitchell's weak side spot.  Keith Ellison continued to take first team reps at Crowell's strong side spot. DiGiorgio's case is interesting.  He played weak side in one game last season - a 26-3 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 2 - and held his own in an underrated ef

If the Bills' Season Started Tomorrow...
    2008-08-01 14:24:56
The Buffalo Bills are through their first full week of training camp, so it's time to start another new series here at Buffalo Rumblings.  After each week of training camp, I'll post my projections for the team's 53-man roster based on a combination of what we've seen/heard, certain situations (ahem, Mr. Peters), and anything else applicable.  We'll compare notes each week this series is featured as sort of a stock market for each Bills player as camp progresses. Prior to the third pre-season game - when most, if not all, of the major roster decisions are really made - Kurupt will be breaking down the battles for the final few roster spots between several players at several positions.  Consider this a complement to that future discussion, as well as an add-on to the predictions that sireric made earlier this week. Note: Predictions have been updated in light of LB Alvin Bowen's likely season-ending injury.  Without further ado, here's how I believe the 53-man roster

2008 Bills Training Camp: Day Seven Breakdown

Hardy, others miss practice time (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills completed their first full seven-day week of training camp last night with an evening practice at St. John Fisher College, and Buffalo's injury list continues to lengthen early in camp. The injuries are not yet considered serious, but there are several players missing practice time.  Rookie wide receiver James Hardy, who pulled a hamstring during warm-ups, joined fellow rookie wideout Steve Johnson as sideline spectators.  LB Angelo Crowell missed his third straight night of practice, and S Ko Simpson was absent as well as he had his surgically repaired ankle tested (the MRIs were reportedly negative).  Fellow starting safety Donte Whitner left practice early after getting sick on the field. Despite the injuries (and the continued absence of a certain Pro Bowl left tackle), the Bills' offense put together one of its better practice sessions of camp last night, particularly in the red zone.  Defensive

Bills will lean heavily on Lynch, Jackson in '08

Lynch, Jackson will be used plenty in 2008 (Photo Source) When he was hired as the new offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills this past January, Turk Schonert promised to get Buffalo's two running backs, particularly Marshawn Lynch, more involved in the team's offensive attack. If that turns out to be true, Lynch and his running mate, Fred Jackson, are in for very busy 2008 seasons. Jackson made a name for himself in '07 while filling in for an injured Lynch, who missed three games, and he remained a part of Buffalo's offense even after Lynch returned to the lineup.  During the four-game stretch in which the duo played significant amounts of time together, they were, in a word, invaluable to Buffalo's (mediocre) offensive attack. Take their combined stat lines from those four games, for instance: Lynch, Weeks 14-17: 84 carries, 364 yards, 1 TD; 3 catches, 64 yardsJackson, Weeks 14-17: 33 carries, 184 yards; 10 catches, 66 yards Those numbers weren't accrued against cupcake de

Walker will play LT as long as Peters stays away (Photo Source) A day after the team's first night practice of 2008 training camp, the Buffalo Bills took the field for another padded practice today - and upon doing so, made a very important switch on their offensive line. Langston Walker, entering his second season as a Bill, will make the switch from right to left tackle.  He'll be charged with the duty of protecting Trent Edwards' blind side until the team finds out what is going on with holdout left tackle Jason Peters. This move is not considered permanent at the moment, but is meant to give the club options along the line in case Peters' holdout extends into the regular season.  Currently, Walker is by far the team's best offensive tackle, so putting him at the most important position makes sense.  But he is clearly better suited to playing the right side; depending on what happens with Peters, expect the team to start exploring the market of available tackle optio

    Saving Money on Water Bills
    2008-07-30 11:20:00
Like everyone else these days, I am trying to come up with ways to save a few bucks on my everyday expenses. In my case this doesn’t save me so much money as it does aggravation. I have excessively hard water with lots of iron and impurities. I have a water softener and a neutralizer. Since I am a rural kind of guy, I have a well and septic system. In order not to overload the septic system I discharge my water treatment water on my side lawn. This leads to some really thick grass in some areas and in the low spots some mud. To me this was the aggravating factor but for you this may be the money saving incentive. If you have public water and sewer you may be able to save a few bucks by changing the cycle of your water treatment equipment. My water guy found that my neutralizer was backwashing 4 times a week at 80 gallons per backwash. It was not set to do this but over time the pins(whatever the heck that means) had moved and changed the cycle. He changed it to 2 times per week and no

QB Trent Edwards, DE Chris Kelsay at Bills camp (Courtesy twoeightnine) The Buffalo Bills held their first night practice of 2008 training camp last night at St. John Fisher College, and I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend the festivities.  With pen and pad in hand, I spent the majority of my night frantically taking as many notes as possible.  It was a beautiful night, but unfortunately, I was not overly impressed by what I saw from our team.  Here are some observations, from units to players to coaches, that I hope you'll find useful (this could get long): Edwards StrugglesFor all the good that we've heard from Trent Edwards this early in camp, I saw a guy who struggled a lot last night.  He did mention post-practice that what the team was running last night was a whole bunch of new plays, which may have been the reason he looked so poor.  But he was missing receivers high, he was bouncing throws off the turf, and he was very obviously d

Bills LB Kawika Mitchell (Photo Source) The Buffalo Bills will hold their first night practice of 2008 training camp tonight at 7PM Eastern at St. John Fisher College.  Buffalo Rumblings will be represented by yours truly at the festivities; we're already scheduled to meet up with killascript and the Dukes of Awesome, and if anyone else wants to meet up to chat for a few minutes, I'm game.  Look for the lame-o wearing the Posluszny jersey, holding a digital camera and obsessively writing notes.  Hope to see some of you out there! Here's what's been making headlines recently in Bills country... Bills' Defensive TweaksWhy are the Bills tweaking their defensive system, abandoning specific defensive line techniques and focusing on becoming more physical?  Not just because it makes sense.  They're doing it to take full advantage of the talents of DT Marcus Stroud. The Bills will be milking this guy's talent for all its worth.  They'll be using the alignments t

Jackson, backs making plays as receivers (Photo Source) Day three of 2008 Buffalo Bills Training Camp was a walk-through session; the team made up for the early walk-through today with the first pads practice of camp.  The Bills are completely done with two-a-days for the duration of camp, which may not be a bad thing, considering the way the team was hitting today. Here's what occurred of note during today's practice, with, as usual, the bulk of the discussion topics lifted from the official site's excellent coverage... This. Is. Bills RB Lynch Avoids League Punishment

Lynch could still be forced to deal with a civil suit (Photo Source) Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, who in late June accepted a plea deal and paid a $100 fine for a late May hit and run incident, will not be punished by the NFL. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who is visiting Bills training camp in Pittsford today, confirmed to the media that Lynch has not violated the NFL's personal conduct policy.  The Commissioner did, however, visit shortly with Lynch to discuss the running back's responsibilities as an NFL player. Lynch in June pleaded guilty to a traffic violation after a late May incident in which his Porsche SUV struck and injured Toronto native Kimberly Shpeley.  After weeks of speculation about his punishment - not to mention Lynch's lawyer-ordered refusal to speak to anyone about the situation - Lynch paid his modest fine and has had his driver's license revoked. The fact that Lynch avoided league suspension is the latest in a line of good news for the

McKelvin signs, will practice in pads Monday (Photo Source) After their opening day of practices in which the offense shined and several players were signed, the Buffalo Bills received more good news on Saturday.  Left tackle Jason Peters, who continued his holdout on Saturday, remains the lone off-field distraction for the Bills. Rookie cornerback Leodis McKelvin won't be missing any more practice time, as the first-round pick inked a 5-year, $19.4 million deal with $12.6 million guaranteed to officially end his short holdout yesterday.  As the Bills have a closed practice session today, the first time Bills fans will get to glimpse McKelvin will be during Monday's practice in pads. Day one of 2008 Buffalo Bills training camp is in the books, and the Bills hit the practice field once again at St. John Fisher College about a half-hour ago.  To this point, a few things remain clear this morning: Jason Peters and Leodis McKelvin are still not present for today's two practices; DT Kyle Williams, meanwhile, has returned to the practice field after missing yesterday's session due to the birth of his second child. Please use this as an open thread for any rumors/updates you hear throughout the second day of Bills training camp.  We'll provide a summary of the day's action later on this afternoon.  Go Bills!

Bills' Evans, Peters a Contradiction in Professionalism
    2008-07-26 07:56:08
Evans doing what Peters won't - working (Photo Source) Buffalo Bills wide receiver Lee Evans wants a new contract; he's wanted it for two years now.  His teammate, left tackle Jason Peters, also wants a new contract.  (Y'all may have heard that rumor.)  He's wanted a new deal, at least publicly, since the 2007 season ended. If actions speak louder than words, the Bills are currently attempting to re-sign the right guy. Ever since putting together a 2006 season in which he caught 82 passes, scored 8 touchdowns and was mentioned as a possible Pro Bowl receiver (he did not make the team), talks about Evans' contract status have dominated headlines surrounding the player.  Currently working on his rookie contract, Evans has every right to covet a new contract - he's probably not worth "elite receiver" money, but his current deal underpays him. Peters, meanwhile, isn't working under his rookie contract.  A budding talent at right tackle in the summer prior to the 2

Bills Training Camp, Day One: Open Thread

The Buffalo Bills are set to kick off their first practice of 2008 Training Camp in just a few moments, sans OT Jason Peters and top draft pick CB Leodis McKelvin.  McKelvin is expected to be signed relatively soon - perhaps even soon enough to get him onto the field for this afternoon's practice, which starts at 2:15 PM - but there will be no such luck for Peters. If you're headed to training camp today, we'd love to hear from you later on this afternoon if you feel up to it.  Be sure to check out the official site's coverage, and if you're traveling today, WGR 550 should have top-notch coverage as well.  Use this open thread to report any developments or discuss what you see/hear on the field as the Bills strap on the pads for the first time. Bills OT Peters Stays Away From Training Camp
    2008-07-25 07:11:13
With Peters holding out, pressure squarely on Bills (Photo Source) It's Friday morning.  The Buffalo Bills are set to hold their first training camp practice of the 2008 season in about a half hour.  They'll be hitting the practice field without their best offensive player, as offensive tackle Jason Peters has continued his holdout and has not reported to camp at St. John Fisher College.  NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that Peters is contemplating a season-long holdout should he not get a new deal - and, unlike Chicago's Devin Hester, he can probably afford it. We're all well aware of the situation.  What becomes important to discuss at this point is the two sides to the story from Buffalo's perspective (because, let's face it, the ball is now in their court - Peters has made his move).  The Bills, at this point, can either continue to play hardball, or they can just pay the man.  Let's dive in: Reasons to Play Hardball with PetersBelow are the

Will Peters turn up in Pittsford for Bills camp? (Photo Source) Twist this potential fact around in the old caboose for a moment: when the Buffalo Bills report to St. John Fisher College for 2008 training camp tomorrow, the team could be dealing with the absences of six holdouts.  Repeat if necessary, but there should be impact the first time you read it. If the Bills' lack of (public) movement on the signing front remains par for the course, Buffalo will likely be without star left tackle Jason Peters and five rookies for the start of summer practices. Peters' situation has been well-documented - after skipping both voluntary and mandatory spring practices in a clear contract dispute, Peters was fined, but there has been no word on movement around a new deal.  In fact, we've heard rumblings - and we freely admit that they're to be filed under the "rumor" category at this point - that the Bills are willing to play hard ball with Peters, who signed a five-year extension (wort

He still lives in Chicago in an apartment full of hardwood floors and taxidermy, with an unapologetically vocal cat and a dog that is skinnier than the grain. Evans, Peters unlikely to be signed before Bills Camp
    2008-07-18 11:06:21
Per Chris Brown.  This is somewhat obvious considering camp begins next week.  I think Lee Evans has a chance to sign before the season starts, and Jason Peters won't be getting a new deal until next year.  We shall see, though it looks like Buffalo's front office will be letting these contract situations play out even further. CB: I do not believe either of the two veterans will sign extensions before camp. Buffalo's front office is zeroed in on getting their draft picks under contract before training camp opens next week. That's the main area of focus right now. Both Evans and Peters are under contract already so they don't have to sign anything new.

He will take a lot of pressure off DT Kyle Williams, who is a short, powerful player who shows intensity and solid technique. ESPN - Bills' D-Line Ranks #22 in NFL (Insider needed)

Bills Training Camp Battles: Backup TE
    2008-07-14 06:00:07
Schouman making off-season waves (Photo Source) Note: As Buffalo Rumblings counts down the days until the start of the Buffalo Bills' 2008 training camp (current count: 10), we'll be breaking down some of the bigger battles we're sure to witness during summer practices as part of a comprehensive package of pre-camp topics we'll explain in more depth in the near future.  For now, let's get our Training Camp Battles series under way with a discussion of the team's tight ends. With a second-year quarterback in Trent Edwards working to establish rapport with nearly every offensive weapon in his arsenal, Buffalo's competition to find a "receiving tight end" to be Edwards' safety valve is, quite literally, wide open.  While the names here don't elicit excitement in what should be a boring offensive philosophy (at least when it comes to the tight ends), the winner of this competition will nonetheless have an impact on how Buffalo's offense operates.  Meet those about to go to

If You Ran the Buffalo Bills' Front Office...
    2008-07-09 19:09:31
Evans headlines list of unsigned impact Bills (Photo Source) It's something that nearly every Buffalo Bills fan out there has fantasized about at least once (or, as in my case, multiple times daily): having a say in personnel decisions for our favorite team.  I can't begin to list here every little thing I'd have done differently than Buffalo's various front office personnel over the years; it'd take months to get everything out on that front. This evening (and we'll discuss it through lunch-ish tomorrow), however, our greatest dreams are being realized - in some twisted, hardly-based-in-reality way.  Our task as Buffalo's fantasy front office is simple: prioritize the five big-name players seeking new (or inaugural) deals from the team. Sure, it's all good that the team has signed half of its ten draft picks (CB Reggie Corner, TE Derek Fine, OT Demetrius Bell, WR Steve Johnson, CB Kennard Cox); it's also great that the team has taken measures to lock up young talent such as

Pressure On Jauron For Bills 2008 Season
    2008-07-06 16:15:29
As the Bills enter the 2008 season expectations are higher than they have been in quite some time. With an improved defense, always solid special teams, and an offense that should improve the playoffs are seen as a very distinct possibility. To stoke the flames of optimism even further Bills fans see a [...]

Bills' Secret Offensive Weapon? Yep, Still Parrish
    2008-07-02 06:00:02
Can the Bills finally maximize Parrish's potential? (Photo Source) He was the team's top draft pick in 2005, heralded as a unique athletic talent that would add electricity and explosiveness to Buffalo's offense. Entering his fourth season in the league, however, Buffalo Bills wide receiver has yet to completely deliver on his potential as an electrifying slot receiver.  Sure, he's established himself as one of the game's most dominant punt returners, and he's still good for some big plays here and there on offense (see - touchdowns against Jacksonville and New England; diving reception against the Giants), but his impact on Buffalo's offense has been minimal in his three seasons as a Bill. Might that change in 2008?  Clearly, Parrish is still the most dangerous player on Buffalo's roster when the ball is in his hands - and with a better supporting cast at wide receiver and (keep the fingers crossed) some stability at quarterback, Parrish could be the one Bills offensive pla

    Paying bills for a living….
    2008-06-28 06:06:00
When IIPM comes to education, never compromiseExplains Rahul, “Every big group expands as the economy demands. We wanted a strong footing in the service industry. I personally, always wanted to start something service based. And having studied abroad, I had a fairly good idea about the service industry outside.” So he took up the task to replicate the global concept of convenient payment of bills for the India’s a billion plus. He blended a vast and efficient retail network with state-ofthe- art technology and created Easy Bill in 2003. “With the economy booming, it was the best time to get into this service industry. When we launched Easy Bill, we required a huge network of dealers & retailers. The requisite skill sets were very similar to what Hero Group was already into–low value cash movement,” reminisces Rahul. To make the consumer better understand his offerings, Rahul avoided marketing jargons in the nomenclature of his new venture and christened it Easy Bill. Fr

Buffalo Rumblings' Best of the Bills Team: C
    2008-06-25 07:02:51
Former Bills C Kent Hull (Photo Source) Over the past few weeks, readers of Buffalo Rumblings have been diving into their collective histories as Buffalo Bills fans, recalling memories, waxing nostalgic, and putting together a roster of players we're calling Buffalo Rumblings' Best of the Bills Team. All of the starters are in for this team's offensive unit save one very underrated position: center.  (Just ask Ron from NM and his padawans about the importance of a good center.)  Who will man the pivot on our team of all-time greats?  We've got three candidates for you to vote on, as usual, but entrance polls are indicating that this vote may be a runaway... Al Bemiller ('61-'69): One of the better lineman of the earliest Bills teams, Bemiller manned the pivot of the line that paved the way to two AFL championships.  Bemiller was also a highly versatile player, starting games at left tackle and right guard during his nine-year stint as a member of the team.

Buffalo Rumblings' Best of the Bills Team: OG
    2008-06-23 06:00:58
Hall of Fame OG Joe DeLamielleure (Photo Source) Throughout the storied history of the franchise, the Buffalo Bills have had many excellent players pass through the doors of the team's facilities.  We've discussed a lot of them recently, including Hall of Fame (and potential Hall of Fame) talents like Jim Kelly, O.J. Simpson, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed. Who knew, however, that Buffalo's deepest position of all-time - at least offensively - may be offensive guard? Today, when voting for our two starting guards on our Buffalo Rumblings Best of the Bills Team, we have four candidates to choose from.  Two are Hall of Fame players, one went to four Super Bowls, and a third is currently finishing out his active career and could very well end up in the Hall of Fame himself.  There's plenty of talent to choose from here, to be sure; here are your four candidates for starting guard on our Best of the Bills Team: Billy Shaw ('61-'69): A long-standing member of the Pro Footb

    My Bills are not Canadian
    2008-06-18 10:41:25
Editor's Note: This article, composed by Joe P, was written in response to the article immediately following it, composed by yours truly.  In it, Joe P expresses his opinions on the Buffalo Bills' potential future move to Toronto.  It's worth a read.  Nice job, Joe.  End Note "Greed" and "Invaders" seem like accurate descriptions from the Canadian point of view.  I don’t blame Canadian writers for aggressively trying to defend their league.  In fact, I applaud them. They see the writing on the wall.  Sticking your head in the sand and hoping the NFL doesn’t kill the CFL doesn’t seem like a winning strategy to me.  Appeasement of an aggressive invader has never worked throughout history, just ask the French.  Canadian writers are not suffering from paranoia.  They are trying to save the teams and the CFL that they love.  I can relate. Supporters of this home games in Toronto idea have tried very hard to make us

"Bills in Toronto Series" stealing CFL's thunder?
    2008-06-17 20:16:50
Bills in Toronto series stealing headlines from CFL openers (Photo Source) The start of the 2008 professional football season is nine days away! In Canada, at least. Next Thursday, June 26, marks the first week of regular season action in the Canadian Football League.  In their final pre-season tune-up, our across-the-border neighbors - the Toronto Argonauts - will face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before beginning their regular season on the road in Winnipeg.  Argos fans everywhere are feeling now exactly what we feel in early September - the dawning of a fresh football season. Why, then, can't the writers covering the team write about... well, the team? There's actual news to report in the CFL at this point - such as the Calgary Stampeders' re-signing of former NFL wide receiver Ken-Yon Rambo, or the Montreal Alouettes naming Marcus Brady as their starting (but not exclusive) quarterback.  But for a league that doesn't need those covering it to try to legitimize i

Buffalo Rumblings' Best of the Bills Team: WR Recount
    2008-06-16 06:50:53
Important: Please read voting instructions carefully. Back by popular demand, I thought this morning would be as good a time as any to re-vote on the wide receiver position for our Buffalo Rumblings Best of the Bills Team.  Thus far, QB Jim Kelly, RB Thurman Thomas and TE Pete Metzelaars have been "officially" voted onto the team; wide receivers will officially join them this morning, but only after a re-vote. First thing's first: Bills all-time leading receiver Andre Reed has been declared a "mortal lock" for the team, as he is Buffalo's all-time leading receiver and the one wideout most likely to make the Hall of Fame as a Bill (James Lofton doesn't count). That leaves four candidates for two spots.  Here's where it gets important.  Please vote for one (1) player NOT worthy of making this team.  Just like American Idol (or whatever other input-laden reality show you watch), vote for the player you don't want to see on the team.  It's that simple. So, in ou

Buffalo Rumblings' Best of the Bills Team: RB

Former Bills RB O.J. Simpson (Photo Source) With the rest of the skill positions voted for and cemented (well, maybe not the WR position), it's time to get on with what could shape up to be the most intriguing debate we've had to this point: who makes our Best of the Bills Team as the starting running back? The Bills are a team rich in history, tradition and production at the running back position, and two of the candidates listed below rank amongst the NFL's best all-time rushers.  Here are your candidates; be sure to vote in the poll below: Cookie Gilchrist ('62-'64): He only played in Buffalo for three seasons, but Cookie Gilchrist made them count.  Splitting rushing duties with Wray Carlton, Gilchrist amassed 3,056 yards and scored 31 rushing touchdowns in his three seasons as a Bill.  He also added 78 receptions for 875 yards and four more scores during that time period.  In those three Bills seasons (he'd spend two more as a Bronco and another as a Dolphin
