Quick Bytes: Scott Starks goes Bowling, Albert Haynesworth signs nothing
    2008-07-16 19:07:09
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). : Cornerback Scott Starks is working with the Clara White Mission to "strike out" homelessness at the Stars and Strikes Celebrity Charity Bowling on Saturday, July 19th.  The event is at the Jax Lane Bowling Center, and will have Rashean Mathis, Maurice Williams, Reggie Nelson, and Gerald Sensabaugh as well as "many more".  More information about the event can be found here.  Kudos to the Jaguars for participating and showing the good side of the team! :Your humble narrator, me, did an interview with the Pigskin Podcast.  If you think I've got a face for radio, do yourself a favor and give it a listen.  I make a very funny pun about Matt Jones.  Well worth the download. : Tennessee Titans defensive tackle and face stomper Albert Haynesworth did not come to a long-term contract extension before yesterday's deadline.  Haynes

Quick Bytes: "Shocking" Matt Jones News
    2008-07-13 19:28:14
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things).   : In the continuing sad saga of the Matt Jones cocaine incident, the Times Union has this to report On advice from an attorney, Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones isn't speaking about being charged with felony possession of cocaine. But his father, Steve Jones, issued a statement to KNWA-TV in Fayetteville, Ark., in which the receiver denied having any responsibility for the six grams of cocaine that were found in a sport-utility vehicle and ultimately led to his arrest early Thursday morning. "Matt is anxious to make a statement and wants to make a statement," said the statement issued to the television station. "His attorney has advised him to not say anything until they have had a chance to speak together. They will release a statement at the appropriate time." I for one hope that Jones will get whatever problems in life behind him and revive his

Quick Bytes: AFC South Injuries Edition
    2008-07-07 23:55:32
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). :The Colts offseason of great concern continues. They've been hit hard by the injury bug, and it isn't even August yet. Strong Safety Bob Sanders and DE Dwight Freeney will probably be starting training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.Colts LB Tyjuan Hagler also will be on the PUP list after a recent pectoral injury he suffered during strength training. Hagler was expected to be a starter this season, and his injury stings, however, the more telling story is Dwight Freeney. He still isn't healthy enough to perform, and although all the Colts' are saying he'll be back for the season opener, I have my doubts. One thing is for certain, he won't be the same beast this year.:Joe Jurevicius may need microfracture surgery in addition to his recent June 30th clean up surgery. Matt Jones may be looking a little bit better to the Browns now, s

Quick Bytes: 25 Days till Training Camp
    2008-07-01 00:41:48
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things).Today is the first day of July, which means the Jacksonville Jaguars are a mere 25 short days until opening training camp!  This also means that there is 25 long days where there is very little Jaguars news, updates, or anything else to hear as far as official reports.  But that certainly does not mean that there's nothing to talk about, just that the reguar media is basically on vacation for the next three weeks or so.: Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline has two articles of note.  His first, the "Breakout Players of 2008" feature is a typical "dead zone" article where potential and speculation reigns over fact.  Facts, of course, are few and far between right now, but whatever: 26. Troy Williamson, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars: He was considered a flop in Minnesota after his selection in the first round of the 2005 draft. He had 79 catches in his first t

    2008-06-24 12:31:03
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things).Happy Tuesday!  I hope you're enjoying the "dead zone" as much as I am.  With all this time on their hands, the sportswriters who decide to not go on vacation (I'm talking to you Peter King) tend to start speculating about the 2008 season.  Some go as far as Dr. Z did and pick the Vikings to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, which is crazy.  Now before we get to the "bytes", there's some stuff in the pipeline for Big Cat Country that you should be aware of.  First off, we're going to have a follow-up interview with Quarterback Paul Smith with his thoughts on minicamp, preparing for training camp, and perhaps an insiders perspective on what's shaking at wide receiver.  There's also going to be some "meta"-Jaguars discussion with a few of the primary journalists who cover the team.Of course, you're also going to see our breakdown of who makes

    2008-06-09 05:00:44
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). What a melancholy weekend for Jaguars fans.  We anxiously awaited the start of minicamp on Friday, and now that it's Monday morning all that is behind us.  We will never be further from seeing our Jaguars on the field than we are today.  It's 65 days until the Jaguars host the Atlanta Falcons for the first preseason game.  Fewer than that are between us and the opening of training camp, but it's still the end of July, and what feels like an eternity away.  The coaches and players have only three more OTA sessions before their "summer break" begins.  Have no fear though, Big Cat Country will be there through it all.All these unpleasing thoughts aside, let's take a quick look at what the rest of the sports media world is saying about the Jaguars after their camp.:  ESPN's Pat Yasinskas spent some time in Jacksonville this weekend.  His

    2008-06-03 16:24:56
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). This is a pretty exciting week here at Big Cat Country.  We've got Clodknocker interviewing the Newest Jaguars, a battle with Colts Fans over at Stampede Blue, and of course Minicamp this weekend!  Remember, if you're going to the practices and would like to report your observations, please drop me a line at BigCatCountry@gmail.com!   :  I participated in two podcasts this week.  First, the great guys at Football Guys had me on to talk about the Jaguars. (of course).  Thanks again to Cecil and Sigmund for having me on.  You can download the podcast here . :  If you liked that, you'll love the full hour I did with JagNation last night on their weekly talk show.  Charlie Bernstein, Alfie, and myself debate and discuss just about everything you can think of about our Jaguars.  I won't toot my own horn here, but I think t

    2008-05-22 05:16:02
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). With Monday and Tuesday's OTA's behind us, let's take a look at what we've observed/learned/speculated so far.:  Monday's OTA: Key Injuries: DE Brian Smith and WR Mike Walker are were both sidelined.  Walker is clearly on an intentionally slow recovery.  Better to let him ease through the summer rather than send him to camp injured.  Brian Smith, on the other hand, will not be a Jaguar on September first.  His injury is simply too nagging and will not allow him a chance to even try out for the roster.  The Jaguars took a risk on Smith and missed.  With all the competition on our roster, it'd be foolish to deny someone who can prove themselves a spot on the team or practice squad for an unknown quantity in Smith.  He clearly wants to play, but his body won't let him. Defensive End Reggie Hayward was absent from both OTA's so far thi

Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars (and other things). This is a weird quick bytes.  There is a bit of an absence of Jaguars news in the rest of the sports-news-o-sphere, but that doesn't mean there's nothing worth reading.  Today's edition attempts to highlight some of the better pieces out there. If you're dying for Jaguars commentary, I implore you to come back at 12:30 EST, where we'll start a new series here at Big Cat Country examining the state of the 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars Roster!:  I almost wrote an entire post today about my frustrations with SI's Peter King and his Monday Morning Quarterback.  This week's incarnation epitomizes my love/hate relationship with Mr. King as he quickly brushes off the nuggets of gold in his article, while spending far too much time spewing nonsense. This, for example, deserves more research and a full article ...I remember talking to San Diego GM A.J. Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars.:  Let's start with another walk down memory lane.  In this piece from deep inside the Sports Illustrated Vault we learn about the life and development of  Tony Boselli and his road to the Jacksonville Jaguars.  This will surprise you, as a youngster, Tony loved to eat: Despite earning minimum wage, he never complained about his paycheck because he was close to the action and close to the food. On his breaks he would devour Big Macs, french fries, milk shakes and apple pies. "One of my managers called one day and said, 'I can't afford him. He's eating more than he's making,' " Tony Sr. says. "So, I transferred Little Tony to the landscaping crew." :  If you don't mind a little math, Big Cat Country favorite NFL Stats breaks down the Ellsberg Paradox and why coaches should go for it more on fourth down.  While the Jaguars are not mentioned directly, the shadow of

Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars.: I don't give him nearly enough credit, but Jaguars.com's Vic Ketchman hit a home run yesterday .  If you're a junkie for this stuff like I am, it's old news, but Vic decided to engage with Mel Kiper Jr. and all the draftnik's who attack the Jaguars for being aggressive in the draft. Let me give you a peek into what would’ve happened had the Jaguars traded for Taylor. He would’ve been a big hit right away. We would’ve built him up big in OTA’s and training camp. Of course, he would’ve played very little in the preseason because he’s a proven star and proven stars are above such mundane pursuits as preseason games. The regular season would’ve rolled around and after about three or four games, some hack of a sportswriter would’ve dared ask Jack Del Rio this question: “Coach, Jason Taylor only has one sack through the first three game

    Quick Bytes: Draft Eve!
    2008-04-25 05:00:12
First off, my apologies for all the downtime over the last two days.  Moving all the SB Nation sites over to version 2.0 took a little more time and resources than we expected.  That said, there's no reason to expect any more outages.  I appreciate your persistence! HAPPY DRAFT EVE: It's finally here, the day before the draft.  This is our last chance to speculate and ponder, for tomorrow the pieces of the 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars come together in their first form.  Sure, we'll have camp cuts and late free-agent acquisitions, but the biggest step toward a Jaguars super bowl comes this weekend. A few quick notes. I'll be attending the NFL Draft with two other fine SB Nation blogs.  Mile High Report and Stampede Blue , Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts respectively, and I will be live blogging from NYC all weekend long.  We'll be at the draft, hopefully scoring interviews and otherwise wrecking havoc with the "real media".  If you remember

Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars.I hope everyone is enjoying the new site!  I know it's a pretty radical change, but it's for the best.  If anyone has any problems, please let me know!   :  Michael Wright of the Florida Times-Union has a fantastic article about the Jaguars executive director of college and pro personnel, Gene Smith.  Gene, as we learn, joined the Jaguars in 1994.  With it being the most misleading period of draft season, I don't know how much to read into the behind the scenes of the draft room, but it's certainly interesting: "Jack, Shack and I make team decisions based on a consensus opinion,'' Smith said. "We listen to our staff, then make the best organizational decision. In reality, I'm only one part of the process, and most of my decision-making is a product of the quality people I work with. I have more responsibilities now, but I've always felt a strong sense of respec

    2008-04-16 20:10:14
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars. : The Florida Times-Union breaks down some draft needs.  Vito Stellino does some good work and finds a few important nuggets.  Jack Del Rio is only ruling out two positions - quarterback and wide receiver - as candidates for the team's first-round pick. "Other than those two positions, we're as open-minded as you can be," Del Rio said. "We have our eyes on certain positions we would like to solidify in the draft." And: New defensive coordinator Gregg Williams could mix in the 3-4 in his plan if the team finds a linebacker who can rush on passing downs. :  The Jaguars released safety Lamont Thompson, who signed with the team last November.  The only safeties on on the roster as of today are Reggie Nelson, Gerald Sensabaugh, and Jamaal Fudge.  This could mean anything, from an imminent switch to Safety for Brian Williams to an indication that the Jaguars think Kenny Phill

Quick Bytes: Monday Morning (sort of) Edition
    2008-04-14 00:55:05
Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars. I know, it's been a week since I ran this.  I had a trip to Florida to attend to, as well as some other odds and ends.  Don't worry though, with less than 14 days till the Draft, we're in this full time from here till Mr. Irrelevant. :  Jaguars This Week and Vic Ketchman ran an interesting idea.  What if the Best Available Player is a cornerback?  The draft is pretty deep in first and early second round cornerbacks and the Jaguars could be sitting there with a corner at the top of their board.  I've got Mike Jenkins, Dominique Rogers-Cromerte, Antoine Cason, Leodis McKelvin, Justin King, and Aqib Talib as all first round guys, there's a good shot one of them is there at 26.  More to come on this... :  Nothing makes me sadder than when a writer that I greatly respect says something terribly foolish.  In this case it's Rich Gosselin of the Dallas Mo

Ugh.  Yeah, your humble narrator is still down with what is probably the bubonic plague.  At least it feels like it.  Still, there's no excuse for an ill writer such as myself to leave his post high and dry.   We've got something very exciting happening right now at SB Nation.  Yes, it's time for the OFFICIAL SB NATION MOCK DRAFT.  Last year I selected Cornerback Leon Hall with the 17th pick, Defensive End Tim Crowder with my second, and Safety Saby Pisitelli with the third.  Not a bad slate of first day picks if you ask me.   Anyhow, starting tomorrow the SB Nation football bloggers will be doing a full mock draft of the first few rounds.  Three picks a day will be posted on our draft site Mocking the Draft, hosted by Matt Miller of New Era Scouting.  Yes, we've got a real live scout and draftnik who will be grading and analyzing our picks!

Quick Bytes: The daily digest of everything you need to know about the Jacksonville Jaguars. Happy Tuesday! Before we get into the news and linky goodness, I've got a little housekeeping.  For many months I've been sitting on a little secret.  This secret involved the future of Big Cat Country, the site I'm sure you've grown to love and cherish.  It's going to get a lot better here in the next few weeks as (hopefully) we transition into Big Cat Country version 2.0!! SB Nation developed an entire new interface, and unlike a lot of site "upgrades", this one is actually better than what it replaces.  Our Baseball Blogs have been the first to change, you can visit Athletics Nation for a sneak peek. I'm pretty excited about it, to say the least. :  The 2008 Jaguars began their Offseason Conditioning Program today.  Confirmed in attendance were Wide Receivers Jerry Porter, Mike Walker and Troy Williamson, Quarterback Cleo Lemon, Cornerback Drayton Florence, and

First off, huge thanks to my Brother for putting together the "logo" for "Quick Bytes".  I enjoyed putting together the "Free Agency Update" posts, and I'm turning that into what should become a daily (posted late at night) series that gives you a one-stop resource for all the Jaguars news and quick commentary.  Sitting around and refreshing your screen all day waiting for feature pieces is frustrating, Quick Bytes will give you a quick fix.   Without further adu... : Quinn Gray says he's about to become a Texan.  For veteran minimum, according to Pro Football Talk.  I'm stunned, no shocked that the Jaguars situation at quarterback is so locked down that Quinn Gray feels that going to Houston and still having the same distant shot at starting as he would have in Jacksonville.  Even if the Texans trade Sage Rosenfels, he's a number two getting lousy money.

    2007-05-30 18:18:14
The Broncos returned to the practice field Tuesday for the first day of Team Camp, phase two of teh team's OTAs.  While there wasn't a whole lot of news on the field to speak about, there was plenty off of it.  I wrote about the David Kircus situation yesterday but certainly wasn't alone.  You can read about it HERE, HERE and HERE.  I'll have more thoughts about Shanny's polygraph machine TONIGHT on MHR Radio  One bright spot on the practice field was the return of Matt Lepsis to Left Tackle.  Lepsis is still recovering from a knee injury that cost him the second half of the 2006 season.  Lepsis spoke with the meida yesterday for the first time in years, complying with Roger Goodell's kinder, gentler player-media policy that requires all players be open to interviews. Lepsis admitted to being nervous talking to the media about his recovery, but noted it felt good to get back on the field for the first time in 7 months.  There will b

Some of the story's I am reading while drinking my morning coffee --  After years of playing in domed stadiums, Broncos CB Dre Bly is looking forward to a snowy winter in Denver.  If you want to know who has the best CB tandem in the League, ask Camp Bailey and Dre Bly, they'll be happy to tell you.  Travis Henry is spending his first off-season with the Broncos picking up the intricacies of the zone blocking scheme.  Warrick Holdman is hoping to ditch his number the first chance he gets.  The Chiefs made a trade, but it didn't involve who you think.  Herm Edwards is already getting feisty and it's only May, but the Trent Green situation isn't a distraction.  Yea, right. The search continues for a new home for the Chargers. The Raiders have found a replacement for Randy Moss, I guess. Ahman Green had to pay a little more than he expected for his #30 after joining the Texans.

Bit and Bytes returns after a brief hiatus, with a new look.  Well, maybe not, but since we are in the off-season, I'll put them here, and include all teams from the AFC West.   Think of it as your source for headlines rergarding the Broncos and our fiercest rivals.  Without further adieu -- Denver Broncos Jim Saccomano, the Broncos VP of Marketing, Has a new book that might be worth checking out. Mark Kiszla says Jay Cutler will be a Pro Bowl QB in 2007. The news that the cause of Damien Nash's death is still unknown is a few days old now, but it bears mentioning that the only thing possibly worse than losing a loved one is not knowing how the hell it happened.  It is said that the death is of "cardiac origin", which would make sense since when you die your heart stops.  Here's hoping the family can find some peace soon.
