    Boat Paint
    2008-06-30 17:39:35
I've been doing a bit of research around on paint for my boat, including anti-fouling paint for the bottom. Opinions, as in everything, abound. Even the question of whether you need anti-fouling paint for a trailer boat is much in doubt, by some. It seems to boil down to how long you're in the water. Of course where you boat has a good bit of effect also, since the various scummy critters vary depending on fresh/salt water, water temperature, lighting conditions, and who knows what else. I wanted to list a few resources I've ran across. Don't know that I've made final decisions yet, although I have a few leanings. George Kirby, Jr. Paint Co. - a classic, old style, real world business that is known for great products and service Pettit Paints - currently they resell the Hydrocoat antifouling paint. For a multi-season ablative paint, this seems to be my choice. Multi-season means it can dry out on a trailer and still work when you go back in the water. Ablative means it wears away and

    Submarine Boat
    2008-06-25 20:48:25
Got an email from Kay referring to her and her husband Doug's web site where they are chronicling the home build of their personal submarine. Not something that everybody (even boatbuilders) will choose to bite off. They also have details on a ROV (underwater Remote Operated Vehicle) that they provide plans for building your own. Their next project is going to be a home build Origami (steel) sail boat. Lot's of details and things they are willing to share and help teach you via their postings. Really neat site that I can tell I'm going to enjoy.

Missing the boat on international funds
    2008-06-18 11:07:00
If your adviser is only now recommending you move some of your portfolio into global stocks, it might be time for a new adviser. Watch out for these red flags.NEW YORK (Money) -- Question: I read your recent article in Money magazine regarding the craze for international investing. This past week my adviser has recommended this move since I have very little money in the international market. She recommended Nationwide International Growth Fund (GIGAX) and the Ivy Asset Strategy Fund (WASAX). What do you think of her advice? The Mole's Answer: Boy, are the red flags waving. I see at least three warning signs that it's time to start looking for a new adviser.Red Flag #1 - Previous lack of international stocksI would first start by asking your adviser why you currently have so little money in the international stock market. We've been a global economy for many years and I'd want to know why your adviser thought putting all of your eggs in a basket of U.S. stocks was the right thing. When yo

Wall Street and Main Street: In the Same Boat and Sinking Together
    2008-06-13 14:24:00
Once upon a time, what happened on Wall Street didn't matter much to the folks on Main Street, and vice versa. But those days are long gone, as I discuss in the accompanying video with Dennis Berman, The WSJ's Global Deals Editor. This decade, particularly, the U.S. economy has been driven largely by debt financing. As a result, the Wall Street event known as the "credit crunch" has had a definitive impact on U.S. consumers. In turn, the constrained consumer is going to keep the downward pressure on Wall Street firms, whose profitability is tied to the securitization of loans, be they for homes, autos, boats, education, etc.In other words, we're all in this together, and a long way from the bottom.

Devlin Designing Boat Builders - new web page
    2008-06-07 17:24:23
In another of our revisits of an old friend, Devlin Designing Boat Builders has totally revamped their web page. Lot's more detail, current news and comments, and much easier to navigate. Make sure and check it out. I came close to choosing Devlin's Czarinna 30' for my build... in some ways I still wish I had, but after working on my existing build, I realize that it would have been more than I could bite off. Now that I've learned a lot, I might stand a chance, but it's a lot more complex design, and would have cost a lot more in materials than I could have afforded. All boats/designs are tradeoffs. Drilling holes in the bottom of your boat
    2008-05-20 20:48:23
Spent just a little while tonight getting ready to put the keel bolts on tonight. Drilled holes through the two mounted layers of keel and got things ready for that. Discovered that the bolts I got were about 2" too long, so I'll go ahead and swap those out before I get them in place. Also discovered that I started the keel about 8" too far from the stern. I have no idea how I managed that. No big deal, I'll just add a bit more back there, but it was annoying. About the last hole I drilled it suddenly dawned on me that I was busy drilling holes in the bottom of my boat that I've spent so long getting sealed up. It would have pretty much floated at this point, except now there are holes through the bottom :-). We'll get those bolts in place and the rest of the keel will cover that up nicely. Weather ran me back in before I really got much more done. Time = 20 minutes

    Boat Donations at Boat Angel!
    2008-05-19 08:15:29
My friend over at The Broken Bow sent me another interesting link to check out – BoatAngel. A quick browse of the site reveals that Angel Ministries is the root of BoatAngel, which utilizes boat donations to create children's animations and anti-drug documentaries. At http://www.carangel.com/projects.html, one can preview several of the positive media produced by the ministry. BoatAngel uses boat donations to create a difference in children's lives via the creation of free children's DVDs, e.g., positive children’s animations and anti-drug documentaries. Angel Ministries averages less than 5% of revenues for overhead, promotes itself as an organization that offers to help others e.g., single mothers, orphans, the homeless, teen and adult drug users, and prisoners, via car and boat donations. Anyone can become a Car Angel and select the charity organization that will benefit by donating a vehicle, e.g., car, boat, plane, motorcycle, or RV, or a house. In the process, the donor rec

    Dragon Boat Race
    2008-05-16 10:14:00
legend has it that dragon boat races originated during the Chu Dynasty (481-221 BC) in China. It was the Warring States Period, a turbulent time as states were fighting each other. Concerned for his kingdom, Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister, tried to advise him emperor but was rejected and banished. Dejected, he committed suicide by throwing himself into the river. When the people found out, they rushed to the water in their boats and started beating drums and splashing water furiously with their paddles to scare the fishes and evil spirits away form his body.

    Biodiesel Boat Circumnavigates Globe
    2008-05-08 21:40:05
An interesting alternative fuel design that is "out there" now. I have some doubts about some of the biodiesel stuff from an economic and environmental viewpoint (should we be burning food for fuel???), but depending on how it's made, it might be ok. Regardless of that, it certainly works. This 100% biodiesel-powered, 78 ft wave-piercing trimaran aims to set an around-the-world speed record while maintaining a net zero carbon footprint. The Earthrace left Sagunto, Spain, on April 27, and has already made excellent time across the Atlantic, landing in Panama just 8 days later. Read the rest here... (including a video). You can also check out the Earthrace site for info. We first covered this boat with a link to this National Geographic spread back in December.

    Boat trapped in garden

You always hear about people building boats in garages or even backyards that they can't get them out of... well here it is again :-)Not really, but the neighbors have really been wondering. The man has build a very nice trimaran for he and his wife and has it ready to go... now he's looking for all hands on deck to pick it up and move it out. Thankfully its of lightweight construction. Looks like beautiful work. Check the article for more pictures."It's not as though I'm some idiot who got the measurements wrong and is now stuck with a boat he can't move," he said. "I knew from the start that once the boat was finished I would face some problems getting it out of the garden. Looks like he came to some of the same conclusions that I did about having a building site that is convenient to your house... makes running out and working for a few minutes much more practical (and solves the "out of site, out of mind" issues too)."If I had built it on a more I accessible site, it would have me

    Vintage Boat Plans
    2008-04-01 22:03:28
A recent comment points us to a site with some more free vintage boat plans. Might be worth a look and see if they have anything you are interested in.Welcome to vintageboatplans.com... Here, you'll find many of the old boat designs of days gone by. Cabin cruisers, rowboats, skiffs, dorys, kayaks, paddle boats, john boats, hydroplanes, sailboats and more. These old plans usually include materials lists, dimensions and instructional text. Each set of plans is in ONE file so you don't have to download multiple image files of different sizes and deal with sizing and printing them correctly. Some plans were compiled by others and they didn't improve them at all. All the plans I compiled myself were completely digitally restored and enlarged, improving the quality at least 100%. Old brown pages were restored to a crisp white to save expensive ink when printing. This process was extremely time consuming.

    Boat Angel
    2008-03-31 19:32:05
I don't think there is anything more noble than helping your fellow man when things are tough. There are many great charities and organizations out there that do a great job and are worth supporting. One of these great charities is boatangel. Boatangel is a little bit different than the usual charity, they take boat donations and then sell these boats with the proceeds going to charity. This Boat Donation Charity is a fantastic idea and supports children's animations with a strong message and anti-drug documentaries. Boatangel also supports teen boys rehabilitation homes and provides uplifting books for the prisons. There are also plans to build another outreach center which will impact more lives for good.It is great to see a innovative idea like this be put to such good use. Boat donations can be made all around the US so if you have a boat you no longer need and want to support a great charity take some time to visit their website.

    Storing Your Boat
    2008-03-29 07:17:20
One of the keys to owning a boat is the question of where to keep it when you aren't using it. Your budget, convenience, and availability are all keys that should be talked about.TraileringThere's no less expensive way to store a boat than on a trailer in your driveway or yard. A trailer offers you the advantages of taking your boat into different areas of water, taking your boat out whenver you like, or just saving fees on your winter storage. Buying The Right Fishing Boat
    2008-03-29 06:46:49
If you are planning to buy a boat, you'll first need to evaluate what you plan to do with it. If your primary purpose is fishing, then you'll want to look into boats that are designed primarily for fishing. If you happen to be a tournament fisherman, or hope to be, then you probably wouldn't be happy with a boat less than a 150 HP motor and shorter than 19 feet in length. Those of you who plan to fish in really deep water on a regular basis will probably need a 200 HP motor and at least 20 feet

Rev. Jeremiah Wright: Obama's Swift Boat?
    2008-03-17 11:34:00
So, the weekend has come and gone. We've all seen the edited/bleeped clips on the news. We've all made the trip to YouTube to see the UN-edited clips. And what do we make of it? Can this Rev. Wright be the swift boat-like torpedo that sinks the "Hope & Change" Obama Love Boat?[First off, let me make this clear for the flamers; I'M NOT PICKING SIDES FOR OR AGAINST OBAMA. This is just informational in regards to the situation.]It quite possibly could be, when a couple factors are taken into account. One item of contention is that until now, Obama's minister and church have almost no mention in regards to Obama's campaign. Save the occasional mention to deflect the "He's a muslim," factor. There's more info about this HERE, and HERE.As mentioned in the MRC articles, a search of network transcripts shows both Wright and his church are rarely ever mentioned, with exception to defense mechanisms.Another issue is the possibility of Florida and Michigan's delegates now being counted, if th

    How to anchor a boat
    2008-03-16 19:31:23
Anchoring a boat is not quite as simple as chucking the anchor over the side of the boat and tying it off, but with some simple tips to remember it doesn't have to be a nightmare either.1. How to attach a boat anchor (with video)
    2008-03-12 01:49:21
Surprisingly, even to me, I have written about attaching a boat anchor to the boat before. However, I get many requests each week for a post about this and it is about time I addressed this topic.Attaching the anchor rope to the boatThe most important consideration when attaching your anchor to the boat is to make sure that you are using a secure and strong knot. I have heard countless stories of people attaching their anchor with a single overhand knot (or granny knot as we call them), or even worse not attaching it at all, and throwing it overboard. These stories usually end with someone diving after the anchor rope and finally in tears! The anchor bend knot is my choice for attaching the anchor to the boat. It is a strong and very secure knot, but is surprisingly easy to tie. This knot can also be used for attaching the anchor rope to the anchor chain (or directly to the anchor in emergencies).Instructional VideoI hope this little post was helpful.

Buying the Right Boat for You and Your Family
    2008-03-06 05:49:41
Are you looking to buy a family boat? If you are, it is important that you think long and hard about your purchase. Buying a family boat is different than buying a boat for yourself, as you may have children or teenagers onboard that you need to worry about. For that reason, there are a number of factors that should be taken into consideration before you make your purchase. Safety is an important factor to take into consideration when buying a family boat, as your children may be onboard with you. Never buy a boat without first doing the proper amount of research first. The good news is that this research is easy to do online. Many internet users and boat owners express their concerns and complaints online. Be sure to read all information that you find online that is associated with the family boat you would like to buy. This includes concerns, comments, complaints, and praises. This feedback, as well as traditional ratings can easily be found online with a standard internet

Boat Financing - What To Look For In Boat Financing!
    2008-03-03 06:05:00
Getting finance for your Boat is very much the same like for your home or your car. However, if your lender is familiar with boat financing, it would be of great help. A lender with experience in boat financing would be able to give good advice on your choice of boat and whether the boat of your choice is worth the price that you are paying for. They would also help you in determining the re-sale value of boat through depreciation, so that you get a good deal.Financiers also ensure that there is clear and legal ownership for the boat. It is important to establish and ensure proper ownership for your boat as this could lead to trouble later on. Purchasing a boat with unclear title can lead to disputes and even lawsuits in future.[ finance , and ,money ]Look AroundThere are few things that you need to look for when chosing your lender. First off, you may have to decide how much money you can put in upfront as the down-payment. The rest of the money for the boat will be financed. This aga

    Staten Island Boat Graveyard
    2008-02-14 20:28:30
It seems like many of us are attracted to boats at the sad ends of their lives. Wrecks, abandoned hulls, whatever. Urban exploration has grown more popular, or at least with the Internet its easier to share these intrepid adventurers' travels. This photo collection is a great set of pictures of a bunch of early 20th century boats that are way past their glory days. Traversing through the rusted hulks of these ships was a pretty incredible experience! The weather was great and the water was calm (although a little stinky, there is a lot of polluted muck in the harbor). I have seen this place from the shore once before, and it is nothing compared to being right in there... the ships themselves are in terrible shape structurally, but I would've liked to climb around a lot more if I had more time over there! This was another nice break from the hospitals, and completely different... I like how these photos came out and enjoyed taking them.

How to reverse a trailer - launching a boat.
    2008-02-10 23:15:58
Firstly position your vehicle and trailer as straight as you can and roughly a trailer's length from the place you want to reverse. Keep your eyes on the trailer out of the driver's window while slowly reversing, and start turning the steering wheel towards the right. Grasp the wheel at the bottom and steer gently and progressively - it is fat easier to add more steering than to correct it after turning too much. Grasping the wheel at the bottom should prevent you from over-turning the wheel and if your steering wheel starts straight, you will know throughout the turn, without looking, that at the lowest point your wheels are straight again. When the trailer starts to turn, start straightening up while still reversing. Leave straightening up too late and moving the wheel to quickly will cause the trailer to jack-knife. Eventually you will be steering in the opposite direction whilst still reversing. Bring the vehicle's front around to follow the trai

Another Folding Bike for your Boat - now available in the U.S.
    2008-02-05 19:56:49
We've had some bicycle notes before... an electric bike, and some other good folding bike links. The bicycle is a popular transport method for when you go ashore, providing a compact method of transport that doesn't have much if any ongoing cost, doesn't require insurance, is always available (unlike borrowing the marina car) and even provides exercise. Of course hauling heavy items and foul weather are downsides, but you can't have everything :-)This Business Week article details another new entry into the U.S. market in the folding bike scene. The Strida  5.0 sounds like a nice rig.

Report from Boat ShowFor over fifty years the Tulsa Downtown Lions Club has sponsored the Tulsa Boat, Sport, and Travel Show at the formerly known IPE Building, but now known as the Quick Trip Center at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds in Tulsa, OK. This boat show has long been one of the top ten in the nation and is known as the starting signal of the new "lake season". All the boat dealers have very nice displays of the new boat lines. It is a great place to get a feel of the "air" for the soon to be here spring. Yes, it is still cold, but what a great time to dream of spring and summer and the lake. Of course the lake I like to see people dream of is Grand Lake located just a little over an hour's drive from Tulsa. Grand Lake and boating go hand in hand. It is such a pretty lake with varying scenry and great water to fish, swim, wake-board, or ski on. Home ownership on lakes is very popular for retirement or second homes and such is Grand Lake and Grove, OK, the larg

    Boat Ramp Etiquette
    2007-12-28 22:32:35
I found this great little article during my web surfing this morning and thought I would share it with my readers. I recommend reading the whole fishing and boating article here.A good day on the water can be spoiled by a lack of ‘boat ramp etiquette’. This refers to someone who has insufficient consideration or understanding for other ramp users, isn’t prepared and takes too long to either launch or retrieve a vessel.LAUNCHINGPrepare your boat before approaching the ramp. This includes loading all gear, checking fuel, removing tie-downs, fitting bungs, turning on battery switch, finding the key, etc. There is nothing more frustrating for other boat ramp users than watching someone drive onto the apron of the ramp and begin doing all the above jobs whilst everyone waits. When you boat is completely ready to launch, get in line and wait for your turn to use the ramp.Always check a boat ramp before reversing down it. Check for length of ramp, drop-offs, etc.Carefully back down the ramp and get the boat in the water quickly and calmly. When launching use a long rope secured to the bow to control the boat and clear other boats and trailers. On larger boats an additional rope on the stern will assist in windy or wash conditions.Have someone on board to immediately start the boat and/or move it way from the ramp so the next person can proceed. Park your car and return to your waiting boat that has been moved away from the ramp (the sand or nearby jetty) is a good option.RETRIEVINGExtra care and patience are needed when returning to the ramp at the end of the day. Tempers can fray easily after a day of sun and excitement. Children will be tired. Alcohol can cause unhelpful behaviour so try to stay calm and be as prepared as you possibly can.Organise your gear whilst underway back to the ramp, not once you get there.Approach slowly in congested areas for the safety of yourself and others.Queue on a sandy beach if possible or make sure you identify who is befo

    Ken's Paper Boat Page
    2007-12-27 20:45:50
This is a really slick site chronicling the use of 'paper' to build boats... from the 1800's until present day, this material has been used to build full sized boats. All of us who are interested in building and alternative materials will find something of interest here. Paper Boats? Is this for real? This web page is devoted to an obscure subject in the history of technology: the manufacture of full size boats from paper during the later half of the 19th century. Not toy boats, but boats people could ride around in; racing shells, canoes and rowboats. There was even at least one steam launch built. This may seem like an extremely odd thing to be doing, but it made sense at the time. (Trust me!) If you read elsewhere on these pages you'll discover why. Start with the "Short History" below. Today, amateur boat builders occasionally take a stab at making a paper boat for their own and other's amusement. For several years there was even a quarterly newsletter for paper boa

    More boat lifts
    2007-12-15 10:34:17
Our friend Klaus Hafner sends us more links to interesting boat lifts on canals around the world. I thought I had covered the Falkirk Wheel before, but I don't see it now. Its a fascinating and beautiful piece of engineering. Isn't even as energy intensive as you might think, given the balance between the two (extremely large) tubs of water. I hadn't seen this video of it in operation before: Yet another design is shown on this French page. You can see some drawings/pictures part way down the page. Klaus reports that wet and cold are keeping him from outdoor boat welding, but he is working on some plastic work for tankage.

    Boat shed - started
    2007-12-01 20:27:44
Dane and I got busy and started erecting the new boat shed. Right now, if water leaks in the various holes in the tarp, etc. it mostly just falls through to the ground. That won't be the case once I start skinning things and I don't want it wet before I get the epoxy/fiberglass/paint/whatever on it. So we need a better cover. As I discussed before, a PVC frame just seemed a good idea to me, so I went with it. I was taking the plans from PVCPlans.com and modifying them to suit my location, ideas and available materials. Their plans called for long, one piece sections for each hoop, with the "ridgeline" connections done with T's slipped over the pipe. Well, I can't easily source 1" pipe in 20' sections, and even if I stepped down to 3/4" which I could get, transporting it wasn't going to work. I did have "cross" pieces available (4 way connectors) and 10' lengths that I could easily deal with, so my plan was to have 2 10' pieces that met at a 4-way a
