    Edwards bookstore to close
    2008-05-05 13:38:40
The news is not entirely unexpected, but Edwards Bookstore in Tower Square, Springfield, will be closing on May 16. The last of the area's independent bookstores will be gone, victim of the mega-bookstores like Barnes & Noble and online sellers like Amazon.com.I wonder, sometimes, what my life would have been like without Springfield bookstores. All through high school, I would spend at least three late afternoons a week in Johnson's Secondhand Bookstore, browsing for hours and getting great bargains for a dime. So many of my lifelong interests were shaped sitting on a stool in those narrow isles-- religion, philosophy, history, science, nature-- and, as I think about it, from books ten to sixty years old! I memorized all the bones in the human body from a 1910 anatomy textbook, don't ask me why. Sometimes I'd take my find of the day and go next door to Johnson's Tea Room (which no one seems to remember) for tea and bread pudding. When, at seventeen, I decided to run away from

Story submitted by Drake Tailspin. The other day while I was working in the music department at a large book store, chatting with the cashwrap manager, a woman walked up to us. Thinking she might need my musical expertise, I asked her if she could be helped. This is how the conversation went: Me: Hi, What [...]

Mummified Michael Jackson Spotted At Bookstore
    2007-12-17 13:25:35
You know how I feel about doing stories covering so and so walking around doing absolutely nothing, but this morning there’s images floating around of what appears to be Michael Jackson walking around in a bookstore with an upside down nose and a face covered with little post it notes. TMZ is calling them [...]

Gaza: Christian Bookstore Owner Was Tortured Before His Death
    2007-10-16 20:58:00
The owner of a Christian bookstore in the Gaza Strip who was found dead this weekend was publicly beaten by Islamic gunmen accusing him of spreading Christianity, witnesses and Palestinian Arab security officials said. The body of Rami Ayyad, director of Gaza's only Christian bookstore, was found Sunday riddled with gunshot and stab wounds. He had been abducted the night before as he closed his shop, a local Christian group said.Gaza-based Islamic groups had accused Ayyad, a Baptist, of engaging in missionary activity. His bookstore was firebombed in April, and since then Ayyad had told relatives he was receiving death threats from Islamists.Witnesses and security officials associated with Hamas's so-called Executive Force told The New York Sun that Ayyad was publicly beaten a few blocks from his store before being shot to death. Hamas security sources said Ayyad's body showed signs of torture.

    Marketing Simulation #5: Bookstore
    2007-08-16 03:48:41
The offline book market has been in decline since a decade ago because of the online book market. This doesn't necessarily mean that starting a bookstore business is bad business but that you need a better strategy than the average bookstore so you can be among the last few that will survive in the market, because the less competitors are in the market the better it is for the ones remaining. Being in a declining industry also means not many will dare to adventure in it. So how do you stay in the business then? The answer is by focusing and making sure you dominate one category. Also offering what online bookstores can't, maybe not such small prices but you can offer great customer service! So don't offer every type of book, just focus on one category like business books and get thousands of them if you can. If some other bookstore still can have more business books than you have than focus even more and offer say marketing books. Make sure you dominate the category you're in and
