    2008-08-26 03:57:00
It's time for the Boston Red Sox to make their last ever visit to the House That Ruth Built, Yankee Stadium. They have an upcoming three game set with the pinstripers in the Bronx, and that's it! The final three games of the season series will be at Fenway Park. That trio of games will be the final ones of the regular season. New York has to sweep the Sox to get back in the wild card hunt. They are currently five games behind Boston with a little more than thirty to play. Home Runs Power Red Sox Victory...Boston Red Sox 6 Toronto Blue Jays 5
    2008-08-25 04:12:00
This was an exciting game! Sunday afternoon in Toronto, the Red Sox and the Blue Jays played the final game of their three game set, and Boston emerged victorious by a score of 6-5. Five of their runs came from the long ball, with Pedy Pedroia hitting a crucial three run bomb to left in the third inning off a neck high pitch from starter AJ Burnett. They scored four runs that inning, but the Blue Jays went ahead 5-4 after six. It was time for some heroics, as this game was viewed as a big one by every Sox player. And Coco Crisp delivered in the seventh with a solo home run to tie that all important score. It stayed tied as the beleagered Boston bullpen came through with five scoreless innings. Now that's priceless! And then came the eleventh, and Jed Lowrie promptly hit the game winning home run to right center. Little Manny Delcarmen relieved Jonathon Papelbon, who had breezed through the ninth and tenth innings, needing only 16 pitches. And Manny came through and the Red Sox, battere

PAPI And DAISUKE To The Rescue...Boston Red Sox 6 White Sox 2
    2008-08-10 04:59:00
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched a strong eight innings Saturday evening in Chicago as the Red Sox defeated the Pale Hose by a score of 6-2. The double play ball was a good friend indeed, as all three of his walks came to the leadoff batter. He allowed just one run and four hits while walking three. He whiffed four Chicago batters. Mike Timlin pitched the ninth and secured the victory, giving up a meaningless run. Jose Contreras was hurt in the first inning while scampering to first base. He was late, but what made matters worse was this...after racing to the bag, he grabbed what looked like his ankle and rolled to the ground in evident agony. No one likes to see something like that. A ruptured left achilles' tendon was the doctor's verdict, and I know firsthand how painful that can be. He is out for the rest of the season. Too bad...he's a nice guy.On the bright side, our Big Papi David Ortiz broke out of his hitting funk with three base hits, one a booming double with the bases loaded that

The Boston Red Sox Have 47 Games To Go
    2008-08-08 04:02:00
Good morning on this still dark Friday AM, the day the Olympic Games begin in China. The opening ceremonies begin in about three hours, but they'll be shown on NBC tonight in primetime at 7:30 pm EDT. Why not a live broadcast?? I'll tell you...so that NBC can get the maximum viewership possible. But I'm going to talk baseball. Ok with you? I hope so.The AL East first place Tampa Bay Rays lost to Seattle last night on the left coast, so the Red Sox crept a little closer to them in the standings. And with 47 games to go for the Sox, here are the home/away ratios for the three top teams in the AL East. Boston has, as I said, 47 games left in the 2008 regular season, and 25 of them are at Friendly Fenway. The Rays have only 19 home games left...they have 48 games to play, and maybe this current west coast swing will enable the Red Sox to take over first place. The Rays away record is 23-29, so they will be vulnerable at the right time. The Sox are playing the tough Chicago White Sox, with

A Vintage Beckett At Exactly The Right Time...Boston Red Sox 8 KC Royals 2
    2008-08-06 04:36:00
Josh Beckett returned to his 2007 form as he beat the KC Royals 8-2 He was lifted by Tito Francona with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning after throwing 90 pitches. He allowed those 2 runs on just 4 base hits and 2 walks while striking out a healthy 7 Royals batters. Royals DH Jose Guillen this to say about him..."He looked great," Jose Guillen said of Beckett. "His ball moved all over the place. Inside and out. He looked like the playoff Beckett."Peter here, and his pitches WERE darting and dancing in and out and up and down all night, which was a great thing to see. If he can hold onto this type of stuff for the remainder of this season and into and through the postseason, Boston's chances of making it to that postseason would be greatly enhanced. With Becks and Lester leading the staff, the Red Sox should do quite well, especially scoring 8 runs as they did last night. But last night, three runs would have been enough. Hey, 8 is just fine with me, thank you very much. Timlin

Red Sox Road Woes Continue ...Kansas City Royals 4 Boston Red Sox 3...PAPI'S WRIST? Click On The Title Of My Post
    2008-08-05 04:40:00
Monday night in Kansas City, the Boston Red Sox were beaten by the Kansas City Royals, continuing a seemingly unending string of road calamities. Clay Buchholz was undone by the end of the third inning. After giving up a first inning home run to Alex Gordon, he then gave up three more runs in the third on three singles, two walks and a hit batter. That was all the scoring for the Royals, but it was enough to down the visiters. Sox manager Tito Francona had this to say after the game concluded..."He was pitching with such confidence, his body language, he was working quicker, he was coming off the mound with some aggression," manager Terry Francona said of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. "But we got into that bind in that one inning. There were a lot of baserunners, and he was trying to be perfect. Just need to limit the damage. He's growing. We talked about when he came back that it's still a work in progress, and we acknowledged that. But I do like the way he went back out and h

Jon Lester, The True 2008 Boston Red Sox ACE...Boston 12 Oakland 2
    2008-08-03 04:23:00
Jon Lester, on the rebound trail from a successful and complete recovery from cancer, pitched seven strong innings to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 12-2 victory over the light-hitting A's of Oakland. After a tough 2 run first inning and a visit from pitching coach John Farrell, Lester settled down wonderfully and improved his career record to 13-0 in his 13 starts when he has pitched seven innings or more. Not bad, Jon. Right now I consider him the true ace of the pitching staff. Overall, he is 10-3 with a sparkling 3.14 ERA. The A's almost had Lester on the ropes in the first inning, an inning that he gave up four hits and two runs. But it was "shut 'em up and shut 'em down" time after that, and he proved he was up to the task, only surrendering three hits the rest of the way. Masterson pitched a clean 8th and Chris Smith did the same thing in the 9th and final frame. Lester had this to say after the festivities..."I had a rough first inning and guys come out and swing the bat really

PUNCHLESS And 'PENLESS Boston Red Sox Humbled By NY Yankees 10-3
    2008-07-27 04:03:00
This one became really ugly really fast. Saturday afternoon's Fenway Park game between the Boston Red Sox and the NY Yankees started out well enough with Boston having Yankee starter Andy Pettitte on the ropes. They scored two runs that first frame, but except for a meaningless run in the sixth inning, that would be it for the home club. They finished with a total of six hits, and six hits will not win many games the rest of the year. The final score was 10-3 Pinstripes, as Tim Wakefield, with a little help (the wrong kind of help) from his bullpen, gave up 6 runs in just 5 1/3 innings, allowing 8 hits while striking out 3 and walking 4. The help from the bullpen came in the sixth inning. Justin Masterson faced 3 batters and gave up base hits to each one of 'em. By then, of course, the game was essentially over. Face it, Peter (that's me), it WAS over! Javy Lopez followed Masterson and pitched well, one of two pitchers from the 'pen who did. He was followed by Craig Hansen, who is more

New York Yankees At Boston Red Sox...Games 10, 11, 12...***THE RETURN OF BIG PAPI***
    2008-07-25 04:46:00
Fenway Park will be in a festive and slightly combative mood Friday night as the Yankees, who are only three games in back of Boston and Tampa Bay, invade the old ballpark that is the home of the world champion Boston Red Sox. And the Red Sox will have a familiar bat in the lineup for the first time in what seems like ages. His name is David Ortiz, but we know him better as Big Papi. OUR Big Papi. What an ovation he'll get when he strides to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. In fact, I'll be standing too, hands banging together with a huge smile on my face! His teammate, JD Drew, had this to say about Big Papi's return...“It’s like getting a huge trade at the deadline,” Drew said. “It’s David Ortiz. You’re not going to take that for granted for sure.”“We’re in a fighting position without one of the two biggest pieces of the lineup,” he said. The timing couldn't be any better for a big bat and a huge personality to return for the rest of the season and (hop

Boston Red Sox In Twelve For The Sweep...Boston 6 Seattle 3
    2008-07-24 04:03:00
Ah yes, Safeco Field in Seattle, home of the last place Seattle Pilots.....err..Mariners. It's the place where teams come in and win, and that modus operandi worked well for the Boston Red Sox Thursday afternoon as they defeated the home club by a score of 6-3. It took them twelve innings to do it, but do it they did. A 3-3 left coast trip is a good one, especially after losing the first three to the Angels. Clay Buchholz started and was able to go five and one third innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven...this was his best outing since he returned to the rotation but it was not enough to earn a win. He's a work in progress and should improve with each and every start. The bullpen took over with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and held Seattle scoreless for the remaining six and two thirds frames. The performance of Justin Masterson was masterful, and it was his first appearance in his new role as a mid to long reliever, although I'm

Daisuke Matsuzaka Overpowering For Boston...Red Sox 4 Mariners 2
    2008-07-23 04:11:00
Tuesday night in Seattle was a night that Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka flat-out shined. The Red Sox defeated the Mariners by a score of 4-2 on the strength of seven and one third five hit, two run innings from their Japanese starter. He only allowed three bases on balls, which is good for him, and sixty one of his ninety nine pitches were strikes. He was great, and if he keeps pitching with this form and this kind of control, he'd be a lock to win twenty games. With the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays' loss, the world champions climbed to within one half game of that perplexingly good ball club, and for a while, it looked like Daisuke would do the undoable (at least for him)...and that is pitch a complete game. Here's what he and manager Tito Francona had to say after the game, Boston's second victory in a row after three straight losses to the AL West leaders, the LA Angels..."If I couldn't throw a complete game today I don't know when I'm going to do it," Matsuzaka said through an

Jon Lester Is Becoming The Boston Red Sox STOPPER...Boston 4 Seattle 0
    2008-07-22 03:35:00
John Lester spun another gem Monday night in Seattle as he and his team beat the host Seattle Mariners 4-0. Lester was able to go 7 1/3 innings, giving up zero runs and eight hits while striking out 6. He walked absolutely no one. It was another tremendous start in this, his breakout season of 2008. He is close to becoming the stopper of the club, and something like that couldn't happen to a nicer and more courageous person. Great job, Jon! Jonathon Papelbon took care of the last five outs of the game, giving up nothing to the last place Mariners. Here's what Mr. Lester and his manager had to say after his performance in Seattle, very near his hometown..."Unlike the last couple times here, I didn't have the distractions or anything," Lester said. "It's nice to come back home and pitch halfway decent," he said."I looked up in the fifth or sixth inning and he'd thrown only 11 balls," Francona said. "Those were quality pitches, too. That was terrific. You hope when you give a guy rest, yo

California Sweeping, On Such A Lovely Day...LA Angels 5 Boston Red Sox 3
    2008-07-21 04:18:00
The Boston Red Sox were sent packing by the LA Angels, heading north to Seattle after being swept by the home team yesterday. The Angels scored three in the eighth inning to not only tie the score but go up by two runs. It was something Boston could not overcome, and they ended up losing by a score of 5-3, their third straight loss to the Halos. Tim Wakefield pitched wonderfully yet again for seven innings, but back to back doubles off him in the eighth tied the score. It was then that Manny Delcarmen entered. Little Manny, who said his changup while warming up in the bullpen was superb, left one of those change of speed offerings out over the plate. That scored two, making it 5-3 Halos. LA closer Francisco Hernandez, the best in all of baseball (by far, stat-wise) sealed the deal and the sweep with a one-two-three scoreless ninth. It was the Angels' first three game sweep of the Sox in seven years. My goodness!"It seems like we never got a combination of good at-bats like they did," s

AL Wins The 2008 All Star Game...**Manny Ramirez On His Future Career Possibilities With Or Without The Boston Red Sox**
    2008-07-16 04:20:00
The most important statistic of the 2008 Baseball All Star Game was its length...four hours and fifty minutes, lasting well into the early morning. 453 pitches. Wow. The American League defeated the National League by a score of 4-3, their eleventh win of the last twelve All Star fests. There was a memorable tie within that span. Jonathon Papelbon pitched the eighth inning and gave up a very unearned run, but the game continued on and on and on and.....I could keep going, but you get the point. JD Drew, on the strength of his seventh inning two run tater, was named the MVP of the game, and deservedly so. Manny, Youk and Peds were hitless. OK, enough about that. Here's something more important for those of us who love the Boston Red Sox.The subject is the Sox leftfielder, the beloved (MOST of the time) Manny Ramirez. He was in the Yankee (gulp!) clubhouse before the game and had a sitdown with the Boston Herald's Rob Bradford. Here's part of what he had to say when asked about his futu

    2008-07-04 04:07:00
The Boston Red Sox soundly defeated the reeling New York Yankees Thursday night at the Stadium by a score of 7-0. Jon Lester was superb with every aspect of his pitching and spun his second complete game, his first since his no hitter. Manager Terry "Tito" Francona had this to say..."He used his two-seamer, his cutter, his four-seamer, got a lot of first-pitch strikes, got some double plays," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He really looked like a 6-foot-5 major league left-hander."And here is his wonderful pitching line... IP H R ER BB K HR Season ERA J. With 11 hits, they were able to score six runs more than they needed, but I like 7. It's a nice crooked number. The loss prompted Yankee manager Joe Girardi to call a post-game team meeting, and after a contentious war of words

SWEPT AWAY, FAR FAR AWAY...Tampa Bay Rays 7 Boston Red Sox 6
    2008-07-03 04:09:00
The Boston Red Sox seemed to be in good shape after six innings Wednesday night in Tampa Bay. They were ahead by a score of 4-1 and needed just five or six outs to get to "Papelbon time." But two things, two people, actually, stood between them and a salvaging victory. They were Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen. They imploded completely, with neither recording a single out. Six runs later, the score was 7-4 and the game was out of reach. Boston added single runs in the eighth and ninth, but it was too little, too late. What had seemed to be a certain victory ended up to be a series sweep win for the first place Rays.Daisuke Matsuzaka started for the Sox and had immense trouble finding the strike zone in the first two innings. He clearly has to do something about that horrid control. He has great stuff on all his pitches but that means nothing when you walk five opposing hitters. He threw 101 pitches in that short span and handed the ball over to Hideki Okajima for the sixth. Okie was d

Punchless Red Sox Beaten Again...Tampa Bay Rays 3 Boston Red Sox 1
    2008-07-02 04:38:00
For the seventh straight start, Timmy Wakefield pitched at least seven innings and allowed fewer than three earned runs. Yet the Boston Red Sox were again without the timely hits and lost to the first place Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 3-1. His ERA over that span is a nifty 1.98, but because of a lack of run support, his record is 2-3. Unfathomable. Two wild pitches were a part of his undoing, as well as a walk and an Alex Cora error. But when a team scores only one run on six hits, which was the same number of hits the Rays banged out, there is NO room for error. Here's what Tim had to say after absorbing his sixth loss...“I’m just in a really bad spot, I guess,” Wakefield said. “My job is to go out there and give us quality starts and innings and keep us in the game as long as possible, and I’ve been fortunate enough to do that. . . . We put runs on the board in Houston. It’s just a matter of firing on all cylinders right now. These guys (the Rays) aren’t like they used

The Boston Red Sox At The Halfway Point
    2008-06-27 04:12:00
The Boston Red Sox are about to begin a 10 game road trip in three cities. They start tonight (Friday) in Houston for three weekend games, go to Tampa Bay for three, which should be very interesting, and end up in the city that never sleeps to play the Yankees for four. The Yankee rotation is tattered and torn, bent, folded and stapled, so I hope the Sox can take advantage of that. But one game at a time, and tonight, all eyes will be on Daisuke Matsuzaka, who will be making his second start after his injury timeout. I'm sure you remember the disaster that was his last start, and I really hope he can put together six or seven good innings. Should he do so, the bullpen is rested and ready to take over for the final three. Last year at this time, the Red Sox had a record of 50-31 with a lead of 10 1/2 games in the AL East. This year, at least right now, their lead is a slim 1/2 game, with the LAST place team 10 1/2 games back. But Boston's record is only one game worse, standing right no

The Boston Red Sox To Honor The World Champion Boston Celtics
    2008-06-20 04:40:00
By now on this Friday morning, you all know that the Boston Celtics won the NBA championship by humiliating the LA Lakers. Since the turn of the century, Boston has six world titles among the four major sports (baseball, football, hockey and basketball). No other city can make the same claim, and we here in New England and all of Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International should be proud. I know I sure am. It's only the fourth time an NBA team won it all in the same city as the previous World Series champions. That's something very special. And tonight, before the game with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Sox will honor the "Green Team" with a pre-game ceremony that will be attended by all the Celtics. And that's just great. Here are some thoughts from Kevin Youkilis and his manager, Terry Francona..."I think in this city right now, there's a certain air of confidence you have to have to play in this city and I think that the big thing is, the Celtics have that," Francona said. "It's not ea

A Second Chance Win For Boston...Red Sox 6 Reds 4...HAPPY FATHER'S DAY...GO CELTICS! BEAT LA!!
    2008-06-15 04:32:00
The bottom of the ninth inning started hopeful and bright. And why not? Jonathon Papelbon was on the mound and the good guys, the Boston Red Sox, were ahead by a score of 4-3. One out, two outs, absolutely nobody on for the Reds. And then...then, DISASTER as Encarnation jerked a fastball into the stands to tie the game. Possible jubulation instantly turned to complete and utter despair. So extra innings were upon us, and I knew that even if Boston was able to score in the top of the tenth, Paps would not be pitching. OUCH! Back to back home runs by Kevin Youkilis, playing in front of SO many hometown fans, and Coco Crisp suddenly made that mournful mood joyful yet again. 6-4 Sox, and after a knock on the bathroom door, Craig Hansen started warming up in the bullpen. His job? Nail down this road win. One pitch, one out. And then two. And then a single put the tying run at the plate. And a walk. GULP! Two outs. Hansen was gunning for his first major league save, and he did it! Final sco

Seattle Knuckles Under To Wakefield and Boston...Red Sox 11 Mariners 3
    2008-06-08 04:59:00
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield led his Boston Red Sox team to a resounding 11-3 stomping of the Seattle Mariners, and he was flat out brilliant. At one point he retired 12 Mariners in a row. He allowed five hits, but only three of them were longer than 25 feet. Wakes said he was staying back longer during his delivery, and that helps his control as his knuckleballs dart and zoom and dance THROUGH the strike zone. One of his strikeouts victims was Kenji Johjima, and the pitch was eerily reminicent of the famous "eephus" pitch, a pitch thrown so slowly it almost looks like a slo-mo instant reply. The pitch was beautifully slow and the whiff was real. Wakes went seven innings, and the bullpen polished off the west coasters. Craig Hansen continued to show a biting slider and a good fastball and breezed through the eighth. Jonathon Papelbon, summoned to pitch the ninth just to give him some work, allowed one run during a 23 pitch ninth. And then, suddenly, it was over and almost time to watch

Felix Hernandez Shuts Down Boston Red Sox Offense...Seattle 8 Boston 0
    2008-06-07 04:21:00
Chalk up Friday night's Boston Red Sox loss to the Seattle Mariners, an 8-0 whitewashing, to superior pitching, and that pitching was authored by Felix Hernandez, who ALWAYS pitches well at Fenway Park. Last night, he went six innings and gave up only six hits. The Mariners' bullpen took over from there and made that shutout official. Here's what he, his manager and one of his opponents had to say after the game...“Felix stepped up and has been pretty good in Fenway Park,” Mariners manager John McLaren said.“It was important for me, important for the team. I was trying to keep the lead,” said Hernandez, who won for the second time in as many starts after going seven starts without a win. "He did a great job of keeping us off base, and really not letting us get anything together and when we did have something going, he made some pitches when he had to,” Casey said.Peter here. The contest to win one of the two copies of the 6 DVD set from A&E Home Video that chronicles six of the greatest games ever played at Fenway Park as voted by the fans is on! The discs are in my hot hands, and I had a chance to savor a generous helping of each disc. For the full details of which games are included and a list of the bonus features, simply scroll down two posts and you'll find everything you'd want to know. Ok, here goes...The six DVDs are housed in a beautiful metallic silver-colored hard plastic box with easy access to the goodies inside. There are no security stickers to peel off at your own risk. Each disc has one game on it, the earliest being from that magic year of 1967, when Yaz had the year of all years. The date of the game? September 30, 1967, when the Sox were in the thick of an improbable pennant race and needed something Yaz-special. Boy, did they get it! The last disc is also the mo

Bedard Bests Wakefield, Red Sox...Seattle 1 Boston 0...RED SOX DVD SET DETAILS
    2008-05-29 04:37:00
The Boston Red Sox hitting woes continued Wednesday night at Safeco Field in Seattle as the Erik Bedard fueled Seattle Mariners defeated the hitless wonders, that baseball team from Boston, by a score of 1-0. The Sox collected two hits, if you want me to be precise, but two hits were clearly not enough. And all this came on a night when the "old man," knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, spun an 8 inning beauty, allowing only five base hits and one run while walking none. His only mistake was a home run ball to Yuniesky Betancourt in the third inning. Wakes had this to say after the stinging road defeat...“I made some adjustments from my last start and they paid off, but unfortunately, I came out on the short end of the stick,” Wakefield said."Manny Ramirez, looking for career home run #500, went 1-3 with a single, which was one of the two Red Sox hits in the game. Clearly the Red Sox hitting has taken a turn southward, WAY southward (at this rate, they'll end up in Cuba!), but after four

Colon Wins Again. It's Safe At Safeco For Boston...Red Sox 5 Mariners 3
    2008-05-27 04:32:00
"Is it safe?" That's the question Sir Lawrence Olivier asked Dustin Hoffman in the thrilling movie MARATHON MAN. Rent it!! Please!!! The late, great Roy Scheider costars with Olivier and Hoffman. And the answer, at least for the Boston Red Sox, is a resoundingly loud YES! They were treated as if THEY were the home team in a thrilling comeback 5-3 victory. They scored four runs in the eighth inning to make a winner of Bartolo Colon. who is 2-0 and is proving himself to be just what the baseball doctor ordered. He was able to go seven strong, giving up only one lonely run on five measly hits. He walked one and struck out four and was in command from his first pitch to his last. And remember this, my friends, he's only going to get better. I'll say it again...HE'S ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER! What an acquisition by Theo & company!!The Sox were tied with Seattle 1-1 after seven innings before they made something happen against Felix Hernandez, who pitched so well. They scored four runs in the

    A Duchscherer Gem For Oakland...Oakland A's 3 Boston Red Sox 0
    2008-05-25 03:55:00
Justin Duchscherer joked before the game that he was going to "pull a Lester" and pitch a no hitter. And he came darn close to doing it. A Big Papi David Ortiz one out single in the seventh inning and a sixth inning hit batter ('Tek) were the only blemishes in his eight innings of stellar work. This is what Red Sox manager Terry Francona and opposing pitcher and tough-luck loser Josh Beckett had to say after the game...“He commanded every pitch he threw tonight,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “His command was phenomenal. He did not throw one pitch without a purpose. He kept us off balance. Other than David’s hit and his line drive and Youk’s line drive, we couldn’t do anything.”“It was unfortunate someone had to lose it,” Beckett said. “We don’t have many games like this, period. For what this offense does on a consistent basis, no one has a right to complain about run support.”Peter here, and I ain't complaining about ANYTHING! Josh pitched more than we

A Wonderful Looking Boston Red Sox DVD Set...
    2008-05-21 08:12:00
Hello on Wednesday morning yet again. This is Peter, and soon I will have a treat for my readers. A&E Home Video has been kind enough to send me a copy of a wonderful sounding Boston Red Sox DVD set called THE ESSENTIAL GAMES OF FENWAY PARK, and two extra sets to give away. I haven't received them yet because I just this hour heard back from A&E Home Video's Suzanne. But when you read what the DVDs are comprised of, I think you'll look forward with anticipation for something like this to make a rainy day with suddenly no Sox game, boredom and hunger for popcorn overriding everything, a great day anyways. I'll be back after you read this, with amazement, as I did. REMEMBER, the set is more than 16 hours running time!!! 16 hours of joy...**************This six-game, 6-DVD collection spans five decades of promise, heart-ache and jubilation, and salutes the legends and definitive moments etched in Red Sox history. The Bats Are Back In Town! YES!! Boston Red Sox 12 Toronto Blue Jays 4
    2008-05-04 04:26:00
Peter here on a quiet Sunday morning, early style. Last night at Fenway Park, the Boston lumber again made its presence known in a big way as the home club banged out fifteen (!!) hits and scored twelve runs in a 12-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Josh Beckett was the recipient of the offensive output and was able to easily win the game. He went eight strong innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out five. And so the Red Sox strong starting pitching continues to shine brightly and unrelentlessly, and as I said earlier in the week, when the bats stir to life, this club will win many games. They are in first place in the American League East right now, with Jon Lester, coming off the best start of his young career, ready to face Scott Kazmir in HIS "opening day" appearance. We have to hope he's a little rusty, a little slow and not quite ready to face a hot-hitting team. For when he is on, HE IS ON and tough to beat. But the Sox have been putting their bats o

Streaking Boston Red Sox Finish Off Four Game Sweep Of The Texas Rangers
    2008-04-22 04:14:00
The Boston Red Sox celebrated Patriot's Day in style, and with a "B-like" lineup, too. They defeated the happless Texas Rangers by a score of 8-3. The three runs were given up by the Sox bullpen, for Clay Buchholz had what might have been his breakout start, the one we were all waiting for. He went six innings, allowing five hits and ZERO runs while walking two. He also added six big strikeouts. All four of his pitches were working, and with the familiar (to him) Kevin Cash as his behind-the-plate batterymate, he was comfortable in using them all to keep Texas off balance, never knowing what would be coming next. Tito Francona had this to say about his starter..."I thought he was much more unpredictable in all counts," manager Terry Francona said after the Sox had swept the Rangers, locking up their fifth straight win and ninth in 10 games. "He was throwing all his pitches."We talk so often about establishing fastball, but with Clay, he's got four pitches that if he can throw at any ti

The Cardiac Kids Of 2008..The Boston Red Sox. MERCY!
    2008-04-21 04:13:00
Good morning on this very early Monday morning. For those of you who gave up on the Red Sox Sunday afternoon after they were down five zip, this is for you. You missed an incredible comeback by this scrappy, never-say-lose 2008 Boston team. They've come from behind to win five of their past six games, three times with a game winning home run. They never say die. Clutch first baseman Sean Casey summed it up perfectly...“I’ve been on teams that when you get down, it’s like, ‘We lost,’ ” Casey said. “With this team, it’s like, ‘No, let’s just get on base and get something happening.’ Guys don’t give up here . . . I’ve had other teams that were waiting to lose. This team is waiting to win.”Peter here. Waiting to win...I like that! The Sox scored two runs in the seventh inning to make the score 5-2. The Fenway Faithful stirred, clearly anticipating that something, maybe something big, was going to happen. And it did. They added four more runs to their total in th

The Boston Red Sox Roll On. Next Stop? NEW YORK CITY, JUST LIKE I PICTURED IT!
    2008-04-16 04:31:00
Ok, OK, I borrowed a line from Stevie Wonder's 1976 song LIVING IN THE CITY for part of the title (the part in caps). The Boston Red Sox are flat out playing good baseball. All phases of their game have improved since the first rough days of the season, and the ninth inning home run has saved them more than once lately. Take last night, for example. Jason Varitek hit a 9th inning tie-breaking solo home run, putting the Sox ahead for good. They tacked on another run in that final frame and Hideki Okajima made the victory official with a clean, two strikeout ninth. Tim Wakefield was great again, going six full and allowing only two runs on seven hits, walking four and whiffing the same number. A quality start yet again. Lopez and Delcarmen, neither sharp, followed Wakes. Aardsma finished the 8th and set the way for the Darkman's ninth. My goodness! Great job out of the 'pen. 'Tek had this to say after his winning clout...“I’ve had my fair share of appearances as a pinch-hitter over

A Rainy Win For The Boston Red Sox Over The Yankees, Beckett And Paps Style
    2008-04-13 04:25:00
It was a two time rain delay that stopped the game in its tracks in the 8th inning. The score was 4-3 Red Sox and Alex Rodriguez was waiting for the tarp to be removed. And it was a long wait indeed, just about 2 1/2 hours. Papelbon, ready to enter the game in relief of Josh Beckett, knew the game was on the line. Beckett had pitched a super solid 6 2/3 innings, and the bullpen duo of Manny Delcarmen and Hideki Okajima had stymied the Yankees up until the heavens opened and shed its tears. Only a smattering of people remained to watch the high drama to come. 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, a one run game, and one of the best relievers in all of baseball primed, stoked and just plain old READY. When finally the ump shouted "PLAY BALL," Papelbon delivered. He said this afterwards, from the Boston Globe..."I said to myself, 'This is the ballgame right here,'" Papelbon said Saturday after picking up his fourth save in four tries. "Everybody, top to bottom, worked their butts off to put us

Boston Red Sox 6 Hanshin Tigers 5
    2008-03-22 04:40:00
Big Papi David Ortiz hit a mammoth 500 plus foot home run but Clay Buchholz had another too short outing as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Hanshin Tigers by a score of 6-5. Clay "Bee" pitched 3 2/3 innings, throwing 76 pitches, 45 of them for strikes. He said this after his rather rough outing..."Overall, I thought it went pretty well. I left a couple of pitches up over the plate and that hurt," said Buchholz, who pitched a no-hitter last Sept. 1 in his second major league start. "The Tiger hitters stayed back on the ball better than I thought they might."So the Sox finally got to play a game. I worry about this topsy-turvy end of their pre-season, for they are missing out on the normal spring training schedule of games. Until yesterday, that is. They will play another exhibition game later today. All the regular season contests will be on NESN, and ESPN2 (with NESN) will screen the season opener on Tuesday morning. EARLY Tuesday morning. A&E's Boston Red Sox 2007 World Series Collector's Edition DVD Set Review
    2007-12-12 05:15:00
The UPS driver knocked on my door yesterday with a real treat! It's the A&E Red Sox 8 disc DVD Collector's Edition of the 2007 World Series. I have been able to watch parts of all the discs....to watch the whole set would take so many hours and would delay this very review. And that's something I did not want to do. Here's what the beautiful boxed set contains.....Games 5, 6 and 7, in their entirety, of the American League Championship Series between the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox, each game on their very own disc, with every fact about each game peppering the individual cases. The same treatment continues for all four games of the Red Sox-Rockies World Series. That's seven games on seven discs. Each features a stunningly crisp and clean 16 x 9 widescreen picture (I watched them on an HDTV, with a DVD player ramped up to 1080i, and they looked great! But they will look great on ANY TV and ANY DVD player...promise) and wonderful sound. And there is an eighth disc of b

Boston Red Sox win the World Series (and muggins here finally gets some sleep)
    2007-10-30 18:28:00
On Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies to win the World Series for the second time in four seasons. I had a bit of an Eastern Standard Time week, staying up to watch five consecutive Bo' Sox victories on Sunday in Game 7 of the ALCS against the Cleveland Indians, on Wednesday and Thursday for Games 1 and 2 of the World Series at Fenway, and on Saturday and Sunday, for Games 3 and 4 in Denver. Highlights included Dice-K's wind-up wiggle on the mound, Pedroia's lead-off homer in Game 1 of the World Series, Papelbon throwing out Holliday at first, Dice-K's two-run single in Game 3 (not bad for an American League pitcher), Jacoby Ellsbury's consistent on-base percentage and Gonzalez speed, Lugo plucking that one out of the air at short-stop, Kielty's pinch-hit homer in the only ball he faced in the World Series, and Mike Lowell and Youk's consistent brilliance. Big Papi and Manny of course continued to do their thing. It's a joy to watch a team reach their potential. Francona and Theo Epstein deserve a lot of credit.I was fascinated to learn of the Boston bullpen's rhythm section, which was first featured in Game 7 of the ALCS at Fenway. See the video below:I noticed it throughout the following games, particularly when Boston was at bat. Have they been doing that all season?Another great amusement was Papelbon's celebratory Riverdance. I know everyone in Boston thinks they're Irish, but this takes the solitary, unique, and, if I may so call it, recherché biscuit! But fair play to the lad: he was geein' it laldy.

THE BOSTON RED SOX ARE 2007 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
    2007-10-22 12:22:00
They did it! They did it going away!! A close 3-2 ballgame turned into an 11-2 rout, and the Boston Red Sox are 2007 American League Champions. They will face the Colorado Rockies in game one of the World Series at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Sounds sweet, huh? Daisuke Matsuzaka gutted through 5 innings, giving up single runs in the 4th and 5th innings. Tito pulled him after that 5th and in came Hideki Okajima to pitch the 6 and 7th. At the time the score was 3-2 good guys. Papelbon came on and pitched the 8th and the 9th, securing the third victory in a row for this team that loves to come back against all the odds. The batting stars are many....the team collected 15 hits in a savagely balanced attack, with Youkilis and Pedroia at the very top of the batting order collecting 3 hits apiece. Pedroia also had a pivotal 7th inning two run home run to make the score 5-2. This came a half inning after James Lofton was inexplicably held up at third on a single that hit the jutting-out portion of the wall in short leftfield. He would have scored and it would have been 3-3. But nooo. That was just one in a series of Cleveland miscues in this wonderful and wonderous series. Josh Beckett will be the game one starter Wednesday evening, as the team we love to love tries to conquer to world. And you know what? I think they will. Don't get me wrong-the Rockies are a very tough team on an incredible streak, but the Sox are running on all cylinders, hitting the ball and getting good starting pitching and superlative bullpen work.Click on the title of this post for the Hartford Courant's Jeff Jacobs and his Monday morning sports column. The Title? "These are not our fathers' Red Sox." No, they're not...they're built to win, they're a team in the truest sense of the word, and they're ALL ours! They love each other, and we love them. Congratulation guys....we love you so very much. See you Wednesday.

Cleveland Indians 13 Boston Red Sox 4
    2007-10-14 12:36:00
Every Red Sox fan seated in Fenway Park last night or those of us watching at home who are members of Red Sox Nation or Red Sox International knows that when Eric Gagne enters a baseball game in the late innings, disaster and utter mayhem follow. This proved to be the case Saturday evening, when in the 11th inning of a 6-6 game, he jogged to the mound. Terry Francona had already used Delcarmen, Timlin, Okajima and Papelbon, and was left with the dregs of the 'pen. Gagne promptly recorded the first out, but then put 2 men on with a single and an unneeded, unnecessary and idiotic walk. Tito was quick to yank him, maybe for the last time ever in a Sox uniform (we can only hope), but the seeds of ultimate destruction were already planted and taking root. Javy Lopez, who was no better, relieved Gagne and allowed a single to Trot Nixon, which scored the winning run. But he wasn't finished. He contributed a run scoring wild pitch, a walk and a single to Ryan Garko. It was 9-6, and the game was over. But Jon Lester, the LAST pitcher in the bullpen, also had something to say. He gave up a double and a 3 run homer, making the final score 13-6. Said Tito about the prospect of having to use Gagne in close situations (never!!)......."The Red Sox could hide Eric Gagne only so long. Before the game, Francona acknowledged that using Gagne in the postseason was not a simple proposition. In Game 1 Friday night, pitching with a 10-3 lead in the ninth, Gagne loaded the bases before getting the last out."It's a very difficult fine line right now," Francona said before Saturday's game. "We're in the postseason and it is a little tough. The one saving grace for me is the way he handles it. He's trying his behind off."Tito, that ain't good enough! Curt Schilling did not look good, using a fastball that didn't top 88 MPH. Maybe he IS finished as a member of the Sox after this season. He gave up 5 runs in his 4 2/3 innings and proved that his great outing against the depleted Angels was mostly because they were forced to use a patchwork lineup. But the Sox proved resilient, and went ahead 6-5, only to have Delcarmen give up the tying run. And then what followed, as described above, we are all too familiar with. So I'll have to say something I haven't had to say this entire postseason....it's time to turn the page. Consider it turned, and the day off today will help calm the soul and soothe the mind. Jake Westbrook, who should be shaky at best, will oppose Daisuke Matsuzaka Monday evening in the city that houses the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland, Ohio. I expect great things from him. He has something to prove. To ALL of us.Click on the title of this post for the Globe's Jackie MacMullen's look back at Gagne and his inadequacies. She starts her piece with one word..."OUCH." My sentiments exactly. Hey, chins up, faith intact, my Constant Readers...there's a long way to go.

Josh Beckett Completely Shuts Down The Angels.. Boston Red Sox 4 LA Angels 0
    2007-10-04 12:16:00
Josh Beckett threw a complete game four hit shutout and the Boston Red Sox beat the visiting LA Angels 4-0 in game 1 of the ALDS. An astounding 83 of his 108 pitches were strikes, and Beckett has now thrown shutouts in 3 of his past 4 playoff games. Here is what Tito and Josh himself said....."Josh went out there and executed his pitches, in my opinion, probably better than he has at any point in the season," manager Terry Francona said. "He attacked the strike zone with all his pitches. Cut his fastball at times. He pounded the strike zone with three great pitches. That was a great performance." "I had a really good sinker today," Beckett said.It was nice to see the Red Sox field their "A" lineup, with Youk batting second and Manny back in the cleanup spot. The only run the Red Sox would need came on a Kevin Youkilis home run in the first inning. Big Papi David Ortiz added a 2 run shot in the third, and Beckett took care of everything else. He was brilliant. The Red Sox take a 1-0 lead in this best of five series, and in a short series like this, the first game is a vital one. The two teams meet again on Friday, with Daisuke Matsuzaka ready to face Kelvim Escobar. Another win over the California team would be a crushing blow to them.....sounds good to me!Click on the title of this post for the Hartford Courant's Jeff Jacobs' column on the dominance that was Josh Beckett on Wednesday night, a night filled with faith for the present and hope for the future. Have a great off-day Thursday, and root for Cleveland to sit on Wang's sinkers and drive them THROUGH the infield for base hits.

**** The Boston Red Sox Are American League East Champions ****
    2007-09-29 12:06:00
The Boston Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-2 last night, and coupled with Baltimore's amazing ninth inning comeback to tie the game with three runs off Mariano Rivera and one in the 10th to win it, clinched their first American League East Division championship in 12 long years. And it was Daisuke Matsuzaka's turn to shine brightly last night. He went 8 tremendous innings for the good guys, giving up only two runs on 6 hits while striking out a commanding 8. He used a devastating breaking ball to fool many of the Twin's hitters, and mixed his fastball and slurve in at the right times. He was in charge from pitch number one, and he was a joy to watch. Jonathon Papelbon recorded his 37th save with a 6 (!) pitch ninth. When word of the Yankees' loss came roaring through the clubhouse, where many of the players had stayed and watched the O's remarkable win, the champagne started to flow, and it wasn't long after that that the players brought the celebration to the field, where many

Will The Boston Red Sox Win The AL East Championship? Right Now, Who Knows??
    2007-09-18 12:14:00
I'll answer the above question after a quick recap of last night's game in Toronto. The listless and sleepy Boston team lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1. Tim Wakefield looked better than he did in his last two starts, but he was wrecked by a large gentleman who goes by the name of Frank Thomas. Thomas hit three home runs in the game, two off Timmy. Wakes went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits. Hardly a quality start. The offense, which is still REALLY hurting by the absence of Manny and Youk, whose hand is still very swollen and whose return date is still very much unknown, has been anemic at exactly the wrong times. With 11 games to go, the hitting must improve. Bigtime. Last night there were only 5 Sox hits in the entire game. But the story belonged to Toronto's pitcher Dustin McGowen, who pitched a complete game gem. Said the Sox catcher Kevin Cash....."That's about as good a stuff as you'll see," said Cash, who caught McGowan as a member of the Blue Jays organization in 2000-

New York Yankees Versus The Boston Red Sox Sept. 14-16, 2007
    2007-09-14 12:16:00
Well, we're here, the final Red Sox and Yankees' showdown of the regular season. The Sox have a 5 1/2 game lead in the AL East, 5 games in the loss column, thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays' win last night in Toronto. I predicted that win, although Burnett was not involved in the decision. All the Red Sox want to do is avoid the sweep, but I'm thinking they will take 2 of 3 and be sitting pretty for the last 12 games of the season. Manny might play, probably will, and Clemens WILL start on Sunday. Here are the pitching matchups and my accompanying thoughts........• Tonight: Andy Pettitte (13-8, 3.78 ERA) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (14-12, 4.44), 7 p.m., NESN, YES, ESPNPettitte has alway done well against Boston and did exactly that the last time these two teams faced off in August (was it that long ago?). Matsuzaka has been struggling of late, relying far too much on his fastball instead of mixing in his superlative off speed stuff. If he falters early, look for Clay Buchholz to be first ou

    2007-07-25 12:19:00
This was a major league pitching duel, and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 1-0. Daisuke Matsuzaka outpitched CC Sabathia, just, in a sub 3 hour game. He allowed 4 hits and no runs while striking out 5. He threw a tidy 98 pitches and when he needed it, he was able to record the big out(s). The lone run came on a Mike Lowell fly to left that Ben Francisco at first backed off of before trapping it between his glove and the ground. The Sox showed their leather, too, with Julio Lugo, Wily Mo Pena (!!), Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis making sparkling plays in the field to support their team and their pitcher. The Red Sox move to 61-39 and remain 7 1/2 games up on the hot Yankees. But the Yankees have been playing the Devil Rays and the Royals on their latest streak, while we've had the White Sox and the Indians. And tonight is the third game of the 4 game set, with Josh Beckett going against the Indian's Carmona, who is 12-4.Click on the title for the Bost

Memories Of The Boston Red Sox 1967....Part Four
    2007-06-15 14:51:00
As Peter said to me recently, I think it would be more interestingfor the readers to just recall some very specialmemories and not worry so much about the chronology ofthat very special season, circa 1967. The year thebaseball world woke up and noticed the Boston Red Soxonce again. After so many years. No Ted, just Yaz, and so many others! And as you will read inthe upcoming paragraphs by our blog buddy Jay,there were so many teammates who overachieved and did everything possible to march not only to a first place finish in the AL,(remember, there were NO divisions) but to one darnvictory away from winning it all. They captured our hearts and our souls!! Read on for more ofJay's thoughts, priceless memories of what was, and whatmight be again. But it will never be the same as 1967.We go back 40 years, with smiles of joy....."To that end, the Impossible Dream team had an arrayof vagabond players, retreads and just plain averageballplayers who did something special. One suchplayer---a

Memories Of The IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Season. The 1967 Boston Red Sox-Part Three
    2007-06-12 12:27:00
Peter here, and here is Jay's latest installment ofTHE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM SEASON. THE BOSTON RED SOX 1967.My comments will appear with a star."Okay, let's get started with the 1967 season. Remembernow, I was 15 years old and really not aware ofwhat was to come. It wasn't like I woke up one daybefore the season and said, "Okay, I'm going to find afavorite team this year!!" *Peter here....justchecking to make sure that you know when it's me. AndI felt the same way!*Looking back on it, I guess there were some events inearly April that in hindsight must have made me takenotice... i.e. the Yaz catch off Tom Tresh and theBilly Rohr near no-hitter, but still they won a fewand lost a few and weren't really noticeable on theradar early on that year. They had a group ofplayers on this team that could not have foretold thestory waiting to unfold. *And I'll never forget KenColeman's call of that 9th inning Yaz catch in theBilly Rohr near no-hitter. Yaz was in left, and the ball was hit to

***FINAL...A ONE HIT Complete Game For The Boston Red Sox Ace Curt Schilling!!!!!***
    2007-06-07 23:12:00
The Boston Red Sox are keeping intact their lack of lumber...so far. 1-0 SOX. And who knows what will happen. I DO know one thing.....we NEED this win. Stay tuned for either sadness (no no) or euphoria. A huge win it would be...the A's are being stymied by our ace, Mr. Schilling. And he's coming out for the 9th. I don't want to get ahead of myself, or ahead of time itself, so I will meekly blend into the background. For now....2 down in the bottom of the 7th....1-0 good guys. Our guys. Can we just have 7 clean, uncluttered and quick outs? I hope so. The team we love is SO in need of a win. And here we come, and ONLY ONE BATTER has reached base all afternoon against Schill as we leap into the 8th. And that runner was on base because of an error. I do not want to say anything to change the luck. So I won't. Now everyone, let's wish Curt good luck. Faith, now more than ever. I didn't mention a CERTAIN something, nor will I! Here's a hint, through 7 plus, and more to come.........

Memories Of The IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Season. The 1967 Boston Red Sox-Part Two.........Sgt. Pepper And His Band, 60 Years After He Taught Them How To Play!
    2007-06-01 12:22:00
It's Friday, and that means more 1967 memories of that special season.....1967, courtesy of my friend, Jay T. Here is his second installment of 1967 magic. You can acess part one by going back in the archives to May 25th. Thank you Jay, and I'll be back with a quick word afterwards. Take it away, Jay!***********************************************************************As I said earlier, before 1967 I had no "favorite team". All any kid had was Mickey Mantle and the Yankees, and I wanted desperately to be different and HATE the Yankees. I did not want to like a team that won all the time. (To this day I hate the Celtics, the Montreal Canadiens and the Green Bay Packers, all of whom dominated their respective sports back in the 60's). It isn't like I went looking for a team.......I just knew I didn't like the Yankees. So as that famous season unfolded it really was the last thing I expected. The Red Sox were always at the bottom of the league and there was no reason to think 1967

Memories Of The IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Season. 1967...The Boston Red Sox...Our Team....Part One Of Many....
    2007-05-25 18:32:00
I have a guest author who has been my best friend forever. His name is Jay T. We spent the magic that was and is the Boston Red Sox from way back when. And he has been nice enough to write about that wonderful 1967 season. This is just his first post here at Peter's Red Sox Forever, and I promise you that Jay will be back as a regular. Why? That's easy.....to remind us and let us live again that magical season. Through HIS words. And his unforgettable memories. The Red Sox had no business being as good as they were that year. But then these guys lept into our hearts. Forever.......Tony C. YAZ. Reggie Smith, Rico, Lonnie. I could go on, but I'll leave it up to Jay. And he'd love to read your comments! So now, part one....THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM SEASON-1967. Memories of a Boston Red Sox Fan. Thank you Jay. I'll be back with a short comment, but right now, it's time to relive some sweet memories......"I can hardly believe it's been 40 years since the unbelievable and totally miraculou

The Atlanta Braves And The Boston Red Sox Split A Pair
    2007-05-20 12:47:00
The first game was a thing of beauty as Daisuke Matsuzaka baffled the Braves with an assortment of pitches. It seems that he gets better and better with every start. Maybe he's getting used to the firmer feel of the American baseball. Maybe the communication between he and his catcher, Jason Varitek, is getting better. I think it's a combination of the two. But whatever it is, watching him pitch is so enjoyable. And the feeling that a victory is inevitable reminds me so much of when Petey took the mound in his prime. You just know that if the Red Sox score 3 or so runs, that'll be enough. Game over...Sox win. No nervous pacing or hand wringing is necessary. And that is fantastic! Game two was one I was unable to watch, so I'm going to be brief. It was raining. 14-0 Braves. The only effective pitcher for the Sox was JC Romero. Smoltz was lights out. Period. Turn the page. Done.Today another tough matchup looms, as Tim Hudson, 5-1, takes on Kason Gabbard. Hudson and the Braves have t
