The Dublin Castle And Its Courtyards
    2008-05-30 04:19:00
The Dublin Castle is among the most important structures in Ireland. In 1210, it was built on the orders of the first Lord of Ireland, King John. Over the years, the Dublin Castle has evolved from a defensive fortress to an administrative center and a vice-regal court. It has suffered from several destructions, but the worst attack made against it was in 1534, when "Silken Thomas" Fitzgerald, a courtier who had relinquished his loyalty to the English Crown, led an uprising. The Dublin Castle has faced many changes, not only physically, but also in terms of the governing powers that resided within it. The castle has stood for centuries and has been constantly repaired, refurbished, and kept in the state that it is at present. Unlike before, the use of the castle is now primarily for ceremonial purposes. Tourists are free to go around the courtyards, luxuriant state apartments, and museums within it.The Castle is located in Dublin Center along Dame Street. It is comprised of several court

What Do You Like Most about the Students at Castle Rock AIKIDO? Jeff Albright Sensei answers
    2008-04-09 11:35:00
Interview with Castle Rock AIKIDO Instructor, Jeff Albright SenseiSean: What do you like most about your students at Castle Rock AIKIDO?Jeff: Well, we have a lot of really good folks here. They are really nice people. Everybody is trying to learn something, trying to grow, and trying to develop themselves. We don't seem to attract people who are out to hurt other, or people with a chip on their shoulder. They are just really nice people, the kind of people you want to hang out with.Sean: Yeah, I know when I talk with some people about martial arts one of the first things they say is that they are intimidated. They say things like "Oh no, martial arts is not for me" or "I don't want to get hurt," or something like that. But it sounds to me like that is not the kind of person you attract.Jeff: No, not at all. Typically the people who are a little more hot-headed tend to be attracted to other kinds of martial art styles like MMA. We attract a really neat group, have a great time, and stay

Desperately Seeking Organic Food in Castle Rock
    2008-04-01 06:48:37
My husband and I moved from Littleton to Castle Rock, Colorado three years ago. We absolutely love the town but during the winter and early spring we find ourselves back in Littleton twice a week to buy fresh organic produce. I am deeply envious of the large Vitamin Cottage that recently opened in Parker and we often go there to stock up on their non-limp produce. But the more I learn about developing a sustainable life the more I become convinced at how ridiculous it is that we drive 15-20 miles each way to buy organic produce and antibiotic free meats. However, I am not willing to give up organic food to eat from my local grocery store just to save on my petroleum use. One may argue that large local chains offer more organic foods than ever before. I agree, they offer more foods with the organic label; however, the strict guidelines for organic labeling are continuously being lowered thanks to the powerful influence of conventional food lobbies. This dilution of the organic label allo

    Gräfsnäs castle teapot?
    2008-03-09 14:42:00
Johannes has been researching Gräfsnäs castle ruin near Gothenburg, Sweden. The former castle has an interesting history. According to the legend it was cursed by a woman that was badly treated by the landowner. She told that it would be plagued by fire three times with 100 years apart, and the castle was actually burnt in 1634, 1734 and 1834.During the day of the fire in 1834 many people came to 'rescue' the things in the castle and many things were stolen. It is believed that the teapot above came from the castle via a gardener. Can it be dated to before or after the looting in 1834 I wonder? It was made by a company called Shaw & Fisher...anyone know anything about them?

Defend Your Castle: new awesome date, new awesome lookFiled under: Screens, Wii Ware XGen Studios has revamped the look of Defend Your Castle significantly for its May 12th Wii Ware release, swapping out the, well, "Flash game" look of the original for a lovely "made of junk" theme. The castle has become a set of construction-paper rectangles decorated with paper flags on toothpick poles, and the enemy invaders have become doodles with button heads. Our absolute favorite detail is the user interface: the health bar is now made of fabric scraps. We hate to make the comparison to a not-particularly-awesome game, but this style was used to excellent effect in the Napoleon Dynamite DS game. The art was by far the best thing about that game, whereas this has already been proven to be a pretty good game.Gallery: Defend Your CastlePermalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - JC Fletcher - Fri, 29 Feb 2008 20:00:0

Englewood Author’s Novel Inspired by Colorado Castle Owner
    2008-01-15 19:45:30
A Scottish castle brimming with European antiques is not what you would expect to see in Northern Douglas County. Nor would you expect to run into over 3,000 acres of pristine undeveloped land just east of Castle Pines Village. Even odder, this castle and the land was owned and governed by a Southern belle who raised cattle.Colorado's beauty and sunny days attract all sorts of people with interesting pasts and Tweet Kimble brought her life steeped in European culture to our Rocky Mountain State.Englewood author Corinne Joy Brown was one of the last writers to interview Tweet before she died in 1999. Tweet's character was so strong and so fascinating to Corinne that Tweet served as the inspiration for her historic novel "MacGregor's Lantern." The castle Tweet owned was modeled after Scottish castles. During the research for Corinne's book, Corinne discovered that the Scots dominated in the ranching industry in Colorado and Wyoming. It may have been this influence that encouraged the castle design at Cherokee Ranch.Maggie Dowling is the main character in MacGregor's Lantern. Her determination is reminiscent of the stories people still tell about Tweet Kimble. Maggie moved out West, accepting an engagement proposal from one of her father's clients. She expected adventure, which she certainly encountered but it wasn’t packaged the way she expected. Many women during the late 1800’s also traveled west with their husbands or to meet up with their fiancés and many found the western frontier too difficult to bear so they returned home. Returning home was never an option in Maggie's mind. She committed to the decision and for better or worse, she was going to see that decision through. This story combines independence and determination with usual western flair.I love reading stories about strong, determined women, so I gladly encourage you to MacGregor's Lantern by Corinne Joy Brown. If you live in Colorado or when you plan a visit, make sure you take a tour of Ch

Tell Us About Your Students at Castle Rock Aikido
    2007-12-09 09:55:00
Audio Interview between Sean, a student at Castle Rock Aikido and Aikido instructors, Jeff Albright Sensei and Miho Shiraki SenseiSean: Let's get to know about your Aikido school. Who are your students? Do they all come from Castle Rock?Jeff: We get all types of students, they come from all over the place, outside of Castle Rock – as far north as Westminster and we have two students from Colorado Springs as well.We get all kinds of different students, working professionals, parents; we've got a couple of college students, so we have a wide variety. We tend to get students in the 30-40 range, people who are searching and looking for different things as far as self development and personal development goes.Sean: And don't you guys have students older than that also?Jeff: Oh yes, we've had students as old as, I think 77 in Castle Rock.Sean: Wow. I bet a lot of people do not think of practicing martial arts in their 60's and 70's, do they?Jeff: They probably don't but there are many students and instructors who are well into their 80's and even their 90's who have thrown me around quite well. It is definitely a martial art you can do for a lifetime.Sean: Well that is pretty amazing. It sounds like people are willing to travel if necessary – quite a distance to come train with you guys. I think that is probably pretty unusual considering there is, in most towns, at least one martial arts school on every street corner; so the idea that people would travel, it sounds like well over an hour in some cases to come train with you guys is quiet a credit to your program.Jeff: Well, thank you. I think people just like the whole atmosphere – it is pretty energetic and upbeat and we have a good time, so I think they are willing to drive a little bit to be a part of that.End of this segment of the Aikido interview. Unique Japanese Exercise Provides Stress Relief to Castle Rock!
    2007-11-18 08:35:00
There is a great new form of stress relief available in Castle Rock. It's called Aikido (pronounced 'eye'-'key'-do'). Aikido is a unique form of Japanese exercise that fully engages your mind and body providing an excellent outlet for stress relief. Aikido is a martial art, but can be practiced at any level of intensity according to the needs or physical capabilities of the student. Unlike most martial arts, there are no punches or kicks in Aikido so injury is extremely rare. A student learns to move their body effectively and efficiently by employing almost dance-like moves that first evade and then off balance their partner (who is pretending to be an attacker) without injuring him or her. In addition to providing stress relief and a clear state of mind, it has the added benefit of being quite cardiovascular. So you de-stress and get fit at the same time.People of all ages practice Aikido, but it is particularly beneficial for adults. In fact, you’re never too old to start practicing Aikido. Several of our instructors’ teachers in Japan continue to train in their 70s and 80s! Lose yourself for an hour or so one, two or three times per week by engaging in this fun Japanese exercise that requires your complete and undivided attention. We promise you that when you’re practicing Aikido you won't be able to think about anything else. You won't be thinking about what went wrong at work yesterday, what you didn't get done at home today, or what you have to do tomorrow. You will just be at Aikido, in the present, with an empty mind. This is what produces stress-relief and relaxation - a mind and body that are fully living in the present, not the past and not the future. Everyone, at one time or another, needs to hold their awareness in the present. In fact, many experts and philosophers have suggested that that is all stress really is: the product of living in the past, future or both simultaneously at the expense of living in the present. Aik

Samurai came into power as a warrior class in the early 12th century and were subsequently disbanned, virtually becoming extinct, in the late 1880s with the fall of the feudal system of Japan and the rise of industry and westernization. New & Fun Form of Adult Fitness in Castle Rock!
    2007-11-03 11:18:00
Here's a reality of life when it comes to exercise; "If it’s boring, you won't do it. Period!" Most people know they should exercise more, but most people simply don't. This not necessarily because they don't want to be in better shape, but because so many popular kinds of exercises and fitness routines are utterly boring! If you're bored of endlessly walking on treadmills or elliptical trainers at the gym while watching overly-violent news broadcasts; or if you've tried yoga and Pilates but find them painfully slow, then I have a suggestion for you. Come try Aikido!Aikido, pronounced 'eye'-'key'-'doh', is a unique Japanese exercise that engages your entire body in a really fun and entertaining way. Aikido is a martial art, but can be practiced at any level of intensity according to the needs or physical capabilities of the student. Unlike most martial arts, there are no punches or kicks in Aikido so injury is extremely rare. You learn to move their body effectively and efficiently by employing almost dance-like moves that first evade and then off balance your partner (who is pretending to be an attacker) without injuring him or her.People of all ages practice Aikido, but it is particularly beneficial for adults. In fact, you're never too old to start practicing Aikido. Several of our instructors' teachers in Japan continue to train in their 70s and 80s! Many former martial arts student once again take up Aikido as they enter their 40s and 50s because Aikido is much easier on your body than other more well-known martial arts like Karate and Taekwondo. Most of all, Aikido is fun! Every class is different, so you don't get bored. Every technique requires your complete and undivided attention, so you can't "zone out." One of the most common things we hear is, "Wow! The time just flew by. I can't believe it is over so quickly!" Also, Aikido can be a great cardiovascular workout for the body… but there is a good chance that you won't even notice tha

    Castle Rock AIKIDO's Mission Statement
    2007-10-22 11:12:00
It is the mission of Castle Rock AIKIDO "to forge in our students a strength of character so strong, that conflict becomes unnecessary." Many assume that the "conflict" we refer to in our mission statement is physical conflict such as fighting with others. However, the conflict we mean to emphasize is inner conflict - the mental, emotional and even spiritual conflict most of us struggle within each and every day. Through the practice of Aikido we discover within ourselves a physical path to self-mastery…

    St. Angelo Castle - Rome
    2007-10-05 09:20:00
The castle was originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. Since then it has played many roles: a military fortification, a prison and a place of safety for the Pope during times of political unrest. A corridor links the castle with the Vatican Palace. The massive fortress of St. Angelo Castle takes its name from the vision of the Archangel Michael by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century, as he led a procession across the bridge, praying for the end of the plague of Black Death. The many rooms in the castle are extremely interesting: the bathroom of Clement VII decorated by Giulio Romano, the Sala Paolina with illusionistic frescoes by Tibaldi and Perin del Vaga, the historical prisons section, called the Mouth of Hell, where Cellini, Giordano Bruno, Cagliostro were imprisoned. This splendid bridge, built in the 2nd century links St. Angelo Castle to Campo Marzio. The bridge is adorned with statues of St. Paul and St. Peter. In the mid 17th century Pope Clement IX order the famous artist Bernini to create statues of ten angels to be placed on the balustrade.

You can also see a boat from Charles Bridge. Or you can see Charles Bridge from a boat :)Prague started big and a very very long reconstruction of Charles Bridge. It will be still open for tourists but it will be slowly under reconstruction. I think it will end in 2011 or so. Maybe later. They are reusing the old stones. The originals from Petr Parler from the 14th century. And when the stone is unusable, they will make a new one but in the old fashioned way. So it will look just like when the bridge was firstly finished in 1402.More photos of Charles Bridge at Prague DP.Canonet QL17 + Kodak Tri-X 400 (exposed at 800 ISO)My Canonet QL17 series

Castle Rock Colorado Residents Over 50 Taking Up Martial Arts
    2007-08-08 15:27:00
There's something strange going on in Castle Rock. Residents over fifty years old are beginning to practice a Japanese martial art called Aikido (pronounced 'eye-key-doh').Aikido isn't exclusively for men and women over fifty, but Aikido does seem to have an affinity for that age group. "I think it is because Aikido is a great form of exercise and a powerful form of self-defense, but still allows you to go to work on each morning without being covered in bruises and broken bones," says instructor Jeff Albright.Husband and wife instructors Jeff and Miho Albright don't seem surprised that their Aikido program is attracting people over fifty. "We have a tendency to attract more a intellectual, mature and introspective student, which may come with age, I suppose" he continued. "Our students really are here to become better people. It makes it a pleasure to teach them and we learn so much from them, as well." According to the instructors, there are no young, "hot-heads" with a chip on their shoulder in the program. "When those kind of people do show up, they tend not to stay," said Miho Albright. "Our program attracts people that are interested in having fun and growing personally, not people who are interested in learning how to hurt others."Jeff and Miho say that working adults tend to get forget that it is important for them to play, too. It's important for their health, their fitness, their mental state and even their social life. Aikido is a great opportunity to cover all of these needs. "Kids already have so many different activities to choose from. Our program is specifically targeted to adults," says Miho. "We allow teenagers 15-17 to participate, if they demonstrate the necessary maturity, but so far, we're an all adult program. Our focus is on providing adults with a fun, friendly, and physical environment to de-stress and grow as people."Castle Rock Aikido also tailors to adults by holding weekday classes in the evenings. Classes don't start until 8 p.m. This allows adults to come home from work, eat something, spend time with children, and then go practice Aikido for an hour or so. "This approach has been very successful for us. We seem to be fulfilling a real need in many Castle Rock households," Sensei Jeff continued. When most adults think of a martial arts school, they often think of children's classes, colorful belts, and pre-arranged fighting forms performed against imaginary opponents. Walk into many martial art schools and you'll hear loud shouts, screams, and grunts and if you look at the faces of many students you'll see a lot of brooding and grimacing. This Aikido program in Castle Rock is different. The predominant sound in class isn't shouting, but laughter. And, if you look around the room you see nothing but wide, bright smiles. Sensei Jeff Albright appeared to be quite serious when he said, "Aikido has a tendency to produce extreme happiness in people."While many martial arts have an age-related shelf life (like many professional sports do), Aikido is a life long practice. Aikido doesn't adversely discriminate with age. While much more dynamic than yoga, Aikido is similar to yoga in that you tend to get better, not worse, as you get older. "One of our teachers back in Japan is over 80 years old and still practices Aikido daily," says Sensei Miho. Furthermore, like yoga, Aikido contributes to health and longevity by helping to keep the body limber.Aikido strongly promotes and emphasizes body awareness. It is a way of physically reconnecting with yourself. By practicing Aikido, you learn to recognize just how much people have lost touch with their bodies, their senses, and for some people, their spirit. Aikido truly reawakens a spark of life long forgotten by many working adults. And, it does this without causing pain or injury.Student Gary S., 56, shared that "As I get older, I think about how I might maintain my balance, agility and coordination. As a health care professional I see many older people who have fallen and broken bones, in particular their hips. This happens, in part, because of a diminished sense of balance, a loss of agility. Aikido, through its repeated practice of centered movements, can help prevent such injuries by helping to maintain agility and a strong sense of balance."Paul P., 51, another health care professional at Parker Adventist Hospital, is attracted to Aikido because of it's non-competitive nature and relaxed atmosphere while still providing a good workout and good means of self-defense. "We accomplish an awful lot in a hour long class" says Paul. The low risk of injury played a significant role in his decision to practice Aikido, too. "Because of my profession, I need to be able to go to work the next day without injury. Aikido let's me do just that. Plus, I feel refreshed and revitalized after each class."Doug S., 55, has studied other martial arts in the past, however he prefers Aikido because of its more natural, flowing blend of form and function. "It's powerful, but graceful at the same time," says Doug. "And, it's really great for stress relief. When I'm grumpy after a long day at work, Aikido is a great way to focus on something non-work related for a while."Castle Rock Aikido is currently located inside Omega Gymnastics at 1609 Park Street in Castle Rock. You are welcome to come watch or try a class for free anytime. Samurai Descendant Teaches in Castle Rock, Colorado
    2007-08-07 20:15:00
Miho Shiraki Albright teaches the samurai sword and the Japanese martial art of Aikido in Castle Rock. However, she wasn't always in Colorado. Born and raised in Kitakyushu, a town in the Southern Japan Prefecture of Fukuoka, Miho is a descendant of a long line of samurai warriors of feudal Japan.Samurai were a class of Japanese military nobility who served a feudal lord and/or the Japanese Emperor. The word samurai derives from the Japanese verb "samorau," which means "to serve." Samurai came into power as a warrior class in the early 12th century and were subsequently disbanned, virtually becoming extinct, in the late 1880s with the fall of the feudal system of Japan and the rise of industry and westernization. This dramatic shift in culture was beautifully depicted in the 2003 film, The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise.Growing up, Miho had heard stories about her family's ancestors being pacifist, Shinto priests. What she didn't really know until recently was why did those ancestors become Shinto priests in the first place? Miho was somewhat surprised to discover that her ancestors hadn't always been priests, but, in fact, were from a long line of samurai warriors of feudal Japan. Miho's mother told her about samurai of the Shiraki family who had left the samurai class and became pacifists to atone for their violent past.Miho's family name of Shiraki has an interesting story itself. In Japan, carrying on a family name is of the utmost importance. Being a first-born son and head of a family unit is a very coveted position in Japanese culture. Being a first-born son is so coveted that second or later born sons will often marry women from families who have no sons and take the surname of the wife's family. Through marriage, the husband then becomes the prestigious, first-born son of the wife's family (albeit the first-born son- in-law). Miho's ancestors went through a similar experience.Sometime between 1100 and 1800 lived this samurai-turned-Shinto priest family named Shiraki. This particular family had no children, yet it was still very important to them to carry on the name of Shiraki. So they did something somewhat unorthodox, at the time. Since they had no children, they arranged for a marriage between a second family with only a daughter and a third family with a second-born son. In return for arranging this marriage, the families of the young couple agreed to take on and perpetuate the priests' family name of Shiraki. This was a mutually beneficial arrangement for the two families since the Shiraki priests were the keepers of a highly respected Shinto shrine in Southern Japan, Munakata Taisha shrine of Kyushu. The newly married couple (Miho's ancestors) inherited responsibility for this shrine.Much like her samurai/shinto priest ancestors, Miho, too, did something very unorthodox. In 1996, she married a "gaijin", or foreigner - an American, no less.Dr. Jeff Albright, DC (who practices Japanese Acupuncture in Castle Rock) and Miho Shiraki were married in Japan over ten years ago and, congruent with both American and Japanese culture, Miho took the surname of Jeff (a first-born son himself). In Japan, there are no hyphenated last names, nor any middle names. So Miho somewhat reluctantly gave up her Shiraki family name. However, while living in the United States, Miho has chosen to honor her ancestors by making Shiraki her middle name.Miho's family also has a very unique family crest. Japanese family crests are almost always circular and named after the male's family. However, Miho's family crest is a three-pronged white tree surrounded by a hexagon. The hexagon shape emphasizes the female elements in Japanese crest symbology. Use of the hexagon, instead of the traditional circle for the family crest appears to have been part of the agreement made between the three families at the time of the unorthodox marriage. This was meant to honor the Shiraki family name and the unique family arrangement made by these three families to carry on the name of Shiraki. The family crest has remained unchanged in Miho's family since this unique joining of families. Today, Miho & Jeff continue to use the Shiraki symbol as their personal family crest as well as the logo for the Aikido martial arts school they teach at in Castle Rock.Miho, and her husband Jeff, teach a samurai sword class on Sunday afternoons and Aikido throughout the week. In class, students use traditional, wooden Japanese practice-swords, called bokken. You can learn more about Miho and Jeff's martial art programs by visiting http://www.craikido.com/ or by calling Castle Rock Aikido, LLC at 720-221-3665.

Bank with a Prague castle view and a skatepark nearby

I wouldn't tell before but Prague castle is pretty visible from a lot of places in Prague. Not a surprise at this one (of course) as it is really close to Old Town.Actually taken from a bridge that goes over Stvanice island. They have a great skate park here and they had a Mystic skate cup competition here last weekend. Which I noticed when I was sitting on a bench (that one in the centre of the picture) and there were suspiciously big number of skaters going around. Most of them foreigners. Two of them tried to swim in Vltava - see the "V" shaped from the steps - but a local man illustrated them pantomimicly (he didn't speak English, evidently) that they better not try.

Moorish Castle in Sintra was listed in 16.6.1910 as National Monument being now included in the World Heritage listing as “Cultural Landscape of Sintra” and, therefore covered by the Portuguese Heritage Law. The current building is the result of a romantic renovation carried out in the 19th century. The Moorish Castle Complex is made up of various buildings, gates, fortified walls and its most dominant features, The Tower of Homage. The walls of the old castle enclosed a considerable area, reaching almost to the sea, where even today the Moorish Pier is still visible. The views from its walls and towers are breathtaking. The village of Sintra with its Royal Palace, as well as the Pena National Palace are all visible from the Castle of the Moors. Originally, the Castle of Sintra was built by the Moors, possibly between the 9th and 10th centuries. Arab chronicles depict the Sintra region as being very rich in cultivated fields.
