| Windows - Boost Your Dial-up Internet Browsing With Local Caching System | | 2008-07-08 14:06:05 | | Modern dial-up modems typically have a maximum theoretical speed of 56 kbit/s, although in most cases 40-50 kbit/s is the norm. Dial-up connections usually have latency that can be as high as 400 ms or even more. Of course because of this high latency, every request to gateway and dns server will have a long wait time or delayed. This would make our Internet Browsing feel so slow. In fact, I almost never want to go shopping unless I know I'm going to get to go to a bookstore or two in the process. Book shopping is far more entertaining that shopping for anything else and I imagine everyone but my girlfriend hates to shop for books with me because I am a purely calculated book shopper, and, as a result, I take forever to get done. Most of my friends are done after fifteen minutes, but I'll be there for another forty-five, or maybe even an hour. But I've noticed something about how I shop for books: I almost always buy science fiction over anything else. Now, I know that I personally am an SF nut. | World of Insecure browsing | | 2008-07-02 02:17:00 | | If you are surfing the web through a browser that isn't up to date then you fall under the pool of those 40% internet surfers who are more prone to malicious attack. Almost 59% people use the latest version of their internet browsers and they are safer compared to the above mentioned 40%. The numbers are disturbingly high for anyone working in IT security.
These figures are revealed as the result of a comprehensive study conducted by researchers at The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Google and IBM Internet Security Services. The researchers performed their analysis using Google's database of user information. The data between January 2007 and June 2008 was gathered for the analysis.
It was found during the research that although software vendors provide patches for security problems, users take days, weeks or months for updating their applications. However it was concluded that it's no | | By: Let's Talk Electronics

| Slow Browsing of Network Drives in Vista | | 2008-04-22 20:47:00 | | I've been noticing lately that when open my network folder connections, there is about a 5-6 second delay when browsing as it seems Windows Vista is searching the entire computer to "find" the already present network drive data. Attempting to click on folders or files that show up while its seaching seem to be delayed as well. Eventually, you may even get the "Windows is not responding" message. Our network domain is made up of mostly Windows 2003 servers so this may have something to do with it but I am not sure and I do not have access permissions to be able to troubleshoot this myself. So, is there a workaround for this slowness?Of course there is......and yes I found it by using Google. | RDF Browsing Tool | | 2008-03-24 09:19:06 | | A new Hp report of possible interest, Humboldt: Exploring Linked Data by Georgi Kobilarov and Ian Dickinson (HPL-2008-23)Abstract: We present Humboldt, a novel user interface for browsing RDF data. Current user interfaces for browsing RDF data are reviewed. We argue that browsing tasks require both a facet browser's ability to select and process groups of resources at a time and a 'resource at a time' browser's ability to navigate anywhere in a dataset. We describe Humboldt which combines these two features in a single coherent interface. Our approach is based on the operation of pivoting, which enables the user to move the focus of a browsing from one set of resources to a set of related resources. With repeated use of the pivot operation the user can browse anywhere in the data. We describe a preliminary evaluation of our approach and discuss its implications for further development. | Browsing for Cheap AAA Rechargeable Batteries | | 2007-12-28 02:53:08 | | Cheap AAA rechargeable 600mAh GP batteries were considered old stocks to the few shops I visited nearby my home in Ampang. However, I saw a 1000mAh version selling at RM39.90 in one of the shops. The price was more than twice the price of the 600mAh version. Sure that the 600mAh does not last as long as the high powered versions (maybe 2/3) but its cheap price most certainly makes it worthwhile to be utilizing four pairs for a single digital camera. I guess I am going to be browsing around more shops for cheap rechargeable AAA batteries. | | By: movie special | | |

What makes Glubble different is that it’s not a typical web filter. Instead, it’s something that you tell it what you approve of. It also allows each member of the family to have their own customized access to the Web. If a site is not on your approved list, then your kids can’t get to it.
Once installed you’ll find it comes with a beginner’s pack of popular sites. You can add and remove as you like the sites you want. To get a preview, check out GlubbleWorld.
Through this GlubbleWorld of approved sites, you can also use popular search engines like Google and Yahoo. But not to worry: search results are filtered.

| Maximize Your Browsing Productivity | | 2007-05-30 02:24:00 | | As internet marketers we have to do a lot of surfing and it takes up a big portion of our time. Even before my internet marketing days I surfed a lot and wanted to minimize the time spent for navigating between websites.
This is one reason why I used a browser called Opera. It saved much of my time. For example you don’t have to push the back button which is located all the way up in the left corner, or the backspace key which i’s pretty time consuming when your hands aren’t on the keyboard and the key is somewhere in the middle. Right mouse click, left click and back you go. Or left click, right click to go forward.
Other great function was automatic login. You had to login once, browser remembered the password and next time you just had to click ctrl+Enter. If there were multiple accounts a list with usernames appeared.
Now the browser of my choice is Firefox because it has several advantages. One of them is the Firefox SEO plugin. My Google searches wouldn’t | | By: Internet Marketing Blog

| Use Open DNS for lightning-fast Web browsing | | 2007-05-27 14:34:00 | | No matter how big the broadband pipe you use to surf the Web, it's not big enough. Everyone, whether they use a slowpoke dial-up modem or the fastest FiOS line, wants to surf faster. There's a simple way you can get to Web sites faster, and it won't cost you a penny. You can hack the way your PC uses the Domain Name System (DNS), the technology underlying all Web browsing. It's far simpler to do than you might imagine, as you'll see in this article.Understanding DNSBefore you start, it's a good idea to get a basic understanding of how DNS works. When you type in a URL such as www.computerworld.com, that URL needs to be translated into a numeric IP address that Web servers and Internet routers can understand. When you type in a URL, a DNS server does the translation, from www.computerworld.com to 65.221.110.98, for example.DNS servers live on the Internet, and your computer contacts them with the request to do that translation, which is commonly called name resolution. | 3B is making 3D web browsing today | | 2007-05-07 15:05:33 | | 3B is a newish product that’s available for download now (Windows only at the moment, with promises of Mac and *nix coming soon).
What’s it do? It’s software that can transform web space into 3D space. They’ve got a few demos up on their site right now and if you’re running Windows you can test it out yourself. It looks interesting but I’m wondering just how well this will do.
3D space and VR have always been computer pipe dreams (with the continued promise of being right around the corner). Will this be one of the first entries into usable 3D web space? Or will it be just another gimmick?
I’m hoping it does well and has some real functionality too it - time will tell. | | By: ArsGeek

| Browsing the Cocktail Blogosphere Part VI | | 2007-04-08 17:34:48 | | The world of blogging continues to roll on. Every few months I find a few more cocktail and spirit related blogs that I add to my reading list. In the last few months the number of new cocktail related blogs has thinned out, so I’ve supplemented with a couple of spirit related blogs and a few industry related blogs. This isn’t anything new, but just an observation that cocktail blog growth seems to be stagnating. Also, anyone who has a blog should participate in the upcoming Mixology Monday blogging events (April 16, Champagne Cocktails). It is a great way to get links to your blog and generate interest in what you have to say on the matter. Blogging is only fun if people know about your site, otherwise you are just talking to yourself and that is just weird.
