Scottsdale, AZ--It didn't take long for it to occur to those on hand for the Cubs' Cactus League opener against the Giants that some sort of Faustian pact with the devil was in play.
Ryan Theriot went 3-3. Mike Fontenot went 2-3 with a homer and 3 RBIs. Ryan Dempster only gave up one homerun in two innings pitched. Even Matt Murton, Ronny Cedeno, and Koyie Hill managed to get on base. In the end, after using more than 25 players, the Cubs bested the Bonds-less Giants 12-6.
"I guess we're really looking at one of two scenarios," Cubs Broadcaster Pat Hughes said. "Either the Giants are just that bad, or the Cubs have sold their souls to Old Scratch. Right now I'm leaing towards the "souls" theory."
While Cubs fans were thrilled to see Derrek Lee and Fukudome go 1-1 with a total of 3 RBIs between them, and to see top prospect Felix Pie go 2-2 with 3 runs scored, some couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more at play.
