| Stimulus Bill Turning Into A Christmas Tree | | 2008-01-30 00:00:00 | | The Senate will likely cave to the demands of AARP and others to expand the stimulus to include rebates to elderly Americans who pay little or no taxes (and the rebates dropping from $600 to $500 to keep the cost the same). As we noted:When dealing with a policy that is designed primarily to stimulate the economy, any arbitrary policy can almost be justified to some degree. But what this shows is that there is a problem in trying to use the tax code as the main vehicle for fiscal stimulus and/or social policy. Everyone is always going to complain that they are being shortchanged, despite the fact that getting money to everyone is difficult. On second thought... maybe we should just send helicopters over every major city in the country and drop out $20 bills. And we can even make AARP happy by putting double the money in the helicopters that fly over golf courses in Florida and Arizona. Because the stimulus bill enjoys such broad congressional support, it's a magnet for all sorts of silliness to be attached to it (the term is a "Christmas tree" bill). The Senate may seek to add additional unemployment benefits. A provision has been added to prevent a Child Death Tax. Some are now insisting on an amendment to prevent illegal immigrants from getting rebate checks. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) think we should spend the money on infrastructure. The REALTORS® are happy with the stimulus bill, though. Contrast that with the Coalition [of Economists] Against Fiscal Stimulus, and those normally anti-tax congressmen who voted against it in the House. AARP's success at amending the bill makes this Canadian cartoon from 1985 seem apt: | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree | | 2008-01-06 12:55:28 | | Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
We decided to cancel our trip to Longwood Gardens since the weather is so bad. We have been having a lot of freezing rain and drizzle. That really stinks as we had so much fun last year when we went. Things are going to be too busy to try and fit going in the next couple of weeks *sigh*. I decided to go to Manhattan and I took the train in yesterday afternoon. | Recycle your Christmas Tree | | 2007-12-27 11:32:00 | | Did you know that, according to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are between 30 and 35 million Christmas trees cut down each year? They plant another 56 million each each to make up for it, but imagine 30 million Christmas trees sitting in some landfill somewhere, taking up space and taking years to decompose. Not ideal. The I Dream of Greenie alternative: recycling your tree, which is my plan this year. My neighboring town is offering this service. I just bring it to the designated location, and they mulch it up and use it for ground cover on city and Adopt-a-spot locations. Some municipalities actually pick up at your house- what a deal! You can also go to the National Christmas Tree Assocation and enter your zip code to find a location near you. | | By: I Dream of Greenie | | |

| An Eel-ectrifying Christmas Tree | | 2007-12-09 04:36:32 | | Who says fishes are only good for eating? At Aqua Toto Gifu aquarium in Japan, a large electric eel is employed to power lights on a Christmas tree. The electric transmission is through copper wires which when the electric eel touches send power that lights up ornaments surrounding the Christmas tree.
Officials expect the "eel Christmas tree" to be a popular attraction for dating couples in the lead-up to Christmas Day, when the tree will be removed, reported Mainichi.

| Puttin' Up The Christmas Tree 2 | | 2007-12-08 23:00:00 | | Did You Put Your Tree Up Yet?I'm still fighting a cold but I wanted to help my Mommy, Grammy, and Pop-Pop put up the Christmas tree today. I wasn't about to let a little cold stand in my way! I remember all the fun we had doing it last year... Mommy dressed me up in a Santa Claus suit, I got a chance to play in the Christmas tree box, and we put all kinds of things on the tree. Grammy even started something called a "tradition". She got me a special thing called an "ornament" to put on the tree. It was a tiny sleigh with my name on it. When we finished with the tree and turned the lights on, it was really something to see! This year's "Putting' Up The Christmas Tree" was a lot different than last year. For starters, I couldn't wear my Santa suit because Mommy said I am too big for it now. I also discovered that it's a lot more fun to let everyone else put things on the tree so I can take them off! Of course, this meant we had to play a round of the "NO! and STOP!" game but, it wa | | By: The Booga Wooga | | |

| The Living Christmas Tree 2007 | | 2007-11-25 17:37:00 | | This week is a string of final rehearsals leading up to the annual performance of The Living Christmas Tree (Related Post-Journal article). The pit orchestra is rather squished in a space between the "tree" and the pews. In fact, I'm squashed just enough that I have to be careful that I don't run my bow into the side of the "tree" or catch it on any of the lights or garland hanging on the "tree." This leads to some interesting playing positions while I slouch or raise my violin up or down so I can get a longer note on one bow stroke. Add to that a children's choir that stands directly behind me and I have to be careful not to poke one of the little ones in the eye as well. The music this year is pretty awesome. I understand that they did this "book" a few years ago, but it's all fresh to me and it has a Broadway musical sound rather than a Christmas-Church kind of sound. Dig?Lots of tickets are available, apparently. Shows are at 8pm on Friday, November 30th, 5pm and 8pm on Sa | | By: In Java, Literally... | | |
