Two-Face Revealed! The Spirit Haunts This Christmas! Iron Man 2, and Other Avengers Movies Announced! And, Doom 4 in Development!
    2008-05-07 18:24:00
    - Two-Face, as played by Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight Returns, has been revealed, as posted by figures.com. I must say... it's pretty disgusting. Keep in mind that Harvey Dent's face is burned with acid, so this seems...fairly believable, I'd say.- It's the Spirit of Christmas. It's been announced that Frank Miller's rendition of Will Eisner's The Spirit has been pushed up from January 13, to Christmas; THIS year. The movie features Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Dan Lauria, Jaime King, Paz Vega and Louis Lombardi.A lot of fans are looking forward to this movie, but there are a lot of detractors too, who don't like the changes Miller is making from Eisner's work. Those are always legitimate causes for concern, but I'll reserve judgment until the movie is released. After all, look at all the grand changes made to Spider-Man and Batman...Source: Dark Horizons- It's the Age of the Avengers. Marvel is already making sure Iro

Christmas Vacation Cruise Getaway Without Holiday Preparations
    2008-04-23 14:19:34
Christmas season can be an exhausting time for all the Christmas decorations, shopping, meal preparations and other activities associated with the busy, but joyous season. If you want to relax, leave the preparations for other families and take a break, a Christmas vacation cruise is a perfect getaway for you and your family.More and more cruise lines are providing new ways for families to spend their holidays with them. A good thing about Christmas vacation cruises is that your whole clan can join the trip and share different activities on-board and at port stops, but each family will still have their own, private cabin. Christmas Vacation Cruises also provide entertainment for children on-board. So if you are worried that your kids wont be given their yearly wish to Santa Claus, most cruise lines provide an on-board Santa for children. Your teens could also enjoy Christmas and New Years Eve parties, various holiday contests and craft making. If you are giving a Christmas cruise vacat

By: The Legend?Christmas Time, Mistletoe and Wine? How many times have you heard this so far and its only November? A few I?ll bet, but with Christmas seemingly becoming earlier to us each year, we will no doubt feel the need to get ahead with our present and food buying. This though only leads to us spending more than we should. This is because with the shops full of decorations and Christmas tunes, the stores are dictating to us that we have to buy our gifts now, which will mean by the time December has come and gone. We would have spent more over the 2-month period that the shops have been full of Christmas cheer. This is not all bah! Humbug.Personally for the occasion alone and seeing the kids faces when they open their presents on Christmas morning, as Christmas is a special time of year that for the day makes all the preparation and spending all worth while. But that doesn?t mean that it comes without cost and in some cases more of a cost than folk can ill afford. Traffic Methods I Used before Christmas
    2008-02-01 00:37:00
Last time I talked about the traffic to my blog has increased a lot. Although I am not a professional in driving traffic yet, I am willing to share what kind of traffic strategy I am using. These are not the secret ones, and I am sure you also know them very well. 1. Keep your blog fresh. I made a one or couple of post every week starting December 25.2. Participate and give comments to high traffic blogs as you can expect some of their visitors will be coming to your backyard. Remember, commenting putting a one way inbound links.3. Make a post discussing the post made by other high traffic blogs then use trackback.4. Submit your post to digg, reddit, and netscape. And when you submit, make sure your title is something intriguing5. Use Ping and ping after every new post.6. Do link exchange with complementary theme blogs and websites.7. Use technorati tags and use it abundantly.8. Be hunger and keep learning about blog promotion. There are other traffic building techniques I used but ther

Stimulus Bill Turning Into A Christmas Tree
    2008-01-30 00:00:00
The Senate will likely cave to the demands of AARP and others to expand the stimulus to include rebates to elderly Americans who pay little or no taxes (and the rebates dropping from $600 to $500 to keep the cost the same). As we noted:When dealing with a policy that is designed primarily to stimulate the economy, any arbitrary policy can almost be justified to some degree. But what this shows is that there is a problem in trying to use the tax code as the main vehicle for fiscal stimulus and/or social policy. Everyone is always going to complain that they are being shortchanged, despite the fact that getting money to everyone is difficult. On second thought... maybe we should just send helicopters over every major city in the country and drop out $20 bills. And we can even make AARP happy by putting double the money in the helicopters that fly over golf courses in Florida and Arizona. Because the stimulus bill enjoys such broad congressional support, it's a magnet for all sorts of silliness to be attached to it (the term is a "Christmas tree" bill). The Senate may seek to add additional unemployment benefits. A provision has been added to prevent a Child Death Tax. Some are now insisting on an amendment to prevent illegal immigrants from getting rebate checks. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) think we should spend the money on infrastructure. The REALTORS® are happy with the stimulus bill, though. Contrast that with the Coalition [of Economists] Against Fiscal Stimulus, and those normally anti-tax congressmen who voted against it in the House. AARP's success at amending the bill makes this Canadian cartoon from 1985 seem apt:

Women’s Handbags, Perfect Gift this Christmas
    2008-01-15 23:05:07
A new trend of handbag is what most women always catch their attention and interest. Since they have strong passion for different stylish handbags, they do love changing and matching them with their outfit all the time.A handbag is an essential and fashionable item to carry for most women who are conscious and eye-detailed to their fashion outlook. They are said to be incomplete without wearing handbag because it seems that something is missing on their outfit if they don't come along with this important fashion accessory. On the other hand, they can be looked best as they can be if they carry a handbag on their body, most especially if it's a designer handbag. That's because, handbag makes their outfit complete and helps them achieve a fascinating and captivating fashion style they most wanted. They also consider it as a complement partner for their clothing such as shoes, jeans, skirts, blouses and dresses because it enhances their look when they carry a handbag.Since handbag is an excellent indicator of women’s fashion preferences, it is considered as a perfect present this holiday season for all the women who have special place in your heart. It is also an ideal choice as a special gift for them because it can be personalized based on their desire, taste and personality through the help of various selections of styles, type, colors and designs to choose from.Giving a handbag as a personal gift for your mom, sisters, girlfriends and friends is no doubt a practical way of making them extra special, since it has become their compulsory accessory as they need to carry large amount of significant things such as files for their business related works, books for their school works, girl stuffs such as make up for their hang outs and other valuable tech stuffs such as cell phones and ipod that are part of their daily lifestyle. Just be sure to choose a handbag that matches to their likes and needs and it will assure you that they will appreciate the effort you've

    Snap shots during Christmas 2007
    2008-01-15 09:58:26
Hi everyone, I just had some time to sit down and edit my pictures. So here I am sharing some of the pictures I took during the holidays; Christmas. I wanted my husband to be in the picture but he refused and said, "Maybe later" until it was too late and he didn't get to be with us. Well, perhaps next Christmas we can all get together for a good family portrait. As for our Christmas, we bought some toys for our children as usual and had a good dinner with a family member and along with a friend. My husband and I decided not to buy any present for each other (we didn't exchange gifts-I guess he learned his lesson that I don't know much about what to give him because the last time I gave him colognes for women and not for men, he said...LOL), and just showered our children with toys instead, my husband did most of the shopping. He bought quite a lot so he quickly ran out of money-he was broke in no time after Christmas and I bet like everyone else that over spends...LOL, during the holidays. Tiana and Hannah's big brother-my husband's son bought them lots and lots of good stuff, too, and my husband's friend left them some presents as well. Surely, Santa over spent and gave so much for our children to get up and be excited on Christmas morning. So our children definitely received toys for Christmas. Tiana tried to be in her best behavior knowing that Santa will only pass by our house without leaving anything if she is ever naughty...LOL. All we had to say is "No Santa for you!"...LOL.Well, anyway, enjoy the show, the pictures are what I have taken with our old digi-cam through a self-timer, so with each snap I had to grab my children for the picture as they are always all the place playing-not paying attention especially the little one fussing. Okay, till next time!

    Christmas Gifts For Me
    2008-01-09 00:37:00
I did not post my Christmas gift here immediately that I received from my husband and from his family as I had a difficulty accessing the internet when I was away from our house. I brought my laptop but sometimes I have a problem with the internet connection.I received some gifts from my parents in law. Their gift for me was from bath and body works such as lotion, hand cream, bacterial hand soap. I got some other stuff also like lip balm, light key chain, toothbrush, dental floss, t-shirts, jackets, socks, mittens, gift cards and others. I love my gift from bath and body works especially the lotion and hand cream, because sometimes my skin is dry and it helps by using a lotion or a hand cream. So, I am thankful they gave me these kinds of gifts to me. It is such a pleasure receiving a gift from somebody else especially the necessities of our daily needs, as those I mentioned above I need them all.The picture here was my gifts on Christmas day

    Christmas Reviews: Unreal Tournament III
    2008-01-06 20:41:46
The deathmatch king has returned in it's 3rd reincarnation. The Unreal Tournament franchise has been known for it's ultra fast paced, no mercy gameplay, and Unreal Tournament III is no different. There are both Single, and Multi-player modes, though if you have heard of Unreal Tournament at all you will know that it is basically a multiplayer game. The single-player side is more or less multi-player but with computer enemies, so there really isn't much difference aside from having to use the Internet to play against other people. I would guess the graphics could be great, but as I mentioned in my Call of Duty 4 review, I don't have that great of a PC. It can run the game, just not that well. But if you have any of the newer high-end graphics cards from ATI or nVidia, then you'll be fine. The map design is amazing, and genius. No two areas look alike at all, and with multi-level buildings, teleporters, and awesome power-ups skewered across each map, you will never get tired of looking at the landscapes. Gameplay is very fun, and intense. There are around 7 game modes. You have the typical Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and with new modes like Warfare, and Vehicle Capture the Flag, which add vehicle elements to the game. All are great fun, and will not disappoint. This game, like no other, is extremely fast paced, and in no way realistic. If you stand in place for a mere second you are bound to be killed. The weapons are really great as well, from chemical launching Bioguns, to the classic rocket launcher, Unreal fans will love the arsenal. Though there are many game types and weapons and such, unfortunately there aren't as many people playing online on the PC as I would like. For every game type, or at least the ones I have checked, there are maybe 4 or 5 servers with a decent amount of people in them. Overall it is a great game, but it could be better. Maybe more game modes, and more people playing would greatly increase my wanting to play the

    The Twelfth Day of Christmas
    2008-01-06 00:27:00
January 6 “On the Twelfth Day of ChristmasMy true love gave to meTwelve drummers drumming ” I had to save the best till last, and present my dozen with a fanfare of drums (is that musicalogically correct?). Pies, of course. I would like to offer you a dozen pies. Some you have met before, but may have forgotten. Some are new, just to delight you. They are all – lets say – a little unusual. Hard to find nowadays. Waiting to be rediscovered and molecular gastronomised. 1. Pie of Bull’s Testicles. 2. Pies with live birds and frogs.3. Blood Pie.4. Calf’s Head Pie.5. Old Maid’s Pie6. Parrot Pie.7. Burr Pie.… the rest [of the carcass after the main joints are removed] are brought to market with the hide, and are there taken out by poor women, who also cut off some bits of flesh that lie by the horns, called burrs, with these are made pyes … (Houghton, John . A collection for the improvement of husbandry and trade, 1727) 8. A Pan-pie made of Carps-roes and Tongues. The Tongues and Roes of the Carps must be laid in order upon a piece of fine Paste, in the bottom of the Pan; season’d with Pepper, Salt, Nutmeg, fine Herbs, Chibbols, Morilles, common Mushrooms, Truffles and sweet Butter. Then, all being cover’d with a Lid of the same Paste, let the Pie be bak’d with a gently Fire, and serv’d up with Lemmon-juice.[Massialot. Court and Country Cook. 1702] 9. Amblongus Pie. Sadly, amblongusses don’t actually exist. They have not been eaten to extinction, they have never existed - apart from in the imagination of Edward Lear. Should they one day be made flesh, here is his recipe for them. Take 4 pounds (say 4 ½ pounds) of fresh Amblongusses, and put them in a small pipkin.Cover them with water and boil them for 8 hours incessantly, after which add 2 pints of new milk, and proceed to boil for 4 hours more. When you have ascertained that the Amblongusses are quite soft, take them out and place them in

    The Eleventh Day of Christmas
    2008-01-06 00:20:00
January 5 .... well, it is a little late, but better late than never. And I think it is still January 5 in some parts of the world. “On the eleventh day of ChristmasMy true love gave to meEleven pipers piping …” One of the most important gigs that a piper gets is to pipe in the Chieftain o’the Pudding Race (haggis) on Burns Night (January 25). The Scots have certainly got the idea right, even if most of the rest of the world is confused and concerned about haggis. All of the other incarnations of ‘pudding’ should be equally valued and so honoured – and there are many incarnations indeed. The word ‘pudding’ comes from the Anglo-Norman bodeyn or bodin (think modern French boudin), meaning entrails, hence is a legacy of 1066 and all that. The word may originally have referred to ‘a stuffed entrail or sausage’, but it pretty soon got applied to the reverse anatomical concept of ‘a stuffing made of a mixture of minced meat, suet, oatmeal, seasoning, etc, and roasted within the body of the animal (so that we can have a hare with a pudding in its bellye). I am not entirely sure of the difference between a boudin and a saucisson (clearly I need to spend more time in France), but I am quite certain that in English, not all puddings are sausages. The French, having an inadequate language to describe the sweet delights that the English consider ‘puddings’, were forced to borrow it back again, so that they can made plum poutinge at Christmas. From its sausagy start the pudding was adapted fairly rapidly to ‘a sweet or savoury dish with a farinaceous base – boiled, steamed or baked, especially containing suet’, and in British hearts to any sweet dish at all, delicate or solid. The family also branched out to pudding-cake (cake which is boiled or steamed) and pudding-pie (pie without the crust). If you are onto a good thing, rename everything in its honour. Today’s recipe is from My Daily Dinner Cookery Book: the work of a pr

Its dead, very little to do and I am bored, I have gone through all of my RSS feeds, gone though digg, listened to some music, aimlessly surfed all day and that is it, I am all Webbed out, maybe if I draw eyes on my eyelids, I can get away with an hours sleep in before I go home.

    Christmas Ruminations and Other Stuff
    2008-01-03 21:25:00
Alright, I know I've been talking a lot about stuff that isn't really genre related (stuff about me, stuff about shopping, stuff about whatever), so, this will be the last post about 'me' type stuff for a while. I am working on a huge list of links I've acquired over the last few weeks of stuff that might interest you guys. So here goes the last bit of stuff about 'me':I've added a post that I placed so it is way in the bottom that is basically information about what I will review and the like. The link is on the left over there at the top, or go here. Basically I wanted to be very clear about what I want to review so publishers or authors or even editors know and perhaps will contact me. I like doing reviews!I have three interviews coming up (I've been yapping about them for forever). Dana Copithorne emailed me to let me know she got caught up in some school stuff and that she's working on things, but I also have submitted questions to Dave A. Law who was one of the editors of The Complete Guide to Writing Science Fiction Volume One, and also to Jennifer Rahn who wrote The Longevity Thesis. Hopefully I'll have those interviews this month. *crosses fingers*I'm going to be starting The Spellweaver of Dern this month at some point. Expect the first chapter by the end of the month. I'm thinking of the best way to start the story right now. I know what's going to happen in the first quarter, I just don't know where would be the best place to start--right at the end of the WISB or after some time has lapsed.School starts next Tuesday! I'm somewhat excited and bummed at the same time. I didn't know that enrollment was open until seven days after, so all the courses I had originally wanted to take were full, and then I discovered too late that there are actually two courses that are on science fiction and I don't think I can take them because they may not apply to my literature degree, which irritates me. I'm going to talk with a counselor

    The Tenth Day of Christmas
    2008-01-03 14:09:00
January 4 “On the tenth day of Christmasmy true love gave to meTen lords a-leaping” Whatever has made the lords leap about has to be our choice for the day, and it seems reasonable to assume it is too much (or just enough?) Christmas spirit of the alcoholic beverage kind. Christmas does seem to be the time to gild the lilies, culinarily speaking, and beverages are no exception. Here in hot Queensland, the only requirement of a Christmas beer is that it be long and very very cold. It is amazing what can be done with a simple beer or ale however, if the weather makes you so inclined. Egg nogs and egg flips are drinks that you have when you really want custard. They are sometimes warm, sometimes cold, and are an easy way to alcohol-enhance your beer (or ale). Here are a few examples: Egg Flip. Put a quart of ale in a tinned saucepan on the fire to boil; in the mean time, beat up the yolks of four, with the whites of two eggs, adding four table-spoonfuls of brown sugar and a little nutmeg; pour on the ale by degrees, beating up, so as to prevent the mixture from curdling; then pour back and forward repeatedly from vessel to vessel, raising the hand to as great a height as possible - which process produces the smoothness and frothing essential to the good quality of the flip. This is excellent for a cold, and, from its fleecy appearance, is sometimes designated " a yard of flannel."[How to Mix Drinks: Or, The Bon-vivant's Companion, Containing ... Directions ... Jerry Thomas, Christian Schultz; 1862] Rum-Fustian.A drink made with the yolks of twelve eggs, a quart of strong home-brewed beer, a bottle of white wine, half a pint of gin, a grated nutmeg, the juice from the peel of a lemon, a small quantity of cinnamon, and sugar sufficient to sweeten it.[Dictionary of obsolete and provincial English, Thomas Wright 1857] Or, you can leave out the beer altogether of course, and go straight for the spirituous drinking custard. Peppermint and Vanilla Butter Cookies (Inspired by Candy Canes for Christmas
    2008-01-02 17:45:39
Just as wreaths, stockings and mistletoes signify the spirit of christmas, cookies and cakes do their part in spreading the joy all around. As the festival of christmas is just a few days away, people have started baking goodies and packing them in decorative tin boxes and wrapping papers, shipping them across to their loved ones and friends, wishing them joy and success in the days to come. Some flavors and smells reign the kitchens in these festive days, including, but not limited to chocolate, peppermint, vanilla, and of course, gingerbread! Joining in the fun and having found a reason to bake more often, I decided to go for a batch of these beautiful pink and white Swirl Cookies flavored with peppermint and vanilla. I love the candy canes and the beautiful ribbon patterns that they form, but I can't take too much of peppermint in one go. So here's the perfect solution, these basic sugar cookies, with a hint of peppermint and all the goodness of the lovely colors.Ingredients1 cup

    The Ninth Day of Christmas
    2008-01-02 14:50:00
January 3 ... “On the ninth day of ChristmasMy true love gave to meNine ladies dancing” A ‘Lady’ is an elegant woman - aristocratic really - married to ‘a Lord’, who has no job and wears her pearls to breakfast and has servants so she never needs (or wants) to know what goes on in the kitchen – right? Without the capital ‘L’, a lady is a refined, well mannered female, married to a gentleman, who never discusses money, and is always perfectly groomed – never messy and besmirched with flour and eggs – right? Originally a ‘Lady’ was the ‘loaf-kneader’, meaning in its larger context the one who is responsible for the household, as identified by its most important product - bread. The word comes from the Teutonic word hláf meaning a loaf, combined with the suffix meaning to knead. A ‘Lord’, on the other hand, means the ‘loaf-keeper’, and denotes his responsibility to provide ‘bread’ (in its larger context meaning ‘food’) to those dependent upon him – family, servants, tenants, guests, and the poor. So – the words lady, lord, and loaf all have the same origin, making our choice today quite obvious. ‘On the ninth day of Christmas,My good friend gave to meNine loaves a-rising’ In my browsing to find an interesting recipe for today, I came across some fascinating old bread names, including – wait for it – ‘Bitchiness Bread’! Apparently it is (or was) made with a thin batter (unfermented) made with oats, and cooked into thin soft cakes on a griddle, and is a specialty of Lancashire in the North of England. If anyone can shed any light on the naming of this I would be delighted, as the OED is no help at all. Realistically, most of us today feel that we don’t have the time or expertise to make bread - which is not realistic at all as the total human time involved in making bread is minimal, and bread dough is very forgiving. There are several ‘real’ breads in the recipe archive,

Christmas Reviews: Call of Duty 4
    2008-01-01 20:34:50
There has been nothing but praise for this game, and that is for a good reason. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC) is a little piece of perfection. It strays from the Call of Duty series' main trail by switching from a World War II based game, to more modern combat. Throughout the single-player missions you are either a soldier with England, or US. (It switches randomly in the story, my countries may be off...). You fight through many battles, all of which are of reasonable length and difficulty. From what I have heard, the single-player campaign is on the short side, but still, I think it is very solid. Good story, good replay ability, etc. The graphics are great for what my computer is, but I'm sure they could be much better on a different machine or an Xbox 360/PS3. I only have a 2.8 GHZ processor, 1GB RAM and a GeForce 7600GS graphics card, so I can only run it on medium settings. But to me, it still looks really good. On to the multiplayer...This is where the game truly shines.

    The Eighth Day of Christmas.
    2008-01-01 14:15:00
January 2 “On the Eighth Day of ChristmasMy true love gave to meEight Maids a-milking” This one is easy. What would a food song be without cheese? Cheese, as Clifton Fadiman said, is milk’s leap toward immortality. It is one of the oldest ‘made’ foods in the world, and of infinite, wonderful variety. Only vegans can resist, and I truly don’t know how they do it. Very few of us make our own cheese - it requires the time, space, attention, and constant environmental conditions that are all but impossible to achieve in the modern home. It is easy enough to make the yoghurt ‘cheese’ or labneh beloved of the Middle East; there are only three steps (1) place yoghurt in a sieve lined with muslin, or one of those thin disposeable cleaning cloths, or a coffee filter, (2) leave until the whey is mostly drained out, and (3) eat. It should be possible to go a little bit further and make the little French cheeses called angelots at home. I have selected these for their angelic name, being suitable as it is, for the Christmas season. The name of the cheese comes, they say, from them being stamped with a gold coin called an angelot, whose name is a diminutive of angele, the French word for angel. The coin was originally struck by Louis XI, and got its name from the image it bore of St. Michael (of All Angels) and the dragon. Here is a seventeenth century recipe for this angelic cheese. You don’t have to embark on any great odyssey to find rennet - old fashioned junket tablets (the unflavoured ones) contain the same enzyme, and some supermarkets still stock them. To make angellets.Take a quart of new Milk & a pint of Cream, & put them together with a little Runnet, and when it is come well [ie curdled], take it up with a spoon & put it into the Vate softly and let it stand 2 days till it is pretty stiff, then slip it out & salt it a little at both ends, and when you think it is salt enough, set it a drying, an wipe them, an

    A Christmas Collage of Memories
    2007-12-31 19:26:00
This Christmas has been such a gift for our family - or I should really say, a lavish pile of gifts that we still haven't finished unwrapping. Moment after moment, indelibly stamped on our hearts as we tug at the ribbons with smiles a mile wide. It has been the Christmas longed for, hoped for, prayed for. The one we wept over so many times in hospitals or while cradling a sick child in our arms as we lamented its loss.Although we started out the Christmas season with pneumonia, strep throat, and ER visits, Christmas itself, was pure undiluted joy. We find ourselves still a bit heady with it, as it's rather unfamiliar territory, but all the while willing ourselves not to be looking around for the threat of a dropping shoe. So we didn't look for one - not even a tiny little peek. We just sat back and soaked it all in like dessicated sponges with our hearts full to overflowing. I can say, just as we have always said, even in the midst of tragedy, that God is good - and breathtakingly faithful. And once again, I am unable to pick a single moment for Melody's weekly "The Gift of Every Moment" post for December. So instead, I will share a virtual collage of some of our favorite moments that twirled into our beautiful Christmas with the individual beauty and whimsy of a flurry of Christmas snowflakes...A beautiful Christmas Eve at Jacqui and Kyle's great grandparent's house - What a joy that I still have my dear grandmother to make Christmas memories with!Christmas morning at Ken's parents house - And Jacqui sneaking an early peek at the stockings!Kyle peeking out the window at his second Christmas morning in the world.Kyle making us laugh after finding an old pair of Grandpa's glasses frames. If it has wheels, it's the best Christmas present ever! At least in Kyle's book.Late Christmas Morning at my parent's house. Jacqui singing happy birthday to Jesus with her cousins, James and Jonathan. The Seventh Day of Christmas.
    2007-12-31 16:45:00
January 1 .... “On the Seventh Day of Christmas,My true love gave to meSeven swans a swimming …” Swans just wont do for the new version of the song – not legal, not tasty (they say) and too beautiful. If you really want to know how it used to be done, you can find out how to roast a swan from a previous story. It was usually served for effect rather than for taste – an expensive but not delicious bird stuffed back into its skin and feathers to impress the guests with the host’s wealth and power. We might stick with the aquatic theme for the day with seven fish, brought to our kitchens swimmingly fresh. Today is also New Years Day, the Day that the Eternally Optimistic (or Eternally Deluded) amonst us make Resolutions. Resolutions always have some sense of penance associated with them – I am not sure why this is. No-one seems to resolve to Eat More Chocolate or Drink Better Wine or Do More Shopping. A fairly universal resolution involves Getting Healthier – which involves Eating Less, or at least Eating Better, and Doing More Exercise. I therefore feel obliged to suggest a healthy (but historical) way of cooking fish. As it turns out, our source will also be appropriate if your Resolution has an Economic (i.e Save Money or Spend Less) theme. Nicolas Soyer, grandson of the great Alexis Soyer, pioneered, or perhaps promoted Paper- Bag Cookery in a book written in 1911. There was a line of commercial paper bags sold for the purpose, but baking paper of the parchment kind folded bagwise around the food usually works pretty well. Whitefish Fines Herbes.Take two whitefish of fair size, get the fishmonger to bone them. Fill the cavity with half a teaspoonful of mixed finely minced chives or shallot and parsley, season to taste with salt and pepper and a tiny squeeze of lemon juice. Put into a well-greased bag, and bake for 15 minutes. Then dish up on a very hot dish, pour the liquor from the fish into the center of each and serve at once.

    Christmas Reviews: Heavenly Sword
    2007-12-31 02:45:03
I will start out this review of Heavenly Sword for the PS3 by saying that if you like any sort of action games, this is for you. Heavenly Sword combines a traditional hack and slash action game with stylized ninja style combat as well as God of War like timing attacks. In the game you are Nariko, the daughter of the leader of your "clan". You are the only one that can use the Heavenly Sword, so you must save your people. There are a lot of cutscenes in this game, but man do they look good. It may seem boring to some, but I would think this game as an interactive movie more than a video game. Combat is fairly simple, a button for different types of attacks. The cool thing is that when you hold L1 and press attack buttons, you use a variety of ranged attacks. When you hold R1, you do stronger but slower attacks. And when you don't hold either, you do fast attacks. This makes for a great variety of gameplay styles. Perhaps my favorite part of the game is the implementation of the SIXAXIS

    Christmas Reviews: Motorstorm
    2007-12-31 02:43:38
Usually, the games that come bundled with consoles aren't the greatest games. This isn't the case with the 80GB PS3's bundled game Motorstorm. This racing game pits you against the rugged terrain of what looks like somewhere in Utah or Nevada or some desert area like that. There are many different styles of vehicles to choose from. You can choose the light wieght and speedy bikes, to the slow and heavy big rigs. From dune buggys to trucks. From ATVs to rally cars. You name it, if a car can go offroad, it's in this game. The graphics are very nice, though, with my old standard definition TV I know I'm not experiencing the graphics to their full potential, but still they are phenomenal. Gameplay is very well done. Each vehicle performs very differently, and each will be difficult to master. Physics are very well done, it's easier to crash on bikes than it is on big rigs. Crashes look great too, parts flying everywhere, and slow motion to boot. You can control your vehicles with eit

    After Christmas
    2007-12-31 01:35:49
We had our Christmas trees and other Christmas decorations down today. I love decorations but taking them down and arranging them back for storage is much more tiring than putting them up for display. Did I mention heavy too? ARg! This job is a pain in the butt! One thing I noticed, they're getting merrier each year. It's my fault though, I have to stop myself from buying after Christmas decoration sales. Sometimes I can't help it. Malls are giving great deals. Many of them have stuffs sale for 60% to 75% off the price. Huh! can't beat that. Like earlier today, I done bought some Christmas figurines, Santas and snowmen. I always tell myself not to buy anymore stuffs but when I saw them, they were so pretty and cheap, I thought I got to have them. Hehehe! I love pretty yet cheap stuffs. These decors don't spoil anyway. They just have to stay in the storage boxes for a year. LOL! Anyways, it's all done and they'll be kept in the storage room for another year.

    The Sixth Day of Christmas.
    2007-12-30 15:55:00
December 31 … “On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to meSix geese a laying.” The geese are “out” in our new version of our song, on three counts: we are birded out with the rhyme so far, goose is very expensive (at least it is here in Aus), and there is a lot of fat for a small amount of meat (making it not so economical to serve). It is what the geese are a’laying that interests me. It is approaching the point where the only politically correct food to eat (for an omnivore) is eggs. I haven’t heard anyone expounding on the issues of methane emissions (what do chooks emit?), the inefficient ratio of conversion of animal feed into meat protein, or over-harvesting, in relation to fowl. Sure, there are ethical debates about inhumane methods used in huge chicken factories – but it is the common or garden barnyard fowl I am talking about here. Even the cholesterol police don’t seem to crack down on eggs too much anymore. They are fit for babies and grannies, from breakfast to supper, at formal or casual meals, from soup to crème caramel, crème brulée, egg custard tart, pavlova, pound cake, and – well, you get the idea. Breakfast is the definitively eggy meal, when eggs are the feature not a mere ingredient. Usually we have our breakfast eggs fried, poached or scrambled – although those of you Over the Big Water confuse the rest of us when we are in your country with excessive additional choices such as ‘over-easy’ and ‘sunny-side up’ and other mysterious options. On most modern menus it is the additions that vary the breakfast meal – do you choose the sun-dried rhubarb with your poached egg, or the side of curried okra with your scramble? It seems to me that in previous times there were more options with the actual egg. M. Marnette from France in his book The Perfect Cook (1656) not only gives “Five and twenty twenty several sorts of Omelets of egs, and Ten several manners or wayes of poaching of eggs, but al

    The Fifth Day of Christmas.
    2007-12-30 15:53:00
December 30 ... “On the Fifth Day of Christmas my true love gave to meFive gold rings” One of the interpretations of the five gold(en) rings is that they represent the band of yellow around the neck of the pheasant – meaning that the first seven gifts in the song are all birds. Pheasant may be all very well, but we have had partridge and hen already, and it is time for something lighter. Golden fruits seem appropriate after all of our over-eating – perhaps bananas? Some say that bananas were the fruit of the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden, rather than the apple (which is certainly not a native of the Middle East, and has a more suggestive shape for a fall from grace). No doubt early clerics had reasons for associating the apple with the sin, but there is often very little logic in how we assign names or meanings. The following fruit salad is a good example. I am unable to hazard any guesses at all as to why this is “Russian”. Certainly pineapple has not a single mote of Russian inheritance, and surely vodka would be more suggestive than madeira or rum? Alas, this fruit salad has no bananas, but it sounds wonderfully colourful and delicious nevertheless. Russian Fruit Salad.Peel and pit some peaches, cut in slices and add as much sliced pineapple, some apricots, strawberries and raspberries, put these in a dish. Prepare a syrup of juice of two lemons, two oranges, one cup of water and one pound of sugar, a half teaspoon of powdered cinnamon, grated rind of lemon, add one cup red wine and a half glass of Madeira, arrak or rum. Boil this syrup for five minutes, then pour over the fruit, tossing the fruit from time to time until cool. Place on ice and serve cold.[The International Jewish Cook Book. The Fourth Day of Christmas.
    2007-12-30 15:50:00
December 29 .. “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to meFour calling birds …” Or – four “colly” birds in an earlier version. “Colly” indicates coal black, so four blackbirds were the gift for the day – and they do “call” beautifully as well, so either way they fit the rhyme. As we are told in the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence, blackbirds can be baked in a pie, so pie is a possibility for the day. There are almost as many explanations of the nursery rhyme as there are of the Christmas song, and one of them suggests that it is based on an actual pie presented at a huge feast hosted by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1464. The event was to whip up support for another crusade, and as was the custom for feasts of the time, some impressive entertainment was arranged. At one point a giant pie was presented – containing ‘eight and twenty’ musicians who “sang” when the pie was opened. I think I will take today’s inspiration from the “colly” colour, not the birds – birds have already featured twice in our song-menu. Dark fruitcake seems like the way to go – get next year’s made now and keep dousing it with something alcoholic for the next twelve months. I am rather fond of my own Chocolate Alcohol Cake recipe, but this one, from “an experienced lady” sounds very black and tasty indeed. Black Cake. One pound of flour, one of sugar, fourteen ounces of butter, ten eggs, three pounds of seeded raisins, three pounds of Zante currants, and one pound of citron, a wine glass of wine, one of brandy, and one of milk, a tea-spoonful of saleratus, a table-spoonful of molasses, a table-spoonful of cinnamon, a tea-spoonful of cloves, a quarter of an ounce of mace, or one nutmeg. The sugar should be the brown kind, and stirred a few minutes with the butter, then the eggs beaten to a froth, and stirred in. Brown the flour in a pan, over a few coals — stir it constantly to prevent its burni

Normally we put them under the tree, but the amount of presents would make it too hard to clean the living room floor. So this year all the presents were gathered on top of the cabinet, and after Yasu and I arrived at the house even more presents were added to this bunch. The day of Christmas Eve we went for some last minute groceries at my favorite Dutch grocery store Albert Heijn. Outside the store there was a little market stall where two employees were handing out free Dutch winterfood. Yasu tried a 'broodje rookworst' (breadroll with smoked sausage) and a cup of 'erwtensoep' (pea soup) and he especially liked the rookworst, and not just because it was free. The free-food-giving-guy lent Yasu his Christmas hatOur first Christmas Day (in the Netherlands we celebrate an official second Christmas Day on the 26th) started with a big brunch with all kinds of Dutch foods and breadtoppings, which I hadn't seen and tasted for quite some time. So that was a nice breakfast feast! In between the brunch and dinner it was present time! We had a lot of presents to give and receive so it took us a long time to open everything. Here you are!Oh, wow, what a beautiful present!Yasu also brought presents which made my parents very happy!Yasu gave Gy this vest which says supererotic in Japanese katakana, and Gy loves it!In between all the present giving the parents prepared a scrumptious Christmas dinner. My mother prepared a delicious turkey, which was especially requested all the way from Japan. Gui made a tasty salad and a cheese fondue, which was too cheesy for me but the others really enjoyed it. Desert was a chocolate fondue (which was too chocolatety for me) and a yummy icecream cake. Christmas and New Year, Swiss Style
    2007-12-29 14:14:00
Age-old Christmas and New Year’s customs are alive in well in many towns and villages across Switzerland.People in the village of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland take to the streets on December 25 dressed in costumes meant to frighten away evil spirits. The characters are part of a pagan ritual - repeated on January 1 - called “Pelzmartiga”.Child eaterSome of the figures wear fur (pelz = fur) and frightening masks, and wander through Kandersteg rattling chains and ringing bells. There are wild beasts, “rag men” and even a “child eater”.They are reminders of the natural dangers, disease and poverty which once plagued the village. There are similar events, called “Tricheln”, held between Christmas and New Year in the towns and villages at the eastern end of Lake Brienz. Town folk use bells and drums to scare away the forces of darkness. The events culminate on December 28 in the “Uebersitz” when people from the whole region bring their noisemakers to Meiringen and m

    A Christmas Catholic Carnival
    2007-12-29 11:49:56
Sorry for the light posting. We've been spending some great time with our families during the Christmas season (some vacation was in order!). However, we do have a great new Catholic Carnival here. It's the Christmas version, which makes it pretty special in itself. Hope you are having a blessed, holy Christmas season. And remember: don't take down the decorations just yet. Christmas has only just begun! God bless, Jay

How I Treated Myself Last Christmas
    2007-12-28 21:02:07
You might have noticed that recently, I have been writing about casinos and how I am enticed by trying them out. It started from posts from other bloggers tackling about casino games both online and offline. I dont know the exact reason but I find myself hooked with this games. As a matter of fact, just this morning, I think I found the top rated online casino on the internet. Why? Well, why dont you visit and find out for yourself. ;)This is how I treated myself last christmas season. I got a break from work since I filed a leave for quite some time and no body bosses me around. Why? Because im self-employed and very happy with it. Anyways, I always wanted to go to las Vegas for christmas but I wasnt able to go due to some personal reasons. Since I wasnt able to go, I just spent the season with my family, be happy and be merry. This is the life that blogging and self-employment brings. How sweet it is. ;)

    Christmas Reviews: Warhawk
    2007-12-28 15:33:38
After playing this game for a while, I can safely say that, besides Guitar Hero III (which I had already owned for the PS2, but for some reason was given it for Christmas on the PS3, long story), it is my favorite PS3 game. The whole premise of the game is that of games like Battlefield 2. You spawn, kill some enemies, drive and fly around, etc. Though, this is a multiplayer only game. You can not play this alone. That being said, you have two options of play. You can either play online, or play split-screen style with a friend or two. There are 4 modes of gameplay, your traditional Deathmatch (kill everyone), Team Deathmatch (kill everyone on other team), Capture The Flag (capture the enemy teams flag), and Zones (control different parts of the other teams land to win). The online play is really fun and action packed. Where this game really shines is in the aerial combat. It is simple, yet challenging at the same time. When you get into a jet you can use hover or fly mode. Both have d

    Christmas Reviews: Playstation 3
    2007-12-28 15:32:05
Here I give you the first in the Christmas Review series, where I dish out reviews for the games I got this Christmas. I thought I'd start with the PS3, seeing as I've spent more time on it than any one game. When I first opened it, the first thing I thought was "Man, is this shiny", and it really is. The hardware is beatifully done, very sleek, shiny, although very large too. The user interface has the same sleek feeling. Smooth transitions between menu items, and overall I like the interface. Using the Bluetooth SIXAXIS controller was very easy and well done. Just plug it in, press the PS button in the middle and you're ready to go. Setting up the console was very easy, entering name, date & time, adress etc., very well done. Signing up for the Playstation Network was the same way, quick, to the point, and easy. I like the Playstation Store, it's simple, but it could be better. I haven't used much of the friends features, so I don't know how they are. The web browser is OK, not

    2007-12-28 14:28:00
Fred93 reposted an entry submitted to the Prosper blog that was reject. Normally I would let it stand there, but too many people have the same hope. Here is Cushie06's Christmas wish for Prosper: If I could wish for just one thing this holiday season when it comes to Prosper.com it would be redacting any changes that lead to the appearance of censorship. It is my opinion that the appearance of

    Christmas Offer Is Over
    2007-12-28 12:25:16
Hi, before two days, on the occasion of Christmas I gave an offer to any one regarding a sub domain for my blog. And also I kept the offer for only two days which is over just now. So, until now i got only 3 requests among which one person is using an ibibo account. But as it is not possible with blogs from ibibo, so I could not accept it. And still two did not send their blogs. But now the time ended and hence I am closing. From now I am starting developing this domain and hence if among those two any one gets selected then a blog with sub domain from my domain will be available orelse everything will be as usual. And for the coming 2 days I am more concentrating on submitting this domain to directories. Already I got into the first page for my favourite keyword "Online Earning Opportunities" for this new domain but still I need a firm foundation for my present keywords. Hence for two to three days I will be with this work only. I also added at the top "directories list" so that you can also add your blog to those directories. So, in the mean time I will be writing posts which are only related to making your site popular. So site owners be ready.

Kaadlawan Festival by the beach still evokes Christmas spirit
    2007-12-27 19:03:44
This year’s Kaadlawan Festival in Tanauan, Leyte was held in a different venue, from the usual Tanauan Ampitheater to the Skimboarding Site at Bantay Dagat Area, but it still has not lost its crowd-drawing touch as thousands of people from all walks of life and of all ages came to witness the different presentations evoking [...]
