    Joba Has Good Bullpen Session
    2008-08-25 14:40:00
I mentioned earlier today that Joba was set to throw 35 pitches in the bullpen today at Yankee Stadium. He has finished his bullpen session, and according to Brian Cashman he "threw well."He will have another, longer bullpen session on Thursday. ...

Joba Set for Another Bullpen Session
    2008-08-25 10:10:00
It may be an off day for the Bombers, but all the Yankees aren't off today. Joba Chamberlain will be at Yankee Stadium today to throw another bullpen session. His last bullpen session was on Saturday in Baltimore and it went very well, he threw 30 pitches, and only threw his fastball and changeup. This time around he will be limited to 35 pitches, and will be allowed to throw all four of his pitches (fastball, slider, change, curve). The Yankees have still not mentioned what Joba's next step woul...

The Bullpen Makes an Easy Win Interesting
    2008-08-14 09:54:00
The Red Sox jumped out to a big lead once again last night, and with Jon Lester on the mound, it looked fairly secure. It was 8-0 and the Sox were cruising in the 8th. But Lester gave up a solo home run to Ian Kinsler with one out. The next two men reached and that was the end of the night for Jon. He was superb, giving the bullpen a rest. But Mike Timlin looked extremely hittable, and served up a big fat fastball to Milton Bradley which he sent into the rightfield bleachers to make it 8-4. He also allowed a double before getting the second out. Javier Lopez threw one pitch to end the 8th.Justin Masterson put the first two on in the 9th before getting a DP and foul out to end the game, 8-4. Seeing the bullpen whittling down another big lead once again made me nervous. The Red Sox jumped all over Texas starter Luis Mendoza early, and it was 8-0 by the fifth inning. Kevin Youkilis continued his very hot hitting, getting three doubles, and Jed Lowrie had another clutch double to drive in tw...

Bullpen Implodes As White Sox Overpower Rangers, 10-8
    2008-07-24 05:05:44
Join me, if you will, for an annotated review of Wednesday evening’s incomprehensible rubber match between the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field: 1:08 p.m. - Shortstop Michael Young lofts a 3-2 fastball from rookie left-hander Clayton Richard into the warm, sunny afternoon sky, willing the baseball beyond the left field fence [...]...

    Bullpen Arsonists on Parade
    2008-07-03 11:18:00
Things were looking up last night. Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima combined for six solid innings against Tampa Bay last night, allowing just one run on four hits. (Although Dice-K struggled to go five, thus putting more pressure on the bullpen.) Dustin Pedroia was having the night of his life, hitting a home run, triple and double in his first three at-bats, and scored all three times. Scott Kazmir, the so-called Red Sox killer, struggled through four innings. It looked like the four-game losing streak was coming to an end, and it was 4-1 by the seventh inning stretch. Then the bottom of the seventh came along, and everything changed.Manny Delcarmen came in and had nothing. Craig Hansen then came in and couldn't the ball over the plate. David Aardsma got one out and intentionally walked the next batter. Javier Lopez got a strikeout, then gave up a two-run single to end the scoring for Tampa Bay.The bullpen simply got torched. The ugly numbers:One inning, five hits, six runs, five ...

    Rangers,Bullpen shut down Bombers 3-2
    2008-07-01 14:56:00
As you can see, the Yankees dropped a second straight to the Rangers, this time by the score of 3 to 2. They once again blew an opportunity to gain ground on the Red Sox who lost again tonight, and again the Rays gain a game, there lead is now up to 7.5 games.ON THE MOUND:Joba Chamberlain started for the Yankees, and was not his normal self. He battled through four innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 4 and striking out 6. He had no command of any of his pitches tonight, and was in trouble from beginning to end.Dan Giese relieved Chamberlain in the 5th and pitched a scoreless inning.Coming off a somewhat shaky outing in his MLB debut at Shea on Sunday, David Robertson was impressive in two scoreless innings tonight. He had some control issues and walked 2, but didn't allow a hit, and struck out 3.Jose Veras pitched a scoreless 8th. He didn't have his best command, but did the job. With the game tied in the 9th the Yankees called on Mariano Rivera, who has been perfect in save sit...

    Blame It On the Bullpen
    2008-06-29 09:05:00
The Red Sox let one get away last night, as they saw leads of 4-0 and 9-6 go down the drain in Houston, as the Astros won a shootout, 11-10.Jon Lester was given a 4-0 lead in the third, but it quickly disappeared on a Carlos Lee two-run single and a three-run homer by ex-Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta. Lester gave up six runs total in five innings for his first rough outing in some time, but actually left with the possibility of getting the win.The Red Sox rallied for five runs in the sixth, capped by a two-run double by Kevin Youkilis. But the bullpen couldn't hold it. David Aardsma put two on in the seventh, and they both scored on a single and a passed ball. Manny Delcarmen came in with a 9-8 lead in the 8th and promptly gave up a home run to Ty Wigginton, and Houston added two more in the inning for a 11-9 lead.Mike Lowell hit a solo shot with one out in the ninth, but it wasn't enough, as Houston held on for the win. Delcarmen has been terrific in his last few outings, retirin...

Chernobyl: Rangers’ Bullpen Meltdown Fuels 13-8 Loss
    2008-06-02 04:14:12
The Texas Rangers’ unexplainable daytime hex perseveres. Mo Calls A Bullpen Meeting
    2008-05-29 10:14:00
From Ed Price:The struggling Yankees bullpen met as a group before last night's game, apparently at the behest of closer Mariano Rivera.Manager Joe Girardi, who lent his office at Camden Yards to the pitchers, deferred comment to Rivera. "He's always a great leader," Girardi said. Asked about the session, Rivera at first played coy. Then he acknowledged the meeting, saying only, "That's our thing." The group met for at least 25 minutes before batting practice began. "Just talking," Edwar ...

Joba May Stay In The Bullpen?!?
    2008-05-17 11:04:00
Ed Price/Newsday:Joba Chamberlain may not be converted from reliever to starter this season, Yankees manager Joe Girardi conceded today."That's possible, yes," Girardi said of keeping Chamberlain in the bullpen all year. The statement seemed a departure from the previous portrayal of the Yankees' plans for Chamberlain. Now, instead of the move being inevitable, it will be based more on need."It's not a preset decision, I can tell you that," Girardi said. "It's a decision that is based on a lot of different things. And we'll continue to discuss it and continue to look at our needs.""We've seen to somewhat work out the fourth spot (with Darrell Rasner)," Girardi said. "We need to get Ian (Kennedy) going. That's the bottom line. Yes, I believe we have enough starting pitching. But we have to get Ian going, and we have to keep the other guys going, that's the bottom line. And we have to keep them healthy." ...

    Bullpen IMPLOSION...Baltimore 6 Boston 3
    2008-05-15 04:25:00
This is getting old. FAST. For the third straight game, the Boston Red Sox staked themselves to a 3-0 lead, and for the third consecutive time, the Sox let the game slip away. To be more specific, the bullpen, in the form of Javie Lopez, Craig Hansen and Hideki Okajima, let the victory slip away. Lopez entered the game in the seventh inning and quickly recorded two outs. Freddie Bynum hit a grounder to Pedroia, but Pedey could not make the play. Runner on first with two outs...doesn't sound too bad, does it? Wait. Hansen was called in to relieve Lopez, and he allowed a single to the number 9 hitter, Quiroz, and a walk to Roberts to load the bases. Bye bye Hansen. Zero outs recorded...maybe you should consult Ah-nold again...soon! And then the Darkman was lit up like fireworks on the Fourth of July, a regular starburst cluster in the night sky. Okie gave up a monster grand slam slugged by Payton, and the game was effectively over. Okie has now allowed eleven out of fourteen inherited r...

    Zito De-Promoted To Bullpen

    Masterson Masterful, Bullpen Blows Up
    2008-04-25 11:29:00
It was a brilliant day at Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon, with brilliant blue skies and warm temperatures. (I'll have more on the day in the next post.) The Red Sox have been bothered by the flu, which has gone through the clubhouse. Terry Francona made a wise decision by holding Tim Wakefield back so he can start in Tampa on Friday night. Wake owns the Rays in the dome, so the Sox were forced to bring up another starter from the minors, namely rookie Justin Masterson.Masterson, who was drafted two years ago out of San Diego State, was mentioned prominently in Johan Santana trade talks this past winter, and is considered by some scouts to have a future in the majors as a number 3 starter. He's started this season at Portland in the Eastern League, and got the call for the finale against the LA Angels. From the start Masterson was in command. His poise was impressive. He was in trouble only once, and got a DP to get himself out. He allowed just a home run to Mike Napoli, on two hits i...

    Masterful Masterson, Bogus Bullpen
    2008-04-25 04:55:00
The Red Sox needed an emergency starter yesterday so they brought up Justin Masterson, a Double A pitcher for Portland, to start the series finale against the LA Angels and their deep and potent lineup. And he was better than anyone could have imagined. I guess that's why he's rated the top pitching prospect of the Sox organization. He went six smooth innings, giving up a solo run and only two hits. He walked four, though, and that's what contributed to his pitch count of 95. But that doesn't matter - he has a bright future with the big club staring at him right in the face. The Sox sent him back to Portland after the start and before they jetted to Tampa Bay, but he expected it. He'll be back. He'll be back. Theo said this... "He did a tremendous job with his composure throwing strikes," general manager Theo Epstein said. "We're proud of him. We couldn't have asked for more from him today."Boston had a 3-1 lead in the game going into the seventh inning and were only five or six outs a...

A Bullpen Massacre For The Yankees Over The Red Sox
    2008-04-17 04:31:00
Let me begin this rather short Thursday morning post by giving you the score of the Yankee-Red Sox game from last night, inning by inning. After 1, it was 3-1 NY, after 2, it was 3-2 NY, and after 3, it was still 3-2. During the fourth, things began to get out of hand for starter Buchholz, PEMANENTLY. At least for the night. The Sox scored 1 in the top of the frame to tie the game at 3 but New York chased Clay with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Buch had thrown 85 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings. NOT ACCEPTABLE. So after 4 complete, it was 7-3 Bad Guys. But the Red Sox never gave up (that's why we love them!) and scored 6 in the top of the fifth, but the Yankees came up with another 4 spot off of terrible, at least for this appearance, Julian Tavarez, and led 11-9. Boston's scoring was finished for the night, and the Yankees added yet another 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to conclude the night's run tally. Mike Timlin was the 8th inning "sad sack" pitcher and for the ...

    Rich Hill to the bullpen
    2008-04-12 16:22:00
As I suspected and mentioned early yesterday, the Rich Hill to the bullpen nonsense isn’t just because he only threw 75 pitches in his start while the bullpen has been overworked.  He’s there until he pleases Lou and Larry with a better approach.  Until Rich Hill gets more aggressive on the mound, he’ll get a seat in the bullpen, the Cubs said Friday. Hill, who irked manager Lou Piniella and pitching coach Larry Rothschild with a tepid approach in his three-inning start Thursday, will be available in the bullpen Sunday, after which his status will be re-evaluated. “It’s just a matter of being aggressive and attacking hitters. That’s it,” Rothschild said. “It’s really that simple.” With Monday being a day off, the Cubs will skip Hill’s next turn in the rotation. Ace Carlos Zambrano is to start Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. Piniella said Hill (0-0, 5.00, 2 starts) might start Thu...

Red Sox Beat Tigers DESPITE Their Bullpen
    2008-04-11 04:30:00
It was a night of thrills and chills, some of them unwanted ones, Thursday at Fenway Park. The Red Sox were facing the Tigers, and Tim Wakefield was on the mound. He went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs, one earned and only three hits. His control was not there, however. He gave up 5 (ouch!) walks in those 5 innings and his pitch count was 108. That's a ton of pitches for such a short outing, but he earned the victory. The bullpen could have had a better night, though. Delcarmen followed Wakes, surrendering one run in 1 2/3 innings. Not bad, not good. Okajima was called on to finish the 7th and did it with four pitches, but he was pulled before the 8th inning started, opening up manager Terry "Tito" Francona to all kinds of second guessing if something were to happen. And, Heaven forbid, it almost did. Terry said this after the game..."You don't want to use Okajima's bullets when we've got a big lead," said Francona, mindful of the Yankees' arrival tonight with their arsenal of lefthanded...

Storylines of the Spring....The Bullpen and the Backstops
    2008-02-14 00:30:00
Time to play a little ball. Cubs' pitchers and catchers will have their first workout later today at Fitch Park. Another pitcher made a bold prediction for the upcoming season, but this time it was not Carlos Zambrano. Ryan Dempster told reporters on Wednesday the Cubs will win the World Series this year. Dempster said, "It's like anything, if you believe it you can achieve it." Reports on WGN Radio indicated Kosuke Fukudome will likely report to Mesa early and could join the team on the field as soon as Friday....the other position players are not scheduled to report to Fitch Park until Monday. Paul Sullivan reported on the Brian Roberts trade rumors. According to Sullivan "there has been no movement" on the Cubs being able to obtain Roberts and Jim Hendry is "a little frustrated he wasn't able to get a deal done before the start of Spring Training." Buck Martinez indicated on Wednesday morning the Cubs are still showing interest in Roberts.... With stretching and long toss on the ...

    Rangers Notebook: A Bullpen Primer

Cash Discusses First Base and the Bullpen
    2008-01-06 11:35:00
Anthony McCarron of the NY Daily News Reports: By Brian Cashman's estimation, only three relievers are assured of slots in the Yankee bullpen - Mariano Rivera, Kyle Farnsworth and LaTroy Hawkins. The rest of the pen, Cashman says, is likely to come from the team's pool of young pitchers, who offer the Yanks more affordable options than the relievers remaining on the free agent market. "The pen is a work in progress," Cashman said. "We'll have a lot of competition in spring training. As long as you have quality competing for those spots, that's good. We have guys with a lot of potential. If they're ready now or later, we'll have to see. "For the most part, we like the talent we have against the market at the prices the market is demanding." I still believe that to limit his innings, Joba Chamberlain will be moved to the bullpen late in the season. This will also strengthen the Yankees bullpen going into September and October. With Mo, Joba, Hawkins, Farnsworth and several o...

    When Bullpen Arsonists Strike
    2007-10-14 16:05:00
OK, it won't be a sweep. An epic postseason game turned really ugly in the wee hours this morning, as the old friend Trot Nixon broke a 6-6 tie in the eleventh inning as the Cleveland Indians scored seven runs in the inning and knotted the ALCS at one with a 13-6 win.It was a night when the starting pitchers didn't last until the fifth, and it would be a battle of the bullpens. Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell both hit homers for the Sox in back-to-back fashion, and Grady Sizemore and Jhonny Peralta both connected for Cleveland. At first the Red Sox pen did a fine job. Manny Delcarmen gave up a run in the sixth that tied it, but Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin and Jonathan Papelbon shut Cleveland down through the tenth inning. Then, Terry Francona had a tough decision to make. At the time I thought it was the right one.At Professor Thom's, the overflow crowd generally moaned at the sight of Eric Gagne coming in for the 11th. He started off strong by fanning Casey Blake. But Sizemore singled and he walked Asdrubal Cabrera on four pitches. This left Francona no choice but to go to Javier Lopez to face pinch-hitter Trot Nixon. As everyone knows, Trot has a tough time with lefties (his lifetime average versus southpaws is .218), but jumped on the first pitch and singled in Sizemore. And it got truly ugly from there. Lopez wound up giving up three runs and Jon Lester gave up a mammoth three-run shot to Franklin Gutierrez to complete the carnage, and send the series back to Cleveland. And at the bar, as it got ugly in Boston, it nearly got ugly at Thom's too. Two obnoxious Yankee fans (or anti-Red Sox fans) nearly started two fights, as the Red Sox throng was pretty pissed off at the turn of events. They got a "We're Still Playing" chant from us. (I'll never get these idiotic fans. They have their choice of 5,000 bars in Manhattan to watch games like this and not have to worry about Sox fans, and yet some can't resist coming in and making trouble with Red Sox fans, many of whom have had more than a few adult beverages. Fortunately, no punches were thrown in either incident, just some pushing and shoving, and the staff acted quickly to diffuse the trouble.)I'd also like anyone to give me one good reason why Eric Gagne should be on the World Series roster should the Sox advance. He couldn't resist doing his tightrope act in Game 1, as the Sox led by 7 in the ninth on Friday and he struggled, and last night he began the inferno that led to a full scale five-alarm fire that wound up evening the series. It was clear last night Tito has no faith in him and only went to him in desperation. I only hope we don't see him with a ball in his hand in any kind of close situation in this postseason again....

Eric GAGNE is a Boston Red Sox bullpen pitcher! And I'm smiling...and I will continue to smile. I hope you are, too! Try it, you'll like it!From the AP.....just now....."With Eric Gagne finally pitching like his old self following two elbow operations and back surgery, the Boston Red Sox agreed Tuesday to acquire the reliever from the Texas Rangers.....Gagne, who has a limited no-trade clause, was asked to give his consent to the trade Tuesday afternoon, a person familiar with the talks said, speaking on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not yet been made.Unidentified major league sources told NESN that Gagne agreed to waive his no-trade clause and agreed to serve as the team's set-up man.Once one of baseball's premier closers, Gagne was to join a Boston bullpen that already has two All-Star relievers: closer Jonathan Papelbon and setup man Hideki Okajima."Sweeter than sugar! Bullpen Contributes To Sox Loss
    2007-06-04 12:19:00
It was a rare faliure of the Boston Red Sox bullpen that allowed the New York Yankees to score a run in the 8th to tie it and another solo run in the 9th that proved to be the eventual winning run. These teams will end up nearly even in their head to head series, as they always do. The Yankees can hit, and that will prevent many losses for them. And the fastball that Paps threw to AROD was a good one that not many players could have hit out. Said the man himself.........."You're just trying to survive right there on 0 and 2 against Papelbon. He's got so many different ways to get you out," Rodriguez said . "The last thing I'm thinking right there is hitting a home run. I just want to take that pitch and drive it somewhere hard."Peter here, and yesterday Paps was throwing the ball well. Some have brought up the fact that Papelbon is not as sharp as he was last lear. Terry Francona confirmed the suspicions I posted earler that the cause is a cutback of his between-starts throwing, an...

    Bullpen Struggles
    2007-04-24 22:37:08
I know it's early in the year and they need to work the kinks out, but I would sy the Minnesota Twins bullpen isn't as sharp as they were last year. As I watch games that are in the late innings, I don't have quite as much confidence in the bullpen as I did last year, I'm actually a little nervous. They have been talked about as one of the best in baseball and as of right now they're not performing like the best. I'm not a big stat guy, but listen to these. The bullpen's combined whip is 1.52, not a great number. Reyes(I got paid!) has an ERA of 8.53, Crain's is 6.43. The others don't have horrible ERAs but not quite good as last year's. Don't get me wrong I still think they are a great bullpen and have shown some great flashes, like Neshek striking out the side this past Saturday. I just hope I can go back to watching games and not needing a pack of Tums....

The Phillies don't have the killer instinct. They don't have a "go for the throat" mentality. In the first two games they had the chance to win. They were up going into the 9th inning on day 1, and choked. They were up in game 2 and choked. They left runners on second and third with no outs. They left runners on base. But that hitter needs to be somebody that's so hungry to win, he'll hit the dirt hard and take out his mother at second base to break up the double play. None of our guys want to do that.Pop-Pop Manuel needs to come charging into the shower spiting fire and brimstone and give them a speech.Do you know what that makes you? Larry?...

General Manager Theo Epstein, Manager Terry Francona and others fended off questions about if the Red Sox would put Papelbon back in the pen. It was...
