    2008-07-15 10:57:13
    1. HistoryLast year end of May, Sadiq Alam and Tiel Aisha Ansari jointly hosted the 1st Edition of Online Sufi Poetry Carnival. The idea of a Blog Carnival is a collection of blog posts/ site links on a specific subject/ theme. We are happy to announce that the 2nd Online Sufi Poetry Carnival will be jointly hosted at Inspirations and Creative Thoughts, Courts of Lions and Abdur Rahman's Corner sites on August 7th, 2008.2. ThemeThe past round's theme was "Celebrating Divine Love" and this time around it is "Knocking from Inside".Sufi Dervishes are people who live at the threshold of this world and the next, between the visible world and the unseen realm. The truest and deepest expressions of sufi poetry arrive from lived experiences within and it's the ecstasy of soul that knocks from inside on the door of our external world. Daniel Abdal Hayy Moore once expressed: "the province of poetry is a private ecstasy made public."On the idea of "Knocking from Inside" Rumi says (translated by Co

Why the last ethical investing blog carnival?
    2008-07-08 23:14:00
This is an explanation of why I've decided to end the ethical investing blog carnival. There were plenty of submissions, but almost all were completely irrelevant. Here were the guidelines:"Submit your articles on ethical investing. Topics could include, but aren't limited to, discussions of environmentally friendly, people friendly, animal friendly investments; what makes an investment 'ethical,' can it be profitable, what commonly called 'ethical' investments are anything but that, is investing in the so called 'vice' industry necessary unethical, etc."However, please DO NOT submit posts that are irrelevant to the carnival. Posts MUST be about investing AND related to ethics."Submissions consisted mostly of ads for ebooks on trading stocks, Investor's Business Daily stock picks, lists of index funds, articles on which stocks are hot now, how to make money online, and so on.Since I received the same submissions to my other blog carnival, "Simply Investing" (the next edition will be hug

Here is the one that made the cut.Dorian Wales presents Free Market Proponents Call for Regulation on Speculative Oil Futures Trading: Define Irony posted at The Personal Financier, saying, "Analysts say speculative oil trading is to blame for gas prices at $4 a gallon. Congress considers regulation and legislation. What happened to market forces of supply and demand?"The author makes an argument in favor of more regulations. In the process, futures contracts and the invisible hand are explained, and we are treated to a few quotes from Ayn Rand, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and Thomas Hobbes.Technorati tags: slackerwealth's ethical investing carniv, blog carnival

Two Things: New Catholic Network and the Catholic Carnival
    2008-07-04 15:30:30
I just read in the recent Catholic World Report about a new Catholic online network at SQPN.com. It looks very interesting and, oddly enough, is just around the corner from us in Conyers, Georgia (not literally, but I did live there while working at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit). So far, so good. There's lots of good content on their website. Also, don't miss this week's Catholic Carnival here. As always, it's a wonderful roundup of Catholic thought from throughout the blogosphere. Sorry for the infrequent posting lately, Summer's here and we've been busy with the kids. But I do have a couple of posts I'm working on now. God bless, Jay

Catholic Carnival 176: The Structures of Life
    2008-06-10 20:27:21
Politics and government seem to be everywhere these days, but they are only a small part of our lives. This week's Catholic Carnival seemed to hit on every aspect of being a Catholic, every structure that affects our lives. So I thought I would organize it just as it seemed to me. So, dig in and enjoy:   FAMILY Congratulations! Weathering the Storm at Transitus Tiber reflects on her becoming a Benedictine Oblate at the Saturday Vigil Mass on June 7th. It also explores the difficulties she's experiencing as a result of becoming an Oblate in the form of lots of temptations and concludes with what she is grateful for regarding our beautiful Catholic faith.   God of My Daily Routine at Philly Catholic Spirituality is a reflection on finding God in our daily routine through the use of the examen. God is with us, though we don't always know it.   Happy 11th Birthday, Isabella at Cause of Our Joy is a wonderful birthday prayer that really gives you a feel for Isabella's person

Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival 2008
    2008-06-09 06:58:31
8 June 2008At 8am, my Aunt, Mother and I reported to the Volunteers registration booth at Metta School [32 Simei Street 1]. The Volunteer Executive, Eilynn, handed us our Tshirt and directed us to our booth. The Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival is an annual event organised to raise funds for the Metta Welfare Association. The Carnival sees booths set up by various business owners and volunteers who donates all proceeds generated to charity. I had attended and volunteered for the previous year. This year, I brought along my family and had fun doing our part for charity.Since we were early, we browsed the Happy Arts Deli cafe for breakfast. The cafe features vegetarian delicacies. When the boxes arrived for our booth, we began unpacking the Lavender products from the Gift Cottage. I watched along as Mother and Aunt discussed over what was the best layout for the booth. A great opportunity for the two adults to immerse themselves with hands-on training for entrepreneurship. The Guest-

Rumble: When you think of Venice: Carnival
    2008-05-08 16:03:34
What else do you think of when hearing "Venice"? Pumuckl commented in a previous post saying: "Carnival"!And she is right! The carnival of Venice was first recorded in 1268, and has been a long tradition since then. Strolling through the alleys of Venice, we came across many shops where they sold the typical Venetian masks, made in leather or with the original papier-mâché technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration. They often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.A photo impression:View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.

    Carnival of the Godless #89
    2008-04-13 00:08:42
I am honored to be hosting the 89th Carnival of the Godless, but before we begin, I need to tell the readers something. All of the following people are bad representatives of atheism. At least in somebody's opinion. Every person here adheres to a particular viewpoint, methodology, or philosophy with which some other atheist disagrees. Every single one of them. Yet, here they are, spewing their ideas all over the internet with impunity. The horror! What kind of arrogance would compel these people to voice their ill-informed opinions as if they speak for all atheists? You know, they're doing more harm than good. At least, that's what we're told. That's what "they" (cue spooky music) want us to believe. But how much truth lies in those accusations? Are those statements not also an opinion that may offend somebody else, likely the person at whom they are directed? Might not that also be perceived as detrimental to "the cause?" read more

Carnival of the Godless and more Vox
    2008-04-05 03:22:58
I am officially announcing that the next Carnival of the Godless will be hosted here, on my blog, beginning April 13. Be on the lookout for that. I have gotten a bunch of good submissions already. The following is a "response" from a Vox Day fan. The hypothesis comes from pure observation, and is then proven or not by experimentation. Perhaps you should study the scientific method. Quote:But a brief survey with biases may still be hypothesis generating, it is the more detailed study that confirms or rejects this. And my comment about the onus being on the person denying it is because n

Carnival Pride Review Of a Wonderful Ship
    2008-04-04 13:07:25
There it was, the Carnival Pride, sitting majestically in port awaiting the arrival of the next group of guests to sail to the Mexican Riviera. I was pumped! I had been on cruises before but this was the first seven night cruise I had been on. I couldn't wait to board the ship and see our stateroom, and get started on our next adventure. We were setting sail out of Long Beach California for the Mexican Riviera. Our trip would take us to Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas. It was October and according to the Carnival website the weather down in Mexico would be beautiful. They were right. We had a Balcony Stateroom with an extended balcony and we were cruising with family who were in the staterooms next to ours. After some trying and signing agreements we were able to get the doors opened between balconies so we could all sit out together and relax and watch the ports come and go. I highly recommend getting a port side room when cruising, especially when you have a balcony room

    The Carnival (exchanges)
    2008-03-25 00:00:00
By the side of the road, exchanging numbers; African rhythm guitars and tin-can-clatters; a bongo drums, throbbing out our uncertainties. Follow the crowds to the big tent, hand-in-hand; pickled cocktail onions and Bratwurst; beer foam on the lip, we exchange glimpses of still-standing souls. A steamy call of an angel, Heavenly Daal and crispy Naan Bread; We exchange Punjab smiles; ‘free’ yoghurt rice, amazing what respect costs. Attracted by the intricate details, the Thai stall invites us in; a ‘wai’, Jasmine rice with wild red curry (and few rice whiskeys in exchange for politeness), we are merrily on our way. ‘The days are getting shorter and shorter,’ you say, as we lay naked, exhausted, in exchange for the mantle of the stars. ‘That’s why we have to make our own carnivals,’ I reply, in exchange for a last kiss.
