| | For the Birds | | 2008-06-26 20:07:41 | | Game Seventy-Nine - Cubs 4 Orioles 11
WP - Radhames Liz (2-0) LP - Jason Marquis (6-4) Save - None
Lou Piniella's crew became the last team in the majors to record their 30th loss of the season following just their third series defeat at home of the year. The Orioles became only the second team to walk into Wrigley Field this year and leave after taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs.
After a good month and posting a 4-0 record in 4 starts, Jason Marquis was simply horrible. Marquis did not pitch with the same confidence he had in his previous outings and he left after allowing 7 runs, all earned, on 7 hits in 4 innings. The Orioles put the game out of reach in the 3rd inning when they scored 5 times, all with 2 outs. Marquis walked 3, one intentional, and the Orioles managed only 3 hits, but all 3 of the free passes scored.
The Orioles plated 2 more in the 4th and kept tacking on until they built an 11-0 lead in the 6th inning. Aubrey Huff hit 3 doubles, went 4-for-5 with 3 run | | By: Chicago Cubs Online

| | Look at the birds | | 2008-06-15 10:30:00 | | W hen you shift your mind into neutral and just let it idle, where do your thoughts go'? Do you worry about money'? We are to be careful with money, but Jesus taught that we are not to be full of care about it. If you have given yourself to God, you don't have to worry about life's necessities. God Himself has assumed responsibility for your food and clothing.Speaking of our need for food, Jesus pointed to the birds. He said, "They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" That doesn't mean we get what we need by doing nothing. Birds must scratch andsearch for food. The point is, they don't worry about it.Jesus instructed us to center our lives on God's kingdom. Then clothing, food, and drink will be ours as well. Look at it this way: If you center your life on money, you'll ultimately leave it or it will leave you, and you'll also lose out on God. But if you center your life on God and doing His will, all the | | By: Nice Reading | | |
| | The Birds Fly Into Boston...Bye Bye Birdies...BEAT LA! | | 2008-06-10 04:48:00 | | Those Orioles from Baltimore are in Boston to play a three game set starting tonight (Tuesday). And yes, it will be muggy, hot and humid, at least for game one. Some relief is in sight for the Wednesday and Thursday evening contests, relief in the form of a cool front which will march through the northeastern states sometime Wednesday afternoon. The humidity will go down to tolerable levels and the temperatures will back off by 15 degrees or so. Yesterday here in Connecticut, those temperatures topped out at about 97 degees F. That's too warm for this time of year. And on that sizzling note, here are the pitching matchups for the first place Boston Red Sox (40-26) and the last place Baltimore Orioles (31-31)... Daniel Cabrera (5-2, 3.98 ERA) vs. Josh Beckett (6-4, 4.07) tonight Garrett Olson (5-1, 3.86) vs. Bartolo Colon (3-1, 3.91) Wednesday Jeremy Guthrie (3-6, 3.40) vs. Jon Lester (4-3, 3.50) Thursday.Notice that 5 of the 6 scheduled starters have ERAs in the threes. | | Boston Bops Birds - Colon Sharp Enough...Red Sox 9 Orioles 4 | | 2008-06-02 04:31:00 | | Bartolo Colon won his third straight decision while wearing a Boston uniform and the Red Sox went on a hitting tear, several of them, in fact, and defeated Baltimore 9-4. Another highlight was home run #501 from Manny Ramirez. But Bartolo Colon, who struggled a little bit more than in his first two starts but is clearly what this team needed after Matsuzaka went down, pitched into the 7th inning, giving up 4 earned runs (the last one came in courtesy of Javy Lopez), on 7 hits. He struck out 5 and threw a total of 102 pitches. If he keeps going like this, and he thinks his velocity has not fully returned yet, he will help his club immensely. The O's third base coach, Juan Samuels, said this to Colon as he passed by him yesterday...“I told him, ‘You’ve got your sh*t back,’ Samuel said."Peter here...well said, Juan. | | Birds in the picture | | 2008-05-10 01:31:22 | | Fort Collins - A tourist-filled raft slammed into the Class 3 rapid Sarah's Hole on the Cache la Poudre River one morning this week. Some rafters grimaced, others screamed or laughed as they punched through the waves. Their faces were captured by photographer Charlie Malone. When Malone was done shooting, he pulled the memory stick out of his Nikon camera and slipped it into a tiny Lycra backpack worn by a gray pigeon named Lucky.Malone gently released the bird riverside, and Lucky took wing.Malone and the company he works for, Rocky Mountain Adventures, were relying on the uncanny - and scientifically mysterious - ability of homing pigeons to fly for tens and even hundreds of miles and find their way home.No one knows how they do it, said pigeon expert Charles Wolcott, a professor of neurobiology and behavior at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.Wolcott believes pigeons rely on "multiple, redundant systems" to navigate accurately - using vision, smell and even the Earth's magnetic field | | By: Pets Knowledge | | |

She was treated at a local hospital and released, and will be fine. Her name: Alexa Rodriguez. She was part of a group taking the tour of the park when a hawk, who had a nest in an overhang near the press box, spotted them. When the tour got to about 40 feet of the nest, the hawk came at them, and scratched the unfortunate girl on the head. The nest was removed later in the day by state wildlife officials.I can't help but think there's a message in there somewhere for that guy who plays third base for the Yankees. | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine
| | Hope is Birds Singing in the Cold Darkness | | 2008-04-04 06:40:59 | | It's still dark out there and there are still small patches of snow. But the birds are singing I can hear them out there in the cold darkness. They are singing because they know that spring is coming, even though there very little evidence. Their song is a song of hope.At this moment all is OK in my world. I'm not thrilled about three of the four court hearings we have to face in the next few weeks (one of them, April 22nd, we finalize the new boys, so THAT I am looking forward to). But for today, all is well. Today there is not anything too tough on my schedule today (a United Way Presentation in late afternoon is all) and the kids have been very well behaved this week. But there are other days when things don't seem this hopeful. There are days when my world seems cold and dark. And I have to ask myself, "Do I have the strength to sing in those situations?" Often, I probably do have the strength, but I just choose not to. I would rather moan. And the more negative things I | | By: Never a Dull Moment | | |
| | Do Birds Know More About Eating Fruits Than Humans Do? | | 2008-04-02 19:41:00 | | Fruit-eating birds actively select fruit with the highest concentrations of antioxidants – compounds that help them maintain a healthy immune system – ecologists have found. This is the first time that a group of antioxidants known as flavonoids have been found to boost the immune system in studies on living animals, as opposed to test-tube studies. The results are published online in the British Ecological Society’s Functional Ecology.Researchers from the University of Freiburg and the Max Plank Institute for Ornithology in Germany offered a group of blackcaps a choice of two foods. The foods were identical in all respects except for the amount of flavonoids they contained, and the researchers found that the blackcaps actively selected the food with added flavonoids. As well as the food selection experiment, the study also looked at whether or not the flavonoids had an impact on the birds’ health. They found that, compared with birds not fed the antioxidants, blackcaps that ate | | By: Whole Food And More | | |

| | Birds of a Feather... | | 2008-03-18 04:37:57 | | ...always flock together. It's a basic understanding: you are who you associate with. Who you choose to spend your time with, are seen with, relax with, will determine who you become. It may sound overly generalizing, but it's the truth. The people you choose to call your friends are the people that will ultimately shape and mold your future. If your friends are interested in cars, pop music, and dancing, most likely you will be into those things as well. If your group of friends are into networking, planning ahead, and thinking positively, you will most likely pick up those good habits as well. It can just as easily work the other way. People outside your niche of friends will judge you by the people you surround yourself with and you do the exact same thing when you observe other people. You instinctively observe the people a person associates with and will make an instant judgment of that individual based almost entirely on his/her friends.Be careful who you spend your time w | | By: Big Fish | | |

There was an NCAA tournament in progress at the time and people inside the building described the increasing air pressure in great detail. 20 people were hurt, some severely, but no one perished, thank GOD. But it was much calmer in Florida as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-4. Daisuke Matsuzaka was servicably good, giving up a couple runs in his four innings. He had this to say after the contest ended after 6.5 innings...“In terms of the four games that I’ve pitched so far, I feel that things are coming along well,” Matsuzaka said through a translator. “As I’ve said before, I’m a slow starter. So, in my fifth start, the thing I’ll be working on is focusing on my first inning. From the third inning onward, I felt like I got a lot better,” Matsuzaka said. “It would be nice to bring that state to the start of the game.”Manny slammed a two run four hundred plus foot home run | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever

| | Tips on Photographing Birds in Flight. | | 2008-01-15 02:58:00 | | 1. The problem of stabilityStability starts, not with your camera, but with your feet and legs. As bipeds, humans are inherently unstable, any movement of our arms and/or shoulders is immediately compensated for by a complex series of lower body adjustments, all of which contribute to camera and lens movement. You can only be moderately successful shooting while standing and when it is windy you might as well forget it entirely. The answer is to sit on a chair or on a stool with three legs. No one wants to drag around a four-legged canvas chair and they are not stable on rough terrain. There are a number of three-legged stools available but most are not suitable. Rough terrain and the necessity of supporting a heavy body that will twist and lean to one side or the other precludes most of the lightweight camping stools or massage stools I have see advertised. The solution: for several years I have used a Swedish Walk-Stool which is very strong, easily collapsible, portable and comfortable. Made in Sweden (with all the design expertise we expect in a Swedish product) it is available all over the world; you can find a distributor at www.walkstool.com. With your lower half stabilized you can easily rotate your upper body from the waist and move your arms up and down while following the bird. But that’s not all there is to stability.Richard Pavekmore : fourthirdsphoto | | By: DSLR CAMERAS ONLINE | | |

| | Birds of Prey Centre | | 2007-08-08 22:40:19 | | On our last full day in Cornwall the other month we decided on a visit to the Birds of Prey Centre, the other side of Newquay from where we were staying. It's a relatively small place, but even though neither my wife or I are especially fanatical about raptors we had a good time. The weather was looking a bit dodgy when we arrived, and it wasn't certain if the flight display would be able to proceed later on. We had nearly an hour, wandering around and looking at all the birds, before it started chucking it down. Instead of the display the owners decided to host an impromptu talk in one of the inside areas. I think I actually enjoyed this more than I would have the flight display - instead of fiddling with the camera all the time trying to get 'the shot' of a bird in flight we actually got to chat with the owners. | | Birds Help Trees Soar | | 2007-08-02 06:17:00 | | Birds boost tree height up to 33 percent by munching on pesky parasites that can literally suck the life out of the tall-growing plants, a new study shows. Birds remove harmful species of beetles, caterpillars, ants and aphids from branches, Mooney explained, increasing the vigor of trees. His findings are detailed in the August issue of the journal Ecology.

| | Joba Chamberlain Likes to Chase Birds | | 2007-07-09 02:47:39 | | During the Futures All-Star game today, former Husker pitcher Joba Chamberlain came in to pitch the third inning. After a foul ball, Joba strolled toward a bird that had located itself between the pitcher’s mound and home plate.
He tried to spook it off, but it just casually wandered toward the foul line. Suddenly realizing that he was on national TV, Joba turned around and returned to the mound.
After the inning, when interviewed by Erin Andrews, Joba laughed and said that the bird was just hanging out, looking for some seeds or something.

| | (One year ago today) THE SENSE OF THE WHITE BIRDS | | 2007-06-09 00:01:00 | | O! White birds fly down the raging river lineAnd white hot are the sun’s rays bathing the shore,And I think of this war and of my own borrowed complicityThat will be my shrieking, loathsome marrow felt forevermore! You cast it masterfully, dangling your lureOf every feeble people’s swindler in your damn book. You’d rather not have “pull out” swim the raging water,But it’s out there! The nibblers bleed from your despotic hook!I think of all the Iraqi people, and I weep. And of their homes and shame at having believed in us;Freedom, democracy, clean water, safe streets, living;I think of your lies and at once am asphyxiated by our oily lust!O! The white birds flying the river can see it,They can see the shoreline and they can see the nectar,They glimpse a fabrication in America’s half-truths,For they see the ancient beauty of Iraq swilling in fumes of war!The bird senses our pandering, illicit ambition,The looming and buckling hell of shorelines stony crustAs the warring winds | | By: Poetic Justice (Dont burn the flag. | | Birds, Bees, and Moths Drive Flower Evolution | | 2007-06-08 07:00:00 | | IaFlowers evolve in a predictable fashion to match the mouthparts of pollinating birds and insects, rather than engaging in a gradual arms race#148; between flower and pollinator, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis and the University of California, Santa Barbara. An article describing the study is published in the June 7 issue of the journal Nature.

| | | | Billions of Birds | | 2007-05-03 00:05:45 | | We don’t live in a particularly rural area. In fact, from our house you can hear the roar of the highway in the not-so-distant distance. The Boston Post Road is just a few blocks away and the mall is only a mile or so down the road.
Still, we are fortunate enough to have a wooded area at the back of our house, with a stream running through it, and all the neighboring backyards are open and unfenced. It’s the perfect environment for lot of birds.
In the morning, our back yard is a cacophony of birdsong. We’ve got quite a variety of feathered friends chiming in. There are the usual visitors–sparrows and robins and mourning doves and crows, cardinals, bluejays, and starlings. We also have some woodpeckers and a lovely pair of yellow-bellied sapsuckers.
I’ve also seen a great-crested flycatcher and a scarlet tanager–bright flashes of color as they zip past. There are finches, but I couldn’t tell you what kind. There might be a mockingbird&nda | | By: Smoochmonkey
| | Gooney Birds on Midway Atoll | | 2007-03-12 23:23:00 | | Just like you'd guess from its name, Midway Atoll is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, half way between the US mainland and Japan. That geography made it a strategic outpost during the second world war.The atoll's best known inhabitant would have to be the gooney bird.Over three-quarters of a million laysan albatross or gooneys nest at midway every year, that's seventy one percent of the world's population. From July to October, most birds are out at sea, feeding at night on fish and squid. They come ashore for the breeding season. The chicks hatch around January to February, and spend the next six months practising their take-offs and landings. These still images are taken from movies that NHNZ Images has in its collection, and which are available for sale to include in your production, please check out our website for the on-line catalogue, demo reels, and soon to be launched newsletter. If you'd like to subscribe to this blog, check out the panel on the right, and while you' | | By: NHNZ Images | | |
| | Love Birds as pets!! | | 2007-02-22 06:40:00 | | I have a pair of love birds who are very dear friends of mine. I just love spending time with them. I keep talking to them whenever I feel a lil lonely and when there is no one around. Their funny antic, gestures and the deep bonding churns up myriad emotions in me. Today I did a bit of a research on the net on these adorable and cute species of birds and here is what I found.Species: There are several species of lovebirds (genus Agapornis and but the most commonly found species in the pet trade include peach faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis, masked lovebirds (Agapornis personata) and Fischer's lovebirds (Agapornis fischeri). There are many color mutations found in peach faced lovebirds and several mutations in some of the other species, so there are many color variations of lovebirds available.Size : Lovebirds are small, compact parrots about 5-6 inches in length.Expected Life Span: Up to 15 years or more.Temperament: Very active, curious, and playful, lovebirds pack a lot of p | | By: Pet Greeting Cards & Ecards | | |

| | Birds, snow, cats and creativity | | 2007-01-16 15:44:00 | | Well. The title says it all! LOLHere's the scene from our front door Saturday morning:Don't those poor little birdies look COLD? And yes, I know, we need to take the Christmas lights down.Thursday, we took poor Buddy in to get a few things removed; claws & um, boyhood things. He was a hurting unit when he came home Friday.I've decided I want to try making stitch markers & jewelry. I'm still waiting for a tool kit, but I managed to make one (yes, ONE!) stitch marker and a couple of bracelets for the girls. I didn't get a photo of the bracelets before they went off to school this morning, but I'll get one later. Meanwhile, here's the lone stitch marker:I've been working on Mark's sweater exclusively. I want to get it done for him while it's still winter! LOL And the UPS guy came yesterday to drop off a package and just ranted & raved about his scarf, how much he liked it and how everyone comments on it. Gave me a big ole warm fuzzy! Here's the sweater in progress:I'm doing th | | By: Rachel's Ramblings | | |
| | Birds that make teeth (Press Release + Summary) | | 2006-11-18 20:21:03 | | Contents:1) Birds that make teeth (Press Release)Gone does not necessarily mean forgotten, especially in biology. A recent finding by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and colleagues from the University of Manchester have found new evidence that the ability to form previously lost organs--in this case, teeth--can be maintained millions of years after the last known ancestor possessed them. Birds do not have teeth. However, their ancestors did--about 70 - 80 million years ago. The evolutionary loss of teeth corresponded to the formation of the beak that is present in all living birds. Nonetheless, it has been known that if mouse tooth-forming tissue is in contact with bird jaw tissue, the bird tissue is able to follow the instructions given by the mouse tissue and participate in making teeth, and that these teeth look very much like those of mammals. However, Drs. Matthew Harris and John F. Fallon and colleagues have found that modern birds retain the ability to make | | By: Evolution Research - Main Blog | | |
