A Brief History of “Roman Catholic” Anti-Semitism
    2008-07-08 14:13:00
A Brief History of “Roman Catholic” Anti-SemitismYear 306: The Roman Catholic Church’s “Synod of Elvira” banned marriages and all contact between Christians and Jews.Year 315: Constantine made Christianity the “state” religion. His Edict of Milan extended religious tolerance to Christians, but Jews lost many of their rights. The edict also declared that Jews were no longer allowed to live in Jerusalem.Year 325: The Council of Nicea separated the celebration of Easter from the Jewish Passover. Its subsequent edict stated, “For it is unbecoming beyond measure that on this holiest of festivals we should follow the customs of the Jews. Henceforth let us have nothing in common with this odious people... We ought not, therefore, to have anything in common with Jews... our worship follows a ... more convenient course ... we desire, dearest brethren, to separate ourselves from the detestable company of the Jews ... How, then, could we follow these Jews, who are almost certainly

The "Why I Can't Be A Catholic" Offensive
    2008-07-06 15:54:00
So recently I was invited by a friend to attend services at the local Catholic church. Of course I declined, and I think I may have offended my friend in doing so.I know. :(But in my defense, he's the one who put me on the spot so I had to come up with something, and I certainly didn't want to tell him that I just don't need any church to fulfill my needs because I fulfill my own needs quite nicely and quite often, thank you very much.Hey!Don't give me that look!I meant I fulfill my needs by goi

Two Things: New Catholic Network and the Catholic Carnival
    2008-07-04 15:30:30
I just read in the recent Catholic World Report about a new Catholic online network at SQPN.com. It looks very interesting and, oddly enough, is just around the corner from us in Conyers, Georgia (not literally, but I did live there while working at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit). So far, so good. There's lots of good content on their website. Also, don't miss this week's Catholic Carnival here. As always, it's a wonderful roundup of Catholic thought from throughout the blogosphere. Sorry for the infrequent posting lately, Summer's here and we've been busy with the kids. But I do have a couple of posts I'm working on now. God bless, Jay

The Debate Over The Apocrypha - Why Are There Extra Books In The "Catholic Bible" That Aren't In The Bible That Most Christians Read?
    2008-07-02 13:45:00
The Apocrypha ("hidden", "doubtful") most commonly refers to a group of disputed books which are rejected by Protestants and most other Christian groups and accepted by the Roman Catholic organization. So why are these books in the "Catholic Bible" and not in other Bibles? The folks over at inplainsite.org have done a very good job of explaining the issues behind this debate. The article linked to below will answer such questions as:-Did the Jews consider the Apocrypha part of the Old Testament?-What did Jesus think of the Apocrypha?-Does the New Testament refer to the Apocrypha?-Did the early church fathers believe the Apocrypha was authoritative?-What kinds of problems do we find with the Apocrypha? For those who are curious about this topic I would encourage you to go read the article:http://www.inplainsite.org/html/apocrypha.html

    Catholic Website for Teens

Just wanted to point out a new Catholic resource for teens called Songs in the Key of Justice from Disciples Now. It offers Catholic song downloads and lots of social opportunities specifically for Catholic teens.  I think this is exactly the type of thing Pope John Paul II was calling us to with his New Evangelization. And it looks fun and interesting, unlike some other sites setup for teens.  God bless,Jay

Clap for Jesus: A Great Catholic Charity needs help
    2008-06-22 10:29:14
This morning we had Father Simon from Ghana come and speak at our parish. They're trying to raise $300,000 to finish the building of a Catholic school in Ghana. So far he's had quite a bit of success in improving the conditions of an impoverished area of Ghana and this would be the next big step on his journey. You can see the details at ClapForJesus.org where you can also give a donation of money or time or sign up to participate in a wine auction at St. Andrews in Roswell to raise money. If you can give they would appreciate it, but your prayers are needed as well. Africa is dealing with poverty and AIDS in an unprecedented way. So please pray that this sparks a revival of Catholic culture in the area. Father Simon is committed to raising Catholic children by giving them an education in morals and faith as well as traditional subjects. In particular, Father Simon asks that you pray to Oscar Romero, a martyr currently in the canonization process. God bless, Jay

Catholic Carnival 176: The Structures of Life
    2008-06-10 20:27:21
Politics and government seem to be everywhere these days, but they are only a small part of our lives. This week's Catholic Carnival seemed to hit on every aspect of being a Catholic, every structure that affects our lives. So I thought I would organize it just as it seemed to me. So, dig in and enjoy:   FAMILY Congratulations! Weathering the Storm at Transitus Tiber reflects on her becoming a Benedictine Oblate at the Saturday Vigil Mass on June 7th. It also explores the difficulties she's experiencing as a result of becoming an Oblate in the form of lots of temptations and concludes with what she is grateful for regarding our beautiful Catholic faith.   God of My Daily Routine at Philly Catholic Spirituality is a reflection on finding God in our daily routine through the use of the examen. Catholic High School
    2008-06-04 09:05:00
How different is Japanese Junior High School from Philippine High School? (From a former Catholic School Student’s perspective) One thing that is firmly visible is that the Philippine educational system is very different with Japan. In Japan and with most countries, the high school curricula is divided into Junior and Senior High wherein in each year, the students spend around three (3) years of education. In the Philippines, there is no distinction between Junior and Senior High Schools as separate institutions but combined into one entity. This means that in Philippines, if you say High School, levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 years are combined into one High School system. In Philippines, there is no government subsidized school lunch as with Japan’s educational system. Schools have own cafeterias and canteens wherein students buy food during lunch and in-between breaks. Or during lunch, students bring their own lunchboxes which are similar to Japan’s obentou. For some students

    2008-06-03 20:45:00
The Rev. Edson Fernando Costa, 39, of West Orange, a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, has been arrested and charged with one count of criminal sexual contact, a fourth-degree crime, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced.Costa was a priest at Saint Anne’s Parish in Fair Lawn at the time of the alleged incident. His residence is currently listed as Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, West Orange, though he is not currently listed as a member of the parish's staff. The arrest came about as a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Squad, under the direction of Chief Joseph Macellaro, and the Fair Lawn Police Department, under the direction of Chief Erik Rose.A 72-year-old female parishioner of Saint Anne’s Parish reported to her pastor and later the Archdiocese of Newark that Fernando Costa had taken her hand and forced her to touch him in a sexual manner. That incident allegedly too

Full statement from archdiocese on Hudson Catholic going co-ed
    2008-05-21 14:11:00
Hudson Catholic Regional High School, Jersey City, the all-boys college preparatory school that recently undertook a very successful effort to stay in operation after June 2008, will become a co-educational school in September 2009.Rev. Kevin M. Hanbury, Ed. D., vicar for education and superintendent of schools of the Archdiocese of Newark, made the announcement following conversations with the DeLaSalle Christian Brothers, the religious community that administers the school, and members of the alumni board that has been involved in the effort to continue the school."It is most important for everyone to know," Hanbury said, "that all involved in the Hudson Catholic's long-range planning agree that broadening the field of eligible students to include young women is both a natural and necessary element of the school's future. We anticipate that this announcement will be welcomed happily by parents, current students and prospective students."Planning will commence this summer so that youn

Hudson Catholic going co-ed in 2009-2010 school year
    2008-05-20 12:00:00
Hudson Catholic High School, which was slated to close its doors in June before alumni banded together to save the school, will go co-ed beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, the Rev. Kevin Hanbury, vicar for education of the Archdiocese of Newark announced in a release today.Hanbury says going co-ed is essential for the school's future success.Hudson Catholic has been an all-boys college preparatory school since it opened its doors in the 1960s. However, with fewer options for girls in Hudson County Catholic schools, news that Hudson is going co-ed may help keep girls in Catholic schools who would otherwise have looked elsewhere for a Catholic education or who might have had to consider going to the public schools. To help keep Hudson Catholic afloat, log on to the school's Web site by clicking here.

    Hudson Catholic will remain open
    2008-05-07 21:44:00
In perhaps the most stunning and quickest turn around ever in Catholic education, officials announced tonight that Hudson Catholic High School, originally scheduled to close in June, will instead remain open, because the school's alumni have raised more than $500,000 in pledges in the last 2 1/2 weeks. They needed to raise $400,000 in that time frame, and they surpassed the imposed archdiocesan goal by more than $100,000.Congratulations to everyone involved. What an incredible effort by everyone.

Hudson Catholic alum: 'Very positive message to share' tomorrow
    2008-05-06 18:54:00
I received this e-mail today from an alumnus in the Keep Hudson Catholic Open group on Facebook — and it looks like there could be a good announcement about the school's future coming tomorrow. Here's the text of the e-mail — and I'll let you know if I hear anything more on the situation.“I just spoke to an alumnus that is working very hard to keep the school open. He told me that a core group of alumni had a meeting yesterday with representatives of the archdiocese. Coming out of the meeting, they have a very positive message to share with all of us.That is why we are all invited to a gathering/rally at Hudson Catholic's gym tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. At that time, the exact details of our situation will be announced. This alumnus told me to end the message with this: HAWKS FLY HIGH.See you all tomorrow.”

They're getting even closer to their goal at Hudson Catholic
    2008-05-01 22:24:00
Received this e-mail today from the Hudson Catholic Alumni Association, and thought I'd share it with you below. They're still in need of donations, though they're much closer than they were even yesterday. It's amazing what a little work can do. The shame of it all is that the school officials who were responsible for fundraising couldn't do what a group of alums are doing — in just two weeks! At any rate, here's the e-mail. Want to help? Log on to www.HudsonCatholic.org.We're doing great. Over $298,000 pledged as of tonight. We need to keep pushing though. A few of our alumni from the class of '90 are hosting a fundraiser at the Grand Banks Cafe in Jersey City tomorrow night, Friday, May 2, from 5-8:30 p.m. They are asking for a $50 donation at the door (checks preferred) which will go directly to the Hudson Catholic fundraising efforts. Members of the mother's guild will be at the door collecting money so you can be sure that every dime will go to our cause. If you can, invite s

Goodness to Hudson Catholic alums: Sorry, you only have until May 7, not three weeks, that's always been the case, and too bad otherwise
    2008-04-28 05:37:00
When alumni of Hudson Catholic High School got together last week to discuss the possibility of saving the school, many were pleased when they were told by archdiocesan officials they’d have three weeks to come up with a substantial amount of pledged money to keep the place open. But, according to today’s Jersey Journal, apparently in the eyes of the Archdiocese of Newark, three weeks actually translates into two weeks and two days. The Journal reports alumni received a note from the archdiocese setting a fundraising deadline of May 7. Do the math, and May 7 is two weeks, two days after the so-called three-week deadline. What this writer is trying to decide is whether the two-week, two day deadline rather than a three-week deadline is more insulting, or whether James Goodness, archdiocesan spokesman’s explanation is more of an insult. I’m leaning toward the latter.“The date was never changed," Goodness told the Journal. “I realize they were told three weeks at the meeting, bu

    Hudson Catholic has hope
    2008-04-21 21:06:00
Who says protests don't work anymore? At a meeting tonight at Hudson Catholic High School, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark told alumni and parents they had three weeks to come up with a fundraising plan to help keep the school office. And, it was also noted there is a chance the school could go co-ed after the upcoming school year. This is great news for the kids and alums of Hudson. It's unfortunate the alumni association has to do the work school officials should have been doing in fundraising, but it's a small victory nonetheless. As information becomes available, we'll be sure to share it with you.

ANTI-CATHOLIC SENTIMENT SURFACESI think by now any thinking person knows the Puppetmaster, John Tanton, is very anti-Catholic.  Somehow I don’t think he is very happy with the visit of the Holy Father.  So, he has sent his little minions of darkness out to try and ratchet up anti-immigration sentiment based on anti-Catholic bias.  The man uses bias and ‘hate’ as his tools of the trade. His minions adopt his values and his tone.  The result – well, you be the judge.  I think we  now know Tom Tancredo and Michelle Malkin are two of his little flunkies.  I think ...

There will be no "It's Friday" this week, unless you happen to count this as that. Personally, I am tagging this one as "Friday," so you might as well.

Catholic Carnival 156: Saints, Sin, Politics, and Life
    2008-01-22 07:37:21
There is a little of everything in this Catholic Carnival - from great information about Saints and Cardinals to incisive looks at our political culture today. I started to organize it more, but it just felt more like life when I left it a little messy. Without any other jibber-jabber, here's the Catholic Carnival: Spending a Year in Good Company at Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering reflects on Sarah's patron Saints for this year: Sts. Paul and Barnabas. She also includes links to find your patron Saint for this year. Things I'm Learning from Saint Catherine of Siena at Postscripts from the Catholic Spitfire Grill does just what the title suggests and explores judgmentalism and personal holiness. What's Intent Got to Do With It? at We Belong to the Lord answers the question with a few examples that perfectly explain. Relativism is everywhere. Catholic Carnival 154: Our Culture: Faith, Media, Politics
    2008-01-08 07:12:24
This week's Catholic Carnival seems to be all about the pieces of our lives that make up our national culture. It seems appropriate to discuss our culture at the start of a new year - we even have posts challenging us to improve it (through learning and teaching our Faith). So without further adieu, here's the Catholic Carnival: Faith: that sustains us and our culture. As a first time religious ed teacher (I have first graders), I can attest to the truth of Catholic Matriarch in My Domestic Church's submission. But it's more than that! She offers A Catechetical Challenge for 2008. Are you up to the task? Father V at Adam's Ale throws a little humor, a lot of truth, and some thoughtful opinion in a post on eulogizing called Not Such A Dead Topic. Think a eulogy should be done at Mass? Read this post first . . . My Domestic Church gives us a little More on Saint Columba. It all starts with an email - and I would be surprised if you don't learn something new. And with more to learn, CatholicLand! gets us started learning in O Holy Name. It offers ways to venerate the Holy Name during January (and anytime). And now for something completely different. Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering offers us a unique look at life in Lambing Season. I can't say I've seen a lamb born (city boy and all that), but I do appreciate the little lesson on God. Not to be outdone, Cause of Our Joy tells us that Pope Benedict and I are cat people. Unfortunately, her cat died last week, but this is a great eulogy (don't worry, Father V, it isn't in a Mass) of her favored pet. Another great story comes from The World . . . IMHO with Wisconsin Bishop Breaks from Conference and Opposes Emergency Contraception in Catholic Hospitals. It's great to see a Bishop stand up for life no matter the situation, in my humble opinion. Go read the whole story - and don't miss the "update." It is a new year and Simple Gifts offers us New Year's Resolution: Elimination Diet. It's not

Catholic Carnival 147: Giving, not Receiving
    2007-11-27 07:18:44
We try to focus on the giving aspects of Advent and Christmas with our children and this Carnival just seemed to go along those lines (maybe it's just the way I was thinking!), so I carved it up in terms of Giving thanks, love, learning and even humor. Enjoy: Giving Thanks We Belong to the Lord celebrates Thanksgiving with her grandmother's recipes. And while cooking, why not reflect grandmother's life, love, and wisdom handed down over the years. The Buckeyes are third, but Sarah is second in this Carnival. At just another day of Catholic pondering she brings us An Unexpected Gift from God. She explains how choosing a godparent became a special gift to her through the wisdom the godparent shared with his goddaughter. Giving Love luminousmiseries offers a great penitential devotion in On the Road to Purgatory. It recommends a book exploring how to devote 30 days of prayer for the souls in purgatory - a great devotion particularly during Advent. Streams of Mercy brings us a wonderful life story with In Memoriam: Jane Denton, wife of Senator Jeremiah Denton Jr.. It is the story of a strong, dedicated Catholic wife, mother, and patriot. Keeping the focus on heroic sacrifice Mommy Monsters explores the changing nature of family in Family We Don't Get to Pick. This reflection speaks to the heart of adoption and why one person can - and sometimes should - extend themselves heroically on behalf of a child. Muddy Bathwater tells the story of losing a parish you love in Queen of Our Hearts. It offers a "view from the pew" tells a sad story, but with joyous memories. Transitus Tiber offers Healing through her experiences. Her baby "grew wings" at 5 weeks gestation. This post explores her thoughts and feelings as well as how her faith has deepened through the experience. Giving Humor Play the Dad? No, be the Dad! starts the humor off with Rubrics for Toddlers: Section 1 Introductory Rites. It's a humorous take on the Mass for those of us who do take toddlers

My First Catholic Church Visit in Yotsuya
    2007-11-25 07:51:00
Finally, I have found a Catholic Church in Yotsuya. St. Ignatuis Parish beside Sofia University. You would not be easily lost as the tall crucifix on top of the belfry is visible outside from Yotsuya Station via my one-and-only Chuou Line (another special mention of the train). There is another Church on the left-side facing oppositely with St. Ignatius with a huge cross. But I am not sure if it is a Catholic. Just ask for directions where is Sofia University. The church is nice and warm! I was a bit late, as usual. But I manage to listen to the words of wisdom. I felt relieved and I don't know but cried in the middle of the mass. Maybe I was affected with the OFW syndrome. Which they say, lonely OFWs get too emotional on their second month. And always the second month. Also, I felt goosebumps and the usual eerie when the song "Kordero ng Dios" was sung. I am not used to Tagalog mass hymns. I am either into English and the hardcore Bisaya mass hymns. But when the hymn was sung, it felt

    Catholic Movies take Center Stage
    2007-10-17 22:05:10
Just wanted to point out that this year might be remembered as the year religion came back to the movie theaters. Movies are a central part of our culture and because of this they have a unique opportunity to change the culture's thinking on certain topics. For a long time anti-Christians and social liberals have used movies to affect culture in the ways they see fit - making abortion okay, homosexuality a normal state of life, etc. So it's good to see the pendulum swinging back! Here are a few of the great Christian movies that are about to come to theaters: The Ten Commandments Condemned to die by Pharaoh while just a baby, Hebrew Moses is set adrift on the River Nile by his mother and his sister. Rescued by the daughter of Pharaoh, he grows up thinking he's an Egyptian prince. Eventually exiled from Egypt when he is exposed as a Jew, he is touched by God, and told that he will lead his enslaved Chosen People to the Promised Land. With the hand of God firmly on his shoulder,

    Catholic Halloween Costumes
    2007-10-16 19:44:54
It's that time of year again - the Eve of All Saint's Day (at one time known as Hallowmas or "Saint's Mass") when children dress up like monsters all too often. But as Catholics we can encourage our kids to use appropriate Halloween costumes that celebrate the dead that deserve to be celebrated! I received this email from a friend (one of those emails that travels around the internet) and I thought I would share it. So here are some Costume Ideas for kids: ALTAR BOY: St. Dominic Savio. Died age 15, patron saint of boys, altar boys, & choirboys. Pictured as altar boy or in suit with bow tie. ANGEL: Adult T-shirt or a dress, sash or belt at waist and sandals. For halo see HALOS. For wings use cardboard, wrapped in tin foil or buy.    Archangel Gabriel: with a horn at the belt.    St. Michael: see KNIGHT/ARMOUR (below) or just put sword in belt.    Cherubim or Seraphim- instrument hanging from belt) APOSTLE/ FRIAR/ MONK/OLD TESTAMENT: Adult

Who to Join in Helping the Poor: St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Worker Movement, ... Priests for Life?
    2007-10-01 01:15:02
Ministering to the poor is something that comes natural to Catholic Christians as we strive for greater union with Christ and love for our neighbor. One thing to keep in mind if we have entered the marriage vocation, is that we cannot sacrifice our family in order to work for the poor. However, as a family gets more established more free time becomes available to spend helping one's neighbor. If possible, do some volunteering as a family. This helps unify the family and parents set a great example for their children. There are many types of poverty to address - lack of morality/spirituality, loneliness, lack of education, and lack of material need, just to name a few. Pray and decide which kind of poverty you are feeling called to minister to. The most common type of poverty when people think of the word "poverty" is the lack of material need. There are many Catholic and non-Catholic organizations one can get involved with to minister to the materially poor. But Catholics need to do some research before getting involved with these organizations because they can have very different philosophies on how to help the poor. The main question these philosophies boil down to is: "What is their view of life?" Is it a burden or is it a gift from God? Secular organizations that help the materially poor often see life as a burden, since many of them deem anti-life measures such as abortion and sterilization to be good weapons in the war against poverty. Sadly, some Catholic organizations implicitly agree with this view on life by their deliberate silence on topics such as these. To me it seems like a Catholic organization cannot exclude the right to life in its work to help the poor. Who is poorer than the person without the right to live? To my knowledge, the only Catholic group to successfully synthesize aiding the materially poor and the right to life is the Missionaries of Charity order of nuns started by Mother Teresa. If anyone reading this knows of any other group, I would like to know. The other Catholic groups that help the poor have been so silent in defending these poor that groups that focus solely on the abortion issue have had to be established. Sadly, they are often branded as "narrow minded" and "single issue" groups that ignore the needs of the materially poor outside of the womb. So find out about the organization you choose to volunteer with, and if you find yourself in a situation hostile to the Gospel of the fullness Life, be not afraid to evangelize! Pax et Bonum, Daniel

The Catholic Church in Italy benefits from real estate tax breaks
    2007-09-02 16:30:00
The European Commission has asked Italy for information about tax breaks it gives to the Roman Catholic Church on income from property, after receiving complaints that they amount to illegal state aid. "We have addressed the Italian authorities and asked them for information about this. We are talking about certain tax concessions for the Catholic Church in Italy," Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd told a news briefing on Tuesday. If the Commission opened an official probe and found the Church received aid illegally, it would be up to the Italian authorities to recover the money, Todd said.

Environmentalism and the Global Warming Religion: An Agent of the Catholic Church
    2007-08-30 22:34:15
I argued a while back that Global Warming is clearly a religion. The only difference is that they pay for their sins with carbon credits, buying hybrids, and using one strip of toilet paper. Now it appears that actual religions are relieving the guilt of environmental heathens too. Of all organizations, the Roman Catholic Church is at hand with a new line in “green confessions” to help eco-sinners find forgiveness.“Dom Anthony Sutch, the Benedictine monk who resigned as head of Downside School to become a parish priest in Suffolk, will be at the county’s Waveney Greenpeace festival this weekend to hear eco-confessions in what is thought to be the first dedicated confessional booth of its kind.” From what we are told, a new poll for Norwich Union found that, “Nine out of ten people tell little green lies about how much they recycle and how little they consume, according to a recent survey.” I predict that if they surveyed smug celebrities like Al Gore, John Edwards, L

    Resource for Catholic Businessmen
    2007-08-21 19:01:04
As a worker in the world, I'm always looking for good resources that will help me integrate my faith into my work. I just found an interesting new website, Catholic Business Journal, that seeks to do just that. As employees we can never leave our faith behind - and we cannot act outside of the moral norms. However, there's another level beyond that: we can try and elevate our work to help sanctify our lives. This is done by making business decisions that take into account our co-workers or employees, their families, and the cultural environment as well as profit and sales. This website provides good advice and thought on how to make your work spiritually beneficial to you and others. It also has great sections like Questions and Answers that answer some basic questions about how employees should act in the workplace. It's definitely worth checking out if you are employed outside the home. God bless, Jay

Catholic Carnival 129: Prayer . . . and Spring Break
    2007-07-24 15:43:12
Not a huge Carnival this week (everyone but you and I are apparently on vacation), but nevertheless the articles are great. It amazes me how many times I get a great idea or God really convicts me while reading a Carnival post. Anyway, without further adieu (or further confessions), here’s the Carnival: A Prayer to Resist Sexual Temptation starts us off with a punch from You, a Prayerful Conversation. It’s a great post driven by an appearance from Christopher West on Life on the Rock. Our day and age needs more and more of this. Smells of Summer at just another day of Catholic pondering helps you to stop and smell God’s creation – quite literally! She notes “A prayer can be found anywhere, even in the mundane smells that take me back to summers of old and the smells that define summers for me now.” Salvation, Service, and Suffering turns excellent Biblical exegesis into a memorable reflection on suffering at HMS Blog. Taking the mass readings from Sunday (7/22), the post

Modern Day Persecution and Catholic Family Life
    2007-07-19 16:01:25
It is highly unlikely that the average Christian living in a modern Western society would have to give up his life for his faith. But as any committed Christian knows, persecution is in store for anyone who tries to follow Christ and his conscience, formed by the Church’s teachings, to the best of his ability. In modern times, it would seem to me, family life is on the forefront in the Christian’s war with the culture of death. I continue to be unpleasantly surprised by the comments and scorn people place on parents who decide to have more than one child. My mother, who was the 5th of 10 children, told me of several condescending comments people made to her about her parents when she was growing up. Now my wife and I have experienced it too, and we only have two children! What causes eyebrows to be raised in our case is that our children are thirteen months apart, and some people just can’t withhold a condescending comment because of that. I’ve gotten comments like,

Trying To Understand Our Catholic Faith Religious education is a lifelong process. Catholic issues with The Nativity
    2007-06-21 15:27:40
The Hollywood movie, The Nativity, is clearly a flawed portrayal of the birth of Christ. And I thought it was worth pointing out some of the bigger problems the movie has in case you hear questions about it. Overall a significant amount of the movie is simply invented for the sake of creating drama. Instead of using our rich Christian tradition to fill in the holes in the Gospel accounts, they choose to simply invent meaningless scenes that confuse more than educate. This was a flaw in the strategy they used and it really reduced the value of the movie tremendously – it changed it from “A True Story” to “Based on a True Story” in a sense. So here are the issues I had from a Catholic perspective. If I missed anything, please add a comment with your thoughts. Joachim and Anna. Mary’s parents are portrayed as downright hostile to her. These Saints of the Church were supportive and believed by all accounts. But The Nativity destroys their Godly values and makes them simply
