    Animal Rights in the Classroom
    2008-05-01 21:00:00
Animal rights extremists are trying to invade classrooms in Washington, D.C. With the passage of the "Animal Protection Amendment Act," they'd be able to go into schools and indoctrinate children with their bizarre notion of “humane education.” The bill would require the D.C. Department of Education provide such instruction. It would also get rid of the phrase "animal owner" in the District of Columbia. No longer would you own a dog or a cat. Now you'd be their "animal...(read more)

Debriefing from Affiliate Classroom LIVE Training
    2008-02-23 21:38:00
The training has been over for about 2 hours now and I've been sitting in my hotel room on the 16th floor with a brilliant view of west Las Vegas thinking about whether or not I should share my views with you on the training tonight or wait until I've had some time to absorb it and wind down more from the experience to write about it.However I've decided in the interest of reporting to you, I should talk about my initial impressions at least while they're still fresh in my memory. I will be dropping names!First, the event was hosted by Amit Singal from Affiliate Classroom. Super gracious guy and a pleasure to talk with. Good job Amit for a great event! The first speaker of the day was the keynote by Ned Farra. Ned talked a bit about Zappos.com and their history. Being previously unfamiliar with Zappos, it was interesting for me from a case study type point of view.Next we heard from Bryan Rhodes & Stephanie Harris from Shaaf Consulting on a typical affiliate manager day. A lot

    Classroom Blues
    2008-02-21 00:00:00
I was in Js school the other day (his early school days n how he gets mad if I am not on time!), and guess what, the whole school experience came alive in front of my eyes. Waiting for him, I glanced through the classrooms and found out that little has changed in terms of furniture. The same old chairs peeping back. my mind revolted, “Cant we have something better?. I did put up my thoughts in the suggestion box but before I could say, I had to find out if there has been a change in classroom furniture ( !!). including chairs that kids spend quite some time sitting on On briefly going through some models, I liked a couple. I have done a few murals for the junior classes just when the school went into business, and hopefully they wouldnt mind me suggesting good chair models too. You can use them at home too, right next to the study table. Here are some I lay my eyes upon, The Catie Student Chair is a fabulous design. The ergonomics are just puuuurfect. Comic Books in the Classroom
    2008-01-03 03:11:00
Generations of children grew up reading comic books on the sly, hiding out from parents and teachers who saw them as a waste of time and a hazard to young minds. Comics are now gaining a new respectability at school. That is thanks to an increasingly popular and creative program, often aimed at struggling readers, that encourages children to plot, write and draw comic books, in many cases using themes from their own lives.

Tips for Teachers: Classroom Management Ideas
    2007-07-16 03:04:50
The following post was recently submitted to and published by Associated Content. Unlike my previous AC submissions, this one is brand new to the online world: Shortly after graduating from college (and by “shortly” I mean the very next day), I began work as a teacher at the very high school from which I had graduated [...]

Autism (ASD) Students Inclusion in the General Education Classroom - 2006-2007 - (Updated 06/14//07) - End of Year
    2007-06-18 03:13:00
One of the most difficult things to do is to keep an ASD student in the General Education Classroom. Special Education Aides have a very tough time battling the ASD student, Teachers and Special Ed Administration officials who many do not understand students with Autism.Autism students cannot be lumped into one category where one solution fits all. My experience has shown that most Teachers are afraid of the unknown and “non-predictability” of Autism students. Special Ed Administration who make the decisions on plans for the students are not with the students enough to be able to “predict” the best course of action.Special Education Aides are not looked upon in many cases to have the credentials, expertise or the know-how to "predict" because they are the least paid employees in many school districts. School officials and employees are all about credentials and hierarchy for self-preservation and protection.Notice I have used the word “Predict” thus far 4 times. During my b

An Inconvenient Truth Becomes Required Classroom Viewing?
    2007-05-22 03:07:00
First it was his world history class. Then he saw it in his economics class. And his world issues class. And his environment class. In total, 18-year-old McKenzie, a Northern Ontario high schooler, says he has had the film An Inconvenient Truth shown to him by four different teachers this year."I really don't understand why they keep showing it," says McKenzie (his parents asked that his last name not be used). "I've spoken to the principal about it, and he said that teachers are instructed to present it as a debate. But every time we've seen it, well, one teacher said this is basically a two-sided debate, but this movie really gives you the best idea of what's going on."McKenzie says he has educated himself enough about both sides of the climate- change controversy to know that the Al Gore movie is too one-sided to be taught as fact. Even scientists who back Mr. Gore's message admit they're uncomfortable with liberties the politician takes with "science" in the film. But, McKenz

Computers in the Classroom: Cause of Change? Updated 4/18/07
    2007-04-18 18:03:00
Computers in the Classroom -Do They Help? YOU MUST DECIDE FOR YOURSELFI have written on this subject before but it needs to be questioned again and again when it comes to school districts using their money wisely.Almost every school district in the country has bought some sort of computer software that advertises to help students do better in math, phonics or reading.Once again it is that time of year when many school districts (mine included) put special Bonds to be voted on and start complaining there is not enough money so cuts in both classes and programs will need to be reduced or cancelled. This used to only happen during Bargaining time but now it is every year. Learning threats are always made that if we don’t have the latest technology we will fall behind in the “Test Scores.” Do Test Scores = Learning?Personally, I believe computers and software must be in the schools ONLY after it is proven that the Technology and Computers are designed into the day-to-day curriculum an

    Koha in the Classroom
    2007-01-22 18:20:00
LibLime is providing supported hosted Koha software to LIS programs. Now the students can get in there and see how searches change if 505t is added to the title index. What is the effect of indexing series fields in title searches? This kind of hands on experience is invaluable. They can get the MIT catalog to use as a catalog, just have to convert the MARCXML to MARC. Then convert the MARCXML version of the LC authority files, to have a nice test environment.Koha
