Yes, Johannesburg winters [...]

    Cape Town Car Rental
    2008-05-10 04:20:59
In my personal opinion the best way to travel is by car. So when my friend, Greg, and I decided to go on a trip down to Cape Town we decided that car rental would be the first on our ”must-do” list. We opted for a small hatchback to zip around on our trip from Cape Town to Hermanus and back to the Cape winelands. On the road We wanted to go to Hermanus for two reasons. First and foremost to go visit my old and dear friend Michelle, and secondly for the Whale festival. The drive from Cape Town to Hermanus is beautiful. Scenic views as you drive Sir Lowry’s mountain pass filled with flowers, then small farmhouses and the occasional shop where you can buy some of the fresh farm produce that you would never be able to get in the city. So we stopped at Aunt Millie’s Farm Stall. Known for her fresh home cooked pies we of course couldn’t resist stopping for a bite first. While sitting in the car savouring one of Aunt Millie’s notorious pies, we were surrounded by the most breath-ta

    Cape Daisy
    2008-05-09 04:57:35
Cape DaisyOsteospermum (oss-tee-oh-SPUR-mum)Synonym: African DaisyThis is one of the annuals I have been planting this week. This year as been funny since I have had more requests for annuals then ever before. It truly has been the year of the annual. I don’t mind because annuals always add a lot of color to the garden. I hope to take some more pictures of the different flowers I have been planting. Dahlias, Impatiens, Petunias, Marigolds, Salvia, Cleome and Begonias to name some of the species for this year. Both of these are from the 'Crescendo' series. This 'Crescendo Orange' and the top flower is 'Crescendo Primrose'Cape Daisy is a nice annual for masses or containers. I like them since they aren’t too fussy and seem to give good color throughout the season. I found that they need full sun and well drained soil. If they start to slow down blooming some light shearing maybe in order. They benefit from deadheading (removing the spent flowers). These plants have been in full bloom

    ABC Wednesday - Cape Tulip
    2008-04-30 04:47:58
ABC WednesdayCape TulipMoraea ochroleuca(mor-ah-EE-uh) (ock-roh-LEW-kuh)If you are here for Wordless Wednesday skip down to the next post. Thanks for visiting.Last week I was in no shape to post for ABC Wednesday. It snapped a streak of posts that started with the first ‘A’. I am participating again today with some ‘O’range pictures. This first flower is a beauty. I shot this at Wave Hill Gardens in the Bronx a few weeks ago and was originally going to use it for my ‘M’ post. It fits in ‘O’ since the species name is ochroleuca and it is orange colored. It is native of South Africa and is known as the South African Iris or Cape Tulip. You will have to grow it in pots unless you are in a frost-free location.Speaking of frost we are under a frost warning * rolleyes * here in Connecticut for tonight and tomorrow night. I am sick of that. I want to start planting. These are some orange Tulips I saw on Sunday when I was buying some trees. They were a nice shape and color. There

Cape Town Car Rental Tips To Get You Started
    2008-04-01 09:59:37
Why is a Cape Town car rental the most economical and convenient way to see the city, particularly if you are traveling together with a partner, family or group? For starters, public transportation around Cape Town and the surrounding area is at best time-consuming and at worst, downright dangerous. The costs of taking private taxis or arranging guided tours quickly mount up for larger parties. In addition, tour company timetables may not fit your schedule. For all these reasons, Cape Town car rentals make the most sense for a Cape Town vacation.6 Tips to Get You StartedDrivers license Any person who will be driving the rental car will need an international driver's license if they do not have a South African one. In addition, the international license must be written in English. Requesting additional authorized drivers may incur extra charges.Insurance Read the small print carefully. Third party insurance is compulsory. Comprehensive insurance will cost extra and you will still be lia

A Case Study of a Potential 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Cape Town
    2008-03-09 22:19:00
With International Olympic Committee (IOC) expected to announce the selection of Cape Town, South Africa to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the American broadcast networks must recognize how this decision might impact them. First, the general issues of American network coverage of the event will be stated. Next, the challenges of holding the games in South Africa will be mentioned, as well as its direct effect on the American media. Finally, a strategy for obtaining exclusive television rights and broadcasting the event will be developed. General issues of American network coverage of the Olympic Games Television was first introduced to the Olympics in the Berlin Games 1936, where footage was broadcasted locally throughout the city reaching approximately 162,000 residents, (Toohey, 2007). The Olympics were unique in that respect as major sports leagues were fearful that new technologies would negatively affect attendance. Perhaps the reason this was not an issue was the I

Travel Postcard - 48 hours in Cape Town
    2008-02-15 16:09:00
If the weather forecast is hot and sunny, hire a car for the 40 km (25 mile) ride to Boulder's Beach, stopping along the way to watch the whales cavort in False Bay, before arriving at your destination and mingling with penguins. Or stay in the city centre and soldier on towards the Castle of Good Hope (Buitenkant and Strand streets), a pentagonal fortification built by the Dutch between 1666-1679 and South Africa's oldest surviving building. Try to catch a ghostly glimpse of Anne Barnard, the castle's former first lady whose apparition is said to haunt certain sections of the ramparts, with daily guided tours offered to the dungeons and torture rooms.

    Cape Town
    2007-10-26 21:03:00
Cape Town (Afrikaans and Dutch: Kaapstad; Xhosa: iKapa) is the third most populous city in South Africa, forming part of the metropolitan municipality of the City of Cape Town. It is the provincial capital of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. Cape Town is famous for its harbour as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Often regarded as one of the world's most beautiful cities because of its geography, Cape Town is the most popular South African destination for tourism.Cape Town was originally developed as a victualling station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East more than 200 years before the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope. It was the largest city in South Africa until the growth of Johannesburg and Durban.According to the 2001 Census, the city has a population of 2.95 million. Cape Town's land area of 2,499 square kilometres (965 sq mi) is larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density of 1,158 people per square kilometre (2,999/sq mi). Cape Town is town twinned with Nice in France and Haifa in Israel.

    Cape Town targets cruise liners
    2007-10-19 11:51:00
Already famous for being one of the most beautiful tourist cities in the world, Cape Town has unveiled its ambition to become one of the best passenger cruise liner destinations in the world, in hope of securing a slice of the lucrative US$29-billion market. The city seeks to benchmark itself against the likes of Miami, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne and even Auckland, which have all developed as favoured cruise liner destinations."The time could be ripe to re-establish Cape Town as one of the great passenger liner destinations of the world by promoting itself and the southern African region as a base for destination cruises," said the city councillor in charge of economic development and tourism, Simon Grindrod. He said he was disappointed, however, that Cape Town and southern Africa had largely failed to benefit from the fact that cruise liner operators were seeking new destinations.Areas such as the east coast of Australia and New Zealand have become popular cruise liner destination bas

Movie Review - Dean Cain Proves He Doesn't Need a Cape to Fly as an Actor
    2007-06-13 07:12:57
My personal movie tastes are varied, and my satisfaction is not necessarily dependent on typical "good movie" standards. I'm forgiving of what some may call flaws, errors, substandards, story holes, weak plots, campy acting or predictability. My main criteria is basic: does the movie engross me, hold my attention, stay with me and most importantly, entertain me? If I answer yes, then it's a good movie. It's simple. Now to my main point. Dean Cain's performance in the recent Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness, engrossed me. I was absorbed. There is something about the sadness he so richly portrayed that is staying with me. I didn't want to take my eyes off of the scenes that he appeared in. For two hours, I sat entertained. I think Mr. Cain was terrific, and a great fit for this role. I can't imagine anyone else playing the part. Was the movie itself good? I enjoyed it. Was it well directed? I stayed involved and forgot I was watching TV for a couple hours.

At India's Cape with Good Hope
    2007-04-10 08:01:00
Many years ago, when I would hear about Kanyakumari, it used to fascinate me. My god, you can see a confluence of three oceans here... I used to think, amazed but strangely, it never dawned on me that visiting the place could ever be a possibility. And then, many years later, I heard a casual reference of Kanyakumari from my husband whose family is settled in Trivandrum. I learnt that Kanyakumari is about three hours away from my in-laws home. I was excited as I asked Sujith if we could go there. "Yes we can try to," was the casual response. I was surprised to hear no excitement and no awe of the place. It was only later when I learnt that going to Kanyakumari is a routine for these people and they are no tourists there.Though they often plan a vacation to Kanyakumari, they were little amused by my fascination towards the place. However, a trip was arranged and it was supposed to be a three night and 2 day visit. Thanks to my mother-in-law's job at the Census Directorate, our stay was arranged at the Central Government Employees Holiday Inn.Oceans, Shopping and TranquilityWe, my father and mother-in-law and my sister-in-law with her two little daughters reached Kanyakumari towards evening after brief visits to the temples at Pallugal (my mother-in-law's family deity) and Tirchendur (I will write more about this in the posts to come). As our car approached the road to our Guest House, I saw and heard the waves welcoming me. From a distance, the road we were taking seemed to abruptly end somewhere. But of course, the concrete road gave way to the beach.First things first, a visit to the beach was an absolute must before settling down. So the car was parked and we walked (I almost rushed) to the beach. Suddenly, there I stood overlooking an expanse of water ... I looked towards my feet and was quiet for a moment. I was standing on the Indian Ocean with the water from the Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal softly caressing my feet.It was amazing ... the sheer creation of nat
