    Black and white artwork is a whole subject onto itself, I simply love it, black and white are the true extreme colors, and they call for strong imagery and subject matter for them to unvail their true power. Art that is black and white seems to call for something from its viewer - calling for our input to add to its raw, blunt character. Black and white artwork impresses our retinas in such a direct way, our consciusness, our emotions...and our memories awaken in the most profound manner when we see these strikingly contrast colors. There is one well known effect of using black and white in artwork, most of us know of this quality from its presence in photography. This effect is age, the past, black and white has always been used to relay the impression of the past - an earlier time.     Arabic Calligraphy Course

    If you've been to Cafe Clock in Fez, you will have seen the beautiful Arabic calligraphy that adorns the walls in the courtyard and in the library upstairs. This is work of talented artist, photographer and calligrapher, Si Mohamed Charkaoui. Lumen finds out about a course he'll be running later this month.'Arabic calligraphy creates a balance between the black and white, the positive and negative space. This symmetry, depending on our spiritual equilibrium, assists in creating peace within us', explains Si Mohamed. He will be leading a 6-week course to enable participants to discover both traditional and modern calligraphy writing tools, pigments and supports, as well as learning its importance in the development of the Arabic language, so taking a historial journey through Arab civilisation.Comprising six two-hour sessions on Sunday afternoons, the workshop will take place at Cafe Clock, the Fez medina's elegant, vibrant and cosy new meeting place. The Cafe's creator and proprietor, Mike Richardson, and the cultural co-ordinator, Jess Stephens, are delighted to inaugurate Cafe Clock's cultural programme with this aesthetic and scholastic course presented by Mohamed Charkaoui.To enrol, visit the Cafe between 3-5pm on Sunday 13 January.
