| | | Nets to Newark and not Brooklyn? | | 2008-05-01 22:45:00 | | Could the supposed Brooklyn-bound New Jersey Nets be actually about to make an about-face and head south to Newark, rather than east to Brooklyn? Well, it looks like it might be in the works, at the very least, according to an interesting story in today's Star-Ledger. You'll want to check this out if you're a Nets fan.Landing the Nets would be a coup if Jeff Vanderbeek is able to convince Bruce Ratner to sell him and his investment group the team. It seems like the bond market may be a huge factor as to whether Ratner is able to finance a proposed $950-million arena in Brooklyn. It ought to be interesting to see what happens here. There will likely be a lot more on this story in the coming days. | | By: The Hudson Line Blog | | |

| | Real estate slump sets Brooklyn back | | 2008-04-24 17:55:00 | | A rise in foreclosures and gloom about the economy could stop up-and-coming Brooklyn neighborhoods in their tracks. As the real estate market cools, fears grow that professionals will lose interest in such areas as Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York and Brownsville.“When there’s a pullback in the marketplace, the ‘newer’ neighborhoods are often harder hit,” said Frank Percesepe, Brooklyn VP for Corcoran. These neighborhoods are among the top 10 Brooklyn areas with foreclosures, according to a 2006 list from NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy.

| | And He's Selling a Bridge in Brooklyn, Too | | 2008-01-03 23:19:00 | | The ridiculous, almost laughable saga that is Roger Clemens and his steroid use took another turn on Thursday when an excerpt of the upcoming "60 Minutes" interview The Carpetbagger gave to Mike Wallace was released.Clemens insists he's "never" taken any steroids. From the Boston Globe:Roger Clemens said former trainer Brian McNamee injected him with the painkiller lidocaine and the vitamin B-12 -- not any performance-enhancing drugs. In the first excerpts released from the pitcher's interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," which is to be broadcast Sunday night, Clemens maintained the denials he has issued since McNamee implicated him in the Mitchell report on doping in baseball, which was released Dec. 13.McNamee, a former strength coach for the Blue Jays and Yankees, told Mitchell he personally injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while they were with Toronto, and with steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and 2001 while with New York."Roger took bunches of his shots over his career, much the way racehorses do, unfortunately," Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said after the excepts were released Thursday.Clemens issued a video statement on Dec. 23 denying McNamee's accusations and plans to hold a news conference Monday. Clemens did not mention injections of painkillers or vitamins."That short statement didn't go into any details and simply told the public at large he did not take steroids or any other performance-enhancing drugs. That's never been a contention of his," Hardin said."The reason he hasn't stepped out personally before now was really our decision, not his, and that was to more deliberately look into how in the world the Mitchell report could have reached what we believe was this totally wrong conclusion before we started talking out. Now we're more comfortable with all of that, and he's going to answer whatever questions they have."During the CBS interview, recorded last Friday at Clemens' home in Katy, Texas, Clemens was asked whether McNamee | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

And it is not only the prices that are drawing them, but a cultural vibrancy that the city's central borough has lost. While the rest of the country has experienced a drop in property prices, the city's market has defied its many Jeremiahs by staying buoyant. As recently as August, when the sub-prime mortgage crisis was already making daily headlines, the New York Times property supplement ran a banner headline proclaiming "The Manhattan Real Estate Slump that Wasn't".

| | "Come Back to Brooklyn" | | 2007-09-24 02:52:00 | | I got an interesting email from my aunt the other day, and it was this video on YouTube, with a musical tribute to the beloved borough of Brooklyn called "Come Back to Brooklyn." I thought it was pretty good, with a catchy tune to it. It contains many scenes of Brooklyn and its neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge, where Yours Truly was born.As you know, there are two types of people in the world: those who were born in Brooklyn, and those who wish they were. Even if you're not from Brooklyn, please do check it out. It's a cool little video. | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | Vision Group developing Brooklyn condo project | | 2007-08-12 23:52:42 | | Vision Real Estate Group, owned by Amir Yerushalmi, is developing the Greenpoint Lofts business condominium project in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for $22 million. The project has 68 offices. Soaring rents in New York, where 95% of offices are rented, has resulted in a new trend of business condominiums, or commercial condominiums, in which offices can be purchased, rather than leased. A business condominium can be purchased for half the price of an apartment condominium, and real estate experts predict that the business condominium will become an increasingly important niche market in the coming years.

| | "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush" | | 2007-07-15 00:26:00 | | This past week on HBO, a documentary film debuted called "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush." I didn't get a chance to see it during the week, as I was busy with the Red Sox games and other assorted things. But earlier today, I had a chance to see it. I'm really glad I did. It is simply one of the best documentaries ever made about baseball. As many of you know, I am a descendant of Brooklyn Dodger fans. Both my parents, my aunts and uncles, as well as my grandparents, were loyal fans. I knew this was a film I had to check out. As I write this, I live just ten minutes on the subway from where Ebbets Field once stood. (My dad saw the film the night it debuted, and said it was very well-made.)"Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush," narrated wonderfully by Liev Schreiber, is a history of one of baseball's most beloved teams, but it is centered on the years 1947-1957, the teams that were nicknamed "The Boys of Summer." | | Brooklyn condo sales stunner | | 2007-07-12 00:11:00 | | With luxury condos soaring all over the borough, Brooklynites might have reason to expect a massive invasion from well-heeled neighbors in Manhattan. But figures obtained by the Brooklyn News from a number of high-profile developments show that borough residents have led the push to snap up those new homes - a trend even the developers did not expect.

| | Brooklyn Lager | | 2007-04-29 19:06:41 | | It seems like the fight between David and Goliath, but in reality it’s just a battle between beer brewers. Obviously, there are the megabrewers like Anheuser Busch and InBev which generate beer as a branded commodity and target the mainstream market. Then there are the smaller brewers who craft their beers more as an art and target people who appreciate variety and flavour. Brooklyn Lager obviously falls into the smaller brewer category, but they are a growing by leaps and bounds and are now considered one of the top 40 breweries in the US. Also, they just recently entered the Ontario market with Brooklyn Lager. I was happy to pick up a six pack to see what’s brewing in Brooklyn.

When you look at a list of the world's top paddling spots, it's unlikely that you'll find Brooklyn, New York.
And it's even less likely that you'll find the Gowanus Canal, a narrow sliver of water that cuts its way from Gowanus Bay through the industrial zones of Red Hook, South Brooklyn, and Park Slope. It's not exactly what you might call scenic, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. It's lined by crumbling warehouses, generating plants, shadowy factories, Coast Guard fuel depots, and even a Home Depot. It meanders beneath the Gowanus Expressway, one of the busiest highways in New York City, and has been referred to as the most polluted waterway in America. A slick, rainbow film of oil and other chemicals gives the water in the canal a colorful, shimmering candy coating that would be beautiful at sunset if it didn't smell like cold metal and gunpowder and leave a disturbing acrid taste in the air. Visibility in the water is almost zero, and any trip acros | | By: SiteBits | | |
