Storm Clouds On the Obama Bus?
    2008-07-01 19:06:57
FASTEN YOUR SEAT-BELTSWe could be in for a bumpy ride.  Larry Sinclair has provided his phone records - and strangely enough, they point Sinclair, not Barack Obama, telling the truth. From Obama Who?"...“A newly released CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll found that if Obama does not select Clinton as his running mate, 22 percent of her supporters would stay home this fall (almost 4 million voters) — and another 17 percent (a little over 3 million) would vote for McCain.” –CNN (parentheses are mine). So, if we use 2004 as the baseline - GWB won with 62 million voters ...

Funnel clouds form over southern Ontario
    2008-06-09 08:20:00
People in southwestern Ontario will be cleaning up debris and repairing damage Monday after severe storms, fuelled by intense heat and humidity, battered a swath of territory between Windsor and Toronto. There were reports of tornadoes or funnel clouds in at least three places. Environment Canada says it will investigate the sightings. The weather agency's Geoff Coulson says satellite images

The Commonwealth Publications Saga Part II: Black Clouds
    2008-05-21 23:03:00
The ad in the Edmonton Journal read: ‘North America's fastest growing mass market publisher requires Public Relations professionals.’ Having just moved to town, I was looking for a fresh start and a new direction. Like many of the authors I would come to know, I took a fateful chance on the small Edmonton publisher. In March, 1997, I interviewed with Faye Hillman at the offices of Commonwealth Publications, Inc. Impressed with the atmosphere, I took an instant liking to the surroundings. Staff was buzzing from one office to another, phones were ringing, the walls were covered with impressive book-promoting posters, and the back warehouse held racks containing original manuscripts as well as row upon row of pallets full of already-printed novels. The interview itself, however, was quite bizarre. A pleasant if not docile woman, Ms. Hillman seemed not to know how to conduct an interview. She seemed unprepared and unsure of what to do from one moment to the next. In short order, I became

S'pore economy faces dark storm clouds: PM
    2008-04-30 16:37:00
SINGAPORE - The United States is probably in a recession and the Singapore economy will be more severely affected if the turmoil in global financial markets worsens, Singapore's prime minister said on Wednesday. The Southeast Asian country was ready to respond if the situation in the United States worsens, said Lee Hsien Loong in a statement to mark May Day.'Dark storm clouds have gathered... A US recession has probably already started,' Mr Lee said.'We must watch closely how the situation in the US unfolds, and be ready to respond if things take a turn for the worse. We have the resources and the ability to do so.'Mr Lee acknowledged that the rising cost of living in the Republic was a major issue but said Singapore could not be completely insulated from rising global inflation.'We need not worry about a food shortage, because we have adequate supplies, and can buy what we need from many sources,' he said.Mr Lee said that the central bank's policy to allow the Singapore dollar to rise

Purple-red Clouds at Sunset - Sky Watch Friday
    2008-04-03 17:57:00
Deep purple and red Sunset looking over the cityLast Sky Watch Friday, just after I put my post up, I went out to listen to a presentation on the Australian Navy. When I was walking in the door I noticed this brilliant sunset lighting up the sky. I happened to have my camera with me, so I was able to snap a few shots. I didn't have a tripod with me and I used about 250mm lens so I had to bring up the ISO a bit to get a clear picture.Purple clouds at sunsetBy the time I got home from the presentation last Friday it was too late to post these shots, so I'm sharing them today as the Sky Watch for the week. This Sky Watch Friday photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera. Weird Clouds Hiding the Sun - Sky Watch Friday
    2008-03-13 10:00:00
Sun shining through a gap in the strange cloudsSky Watch FridayThis sky actually looked quite bland when seen in real life, but I somehow felt the urge to take a photo of it. Maybe it was the framing with the tops of the houses at the bottom and the tree silhouette, but regardless of the reason I took the photo. This is what it turned out like. By focusing on the sun and adjusting the white balance for it, the clouds are made to look ominous and threatening, when they are far from it in reality! This was shot with a 28mm (equivalent) lens, making it appear slightly "fish-eyed".This Sky Watch Friday photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera. The Glory of the Heavens - Clouds and Tree - Sky Watch Friday
    2008-02-07 04:13:00
Clouds and a Tree in Shadow - Sky Watch FridayI got this shot purely by chance one day. I was outside with the camera getting some nature photos, when I happened to glance up and see this stunning cloud formation aligned perfectly with the top of a gum tree. Had I gone a few steps further in any direction, this scene wouldn't have been as exceptional, as the tree needed to be in just the right position relative to the clouds for this shot to work. As it turned out, I was able to quickly snap this picture. The composition of this shot is almost the inverse of Rembrandt's famous style, where he uses small areas of bright light to draw attention to important areas of the painting. In this photo, the large dark area occupied by the tree draws your attention, and then you notice the bright white cloud in the opposite corner. Then a trailing wisp of cloud brings your attention back in circle to the right, where the dark tree is.Another interesting aspect of this photo is the many different la

Urban Landcape - Sunset, Sun-rays, and Clouds
    2007-11-16 20:23:00
Sunset over Urban RooftopsLast night I was outside during twilight, and noticed this amazing sunset. The Sun has already disappeared behind the clouds, but rays of light are still shining out and covering the sky. Although the photo above might look touched-up, I have not digitally manipulated this picture. The duotone effect (where the sun and it's rays are black-and-white while the sky near the top of the picture is blue) simply occurred naturally. This is a capture which is not likely to be seen again soon, I was lucky to be out at the right time to see it.The photo below is of the same scene taken a few minutes later - you can see the huge difference between the pictures. In the photo below, the sun has set and the rays of light from the first picture are entirely gone, replaced instead by a reddish glow near the horizon.Sunsets are always very beautiful to watch, and each one is different. As you can see from these photos, the scene changes even from minute to minute, giving you a very entertaining show. So why not step outside tonight, and have a look at this wonderful "theatre" of creation, free for all to see? These photos taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera.#1: (Sun with Rays Shining) Shutter speed: 1/5999, F8.0, ISO 80#2 (Sunset over rooftops) Shutter speed: 1/399, F5.7, ISO 100Submit Photos to Shutterstock and make $$$! The Clouds
    2007-11-06 11:06:58
The clouds look beautiful, soaring high and generously donating shade to the sea beneath. All oddly shaped, yet very soothing. It’s a totally different look from up here; the clouds seem so much more alive, so full of life. I just saw a cloud, standing above the others. It seemed to reach out to touch [...]

    Drill Clouds
    2007-11-02 10:17:35
Lorcan Dempsey mentions Drill Clouds in his discussion of some interesting work being done at CISTI. They are Tag Clouds 2.0, ones that enhance the searching and presentation of results. Might be something worth considering.Ungava extends tag clouds to make them a useful tool for search refinement. That is, to use a tag cloud to refine an existing query by adding new elements to the query through interactions with the cloud. As this results in a kind of drill-down search behaviour, these new clouds have been named drill clouds.

    Labeling the Clouds
    2007-09-02 00:34:00
Some of you may have already noticed the "Label Cloud" I recently added to this blog's sidebar. Where there used to be a simple list of categories, I have added a fancier, more aesthetically pleasing "cloud" of categories. If you look at the coloured bar on the right hand side of this page, you should see something like the following (you may have to scroll down): Basically, this "cloud" is just a list of all the photographic categories in this blog, but with a twist - the categories with more posts in them appear bigger in the list, while the less populated categories show up smaller.I hope that this new addition, along with the content rating system at the bottom of every post will help you to enjoy this blog more. So have a browse! Just click on one of the categories on the right to get started. And if you like a post, you can give it a rating simply by selecting your choice on the bar at the bottom of the post.Other blogs: The Big Byte WOWebbs blogs Internet eX-plorer 8

Amazing Grace - The Splendour of Light [Sun bursting through clouds]
    2007-08-28 01:17:00
Amazing Grace - Sun Bursting through clouds and treesSun bursting through cloudsRecently I watched the movie “Amazing Grace”, an excellent movie about the abolishment of the slave trade in 18th century England. It follows the political work of William Wilberforce, a politician in the House of Commons. This photo reminds me of the theme of the movie – through all evils and tribulations of this world, God and goodness will triumph. The bright Sun, shrouded by cloud, seems to be bursting forth from its corner of the sky, spreading the Light to all corners of the globe. This photo gains its impressive and triumphant effect mainly because of the parabolic nature of the image – the picture seems to have been taken with a “fish eye” lens, creating an effect of bulging in the centre. Surprisingly, I took this photo with a simple point-and-shoot Kodak C330 digital camera, and didn’t use a fish eye lens at all!The trees in this photo create a natural frame for the picture. GIC ready for possible dark clouds despite bright economic outlook
    2007-08-01 19:13:00
SINGAPORE : It is a Goldilocks global economy now — not too hot, not too cold, but just right — according to some economists, and the bears have not come home, yet.On Tuesday, Dr Tony Tan named three dark clouds — or bears — on the horizon that have caught the attention of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC).First, the economy might get hot if the price of oil, now $70 per barrel, reaches $100 per barrel as some have predicted. "What this will do to inflation is a worry," said Dr Tan, who is the GIC deputy chairman and executive director.Secondly, the economy could cool if a tightening of credit is caused by the crisis in the United States sub-prime market, where up to 2.2 million people are at risk of forfeiting their homes."If that's the case, the sea of liquidity, which is a rising tide lifting up the prices of all assets, may be dampened," said Dr Tan, speaking to reporters after a GIC event. The third risk is that of an external shock, such as a lar

Dark clouds in forecast: Your long-term market assumptions may be all wet
    2007-07-01 17:45:00
People in your 20s...something for you to ponder on...for your retirement....====================================By Chuck Jaffe, MarketWatchCHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Everything you know about your financial future could be wrong. That's not a statement on listening to predictions of a dire market crash or following some new theory of the "best" way to invest. It's about what you think you know about stock market returns and how you have planned for them in the future. Paul McCulley, managing director at Pimco and author of the new book "Your Financial Edge," says that investors need to reshape their portfolios to reflect the returns they should realistically expect from the stock market for the next 25 years. It's not the first time someone has suggested that market gains will be lower over the long haul, it's just the rare occasion when someone with so much influence in the industry and such a long track record of being correct as an economist has called for such a dramatic shift
