While away a sunny winter's afternoon on the terrace with the stunning Bouanania minaret but metres away, sit in the cosy bar area or the buzzy courtyard by the kitchen, or lounge comfortably in the library on the first floor and check out the books.Exciting artistic events are being planned: artist Jess Stephens plans calligraphy lessons: from two hour courses for visitors to Fez to longer courses for residents, directed by the calligraphy expert whose work graces the walls of the Cafe; henna sessions and more - watch this space for details!The menu is an eclectic mix of traditional Moroccan fare and some European offerings that make for a good mix to please everyone. While some staples such as harira (Moroccan soup), couscous, camel burgers and the Cafe's famous lemon tart are standards, there are daily specials such as fish pastilla and beef lasagne.Tariq's family recipe for Couscous Boohaloo is really worth trying with succulent, tender lamb, couscous, raisins, apricots and caramelised onions. A happy bunch of punters crowded the tables to sample the first meal offered by the new Cafe. The restoration is complete and the house is looking very beautiful, the kitchen is installed and the furniture in place. First up on the menu was a choice of harira or the Fes Platter - featuring homemade traditional breads, lentils, aubergine dip and dates stuffed with marzipan. Camel burgers came next - a first for Lumen - and very tasty they were, served with a well-dressed salad and chips. There was spaghetti bolognaise or pasta alfredo for the less brave. Tariq excelled himself as usual with a banana, chocolate and walnut cake or icecream for dessert.This was a test not only for the food, but also for the staff, many of whom are new to waiting tables, and they did very well. It is a bit late (the opening party was in May), but as everyone knows who has tried to restore a house in the medina, things don't always go according to plan. But then, when you want perfection, things always take a little longer.Last night Lumen, Tamsin and Rose were guinea pigs as Cafe Mike was trying out a new chef. The Chicken Caesar Salad was fresh and delicious, with the right amount of dressing, crispy garlicky croutons and lashings of grated parmesan. It was a treat to the eye and the palate. Next came lasagne which promises to be a great dish. The finale (made by Tariq whose cakes are already famous) was banana, walnut and chocolate dessert cake, with a white chocolate sauce.There's very little left to do on the restoration front. Lights have been installed in the street outside (Derb Magana, leading off Tala'a Kebira at the Bouanania Medersa), the kitchen is almost complete and the rooms are stacked with interesting-looking furniture and objets. The bookshelves for the library are finished, there's a great calligraphy mural on the wall, staff t-shirts are being made - it's all oh so close.
