| | Remember Kitty Genovese? Some Hartford citizens should. | | 2008-06-06 16:42:01 | | I was 17 years old in 1964 when Queens, New York resident Kitty Genovese was stabbed to death. Her killer stabbed her twice and then came back half an hour later to finish the job. She was nearly home when it happened, and portions of the attack were witnessed by at least a dozen people, who did not intervene. One man called out, "Leave her alone!" Another man called the police. The rest did nothing. The public's reaction to the neighbors' apathy that night of the murder was both horrified and introspective. There was much discussion of the Bystander Effect, a psychological phenomen in which a person is less likely to interfere in an emergency if there are other people standing by who could also help but don't. Yet the same person, if alone, might help.Is that what happened in Hartford, CT last Friday, when a 78 year old man was the victim of a hit and run and no one came to his rescue? | Buying property in USA for non-citizens | | 2008-05-26 17:36:59 | | My research indicates that foreigners can also buy real estate in US as corporations. In brief here is how it works:1. Find an incorporation agent in Nevada (they are all over internet)2. Have them draft for you articles of incorporation or draft them yourself (not too difficult)3. Authorize your agent to file them and be your corporate agent in Nevada4. Directors of the company do not need to be US citizens or residents.5. Obtain EIN from IRS6. Open US bank account7. Contact Dun and Bradstreet and provide them your info if you want to build credit (optional)8. And start buying real estateDon't take my word for it and do your own research as I'm not an attorney.

| | Blagojevich Buying Votes of Illinois Senior Citizens | | 2008-01-10 00:00:00 | | Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, architect of one of the worst state tax reform proposals in recent history early last year, is at again. This time he is basically holding hostage the Chicago mass transit system's general funding source so that he can try to buy some more senior citizens' votes. A truly sad story showing one downside of democratic rule courtesy of the Chicago Tribune:State lawmakers today passed a bill to fund Chicago-area mass transit with a sales tax increase, but Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he wouldn't go along until lawmakers agreed to provide free bus and train rides for the state's senior citizens. The governor's unusual move capped a frenetic 24-hour round of legislative negotiating that raised hopes of an agreement to end the monthslong funding fight and avert service cuts and fare hikes scheduled for Jan. 20. But the governor's decision will send the legislation back for further consideration in the House and Senate."We can't say that all's well that ends well, because this is not over yet," said Rep. Julie Hamos (D-Evanston).Blagojevich had repeatedly vowed to veto the tax-hike plan over the last year but began to soften his opposition in recent weeks as it appeared lawmakers would send it to him. He said he saw the free rides as a way to ease the sting for people on fixed incomes. The governor's justification makes little sense. Why should only senior citizens be spared the hardship of the sales tax increase? There are many poor residents of the Chicago area who use public transit to get to work who will be hit much harder than many of the senior citizens living in the area. Furthermore, even if senior citizens were somehow more worthy of getting a break from the tax increase than others, what about the senior citizens who do not use public transit? They are going to be hit with a tax increase but will not be "eased" by the governor's proposal. Actually, the sales tax increase | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |
| | Growing Active Citizens | | 2008-01-09 08:00:00 | | The youth of our nation can have a powerful voice, if they choose to use it. Not long ago I posted about the film 18 in ’08 - which is meant to inspire our 29 million young voters between the ages of 18 and 24 to exercise their democratic voice through the ballot box. It was all the news after the Iowa Caucuses and if Iowa and New Hampshire are any indication, it appears that this is just what they are doing.I am thrilled that we have reached this point. I am wondering, however, if it’s the timing, the candidates or the issues that has finally moved these kids to action. And are Republican youth driven by the same issues and concerns as their Democratic peers? There are issues that our kids relate to: certainly a greater awareness of Global Warming brought to us by Al Gore, more knowledge of the health care crisis thanks to Michael Moore and his documentary, Sicko, the Iraq war and Afghanistan, thanks to well, you know, along with a “threat” of nuclear threats in North Korea and Iran. Then there is the genocide in Darfur - also a newsmaker that our youth are actively engaged in. Bigger topics, that are less issue specific such as the economy, unemployment, national security, education, crime and welfare and many other are less glamorous and more difficult to wrap their arms around but still undoubtedly on their minds. Whatever has lit their fires indicates that they are on a mission to help put them out.Just read the voice of one youth, from a blog called, “It’s Getting Hot in Here” to hear the passion in their voices. It’s electrifying. Here’s just a piece of it:What does this all mean? Is it all rhetoric? Of course it is. But what it means is that Obama is rallying this state and in turn the country around the idea of a movement. The high-school kids in Concord, NH who rallied for Obama: they’ve never yelled for the civil rights movement before, they’ve never been told they’re part of a movement before - and now, there they are, cheering t | | By: Minivan Diaries | | |
| | Israel Thinking Ahead: Prepares Citizens for WMD Attacks | | 2008-01-01 10:13:00 | | Ever since the recent NIE Report conceived by American Intelligence sources, America has had the proverbial finger of being warmongers pointed at it from almost every direction imaginable. Comments about Bush trying to start a new war, this time in Iran. References made about trying to bring about a new "cold war" with Russia, (which Russia is bringing about on its own quite well without our help, thank you very much.) And of course, how everything must be America's fault and we are just misunderstanding Iran's intents in their maniacal drive for nuclear power.Did I miss anything?I thought not.But Israel isn't buying it, thankfully. It seems that ever since the first Gulf War, under Bush Sr., Israel has been working on protecting its citizenry against chemical and biological WMD's. I suppose, in a way, that this is GOOD news for western civilization. Especially since Israel is right there, on the doorsteps of terror sponsoring nations. And since they are adamantly more adapted to what goes on in the region, it stands to reason that they might have a better idea of what's REALLY going on.But Israel is proceeding even further into defending its citizens, (unlike our own Congress being able to do,) in ramping up its civil defense. From NewsMax;"The campaign will offer civilians detailed information on how to protect their homes against weapons of mass destruction — how to choose a protected room and how to seal doors and windows against a WMD attack. Information will be provided in a guidebook to be distributed to every household, as well as through television broadcasts, a Web site, and a telephone information center."If only our own Congress would care so much about its constituency.Article info provided by NewsMax.Com. | | By: Hoopy Frood Dude | | |

| | An American Warning - Firearms in the hands of citizens. | | 2007-11-21 08:56:00 | | What about the Second Amendment?
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
For some reason this amendment has been a source of controversy for many years. I really can't imagine why. As with anything our founding fathers wrote, they left us proof that tell us how they wanted us to proceed and what exactly they meant.
To begin with, I think the militia part of this amendment was the after thought, not the people. To me it is clear that our founding fathers expected the people to have firearms but wanted to make sure that a militia could be formed by the people. You have to remember that King George didn’t allow militias. He did however allow firearms in times of peace. It wasn’t until the colonialists began to rise up that George began to take firearms away.

| | A Texas reverse mortgage keeps the cash flowing for senior citizens By Antonio Redford | | 2007-09-28 10:03:10 | | Dignity is a mans most prized possession and he would no doubt like to hold on to it till the very end of his life. A man works throughout his life to provide the comforts and luxuries for his family. He may also build some assets like a house and such a property is one of the most cherished belonging of any person. However once a person has crossed sixty and reached the retirement age he may suddenly find himself at a crossroad of life where the constant inflow of cash in the form of a monthly salary suddenly stops. This is a time when the retired person needs to be fully prepared and have sufficient amount of liquid cash to manage the regular and unaccounted financial needs that may arise. A Texas reverse mortgage in such a scenario could very well be the best support system that a retired person can own.Any person above the age of sixty two can go in for a Texas reverse mortgage in that state. | | Undocumented Citizens Rush to File Paperwork Before Filing Fee Rises | | 2007-08-09 05:51:19 | |
A $400 application filing fee is bad enough, but now it is going to rise to $675 or perhaps even $1,000? This is simply and unequivocally WRONG and OUTRAGEOUS and I cannot understand why my America is placing such a roadblock to citizenship!!!!!A $100 filing fee is more than enough to pay for this privilege...uh...excuse me service. Why does it need to be so damn expensive in order for an undocumented immigrant to become a legal citizen of the United States of America? Well according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the fees are needed to speed up the application process and balance the agency’s budget. Horse manure!!! The fees are actually needed in order to balance somebody's pockets so that they keep from falling over the next time they walk to their power lunch. Justice Department Adult Guardian Dianne Pendergast said 145 cases of elder abuse were under investigation in Queensland. One woman lost her $750,000 home after granting a relative power of attorney.Another returned from hospital to find her house had been sold.Ms Pendergast said a growing number of "predators" wanted their parent's assets. They point out, “In the last seven years, while the Medicare budget for nursing home stays has dramatically increased from $13.6 billion to $15.7 billion, home health care has been cut by 25 percent, from $14 billion to $10.5 billion.
