    Our Big Trip Part 6- Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands and Arches National Parks

Day 36- Sunday, July 20: We awoke well-rested in a campground just a stone’s throw from Bryce Canyon National Park, so named for Ebenezer Bryce, who, upon seeing it, called it “One hell of a place to lose a cow.” Bryce is not actually a canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters. It resides much higher than any of the other parks in Utah, so it is much cooler. We anticipated teeming masses of tourists, but were pleasantly surprised. During the mid-morning we drove along the road that runs aside the rims of the amphitheaters and got a bird’s eye view. Then after lunch we strapped on our hiking boots and hiked along the Peek-A-Boo Trail, which runs down from the lip into the heart of the largest amphitheater and then back up. It was about a 5 1/2 mile walk, and the path rose and fell sharply. It was a strenuous hike, but it was made easier because it was overcast and not too hot, and even rained on us about a third of
