    China's Soft Power
    2008-07-16 18:36:00
Billboard promotes the Rolling Stones, 'A Bigger Bang' concert in Shanghai. As is frequently the case, discussions on China’s growth and influence are mostly limited to concerns about military matters. This other side of China’s growth, known as soft power or “Charm Offensive” relates to their rapidly expanding economy and cunning investment strategies. Indeed, over the past two decades China has been totally transformed, having undergone the most comprehensive national metamorphosis in modern history. Mostly impoverished in 1976 after Mao’s reign, it has emerged into one of the worlds most dynamic economies.Trying to get a grip on how powerful China is — especially when the nebulous, unquantifiable concept of 'soft power' is brought into the discussion — is quite difficult writes Malcolm Cooke. "Is it replacing Japan as the economic centre of Asia? Probably not, in my view. Will it soon challenge the US for global supremacy? Certainly not, in my view. However, one of the

Magnificient Guoliang Tunnel Road in China

Road that does not tolerate any mistakesHave you seen dangerous roads? How dangerous it could be? The are roads that imperil the lives of motorists, or just make it really miserable. Below are the roads that did not quite make the list, but continued to pop up in conversations around the world. It may not"deadly" as such, but certainly require a keen concentration on driving, as the rock walls in many of them are not known to be a forgiving substance. Whoah!!!Hoho!Just see that cliff...Looks like a cave to me..The road shown here is the Guoliang Tunnel in Taihang mountains (China). It has been built by villagers themselves, which is an inspiring story in itself:"Before 1972, the path chiseled into the rock used to be the only access linkingthe village with the outside world. Then the villagers decided to dig a tunnel through the rocky cliff. Led by Shen Mingxin, head of the village, they sold goats and herbs to buy hammers and steel tools. Thirteen strong villagers began the project. I

China, Iran, and the Denuclearization of North Korea
    2008-06-26 20:22:36
IHT: U.S. to remove North Korea from terror list Background As part of a denuclearization deal, North Korea today handed over 60 pages of information on its nuclear power and nuclear weapons program. The move was an important step in the process of the dismantlement of the North’s nuclear program. In return, President Bush announced that his administration would remove the country from its list of state sponsors of terrorism and end some sanctions ‘symbolically’. As said above, this action was only a part of a major denuclearization deal. The agreement came as a result of direct negotiations with North Korea in early 2007 under a new policy from the Bush Administration. The previous policy had limited engagement with North Korea, and stressed isolation and sanctions. However, in 2006, the President defied hawks in his administration and enacted a new policy towards the North, launching full fledged talks with North Korea: 6 party negotiations between North Korea, the host Chin

    2008-06-26 03:49:29
This month, The Road we have Italy in the spotlight. Italy as in "the place I live in", as in "the place I love", but also as in "the place that makes me chuckle". Here is an example why: Italian car maker Fiat apologised to China for a television commercial starring US actor Richard Gere. Fiat acknowledged it "could disturb the sensibility of the Chinese people". The ad shows Gere, a long-time supporter of the Tibetan Independence Movement, drive the group's new Lancia Delta model from Hollywood to Tibet, where he and a child dressed as a Buddhist monk plunge their hands into fresh snow. The slogan that runs with the ad is "The power to be different". The Italian car maker stressed that its advertising had "never been driven by or based on political choices or by a desire to interfere with the internal political system of any country, especially the People's Republic of China". China’s Visa Policy Threatens Olympics Tourism
    2008-06-25 03:15:00
With the Beijing Olympics less than two months away, hotel operators, travel agencies, and foreign businessmen say new Chinese visa restrictions are proving bad for business, casting a pall over Beijing during what was supposed to be a busy and jubilant tourist season leading up to the Olympic Games.Chinese authorities acknowledged putting new visa restrictions in place in May — after foreign embassies reported fewer visas being granted and tighter, sometimes seemingly arbitrary, restrictions. The government did not release guidelines detailing the changes in policy; it often does not. But a foreign ministry spokesman, Qin Gang, said in May that they would be temporary. On Monday, Hu Bin, a visa official at the foreign ministry, said the ministry had no statistics on the number of visa denials, but that the new policies were put in place for “security considerations.”

    Is China's Economy Slowing?
    2008-06-22 21:20:00
by: Michael Pettis posted on: June 19, 2008 Much of the focus in China continues to be on the performance of the stock markets. Yesterday the market bounced around both above and below Friday’s close, before ending the day at 2874, up slightly less than 0.2%. That was the first positive day for the SSE Composite in nearly two weeks (after last week’s 14% decline), but a quick look at the trading patterns and trading volume didn’t seem to indicate much conviction.Wednesday, the market dropped sharply again. It started the day with a little bit of buying – in the first half hour the market traded up nearly 0.7%, but as often happens with any strength, sellers took advantage to unload positions and prices quickly bounced their way down to 2769, down 3.7%, just 30 minutes before the close of day, before staging a late rally to close at 2794, still nearly 2.8% down for the day. This puts us at 6.9% below the 3000 level which we broke last Wednesday and which, supposedly, was the leve

China now leading emitter of Climate Change ...
    2008-06-22 19:22:00
"With bated breath we wait for Gore and DiCaprio’s upcoming films critical of China." Here’s a quick one. If it hasn’t gained official status yet, it will soon. Yet another source reports that China has now “officially” and “clearly” surpassed the United States as the world’s leading emitter of purported climate warming gases. “Worse, China's emissions are likely to continue growing substantially for years to come because they are tied to the country's strong economic growth and its particular mix of industry and power sources, the researchers said.” Read the rest here It is now estimated that China's CO2 emissions are about 14% higher than those of the U.S. putting it at the top of the list of CO2 emitting countries with about a quarter (24%) share in total global CO2 emissions. Imagine of you will, the likely Chinese figure in say, 2025? Can I be bold enough to suggest that apart from the warm and fuzzy emotions it elicits amongst greenies, Kyoto is now – o

It starts with respecting and encouraging other religious beliefs through funding Church restorations.Beijing's main religious venues are making preparations to offer better service during the August Olympiad when the city is expected to see an unprecedented influx of foreigners. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Beijing, known as Nantang to locals, has been refurbished to embrace religious followers from the world over. "Beijing Administration for Religious Affairs allocated a special fund for renovation of the church because of the Olympics being held in the city," said Father Han Wensheng at the cathedral. "There are new floor tiles in the west courtyard, as well as a new wall and revamped chairs." The Roman Catholic Church, whose foundation was established by Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci in 1605, is Beijing's oldest Catholic church. It is possibly the best known to foreigners as it has an English-langua

Made in China gets even more toxic
    2008-06-20 03:26:00
Remember what happened to the toys ‘outsourced’ to China by US toy giant Mattel? They were recalled – as they contained toxic chemicals. Now, after Mattel, it’s the turn of Hamleys, Britain’s biggest toy store, to withdraw children’s jewellery imported from China. Reason? The jewellery contained alarmingly high levels of lead – that could damage the brain, and even become fatal. London’s The Sunday Times claimed that out of 24 units of children’s jewellery bought (in London and Birmingham) as many as eight tested positive for high levels of lead. Of these eight, six had one or more components with more than 80% lead; the recommended international safety limit is 0.06%. In media reports, Paul Currie, trading director at Hamleys, was quoted as saying: “High levels of lead in children’s jewellery are totally unacceptable because this is a product that comes into contact with children.” What’s going on guys? After all, this is no kids’ stuff at all.For Complete

Brief Overview of China’s Financial System
    2008-06-17 09:20:43
Prior to 1949, the financial system of China was very well developed. The earliest form of capitalism can be seen at the times of the late Ming Dynasty (17th century), when commerce was initiated in the Zhejiang-Jiangsu area and further developed during the Qing Dynasty (17th century to early 20th century). Late Qing China had [...]

Spain Supports China and the Olympics
    2008-06-17 09:07:54
Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos Sunday reaffirmed the support of the Spanish government for the Olympic Games in Beijing and said he believed the event will be "a great success." Boycotting the Olympic Games goes against the spirit of concord of the games, Moratinos told a joint press conference with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi after their talks. Moratinos said an official Spanish delegation will attend the opening ceremony of the games on Aug. 8. Yang thanked Spain's support for the Olympic Games and said he is against politicizing the event. Yang also thanked Spain for the aid and sympathy it offered following the earthquake in southwest China, saying it showed the "deep feeling of friendship" between the two governments and peoples. Yang is on a European tour and will also visit Slovenia, which holds the current rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), Italy and EU headquarters in Brussels. Things to do in China at the Olympics
    2008-06-17 00:59:55
One other thing that China has recently been known for besides the fact that they will be Olympics hosts this 2008 is that they produce millions and millions of imitation, counterfeit and sometimes replica products. There has already been a comical yet true "saying" with regard to China's industrial power and it goes like "God made the earth, everything else is made in China!" Sad, funny and almost true. Presently, most products you may see on your market shelves will bear the mark made in China. When you go to China this year, it will be an opportunity for you to snap up on some really neat and cheap stuff that you have see back home to sell for hundreds of dollars like original designer sunglasses. In the U.S., it is strictly forbidden to buy and sell counterfeit products but you violate no law when you buy a replica. Sometimes, counterfeit and replica are often mistaken for the same thing but there's a big difference. This I found while visiting a Wholesale Replica Sunglasses online

    China: preocupación y esperanza
    2008-06-12 07:32:00

    2008-06-11 03:18:00
Japan's No.2 automaker had suspended production at two major car factories and an engine plant in the southern city of Guangzhou due to flooding from heavy rains. It said last week the factory held with Dongfeng in the central Chinese city of Wuhan could also be suspended in the event of a supply bottleneck. [ID:nT251332] The engine factory in Guangzhou, also owned jointly with Dongfeng, supplies some engine parts to the Wuhan factory, which builds CR-V sport utility vehicles and Civic sedan models. Honda said it was unclear how much damage, if any, the facilities in Guangzhou suffered from the flooding. The engine factory and one of the car factories were suspended for four days last week. The other car plant was undamaged but shuttered for two days since engine supply was disrupted. The two car factories, run jointly with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co, build the Accord, Odyssey, Fit and City models and have a combined annual production capacity of 360,000 vehicl

CHINA: 'Food Scarcity Creating New World Order'
    2008-06-04 17:06:00
BEIJING, Jun 4 (IPS) - Unprecedented food scarcity is beginning to dictate the rules of a new political order where individual countries are scrambling to secure their own food supplies with little concern for the rest of the world, says the founder of the Earth Policy Institute. Recent manifestations of national food insecurity like export restrictions imposed by some grain-producing countries are the troublesome portents of an "entirely new chapter in the book of food security," Lester Brown told foreign correspondents in Beijing on Tuesday. "We are in the midst of the most severe food crisis in the world’s history," Brown said. "This is not your mother’s food shortage... but a chronically tight food situation, a serious and long-term problem.’’ Politicians have been meeting in Rome to find global solutions to soaring food prices and civil unrest caused by food shortages, but in reality many countries are already acting unilaterally to secure supplies for the future.
