Jays,Halladay blank Bombers in 5-0 win
    2008-07-11 17:05:00
ON THE MOUND:Joba Chamberlain pitched well tonight, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in 6.2 IP; he didn't walk a batter and struck out 9. He would have finished the 7th, but Robinson Cano lost a pop out in the Rogers Centre roof which would have been the final out of the inning. He was also hurt by his defense in the 3rd inning when he allowed two of the three runs. With a runner on 1st and nobody out Jorge Posada allowed a past ball allowing the runner to move to 2nd. Joe Inglett then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Posada threw the ball over Wilson Betemit's head at first, so instead of a runner on 3rd with 1 out, it was 1st and 3rd with nobody out. After telling the media that he was a catcher last night, he certainly didn't look like one tonight.Later in the inning with 1st and 3rd and 1 out, Joba got a ground ball, but Wilson Betemit mishandled a ball that could have been an inning-ending double-play, but instead turned into a force out.Billy Traber replaced Joba and did not pitch well. Rangers,Bullpen shut down Bombers 3-2
    2008-07-01 14:56:00
As you can see, the Yankees dropped a second straight to the Rangers, this time by the score of 3 to 2. They once again blew an opportunity to gain ground on the Red Sox who lost again tonight, and again the Rays gain a game, there lead is now up to 7.5 games.ON THE MOUND:Joba Chamberlain started for the Yankees, and was not his normal self. He battled through four innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 4 and striking out 6. He had no command of any of his pitches tonight, and was in trouble from beginning to end.Dan Giese relieved Chamberlain in the 5th and pitched a scoreless inning.Coming off a somewhat shaky outing in his MLB debut at Shea on Sunday, David Robertson was impressive in two scoreless innings tonight. He had some control issues and walked 2, but didn't allow a hit, and struck out 3.Jose Veras pitched a scoreless 8th. He didn't have his best command, but did the job. With the game tied in the 9th the Yankees called on Mariano Rivera, who has been perfect in save sit

MI5 fears jihadis will use mentally ill as suicide bombers
    2008-05-25 12:54:00
Islamic terrorists may be targeting mentally disturbed or disabled people in Britain in a bid to form a new “brigade” of home-grown suicide bombers, security officials fear.MI5 and police say the case of Nicky Reilly, who is being held over a nailbomb attack last week in Exeter, may indicate a new strategy of targeting vulnerable people with mental health problems to carry out attacks.A counterterrorism official said MI5 was investigating the extent to which Reilly had been manipulated by a “charismatic” Al-Qaeda recruiter. Rising Female Bombers in Iraq: An Alarming Trend
    2008-04-22 20:22:35
The rise of female bombers in Iraq is now garnering greater media attention. The wow-factor of Muslim women strapping on the bomb is important today because these women pose a security threat to U.S. coalition forces in Iraq as well as Iraqi civilians and security forces. This dangerous trend should not surprise us. The latest television report of this phenomenon appeared tonight on FOX News with Britt Hume's Special Report at 6pm and will air again at 10pm. While an alarming trend, it is worth noting...(read more)

Female Suicide Bombers in Iraq: Why the Trend Continues
    2008-03-25 11:56:21
As the war in Iraq continues, more Iraqi women will be ready to make the ultimate sacrifice: to use their bodies as human shields. The U.S. Government and other experts are asking: Why now? Why has there been a spike in attacks in Iraq committed by women? More importantly, how will the new role of women as suicide bombers change the nature of this conflict? Since March 2003, when the war began, Iraqi women’s participation in suicide terrorism has increased by nearly 30%. This year, alone, there...(read more)

    The Bombers Who Weren't
    2008-03-24 10:30:24
I had a piece in the Washington Post's Outlook section on Sunday on terrorist drop-outs. In the piece, I argue that with all of the increased focus on analyzing the radicalization process, it's just as important to improve our understanding of those who abandon terrorist organizations. Here is an excerpt: On Dec. 10, 2001, after completing his al-Qaeda training in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Sajid Badat returned home to Britain. Badat, a 22-year-old Muslim born in Gloucester, had an associate, a gangly...(read more)

NEFA Report: An Analysis of Spain's January's Suicide Bombers Case
    2008-02-22 13:58:37
The NEFA Foundation has published an paper looking at the January indictment of nine Pakistani and one Indian citizen for allegedly planning terrorist attacks near Barcelona, Spain. The paper looks at the case in the context of the rise in Spain of the threat of radical Islamist terrorist attacks. Spain, al Andalus in Islamist world view, is rightfully part of the Islamic word and therefore attacks there justified as "defensive jihad" to recoup Muslim land, rather than offensive jihad, a much more...(read more)

Prosthetic Bellies: Fake Pregnancy Suicide Bombers
    2008-02-21 10:33:00
Now that we've already seen some of the lows that Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations will sink to, (such as recruiting kids and down syndrome afflicted persons,) something like this should actually be expected. The Dept. of Homeland Security is issuing a warning to local law enforcement departments to be aware of Prosthetic "bellies" that mimic a pregnancy. It looks like this is actually a week old now, but it's the first I myself have heard of it. I received info on this through an e-letter from the American Congress for Truth. It provides a link to LiveLeak.com which hosts the video and article. The video, which is a CBS 2 News report, features statements from security experts, the FBI and the warning from the DHS about the topic. And like my previous article, the desperation of these terrorist groups is showing. Read here about the Kiddie Jihad. The report also mentions as in a sideline, that these groups may also be seeking out what can best be described as "Americanized looki

New U.S. Report on Female Bombers Unexceptional
    2008-02-17 18:37:00
This month’s report by two U.S. government agencies, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, warning United States law enforcement agents of female terrorists inside the United States is both dated and exaggerated. Years ago, when I was a security analyst in the U.S. government, I first warned the U.S. President and other policymakers of the rising threat by female terrorists. The intelligence assessment I drafted, now a publicly available article called...(read more)

"Al-Qaida's MySpace": How Suicide Bombers Are Being Recruited Online
    2008-01-17 09:56:01
This morning, the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point released the second issue of its Sentinel journal, including my new piece on "Al-Qaida's MySpace"--which tracks a growing number of case studies in which users on extremist Internet forums such as Al-Ekhlaas have been vanishing off the forums, only to suddenly re-appear later as suicide bombers in the service of Al-Qaida in Iraq . The report includes both testimonials gathered from the forums themselves, and never-before-seen evidence uncovered...(read more)

Russian Bombers Visit Guam; Smiles Exchanged
    2007-08-09 19:43:00
The BBC is reporting that two Tu-95 turboprops made a 13-hour flight to Guam earlier this week, home to a large U.S. military base, for a brief visit. Russian general Pavel Androsov offered the following statement, regarding the bomber sojourn: "It has always been the tradition of our long-range aviation to fly far into the ocean, to meet [US] aircraft carriers and greet [US pilots] visually,"

Russia's response: Bombers intercepted in British airspace
    2007-07-18 11:28:12
Russia may be preparing a very unusual response to the British actions to expel Russian diplomats and tighten visa regulations amid the Litvinenko affair and Lugovoi extradition. As The Times reported today, apparently the British airforce was ready to intercept two Russian bombers on Tuesday who were very close to breaching British airspace. Two Tu95 “Bear” bombers were dispatched from their base on the Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle and headed towards British airspace. Russian military aircraft based near the northern port city of Murmansk fly patrols off the Norwegian coast regularly, but the RAF said that it was highly unusual for them to stray as far south as Scotland. Two Tornado fighters, part of the RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert, took off from RAF Leeming, in Yorkshire, to confront the Russian aircraft, after they were shadowed by two F16s from the Royal Norwegian Air Force, The Times has learnt. “The Russians turned back before they reached British airspace,” an RAF spokesman said. The newspaper was quick to say there was no evidence to suggest the incident was related to the chilling of relations which has accelerated over the past week, but it is a damn big coincidence. The Russian airforce chief colonel-general Zelin denied reports of Russian long-range bombers approaching close to or breaching foreign airspace yet confirmed that bombing divisions were performing the usual exercises to train the crews for long-range operations.General Zelin also found the RAF statements of Russian planes changing their course after seeing RAF planes as nonsense, as such operations are planned several months in advance and have nothing to do with politics.According to Russian daily Vzglyad this was the second such incident since the end of the Cold War; the first occurred this spring, which downplays the coincidence aspect of the situation. The Tu-95 long-range bomber is a very old airplane and has been in service in the Russian air force for over 50 years no

Two UK terror bombers enquired into US jobs
    2007-07-06 20:53:00
Customwire.AP.orgLONDON (AP)Two suspects in the failed car bombings in Britain made inquiries about working in the United States, the FBI said Friday. Mohammed Asha and another suspect had contacted the Philadelphia-based Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, as first reported in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Asha, a Jordanian physician of Palestinian heritage, contacted the agency within the last year, but apparently did not take the test for foreign medical school graduates.I wonder which US questions were so off-putting to a terroristthat were not contained in NHS vetting.1) Are you a total moron? Yes2) Can you pull the wool over Pat Hewitt’s eyes? Suspected al-Qaida bombers toppled the towering minarets of Samarra's revered Shiite shrine
    2007-06-14 17:50:00
The attack stoked fears of an upsurge in intra-Muslim violence. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government rushed to contain Shiite wrath against Sunnis, clamping a curfew on Baghdad and asking for U.S. troop reinforcements in Samarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of here, and for a heightened U.S. military alert in the capital. But sketchy reports of sectarian strife began to come in: Police told of at least four Sunni mosques in Baghdad and south of here attacked by arsonists and bombers, and of a smaller Shiite shrine bombed north of here. Gearing Up For The Bronx Bombers, Part II
    2007-05-08 22:04:20
The Rangers open up a big three game series against the New York Yankees tonight in the Bronx, as they begin playing a string of sixteen consecutive games. With Texas headed back to Arlington to face Anaheim for four games starting Friday, this is really a make-it-or-break-it stretch for the Rangers. That being said, here’s a few Rangers notes floating around before tonight’s first pitch: Mike Wood will make the start tonight against Andy Pettitte. Robinson Tejeda was originally scheduled to make the start, but he’ll go on Wednesday instead to give his sore left hamstring and right elbow an extra day of rest. Pitching coach Mark Connor compares Wood to the 2007 version of John Wasdin - a versatile guy who can pitch in relief or make emergency starts. Eric Gagne has been activated from the disabled list, and will be available for tonight’s game. Wes Littleton has been optioned back to Oklahoma City. I’d rather see Willie Eyre sent packing, but Eyre seems t
