Canon EOS 1000D Digital SLR Review
    2008-07-09 20:52:00
With the popularity of the EOS 400D, this model isn't going to lose any points with it being the younger, prettier, thinner and more intelligent sibling. The great performance results I achieved from the camera coupled with Canon's notorious ease of use means the EOS 1000D is perfect for its target audience.I don't like the material used on the grip, I think it makes the camera feel cheaper than what it really is. I don't like the fact you can't use a remote release with it or the absence of spot metering. For an entry model, it's also very expensive. It's more expensive than the higher spec, albeit older, 400D and 450D and more expensive than the new Olympus E-420 and Pentax K200D. It's bound to be expensive when it's first released, but this is way too high to stand up to Canon's claim of making DSLR photography more affordable and accessible. I've marked the Overall score down for this very reason. more : ephotozine

    Canon EOS 5D MkII - 3D - 4D or 7D
    2008-07-09 16:59:00
Rumours have been around for a while now regarding the update to the middle aged Canon 5D.There have been many stories circulating that this camera may take the form of a 3D, 4D or the 7D. I wouldn't be surprised if a 6D has been mentioned somewhere but from what I hear the 7D is the favourite. So far though, the reality of a successor to one of the greatest cameras ever built is still the stuff of myth.Possible 5D MKII Specifications :- 16 MP full frame CMOS sensor- Weather sealing same as 1Ds Mark III- Dual Digic III with all-new “CXR” NR system.- 14 bit A/D conversion- ISO 12800 (C.F. up to 25600)- Reported 1 2/3 stop sensitivity improvement- All-new 29-point TTL CMOS sensor.- Micro lens fine adjustment for up to 14 lenses- 300,000 exposure shutter durability- 6.0 fps- 3.0″ LCD 922,000 pixels- EOS Integrated Cleaning System- Live View - Improved on the current 450DThe memory for the camera is still uncertain. With the 5D using Compact Flash it is a safe bet the assume that the

    Canon LPE5 Digital Camera Battery
    2008-07-09 15:30:00
The Canon LPE5 digital camera battery is the battery you will require if you are the lucky owner of the new Canon EOS 450D or the soon to be available EOS 1000D.Whilst developing these new camera models, Canon recognised photographers require their camera to take 100s more shots before the battery dies. With this in mind the capacity was increased, without increasing the size or weight of the battery too much. This enabled them to keep the size and overall weight of the camera to a minimum. At 1050mAh, the Canon LP-E5 is around twice the capacity of the Canon NB2L battery used in the earlier EOS 350D and EOS 400D.

Canon's latest entry level DSLR is the EOS 450D.A superb camera, bristling with features, enough to satisfy all from the novice to the keen amateur.Canon's EOS 450D is an update of the successful EOS 400D, first launched in August 2006. Canon EOS XSi (450D) Review
    2008-07-05 13:05:00
One size does not fit all. No one camera can be all things to all people. Not one brand, not one model within that brand. At this time there at least a half dozen cameras from the majors, including Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Pentax that will meet the needs of the DSLR newcomer or someone working on a tight budget. Frankly, there are likely no significant image quality or feature advantages to the Canon XSi that make it a must-have over comparably priced models from the other leading camera companies.Indeed, one area where Canon (as well as Nikon) have a challenge is with their lack of in-body image stabilization. Canon has lenses in all price ranges with IS built in, but it's not in their bodies, as it is with Pentax, Olympus and some others. Time will tell if this will become a marketing issue for these two companies. But, if you're someone that is either partial to Canon cameras, or already have a higher end model, a set of lenses, and are seeking another camera body that's small and

Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens Field Test
    2008-06-20 09:57:00
Though those outside the realms of sports/nature photography and portraiture may have little use for the unique capabilities that the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM offers, initial evaluations suggest that Canon has (not surprisingly) created nothing less than an optically superior lens here. The background control and shooting speed options afforded by an f/2.0 maximum aperture combined with the lens's moderate working distance are the stuff that great images in sports journalism, especially, are made with. With stock of the 200mm f/2.0 just beginning to roll out in earnest and the Olympics just around the corner, we can probably plan on seeing more than a few of these babies on the sidelines in Beijing this summer. As noted in the beginning of this evaluation, the stop of speed that the latest 200mm gains over the next tier of its competitors is a pivotal one, putting this lens in a different financial and functional strata. For many users and uses, there are plenty of great f/2.8 lenses in the

First Take : Canon EOS 1000D
    2008-06-11 11:08:00
At the heart of the camera lies a 10.1-megapixel sensor, which is supported by the DIGIC III image processor. Into its third generation, the chip has won praises from professionals and amateurs alike, so we guess the image quality should be on par with that of the EOS 450D, since both utilize the same APS-C-sized sensor and image processor.Bundled with the body is the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 image stabilizer (IS) kit lens. The IS feature was found only in the "L" series of professional lenses in the past, but now casual shooters can also enjoy its benefits. However, we think having IS in lenses is a double-edged sword (see more in Downside). The Live View implementation is a good way to help those used to framing their pictures on a compact digicam screen. The Japanese imaging giant's rationale is that this will ease the transition process from point-and-shoot units. It is coupled with autofocus and we think this is really handy. Though not a new function (the Sony Alpha A350 and Olympus E-420

Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS / Kiss F) Preview
    2008-06-10 08:24:00
When Canon launched the EOS 300D back in 2003 it was widely regarded as the first affordable digital SLR and secured Canon a seemingly indomitable number-one spot in the market. Since then the 'small' Canon has gone through three further iterations and the current model - the EOS 450D - offers a feature set and image quality that could only have been dreamed about five years ago (and at a price point well below the 300D's). However, the competition haven't been idle spectators and have recently launched a number of de-spec'ed cameras that have redefined the entry level segment and undercut the EOS 450D in the DSLR hierarchy.Canon has now responded to this mounting pressure by launching a new model one tier below the 450D in its current lineup - the EOS 1000D. It shares bits and pieces with Rebels gone by and, depending from which angle you look at it, the new model is either a stripped down 450D or a 'reheated' 400D. It's a lower specification camera than the 450D, by every measure you

Canon EF 24-105/4L IS USM Lens Review
    2008-06-05 09:59:00
The EF 24-105/4L IS USM is a very nice lens indeed. On a full frame DSLR like the EOS 5D, it has an ideal focal length range for a single general purpose lens, with applications ranging from landscapes to portraits. It can be used wide open at f4 and still yield very sharp images and with the 3 stops of stabization which the IS system provides, it's useful for low light work as well. It can yield sharp images at 1/3s at 24mm and 1/12s at 105mm. What's somewhat less impressive is the noticeable vignetting and distortion, especially at 24mm. This can easily be corrected digitally of course, but it's always better not to have it there in the first place. If the lens had been designed to eliminate vignetting and distortion though, it would probably have ended up much larger, heavier and more expensive and some of the zoom range might have had to be lost. If that's the case, the compromise is worth it.On an APS-C DSLR like the EOS 40D the focal length range is a bit less useful, being simil

Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens Review
    2008-06-03 09:25:00
The Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens' Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) driven AF is extremely fast and very accurate. AI Servo tracking of in-motion subjects is definitely a strength of this lens. The internal-focusing lens does not extend and does not rotate the front element - which does not matter in regards to filter use as this lens does not accept front-mount filters (even if they could be attached, they would cost a fortune). A fixed-size lens is nicer to use than one that changes size - most fixed focal length lenses do not extend. FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing is enabled. A 2-position focus limiter switch allows the shortest focusing distance to be limited to 11.5' (3.5m) to infinity (can reduce AF lock time in certain situations). Full range focusing is of course an option - from 6.2' (1.9m) to infinity. The Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens includes a Focus Preset feature. Set the Focus Preset to a specific distance - when your shooting needs require that specific distance,

Canon Digital Rebel XSi Digital Camera Review
    2008-06-03 09:13:00
The XSi is more of an evolution than a revolution; the new features it adds over previous Digital Rebels are useful (and generally well executed), but none of them add that much to the experience of using the camera. The live view makes point-and-shooters feel more at home, but focusing in that mode is a pain, as the camera has to flip the mirror back up to meter. The increase in resolution is also nice, but 10 to 12 megapixels is not a huge leap. And the optical image stabilization on the kit lens is definitely a good addition, but there are plenty of other SLRs that offer similar features. So, nothing in the XSi screams out for XTi users to upgrade. But little changes aren't a problem if the original package was good, and the XTi was a great camera. So the XSi is a great camera as well; it is easy to use and shoots great photos. It may not be a mold-breaking revolution, but it's a good upgrade to the XTi and a great camera in its own right. Likes- Big, bright 3-inch LCD screen- Great

Camera Shoot-out: Sony HDR-FX1 versus Canon Vixia HV30
    2008-06-02 12:40:27
I don't know about you, but I have been eagerly awaiting the video revolution. When the first consumer videocamera came out I thought, this is really an improvement on film: you don't have to wait for the lab, the viewfinder shows you exactly what the final image is going to look like. This is going to change the industry! But here we are more than two decades later and only now are high definition videocameras finally coming onto the market at a reasonable price point. I don't know what derailed the revolution, most likely it was the high margins that all the new gear commanded when it first came out. The revolutionaries got fat and complacent. But in the last two years some low cost, high quality gear managed to break through the party apparatus and is now in the hands of consumers. For this shoot-out we are going to compare one of the old guard, high margin video cameras (the Sony HDR-FX1) to a truly revolutionary camera (the Canon Vixia HV30). How do I despise thee Sony, let

Canon Cross Media Demo is RUNNING at Drupa...IT IS ALIVE!
    2008-05-30 01:56:46
The trip over to Dusseldorf was uneventful?.EXCEPT for my luggage being lost for a day and a half and the seat on the airplane being too small for me. That was a pain, but the luggage showed up and the colleagues that I was working with in the Canon booth were very pleased that I could change into some clean clothes. Spent most the first two days setting the cross media demo up and practicing with the team assigned to the area. There were a few bumps and bruises along the way and it is finally running like a top this morning. The biggest pain was getting the audio running on the server (which we never did). Had something to do with Windows Server 2003 and the audio chip. Eventually, we brought in a XP machine and used it as the client to run the demo and NOW we can hear the sound of the interactive video message that was included in the demo. That got everyone?s attention. And the VDP posters that we printed from the demo looked great. They all love the demo! Coming to shows like this

    Canon EOS 5D Review
    2008-05-28 03:19:00
As I said at the beginning of this review, the 5D is more of a big brother to the EOS 20D than the little brother of the 1Ds Mk II or 1D MkII N. The 1Ds Mk II has everything - a 16.7MP full frame sensor, full weather sealing, 4fps continuous shooting, a built in vertical grip, a high capacity battery, the ability to use both CF and SD cards etc. However it will cost you $7200. The 1D MkII N has "only" an 8.2MP 1.3x sensor, but it has full weather sealing, a built in vertical grip, CF and SD card capability, high capacity battery and it can shoot at 8.5 fps for 48 frames (high resolution JPEGs, 22 RAW frames). However the price is somewhat lower at just under $4000. The EOS 5D has a 12.8MP full frame sensor (less than the 1Ds but more than the 1D) , 3fps, no weather sealing, only takes CF cards, has a smaller battery and no built in grip - but the price is just under $3000.The 1Ds MkII is the clear choice for the professional photographer who must have the very highest possible image qu

Canon EOS 450D Digital SLR Review
    2008-05-23 21:02:00
Canon EOS 450D: Build and handlingThe low end SLRs and DSLRs from Canon have always strived to be the smallest and lightest. The EOS 450D is the same at a welterweight 475g compared to some rivals such as the Nikon D60 at 495g or the more portly Sony Alpha A200 at 545g. It's by no means the lightest, though with the Olympus E-420 coming in at a sprightly 395g.The lack of weight is thanks to the size and to the materials used to build the unit. The insides aren't metal like you'd find on an intermediate model but it's nevertheless well made. It feels solid enough and ergonomically, the contours fit nicely to the hands. The shutter release is sat in a small cut out part of the grip to fit the index finger better and the mock leather found on the hand grip can also be found on the back for the thumb to grip. This is to aid fast one handed shooting and whilst it's possible to do this, it's not the most convenient way to take pictures. The screen is bright and has a new layout with large ic

    Lens Test: Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 EF-S IS
    2008-05-22 07:25:00
An 88-400mm equivalent, this is Canon's longest EF-S (digital only) zoom, and roughly the low-cost digital alternative to its 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L full-frame "white" image-stabilized zoom that's so hot with pros. At $280, street, this 55-250mm is by far Canon's most favorably priced IS tele zoom, with the only glass close to it a 70-300mm IS lens that streets for roughly $550.Not actually paired in a kit with Canon's 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS starter lens (yet), this is the system's de facto kit telezoom. It's squarely targeted at intermediate DSLR shooters who feel hemmed in by the 18-55mm and crave something longer. While most comparable digital tele-zooms that start at 55mm go to only 200mm (i.e., the Nikon, Sigma, and Tamron), Canon reaches out to 250mm.This lens replaces the 55-200mm full-framer, a late film-era optic, and boasts a new optical design incorporating a UD element for controlling color fringing and a simpler, less costly IS system. The IS mechanism (the same as in the 18-5

Camera Test: Canon EOS Rebel XSi
    2008-05-22 07:16:00
Six, eight, ten, twelve --the Rebel line continues up the megapixel count to the fourth-generation EOS Rebel XSi. But the 12.2MP XSi ($800, street, body only; $900 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Canon EF-S IS lens) is a lot more than just another deuce worth of dots. Enough upgrades to performance and convenience have been added -- some trickle-downs from the pro-level EOS-1D series -- that the XSi qualifies far more as an enthusiast model than an entry-level one. Here are five reasons why.1. Great image qualityThe XSi uses a new Canon CMOS sensor with extra-large microlenses, plus 14-bit A/D conversion rather than 12-bit. Performance in the Pop Photo Lab was impressive: It scored Excellent image quality throughout its ISO 100-1600 range, based on Excellent resolution (2265 lines average), Excellent color accuracy, and noise levels that ranged from Very Low at ISO 100 to Moderately Low at ISO 1600. What really wowed us, though, was the consistency of its test results. At ISO 800 and 1600, res

Canon EF 70-200mm 1:2.8 L IS USM review
    2008-05-17 09:12:00
The EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM was introduced way back in August 2001, supplementing (but not replacing) the non-stabilized 70-200mm F2.8 L USM in Canon's highly regarded telephoto lineup. This is a lens which can truly be described as a professional workhorse, with robust build (including dust and moisture resistance), wide F2.8 maximum aperture, fast and silent ultrasonic autofocus motor, and optical image stabilization for hand-holding at slow shutter speeds. The optical design is somewhere on the far side of complex; it features 23 elements in 18 groups, with 4 UD elements to provide compensation for chromatic aberration. According to Canon, this gives a 'high-resolution, high-contrast optical capability', as demanded from a lens which needs to perform all day, every day in the hands of professional photographers across a wide range of subjects and conditions. The 70-200mm is an EF lens, and has presumably been designed from the outset for optimum performance on Canon's professional

Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D and DPP 3.4.1.1
    2008-05-15 08:49:00
Canon have released an update for DPP (Digital Photo Professional), their RAW image converter.Interestingly, the compatibility information in the DPP 3.4 help file mentions that it's compatible with the Digital Rebel XS/1000D. This is interesting because there currently is no Digital Rebel XS/1000D!Back in March of this year I got some information from what I can only call "an anonymous source" (not because I can't say who it was, but because I don't know who it was!) concerning such a camera which the source suggested might become available in May of 2008. There were no specifications suggested, just a name, the EOS1000D. I didn't pass this on because I don't like to spread rumors with no confirmation and just a name isn't really much information. Anyone can suggest anything, but without at least two sources (or one source that I know) I'm not inclined to pass them on. Nevertheless I've been on the lookout for further confirmation that Canon might have something new coming along calle

Canon EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM Review
    2008-05-12 11:32:00
The EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM is clearly the winner when it comes to a combination of quality and convenience. The ability to zoom out to 400mm makes it much more useful for situations where action can be close or far away, for example in sports photography. In such situations taking the time to add a TC to a prime lens can mean you miss critical action. It is a stop slower than the 300/4L at 300mm, and that may be it's only major drawback when comparing the lenses. The prime lens allows the use of faster shutter speeds. Of course the 100-400IS a little more expensive and a little heavier, but that's only to be expected in a zoom. With a 1.4x TC it produces quite good image quality, though unless you play tricks by masking off pins, it won't AF on most EOS bodies. Even with a 2x TC the image is usable, though manually focusing at f11 isn't particularly easy and the lens really need to be stopped down a stop (to f16) for better image quality. What about the 70-200/2.8L IS USM and 1.4x a

    Canon EOS Rebel XSi Review
    2008-05-12 11:15:00
We kicked off our session in Auto, with maximum JPEG size (4272 x 2848 pixels) and in burst mode. Here the camera handles all the settings—focus, white balance and ISO; you just adjust the zoom and fire away. And blast away the XSi certainly does. This D-SLR is far more responsive than recent Sony and Pentax models reviewed. Canon added its latest processor (DIGIC III) previously found only on much more expensive editions as well as a new AF sensor. The nine-point system also has one cross type in the center. All of this adds up to a camera that feels like it’s ready to explode when you put it into burst mode. Press the shutter and you’ll know what we mean.Canon gives the XSi a rating of 3.5 frames per second, and this was pretty close to the conclusion reached by our test results. More importantly, you can zip off 45 top-quality JPEGs or six RAW files before it takes a breather (with the flash off, of course). Again, these are stats that are much better than our recently reviewe
