Algae As Biofuel; Top 3 Reasons Why!
    2008-08-17 18:12:00
Top 3 Reasons Why Algae is the New Biofuel!By Victor GarlingtonHave you ever gone fishing only to discover that your favorite fishing hole was over grown with algae? Well now they are using that same green algae to power your diesel engine truck. That's right the algae grown in ponds can be converted to oil and the oil refined into Biodiesel. Algae have the potential to evolve into a mainstream fuel feedstock. Algae are not a food crops, they grow fast and algae remove massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the air.1. Algae are not food cropsAlgae are not food crops and there has been a huge debate and more focus on the food vs. fuel question. Some critics say agricultural based crops are not sustainable as a fuel source. Corn and Soybeans are being used currently as Biofuel which some say are the blame for higher food prices. For example; some waste collections companies have seen the cost of WVO (Waste vegetable oil) or yellow grease increase to an all time high worth as much as $3.5...

    What is Biofuel?
    2008-07-15 23:25:48
Biofuel isn’t one of the well known types of renewable energy but an important one to understand. The process begins when plants to through photosynthesis. There is chemical energy stored inside of it that can be released. What they create is a type of biomass and that can be turned into fuel. It can then [...]...

There’s More to Bio than Biofuel - A point of view!
    2008-05-03 19:25:58
“When it comes to sugarcane, the future often envisioned is of sugar as a byproduct of ethanol production — and with new technology, perhaps even of biodiesel. Yet technology isn’t stopping at fuel, but is swiftly moving towards bioplastics on a commercial scale. The idea of bioplastics isn’t entirely new, with work on the concept beginning [...]...

Biofuel: filling your tank with hunger
    2008-04-23 17:06:44
The UN is calling for action to avoid the "silent tsunami of rising food prices which threatens to push more than 100 million people worldwide into hunger" (http://www.un.org/). Protests against rising costs of basic foods already started in Haiti, Mexico, the Philippines, Bangladesh, South Africa.... Sub-Saharan Africans continue their decades-old silent protest, dying slowly, quietly, dryly.I recall now the bad feeling I had last year when I read about Bush's visit to ethanol-driven Brazil. Biofuel production is said to be responsible for at least one third of the recent increase in food prices. It was already being called “deforestation fuel”. Now it’s also “hunger fuel”.But it’s bio. «Quand je dors chez mon copain, on mange tout le temps bio» (Sanseverino, «Cette conne m'ennuie»). Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish....

The EU is going to rethink its biofuel policy
    2008-01-15 19:48:12
After admitting that no one thought about the environmental or the economic implications of turning specific cropsinto biofuels, the EU has decided to think again about the use of those fuels. The EU's target for biofuels was 10 percent by 2010 but this target is now going to be reviewed. Stavros Dimas (pictured on the right), the EU's Commissioner for Environmental affairs said that the EU didn't forecast the actual implications that this 10 percent goal could have on the environment. Some recent studies show that intensive production of some biofuel sources, such as cereals, actually increases food prices and forest surface destruction, a surface which is then intended for agriculture. Dimas said that the EU will review this percentage until everybody is sure than the remedy is not worse than the problem. When the EU announced the 10 percent goal, biofuels were thought to be one of the best solutions: no special new technology had to be created and the plants had captured previously the CO2 that was released after combustion. Dimas was remarkably hard against palm oil for biodiesel and has asked for drastic measures against importing it into the EU. Ferrari F430 Spider BioFuel, Detroit 2008
    2008-01-15 10:10:00
Ferrari goes green with its debut of the super F430 Spider Biofuel at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The Ferrari F430 Spider runs on E85 fuel, made from 85% bio-renewable ethanol, which cuts CO2 emissions and boosts power and troque.Ferrari said it took the wraps off its green prototype "in recognition of growing interest in North America in alternative sources of energy."It said the "ultimate aim" is to cut fuel consumption and emissions on the car by 40 percent by 2012.Now, it has already led to improvements in aerodynamics and weight savings. The Ferrari F430 Spider Biofuel is a result of technology developed to meet new regulations in Formula One that call for the use of biofuels. In Formula One the level is 5.75%, while the FIA GT and American Le Mans series (ALMS) targets a 10% ethanol blend. The A1 GP championship, which uses Ferrari engines from this season, also requires a 10% blend. All Ferrari cars can already use up to 10% ethanol (E10) without modification. For the F430 Spider Biofuel, modifications were made to the fuel feed system and engine CPU to enable the car to run on anything between pure petrol to an 85% blend with ethanol without changing the compression ratio, making it a true flexfuel vehicle. The use of this type of biofuel and the modifications made have boosted power by 10bhp along with a 4% increase in torque yet overall weight is unchanged. CO2 emissions drop 5%.NAIAS 2008: 2009 Toyota Venza CrossoverNAIAS 2008: Chrysler Russia Plant PlanningMazda Furai Video of 2008 NAIAS2008 Detroit Auto Show: Lexus LF-A Roadster, Sexy!!!http://del.icio.us/rss/horisly...

House Energy Bill Not Worth a Bucket of Biofuel
    2007-08-03 20:14:33
The US House of Representatives must have missed An Inconvenient Truth. Otherwise, they wouldn't be debating an absolutely worthless energy bill. The only way this thing will save energy is if they post it on the net instead of printing paper copies. Democratic leaders in the House declined to include meaningful increases in fuel efficiency standards in the bill, and an important and imminently...

UNITED KINGDOM: Oil will grow on trees in BPs latest biofuel joint venture
    2007-07-03 04:38:00
BP has set up a venture with biodiesel firm D1 Oils to increase planting of jatropha, an oilseed tree that produces an inedible vegetable oil used to make biofuel. This is the second such deal that BP has signed within days. On Tuesday, it joined forces with Associated British Foods to build a £200m biofuels plant in Hull.BP will put in an initial £31.75m, while D1 will incorporate its planting business and the trees it has planted to date. The venture requires £80m in funding over five years, and the rest of the money will be put in on a 50-50 basis.News of the link came as Grain, a charity that promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity, warned that the stampede into biofuels was "causing enormous environmental and social damage". Their report said hundreds of thousands of indigenous people and peasant communities in developing countries were being thrown off their land as biofuel firms needed more and more space for their crops.Elliott Mannis, chief e...

F1 could switch to turbo V6 engines running on biofuel
    2007-05-20 01:05:11
Filed under: Motorsports Max Mosely and the FIA are looking at some radically different and more restrictive rules for the future of Formula One racing. For the past couple of years, they’ve talked about trying to make the cars more eco-friendly and relevant to real world cars. The latest proposals are an interesting step in that direction. For 2011 and beyond, Mosely wants the cars powered by turbocharged 2.2L V-6 engines running on biofuel. When F1 cars first ran turbos in the 1980s, there was initially a period where they ran unlimited boost and rpm and teams were building special qualifying engines that put out over 1,000hp from 1.5L! This time, it’s likely to be a little different, with a 10,000 rpm rev limit, a standardized ECU, and stricter restrictions on the fuel content. So far, there’s no indication of what type of biofuel would be used, though given the current success of Audi and Peugeot with their LeMans prototypes, biodiesel seems a likely candidate....
