    Traditional Chinese Medicine
    2008-08-17 06:53:00
Traditional Chinese Medicine stands strong on thousands of years of history, yet it only arrived in the U.S. in the last thirty years. In the early 1970's, following Nixon's visit to China, acupuncture became popular in the U.S. for a brief period, specifically for use in pain relief. But the response from skeptics was swift, with an effort to outlaw it.There were no empirical data, no double-blind studies, no scientific proof, they argued, and therefore acupuncture had to be simply the placebo effect at work. As of the turn of the millennium, however, there is a threshold level of research showing such a significant benefit of Traditional Chinese Medicine over placebo that it is even being integrated to some extent into allopathic practices. Chinese spend big on real estate
    2008-08-15 13:19:00
SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- China's National Statistics Bureau has reported that spending on real estate and other fixed urban assets rose 27.3 percent in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period a year ago, accelerating amid reconstruction of areas devastated by May's earthquake. The bureau's report Friday says investment in construction, factory equipment and other such assets totaled 7.2 trillion yuan (US$1.1 trillion) in January-July.The growth rate was above the 26.8 percent rise in such spending in the first half of the year.Construction spending also increased amid efforts to rebuild following the May earthquake that killed nearly 70,000 people and left 5 million homeless.

Doubt Over Ages Of Chinese Gymnasts
    2008-08-15 05:35:31
Before I begin my rant. Allow me to explain the way the medal-ranking system works in the Olympics. The system is weighted. Meaning that according to the ranking system, a gold medal is harder to achieve than a bronze (duh). So in theory, a large number of gold medals would place you higher on the [...]

    Chinese cheating
    2008-08-13 04:04:15
Made in China now includes fakes and faking. The news that the Olympic organisers decided to use the voice of a young girl deemed to be "unattractive" but put a "pretty" girl before the audience to mime the song is very distasteful. The musical director Chen Qigang said that "the reason for this is that we must put our country's interest first" which implies that only beautiful people can go on TV.Does Mr Chen think that anybody outside China would have thought "blimey, what an unattractive little girl!" as they sat glued to the spectacle before them. He must be mad, because nobody would have thought other than "what a lovely voice" or something similar. All he has done is make China look petty and pernickety and rather nasty. And did he think that this would be kept quiet for long? Not whilst the Olympics are on, as all manner of news is moving around. Chinese cheating indeed!

Young Chinese Olympic Gymnasts Reduce Olympic Games To Childsplay
    2008-08-12 15:22:00
They bring serious threat to the U.S. gymnastic team, yet they have everybody talking for a different reason: China's Olympic gymnasts looks young... very young. They may not only young, but be young too, according to sources. The New York Times' Harvey Araton questioned the seemingly young girl's age and went on to suggest what is happening: "When in North America, do as the North Americans do (overreact). When in China, do nothing. For better or worse, these are the shrug-and-don’t-tell Olympics, undoubtedly because it would be considered impolitic to embarrass the Chinese after they went to such great expense to throw the world this lavish party."MSNBC's coverage of the events suggested that the girls began to train for this Olympic quest when they were only 3 years old. What country or parent would drive their children to this kind of success? The Chinese gymnasts are probably not even old enough to understand the success of their careers, or even possibly the many schooling oppo

The Chinese Are Getting Fat Too!
    2008-08-11 00:08:00
Blame it on the heavily anticipated Beijing Olympics or the summer fun-flick Kung Fu Panda, all things China have been thrust into international spotlight. While China is doing all it can to feed the rest of the world, back home it is obesity and excess weight that is making the Chinese rethink their menu. Fat has become a national threat with analysts suggesting that the dairy and meat-rich diet could pose a serious problem to many Chinese. With more than a quarter of the adult population of China overweight or obese, the country is a few notches away from Mexico on the developing countries list. Nutritionists blame these rising levels on the disappearance of the classical Chinese diet that was rich in carbohydrates and veggies and low on animal products. Looks like this is one country that needs to spend some serious time and money on exercise or liposuction surgery. Incidentally, the fat panda voiced by Jack Black (who is also a bit on the heavy side) in Kung Fu Panda has helped

    Chinese diet is so healthy

Use your noodle: The real Chinese diet is so healthy it could solve the West's obesity crisisSophie Morris explains how it works - and nutritionists give their verdictChinese food has a bad reputation in the UK. The rice-heavy meals and fatty meat dishes are thought to lead straight to obesity and heart disease. But properly prepared, says Chinese food expert Lorraine Clissold, the very opposite is true: the Chinese way of eating is healthy and fulfilling, fights illness and prolongs life. She also insists, in her book Why the Chinese Don't Count Calories, that a real Chinese diet won't make you fat, and that the rising levels of obesity observable in China are in fact caused by sugary, overprocessed Western food. Here are some of her Chinese dietary secrets – and the verdict of two Western nutrition experts, Patrick Holford and Ian Marber.1. Stop counting calories The Chinese don't have a word for "calories". They view food as nourishment, not potential weight gain. A 1990 survey fo

    ABC Chinese Restaurant
    2008-06-21 15:36:00
We missed Father's Day while we were on honeymoon so we made sure to celebrate soon after our return. We had planned to go for Peking duck but the restaurant was booked for the night, a second choice had a long wait, and we ended up at ABC Chinese Restaurant ABC Chinese Restaurant. All because most of Chinatown doesn't take reservations. There's always a down side right. It ended up being a pretty average Cantonese style restaurant, with a standard menu, nothing exciting but nothing bad either. We started with a Beef and Egg Drop Soup, which was a tad too salty, but everyone was so hungry, we devoured it.Beef with Chinese Broccoli was tasty but oily, common of Cantonese food.Salt and Pepper Shrimp is a bit different here. These were completely shelled, coated, and fried. The coating was so light and crispy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, had snap, and were very meaty. This was Lon's favorite dish of the night. The shrimp were very good, but he loved the fried vermicelli, jalapenos, a
