Lotus Pool at The New York Botanical Garden
    2008-08-14 20:57:31
Lotus Pool at The New York Botanical GardenSkywatch FridayBeen awhile since I posted a Skywatch Friday but I have been enjoying other people’s creative ways to show the sky. This is one of the outdoor water gardens that are inside the courtyard of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in the Bronx. It is considered the largest Victorian glasshouse in the United States (it is huge). It is easy to get some nice Lotus and Water Lily photos, even with a short lens since many of the plants are growing close to the edge of the pools. Here is a closer shot of the Lotus flowers in the foreground. I used my 17-70mm Sigma lens with a circular polarizer.I am working up in Hyde Park today and have to leave early since it is a long drive. The garden and the surrounding farm are worth the trip. Have a nice Friday. For other Skywatchers check: The Sky Watch Team

    Deja vu: Botanical garden
    2008-04-23 02:15:39
I spent both yesterday's afternoon and today's morning in the Botanical garden ( I did go home for a sleep lol). Although I never miss to visit this oasis of natural beauty whenever in the neighborhood, this time it was for their spring seedlings sale. Yesterday I came too late and today - well I failed to see the notice (in a large font!) that the sale is open only Mon-Fri 11-14. Bugger! We had a bit of an early morning thunderstorm with strong winds but after the clouds have cleared the weather was just amazing, as always after the rain. And what better place to find oneself than in a Botanical garden, with your camera (and low battery! drat) Even though I've only been there yesterday, it was like opening a new treasure chest all over again. And it seems I'll be there Monday. I've scanned through the plants they have for sale and seen quite a few extraordinary wonders that caused excessive salivation ;-)this Sophora tree continues to mesmerize me...(SOPHORA JAPONICA 'PENDULA' )li

    Botanical garden Zagreb
    2008-04-09 04:25:29
Botanical garden - AprilI couldn't hold my horses. I was thrilled to hear of Botanical garden's Opening of the season 2008 last week and planned to visit some time this week. But seeing all the windy weather, I thought by the time I get to visit the place, all the lovely trees in bloom will have lost half of their spring magic due to strong winds ( I know, not the kind of thing most people would worry about).Anyway, I was punished for my wanton behaviour, as half of the garden was still temporarily inaccessible due to some digging about. I guess the gardeners and employees in there hibernated for too long. They should have done all that by now. It was sad to see some rear parts of the garden neglected. Hopefully someone will bring a touch of green thumb there soon. Nevertheless, always a pleasure to be reminded that there is more to life than cars and exhaust fumes. The Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics was founded in 1889 by botany professor, Dr. Antun

Kiku at the New York Botanical Garden
    2007-10-22 12:25:56
Kiku at the New York Botanical Garden Chrysanthemum Festival in the Bronx, 2007 Kiku in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory Courtyards. On Sunday I attended the Kiku Chrysanthemum Show at the New York Botanical Garden. I want to first say that I didn’t take in the whole show and only spent about two and half hours at the garden so this by the nature of my visit can’t be a complete review. Stone

    Queens Botanical Garden
    2007-09-09 15:08:00
Queens Botanical GardenFlushing, New YorkYesterday I left early and visited the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, New York. I wanted to kind of make a clean sweep of the NYC Botanical gardens having already visited the New York Botanical Garden and Wave Hill in the Bronx, Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the Staten Island Botanical Gardens this summer. It wasn’t as much as an adventure as getting to the Staten Island Garden. I drove to the Metro-North Railroad Station in Katonah, New York and got the train to Manhattan. I then bought a Metrocard and took the #7 Subway train to its terminus at Main Street in Flushing, Queens. It is about a 40-minute ride on the Subway and then I walked the eight blocks south on Main Street to the garden. I took the bus back to the station and you may want to consider taking it to the garden. The new Visitor and Administration Building at the Queens Botanical GardenThe garden was nice, smallish compared to the others but it really had a country atmosphe

Staten Island Botanical Garden Canna Lilies
    2007-09-02 15:27:00
Staten Island Botanical Garden Canna LiliesYesterday I decided to visit the Staten Island Botanical Garden. For those that don’t know Staten Island is one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. Here is more info on Staten Island:Click hereI didn’t get to see too much of the Island but what I did see makes me want to go back and explore it some more. It is quite an arduous journey to get there from Connecticut. The first thing I did was hop in the car and drive to Katonah, New York to get the train to Manhattan. After the train brings you to Grand Central Terminal you have to get the Times Square Shuttle, on the Subway, to go downtown. I knew the #1 line is what I wanted to take to the Staten Island Ferry. Once I got on the #1 line I figured I was all set to ride down to the South Ferry station. Oh no, all trains were stopping several stations from South Ferry due to construction with shuttle buses to go the rest of the way. I decided to walk and of course it was a lot lon
