    Brewers 11, Pirates 6
    2008-07-06 16:30:00
Let's just say....it's a good thing we're leaving Miller Park.----Zach Duke was roughed up. The Bucs faced a 4-0 deficit after 1 inning. They did bring out the bats, though, scoring 6 straight runs to actually take a two run lead (Bay and LaRoche homered, Nate hit a 3-run double).----Duke, Denny Bautista, and John Grabow combined to give up seven unanswered runs. The Pirate bats failed to continue to make it interesting, and the Brewers cruised through the late innings for the sweep.------7 game

Brewers 2, Pirates 1 AND Gorzo to the Minors
    2008-07-05 20:47:00
A double dose of bad news.-----[Yahoo.com]The following two events have now taken place twice in one week:1) The Buccos wore sweet Pittsburgh Crawfords uniforms.2) Paul Maholm pitched a great game, but we lose anyway.----------Just a stellar effort from Paul today. 8 innings and one run (Cameron solo shot in the 2nd). 6 K's and only 4 hits. Definitely his best outing since the complete game win over Philly (April 27), and he's officially on a roll.----------That was the only positive today. For

    Brewers 9, Pirates 1
    2008-07-04 16:07:00
[Yahoo.com]--------That didn't work out too well.--------The Bucs were in the game early. They actually could have been in control had they not gone 1/11 with runners in scoring position for the first 5 innings. A bunch of baserunners and hits off ace Ben Sheets (the Bucs knocked him out after 5.2) only amounted to one run.---And one run was going to be nowhere near enough on this day. Gorzelanny was hit around by the Brewers, the defense was bad, and eventually the entire team imploded in the 5

    Game 46 Recap--Pirates 8 Brewers 4
    2008-05-23 14:05:00
[Recap]-------Talk about weird: Tom Gorzelanny. He leads the Pirates in wins, with four. He also has an ERA north of 6.--Gorzo was mediocre, but didn't have to be great last night against Dave Bush and the Brew Crew. Tom struggled through some innings but kept damage down, giving up just a Corey Hart solo shot in the first four innings. He would give up another run in the 6th, and only pitched 5+ innings, walking 4 and striking out 2.--Luckily for Gorzy, the offense woke up. It took a while, tho

    Game 45 Recap--Pirates 1 Brewers 4
    2008-05-21 20:39:00
Another lackluster performance, amounting to the Pirates' 3rd loss in a row. They fall to 4 below .500 and a tie for last place at the moment.Ben Sheets tossed a complete game, giving up just a solo shot to Xavier Nady. He wasn't overly dominant (the Bucs had 11 hits) but was able to mix them up so Pittsburgh couldn't get much going.Ian Snell gave up 4 runs in 6 innings. Still not back to 2007 form, but at least he wasn't terrible.

    Game 45 Recap--Pirates 2 Brewers 7
    2008-05-21 14:13:00
This was, without a doubt in my mind, the worst Pirate game to watch this year (to date).--Why?---1. Struggling prospect Manny Parra shut down the offense.2. Atrocious work in the field. Of course there was the Freddy-not-knowing-how-many-outs-thing, but once Milwaukee started to pile on, things just got sloppy, even if they didn't cost us runs.3. The pitching. Paul Maholm wasn't terrible, keeping it close (2-0 in the 6th) but didn't turn in the start we expected at home vs. a bad team. Burnett

Play Two...WIN TWO! Red Sox 7-5 Brewers 5-3
    2008-05-18 05:02:00
The first game was an afternoon delight. The second game, with a first pitch at 8:36pm EDT, was an error-filled (seven combined errors, a 2008 major league high) nailbiter. But the end result, two wins for the home team that they really needed, was just great. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched six and two thirds wonderful innings, and the bullpen took it from there. Kudos go out to Manny Delcarmen, who was temporarily a resident of Terry Francona's doghouse, with good reason to be. Daisuke moves his won/lost record to 7-0 and is now third in the league with an ERA of 2.15. Quite a change from last year. Kevin Youkilis had this to say after the long day was finished..."It was one of those games (game #2) where it seemed like it took forever and you've got to scratch and claw," Youkilis said. "By the end of the game you're dragging, your bat's dragging. Your body. You have to try to will yourself through the end of it."Big Papi and Mike Lowell were the respective hitting stars, but the bullpen s

    Gagne Out as Brewers Closer
    2008-05-12 13:37:00
The Milwaukee Brewers brain trust could have saved themselves a lot of aggravation, as well as $10 million this year, had they had the good sense to view the three disasterous months that Eric Gagne spent in a Red Sox uniform last year. They made him their closer and this year he's blown five saves, and had yet another meltdown on Saturday that finally led the Brewers to remove him from the role. The Red Sox play the Brewers this week at Fenway. As Gabe Kapler gets the ovations he deserves (if he plays that is), Eric Gagne will get booed and hounded (if he plays that is).Nothing short of what he deserves to get. I just thank the stars above the Red Sox learned their lesson about this guy last year and made no attempt to resign him.

    At least the Brewers lost
    2008-05-05 05:05:01
That was said far too often here last year and it’s happening again.  The only difference is that the Cardinals are in 1st and haven’t received the memo that they are not, in fact, this good.  The Cubs got beat 5-3 and have no lost 7 of 10.  It doesn’t get any easier either.  They head to Cincy for 3 and face their 3 best pitchers (Harang, Cueto, and Volquez).

    Tough break for the Brewers
    2008-05-02 20:22:00
Most of you probably saw the collision between Johson, Fielder and Gallardo over at 1st base yesterday.  Gallardo lay on the ground afterwards clutching his knee in serious pain, but the Brewers decided he was OK to continue pitching.  The damage was already done at that point, but they didn’t know what that damage was so why take a chance?  Turns out it was a very serious injury.  Gallardo tore his ACL and will more than likely miss the rest of the season.  It would be very surprising to see him pitch again this year. That puts a serious dent in the Brewers plans to reach the playoffs this year.  PECOTA projected Gallardo to be worth 4.7 WARP.  That’s a big loss to a team that once had some great starting pitching depth, but now turns to the recently demoted Dave Bush to take Gallardo’s spot.  PECOTA saw a rebound for Bush this year and only projected him to be 10 VORP fewer than Gallardo.  However, Manny Parra is the on

    2008-05-01 11:24:12
Did you miss me? As the Cubs look to take the rubber match in this series, the game's headline will be dominated by Alfonso Soriano coming off the disabled list. Some thought maybe a rehab assignment would help him, but he's Alfonso Soriano for crying out loud! He doesn't do rehab assignments, he goes fresh off the D.L. right to home plate. Soriano's return also brings about two arguments, one that is ridiculous and one that may hold some water. The first is the whole, "Oh, the Cubs were better without Soriano!" While the record may have shown that, over the course of the season, if you believe that, well, I don't know what to say. I mean, this guy did lead the Cubs in home runs last year. Not to mention his rocket arm in left field. I'm ending this discussion here b/c there really isn't much else to say. The other argument revolves around "Soriano shouldn't bat leadoff." And I can see that, but you know what? It's not going to change, at least for now. That's where Soriano is most co

While the Cubs were 10-5 with Alfonso Soriano on the DL, Lou Piniella gets a very important piece of the puzzle back today. Soriano is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list and reportedly will return to the leadoff spot in the lineup. The Cubs need Soriano to comeback, fit in with their newfound patience at the plate and be the impact player he was a year ago. A 16-10 record and just a win shy of setting a new all-time mark is very good....but losing 4 of the last 6 cannot be sitting to well with their skipper. The Cubs will try to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the year tonight behind Ryan Dempster. The offense must continue to be patient against Jeff Suppan, get into the Brewers bullpen and return the favor from last night.

I loathe the unoriginal headline So, most of you have heard about my man Dome being on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which also carries some sort of curse factor. And if there's any team synonymous with curses, it's you-know-who. That is, if you believe in those types of things. I'm in the middle of the road here on the curse/superstition thing (sometimes I sit in the same position if the Cubs are winning, won't listen to certain songs if they're losing, etc.), but I think there is one thing we here at this beautiful blog can agree on and it's this: Stop it with the "It's Gonna Happen" crap! It's a dumb phrase coined by a guy who is probably a so-so fan when it all comes down to it, and it's ridiculous that people (even moreso now) are picking up on it. First off, what's gonna happen exactly? Be more specific. World Series, or the title itself? I mean, we might as well be the White Sox and start cranking up "Don't Stop Believing." It was touched on earlier, but the Cubs need better

The Cubs have lost two games in a row. SportsCenter has already prefaced their highlights with "trouble for one of October's contenders." A projected record of 0-162 has already been documented on not one, but two CBCG sites. In times like this, despair and depression, when things are at their lowest point, the Cubs can turn to only one man who will bring them from the ashes to greatness. One man who can put the weight of the world on his back and not even grimace. One man who makes bold predictions and is ready to back it up. That man is ... Ryan Scott Dempster Too early to be thinking about slumpbusters? Maybe. Maybe not. So what if he hasn't started a game in three years? This is the man who predicted the Cubs will win the World Series this season, so might as well be him who gets the team back on track. Standing in his way is Milwaukee's Dave Bush. I'm scared to say much more since Jeff Suppan was made to look great by the dismal offense yesterday. In news that has been rehashe

Uh, can we get a re-do? Quick day off, and baseball is back! For as heartbreaking as the first game was, I was impressed on how the Cubs came back. Maddog pointed it out on a comment the other day at ACB, but that was a strong characteristic of last year's team: they always fought hard to try and rally when they were down, no matter the score. Some teams would go quietly into the night after just giving up a 3-spot heading into their last at-bat, but the Cubs had a spirited rally. If they continue doing that, I think this team will be just fine. And on the hot topics of Game One, here are my quick thoughts: I think Kerry Wood will be fine and hope he gets a chance to come out today (prediction: 1-2-3 ninth, 1st save). I think Ryan Theriot will get at least one hit today, but his time at leadoff won't be for long. Soriano will end up back there by summer. I think Felix Pie still deserves a shot, but his leash is shortened as well. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Reed Johnson ge

Today's the day when SABR geeks and casual fans alike can embrace each other in shared joy, when we can all stop prentending we care about the Bulls, when the pain of our teams exiting the NCAA tournament two rounds too early is dulled by the knowledge that the ivy will soon be green and the air in the bleachers perfumed with spilled beer and vomit. Today is the day when Bears' fans, up until now bearing down in solidarity, divide up once more into north and south side camps, sworn again to enmity until at least next October. To celebrate this glorious day, I've prepared an extra-large batch of Blue Kool Aid for all of us (the twist of lime was

Spring Training Game Thread: Brewers at Cubs; 2:05 p.m. CT/3:05 ET
    2008-03-27 12:30:00
Cubs fans, here we have probably the most meaningless game in spring training. So, before we get to those details (or lack thereof), let's continue a different conversation: Folks, no matter what he or any old fogie says, Kerry Wood needs a theme song. If Wrigley Field is going to become Sears Park or Old Style Field, then dammit, we're going to have more gimmicks! Sooner or later, the whole "Oh, wow, Woody's in!" is going to wear off with the fans and their excited applause. Come June, it will be an expected thing. And that's where the song comes in. Now, there are thousands to choose from, I'll just give three. One, I mentioned in the first thread: "When the Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash. Hearing this, opposing batters will think one of two things: 1. Kerry Wood believes he is God 2. The world is ending soon Either way, it's likely to throw his concentration off. Or, as Maddog stated earlier, use something that would be so off-the-wall, it would cause hitters to be confusded

    Cubs 4, Brewers 6 : Thanks a lot Rich
    2008-03-10 20:26:26
Any other bright ideas? I think there is little doubt that Rich Hill is scary-talented. I also think there is little doubt that Rich Hill has issues in his noggin. I know it's just Spring Training and everything, but Rich, when struggling, tends to get down on himself and start freaking out on the mound. I had hoped he'd outgrown this phase, but today I saw that exact same "Mommy, get me out of here" look on his face as we've seen every time he gets into trouble out there. Hill's line today: 2.2 IP/8 hits/4 runs/4 ER/2 BB/3 SO/7.04 EEEESSSSH. That's not so good, Rich. Normally, I wouldn't really care how you do in ST, but, so far this Spring, your line looks like this: 7.2 IP/11 hits/6 runs/6 ER/5 BB/7 SO I'm afraid you've gotten yourself into one of those patented Rich Hill Vortexes of Terror, and with both Dempster and Marquis threatening to make the starting rotation, we just can't have that. Three sucky pitchers in the starting rotation no makey for happy Cubs fans. So whatever

The Return Of McDreamy: Cubs @ Brewers 3:05 CT
    2008-03-10 12:00:00
Hello, Love! MLB.com: SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Mark DeRosa can't wait to get in a game. The Cubs second baseman is expected to make his Cactus League debut Monday, when the team travels to Maryvale to face the Milwaukee Brewers. "I feel fine," DeRosa said Sunday. "I'm ready to be one of the guys again." Awwww! Isn't it so CUTE the way he talks and says things? Rich Hill makes his first start today for the Cubs, who travel to Maryvale, AZ today to take on Prince Fielder and the rest of the Northern Beer Team. It's an away game again, which means more scrubs on parade for us. Joy. The game today is being broadcast on Comcast Chicago, as well as mlb.tv and mlb.audio. It's getting harder and harder to find interesting things to say about these boring-ass games, so I'm just going to stop talking. Lineups to come.

Do-Over: Brewers at Cubs 1:20 CDT
    2007-07-01 18:30:00
Those of us who were watching Sesame Street/Free To Be You and Me in the 1970s will remember Rosie's advice to us all on days like yesterday: It sucks to split the first two games of a three-game series, because now the BEST we can hope for is to pick up one game. Even more disheartening is the realization that two of our young starters are having some serious problems out there as of late. And the worst part of the whole thing is that it's almost like the big comeback on Friday never happened. It's upsetting. It's frustrating. It's alright to cry. Go listen to Rosie again. Alas, there is no rest for the weary (that would be our pigpen), as OGDJM!(5-4, 3.46), who's had his own . . . issues lately, takes the mound today against Dave Bush (6-6, 5.06). And as long as we're talking, I have some issues with you people. Granted, I was passed out on the couch during the game yesterday, but I can't help but notice that NO rally animals were posted at any point on the game thread. How

No other way to put it, that's what this series is. OK, Cubs, you guys are on a winning streak, are almost back at .500 and winning the games you're supposed to. Now comes when we separate the men from the boys. The Big Bad Brewers come to town with a 7.5 game lead in the Central and the best record in the N.L. (46-32). The good news for the Cubs is that Milwaukee is only 16-19 on the road. Today the Brewers trot out their No. 1 pitching prospect, Yovani Gallardo. This kid (drafted in 2004 out of high school) is the real deal. He was tearing up AAA ball (leading all minor leagues with 110 strikeouts) before getting the call-up. In two starts as a big leaguer, he is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. And apparently he likes massages too. It's going to be a good matchup of youngsters, as the Cubs will have Rich Hill throwing for them. Hill didn't get a win in his last start (the suicide squeeze game against the White Sox), but pitched a lot better than he had of late, allowing just one run whil

So. . . . there's a game today and stuff. Against the Brewers. We'll probably lose. Again. With some crappy lineup that will probably include and And then will come in and blow the game. It all seems so pointless. Know who I wish was the GM of this team? Anyway, our supposed "ace" takes the mound today, in what will most likely result in some sort of meltdown, though probably not as entertaining as the one that happened on Friday. Jeff Suppan (7-5, 3.71) heads to the hill for the Crew. Any guesses who comes out on top in this one? I have a few thoughts. . . The fact that Z pitches today most likely means that Kewpie Hill will probably be catching. Whis is like. . . whatever. None of this matters, anyway. El Partido: 1. 35,000 Brewers fans 2. No rest for the weary, sports fans. After two big wins in a row, during which time the Cubs, inexplicably, did a lot of things right, we go right back at Milwaukee and Prince Fielder's ass again tonight. If Mikey can manage to stay behind the plate and out of everyone's way in the infield tonight, we might actually win again. (so I spent part of my afternoon having fun with motivational posters. so what?) Tonight the Cubs send Ted Lilly (4-2, 3.52) to the mound against Claudio Vargas (3-1, 3.90). We've faced Vargas twice already this year, the first time he lasted all of 2 innings and gave up 3 runs, and the second time he gave up 4 runs in just over 4 innings. In other words, no real reason to worry about this guy. The guy we DO have to worry about, however, is the deceptively-named Prince Fielder, who has an insane OPS of 1.024 right now, depsite apparently not being of any royal blood whatsoever. WOWSA. And he's hitting .323 against us this season. Ugh. Just walk him, Ted. N

Aaahhhh, Milwaukee. Is there a more cultured city in America? Never having fully come to terms with his immigrant heritage, the Italian Sausage makes a brief but ill-advised foray into the world of the KKK If there is, I don't know what it is. Beer. Various assorted sausages. Cheese fries. Life doesn't get any better than that. Oh wait. It gets WAY better than that. It's about time that life gets better for the Cubs, lest this entire site turn into a cage match as an outlet for the pervasive grouchiness which has consumed us lo these past many weeks. I'm no fan of the "this is a must-win series!" that tends to be thrown around on other sites, but this is one case where I am willing to admit that this series is going to be interesting. How will the Cubs react after Lou's four-game suspension and yesterday's shellacking of the Braves? Is this the beginning of a run? Or the beginning of the end for our caped crusaders? After Sunday's game, McDreamy said he felt a palpable chang

    Quick Hits: Marlins/Brewers Game 4
    2007-06-03 18:19:22
The Marlins and Brewers conclude their four-game series at Miller Park, and the final game of the season between these teams. It is the seventh game (4-2) of an 11-game, 10-day road trip to Chicago-NL (3-0), Milwaukee (1-2, 1g remaining) and Atlanta (4g, June 4-6) including a make-up of an April 14 rain out on June 5 in Atlanta. Florida was 2-4 on the last homestand vs. the Phillies (2-1) and Mets (0-3). No TV Yesterday? No Problem: The Marlins won 5-2 in Milwaukee behind two-run homers from Miguel Cabrera (6th inning) and Josh Willingham (8th inning), and an RBI-single by Hanley Ramirez which broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning. Matt Lindstrom got the win in relief, as Byung-Hyun Kim started and got a no-decision leaving after 6.0 innings with a 2-1 lead. Steeeeerike!: Armando Benitez recorded his 900th career strikeout last night (Ryan Braun). He is currently 4th among active relievers in strikeouts trailing Trevor Hoffman (981), Billy Wagner (964) and Roberto Hernandez (924).

    Quick Hits: Marlins/Brewers Game 3
    2007-06-02 22:52:29
The Marlins and Brewers play the third game of a four-game series at Miller Park. It is the sixth game (3-2) of an 11-game, 10-day road trip to Chicago-NL (3-0), Milwaukee (0-2, 2g remaining) and Atlanta (4g, June 4-6) including a make-up of an April 14 rain out on June 5 in Atlanta. Florida was 2-4 on the last homestand vs. the Phillies (2-1) and Mets (0-3). Super Surge: Florida has hit nine homers over the last six games, and has 62 homers on the season, third-most in the NL behind Cincinnati (74) and Milwaukee (70). Florida, who set the club record with 182 homers in 2006, is currently on pace for 183 homers. Gettin It Started Right: Marlins leadoff hitters have combined to bat .321 (75×234) this season, tops in the NL, third in the Majors. Hanley Ramirez, who has not led-off since May 14, hit a ML-best .343 from that spot.
