| | Picture the Homeless to put Mayor Bloomberg on trial | | 2008-06-12 17:55:07 | | Got an email today from Picture the Homeless, a New York organization by and for homeless people. The trial will be held Tuesday, June 24, at St. Bartholomew's Church, Park Avenue at 51st St., in the Chapel from 1 to 3:30.At 3:30, a march to deliver the sentence will begin. If you're in or near New York, go and support Picture the Homeless.mmmAtom

| Bloomberg, Wal-Mart and You | | 2008-04-15 21:00:00 | | New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s latest volley in his war on gun ownership is convincing Wal-Mart that they need to film every firearm purchase. The goal, according to the mayor, is to reduce crime. But we know gun control doesn't equal crime control. And this reeks of a public relations stunt instead of a crime-fighting measure. Gun owners who buy a firearm at Wal-Mart, or any other gun store for that matter, already go through a background check before the purchase can be made. What's...(read more) | | By: An American Warning | | |

| | Bloomberg: Yankees Under a "Curse" | | 2008-04-12 13:12:00 | | The insanity continues. You may have heard that silliness with the Red Sox shirt (and other items) being buried underneath some concrete by a Red Sox fan at the new Yankee Stadium as reported by the New York Post yesterday. Well, it took another turn as the fan, who name is "Gino" and grew up in the Bronx as a Yankee-hating Red Sox fan, produced proof yesterday, namely some cell phone shots of him pouring the concrete over the said items last August.Yankee officials denied last night that any such thing happened, but had to backtrack after this Gino fellow produced the photos to the Post. And in the story today, they went to Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, who said this:"It is an outrage!" the Boston-born Bloomberg told The Post before the Yanks played the Sox last night."The one thing that I'd really like to be able to do is to go in there and pitch for the Yankees and beat the Red Sox with a perfect game. That would be a way to end the curse," the mayor said."They envy the Yankees | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

| | Homelessness increases under Bloomberg's plan to end homelessness in NYC | | 2008-04-08 19:39:36 | | Four years into Mayor Bloomberg's five year plan to end homelessness in New York City, more people than ever spent time in a shelter last year, according to the ninth annual "State of the Homeless" report issued by the Coalition for the Homeless last month..102,187 people spent time in a New York City shelter last year, a 5.8% increase over 2006."For the second year in a row, more families sought shelter (up by 10.7%) while fewer families were moved into permanent housing (down 6.9%), " the report said. The Bloomberg administration's refusal to issue Section 8 vouchers and access to public housing for homeless families is contributing to the increase in homelessness. In addition, stringent standards for shelter eligibility implemented last year denied shelter to dozens of families, two-thirds of whom were actually eligible for shelter even under those standards.Single homelessness has seen a decline for the second year in a row, but the Coalition marks the decrease as a result of sin | | By: Michaelann Land | | |

| | Bloomberg Won't Run for President | | 2008-02-28 01:01:59 | | Which he announced today in a NY Times Op Ed piece. In it he charges the candidates to tell America the truth about the issues facing the nation and to work towards common sense solutions to solve America's problems.from the NY Times:WATCHING the 2008 presidential campaign, you sometimes get the feeling that the candidates — smart, all of them — must know better. They must know we can’t fix our economy and create jobs by isolating America from global trade. They must know that we can’t fix our immigration problems with border security alone. They must know that we can’t fix our schools without holding teachers, principals and parents accountable for results. They must know that fighting global warming is not a costless challenge. And they must know that we can’t keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals unless we crack down on the black market for them. The vast majority of Americans know that all of this is true, but — politics being what it is — the candidates se | | By: Dyre Portents | | |

| | U S Elections: Big Winners Emerging with January 19 Primaries: Billionaire Bloomberg Hovering in the Background | | 2008-01-18 11:43:02 | | From Billionaires Blog By Philip FernandoDemocratic Party front runners are emerging in the US primary election process. It will either be a woman or a black candidate, Hillary Clinton or Barrack Obama, while the Republicans are still having McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Giuliani and Thompson vying for top honors, according to most polls. Primaries in Nevada and Michigan (19 January) and South Carolina (19 Jan for Republicans, 26 January for Democrats) could reduce the field of candidates to just one or two per party. Meanwhile, New York Mayor, a Republican billionaire Bloomberg entering the fray is being talked of. He will be a logical rallying point if Republicans are divided.Bloomberg has enough money to wage an independent candidacy. Bloomberg is intriguingly a “fresh prospect” to many. His message seems to be “Don’t stray too far from the consensus positions, because I can do it all by myself and upset all your electoral calculations. However, if front runner emerge on February 5th Super Tuesday, the winners will have a few months to rest, re-group and, of course, raise millions of dollars before the real dog fight - the general election on 4 November. This is a historic US election: the next president might be a woman or African-American, and this is the first time both parties have 'open' nomination slots (that is, there is not an incumbent president or vice-president candidate). Barrack Obama may have missed an opportunity to put the race for the Democratic nomination away with a second solid win over the front-runner Clinton. Obama is now on the heels of Clinton trying to gain the upper hand while explaining how he fell so far short of expectations in New Hampshire.Continue reading...

| | Bloomberg Won't Run | | 2007-08-22 02:21:55 | | From Reuters:Bloomberg says won't run for presidentBy Daniel Trotta NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he cannot win the U.S. presidency and won't run, the strongest statement to date about his intentions for the 2008 presidential race. Bloomberg previously had said he had no plans to run, which failed to quiet speculation that he was planning an independent bid for the White House. In an interview with Dan Rather of HDNet television to be aired on Tuesday, Bloomberg was asked if he was running and if he was going to run for president. He answered "no" to both questions. He refused to categorically rule out any future run, then added: "The answer is 'no.' ... If somebody asks me where I stand, I tell them. And that's not a way to get elected generally. Nobody's going to elect me president of the United States." moreI was hoping he'd run as I believe he would have really shaken up the establishment regardless of if he won or not. | | Unity08 and Bloomberg: Perfect marriage? | | 2007-06-22 03:27:43 | | From The Politico: Few in the political world are more keenly interested in the ramifications of "Mike's Big Move" -- as New York's Daily News proclaimed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decision to sever his ties with the Republican Party -- than former Carter White House official Gerald Rafshoon. He and his partner, Hotline founder Doug Bailey, are the proud parents of Unity08, a group conceived to offer an alternative to next year's Democratic and GOP nominees by building a "coalition from the middle" through an online convention. And Rafshoon told Politico that Unity08 has been holding secret conversations with three candidates interested in running for Unity08's nomination.(snip)The party's platform has been focused on offering solutions to globalization, campaign finance reform, the national debt, energy independence and terrorism. | | | Bloomberg: The Biggest Little Man in Big Government | | 2007-06-20 23:55:00 | | Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday he is no longer going to be a Republican. Is anyone really surprised? The man has practically reinvented how far Big Government policies can go to create a nanny state. I wouldn’t have been surprised if I heard he created an ordinance requiring three hours of fresh air each day for all New Yorkers. The truth is that there is nothing conservative about Bloomberg, both social and economic. Generally, Conservative governors will hold restraint with their power. However, with Bloomberg, there was not one aspect of New Yorkers’ lives he did not believe he had the obligation to intrude. Maybe he was just being a “compassionate conservative?” In reality, everyone knows he only ran as a Republican because the way mayoral elections work in New York. What is worse is that Bloomberg, with his multibillion dollars may now run for President. God help us all. | | Bloomberg Leaves GOP | | 2007-06-20 05:50:29 | | From the NY Times Blog:Michael R. Bloomberg, a longtime Democrat who switched to the Republican Party to run for mayor of New York City in 2001, announced this evening that he is changing his party status and registering as an independent. His office released this statement at 6:05 p.m. (EST): I have filed papers with the New York City Board of Elections to change my status as a voter and register as unaffiliated with any political party. Although my plans for the future haven’t changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city.A nonpartisan approach has worked wonders in New York: we’ve balanced budgets, grown our economy, improved public health, reformed the school system and made the nation’s safest city even safer. We have achieved real progress by overcoming the partisanship that too often puts narrow interests above the common good. | | Bloomberg leaves GOP and why it matters | | 2007-06-20 01:05:00 | | New York City's Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced today that he has left the Republican Party.Mayor Bloomberg is now independent of party, and this recent move away from the GOP has given new life to rumours that he could run for President in 2008. Although he insists he has no plans for a 2008 run, he, like Al Gore, is frequently mentioned as a possible candidate.WHY HE MADE THE RIGHT MOVEBloomberg said today that "The politics of partisanship and the resulting inaction and excuses have paralyzed decision-making, primarily at the federal level," and you know what, he's right! Our politicians in Washington don't give a **** about us, because all they care about is, you guessed it, money! While I do agree with him that partisanship can cause a paralyzed government, I believe that a healthy level of partisanship is an essential part of American democracy. | | Bloomberg: All NYC cabs to be hybrids by 2012 | | 2007-05-24 11:05:08 | | That’s right. Michael Bloomberg, the current mayor of New York City, announced plans of replacing the current taxi fleet of 13,000 into hybrids by 2012. The plan takes effective immediately as the current hybrid cab fleet of 400 will be increased to 1000 by October of 2008. The current hybrid fleet consists of mostly the Ford Escape Hybrid, Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Saturn Vue Green Line.
The plan also announced that by October 2008, all taxi cabs would have to have minimum fuel consumption of 25mpg. By 2009, it will be increased to 30mpg. The popular Ford Crown Victoria taxi cab only gets 15mpg by the 2008 EPA standards, whereas the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid serves up 34mpg. Since all taxi cabs in NYC will suffer major traffic congestion and slow cruising speeds, emissions would drastically decrease and mileage will increase. The reason being that a hybrid motor stays all-electric in low speeds, something which NYC cabs will face commonly.
