New South Welshman Michael Clarke will captain Australia in the upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh, with skipper Ricky Ponting sidelined by a wrist injury.
Cricket Australia announced a 14-man squad for the three-match series in Darwin here Friday. The Australians play Bangladesh on August 30, and September 3 and 6.
While Ponting was left out, veteran opener Matthew Hayden was named in the squad despite a lingering achilles tendon problem.
In the absence of Ponting, the 27-year-old Clarke led Australia to successive wins over the West Indies in one-dayers in early July.
Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said the priority was having Ponting fit for a hectic campaign that includes an away series against India and home Tests against New Zealand and So... | | By: BrightCricket | | |

| Ken Clarke to propose a dog's dinner for England! | | 2008-04-24 15:24:36 | | The West Lothian Question has been asked again. The Conservatives are thinking like mad, especially those in the Democracy Task Force set up by David Cameron. But I fear they've failed to make good grades. No straight A's coming from Ken Clarke. He's implacably opposed to an English Parliament. "We've got one!", he says, meaning the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. This Victorian pile is the British Parliament, build to glorify the political embodiment of the Empire. It is not an English parliament. So we will get, as The Daily Telegraph reports, a compromise between those who want English votes for English laws and those who would leave things be (undemocratically so, but they wouldn't mind!). Legislation affecting only England, an education Bill, for instance, would receive a second reading by the entire Commons; but its committee stage, where the measure is subjected to line-by-line scrutiny and can be amended, would be for English MPs only. When the Bill came back to the Commons ... | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |
| | Charles Clarke sizes up the likely stalking horses | | 2008-04-15 17:00:43 | | Charles Clarke was one of New Labour's beleaguered Home Secretaries. Letting criminals loose by mistake, getting into a muddle over terrorist's human rights and generally bluffing his way out of trouble. He's been a bit quiet of late, but then he's a bit like a volcano. Get a rumble going and he could erupt. Now he's apparently checking out the runners and riders in the stalking horse stakes. According to The Independent, an informative MP says that "Charles has the names". Names of those who would sign up in order to trigger a ballot for a leadership contest. Of course, Clarke denies all this, but then he would, wouldn't he? The MP kindly added that either Mr Clarke or another MP with "nothing to lose" would stand as a way of gauging opinion in the Labour Party. As Jon Snow put it to Brown, "Ten years as Iron Chancellor, ten months as a dithering Prime Minister?" All this must be very depressing for him, now being labelled the John Major of New Labour. Major didn't get to see a stalkin... | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

| | Arthur C Clarke dies | | 2008-03-20 13:44:00 | | The death of Arthur C. Clarke was not unexpected as he was 90 years old been suffering from post-polio disorder for many years. It was nonethelss a sad event. The man was more than simply one of the world's best known and loved science-fiction writers, with books like Childhood’s End and Rendezvous with Rama and of course he will be remembered by many for the film 2001 A Space Odyssey, but he was also a major force in science being the man who first popularized the idea of communications satellites, a concept that was rejected by some as being too far-fetched. He died at his home in Sri Lanka. He will be missed.Tags: Moroccan Morocco Fes, Maghreb news... | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |

| | Arthur C. Clarke Dies at 90 | | 2008-03-19 10:14:00 | | I was saddened to learn last night after I got home from Trivia Night of the passing of Arthur C. Clarke. He gained worldwide fame as the author of the classic bestselling novel "2001: A Space Odyssey," which became a worldwide hit as a film made by Stanley Kubrick in 1968.Mr. Clarke, who was born in England, died in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, where he had lived since 1956. He wrote many other books, but "2001: A Space Odyssey" was by far and away his most famous work. He was also nominated for an Oscar for the film's screenplay.I first read the book in high school, and I saw the movie as a youngster. I didn't understand most of it when I first saw it, but I've seen it many times over the years and it has become one of my favorite films. The movie's music and special effects are just spectacular, and it has become more and more beloved as the years have progressed. So in honor of Mr. Clarke, I present here on YouTube one of the movie's most pivotal scenes, when HAL 9000, the onboard... | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | By: Plus Gonzo Arcade! | | |

| | Clement Clarke | | 2008-03-09 09:44:00 | | As with most buildings named after a person, The Clement Clarke is invariably going to be compared to its namesake. And in this case, it’s not too hard to imagine the building in the times of Clement Clarke, a Columbia professor and creator of the now-famous Christmas poem, “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The building’s [...]... | | By: New York City Condo's | | |
| | Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha by Roddy Doyle | | 2007-12-22 19:47:20 | | Paddy Clarke is not a funny story. Barrytown of the sixties, thoroughly enjoys the company of his friends – Kevin, Liam, [...]... | | By: What Am I Reading | | |
| | Faces in the Medina - Suzanna Clarke | | 2007-05-27 18:31:00 | | Suzanna Clarke is a well known face in the Fez Medina. Over the last few months she has been back in Australia editing her much awaited book on Fez as well as keeping her "day job" as Arts Editor of a major Australian daily newspaper. In usual fashion she also managed to keep working on her Masters of International Relations degree. The photographer and writer is back in Fez to complete work on her upcoming book and to cover the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music.Driss waits for Suzanna in CasablancaThere was a funny incident at Casablanca airport the other morning when Suzanna returned to Morocco. Unaware that she was being treated to a VIP ride back to Fez, she was startled to find her name on a clipboard. Our driver Driss, who had driven from Fez at 4 in the morning was equally anxious. What if he missed her, what if she had missed the flight.Driss is overjoyed when he spots SuzannaFortunately for all concerned they did find each other and the first part of Suzanna Clarke's trip ba... | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |
