    BACKGROUNDRudy Giuliani became "America's Mayor" in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Now, he's attempting to parlay the fame and recognition that followed into the Republican nomination.Giuliani became a US Attorney in 1970, and was appointed by President Reagan as Associate Attorney General in 1981. During his time in the Justice Department, he prosecuted a number of high profile cases, including Marc Rich's tax evasion and several leaders of New York crime families. Initially a Democrat, Giuliani became an independent and later a registered Republican. In 1989, he lost a narrow mayoral race, but came back to defeat David Dinkins in 1993. His tenure as mayor is one of controversy and success. He worked with the New York Police Department to reduce crime during his two terms and oversaw a revitalization of the city's business community.     BACKGROUNDFormer Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore is looking to become the ninth president born in that state, though he'd be the first since Woodrow Wilson.Gilmore served in the US Army as a counterintelligence agent in West Germany during the mid-1970s. After returning home, he received a law degree from the University of Virginia. He was elected the state's attorney general in 1993 and became governor in 1997. Though he is not as associated with 9/11 as Rudy Giuliani, Gilmore was serving as governor when the Pentagon was attacked. He was barred from seeking a second consecutive term as governor by Virginia law, so from 2001-2002, Gilmore served as chairman of the Republican National Committee. With minimal name recognition, money, media attention, and low standing in most polls, Hunter is among many long shots in the Republican field.Hunter served in US Army in the Vietnam War from 1969-1971 before returning home and earning his law degree. In 1980, he mounted a successful bid to upset of Democrat Lionel Van Deerlin, aided by a strong national performance by presidential candidate Ronald Reagan. He moved to Alaska and was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives, eventually serving as speaker of the body. After an unsuccessful bid for the US House, Gravel mounted a primary challenge of Democratic Senator Ernest Gruening in 1968. Following his surprising upset, Gravel served in the US Senate until 1981, when he lost in another primary challenge to a Gruening grandson.
