Omar Minaya is a Big Fat Idiot (& a Clueless Putz)
    2008-06-17 17:47:00
The wrong man got fired on Tuesday morning.By now the world knows that Willie Randolph was fired as Mets' manager in one of the most appalling ways ever known. He got bounced after a Mets' win in Anaheim, and after winning 3 of their last 4 games. He got fired after beginning a trip out west by a general manager who was too afraid to do the dirty work in New York.As far as I'm concerned Omar Minaya, errand boy for the Wilpons, was the one who should have been bounced on Tuesday. He put together this underachieving, appalling mess that is the current state of the New York Mets. I watched the press conference from Anaheim this afternoon and he comes across to me as not just totally clueless, but a liar and a backstabber as well. It was clear that Randolph wasn't going to survive the season unless the Mets got hot and back in the race. Minaya, with his absolutely absymal timing, has succeeded in turning Randolph into a sympathetic figure. He tries to make it sound like he was Willie Randol...

    Clueless Joel
    2007-10-12 05:30:41
The steady stream of Joe Torre-related articles has shown no sign of abating since the Yankees' early playoff exit, and probably won't until his job status is clarified once and for all. These articles generally stump for Torre's return based solely on past success, or demand Torre's ouster on the basis that it's simply "time for a change." Only a precious few actually take the time and effort to examine Torre's on-the-job performance in an effort to determine his worthiness. The following, written by Joel Sherman of the NY Post just before the Yankees' defeat, is not one of them.Lou Piniella, the man George Steinbrenner wanted last year at this time rather than Joe Torre, just guided his team out of the playoffs, losing three straight games to a Diamondback team that scored fewer runs than it allowed this year.True, but if you think that proves that the Yankees are better off with Torre than Piniella, or anyone else, you're mistaken; it merely serves to illustrate how little impact managers actually have on the outcomes of games.Piniella blundered in Division Series Game 1 by removing his ace Carlos Zambrano after 85 pitches to save him for a Game 4 that never came, a mistake that if committed by Torre would have led to his firing on the spot by Steinbrenner.First of all, I don't think that really was a mistake; Carlos Marmol, the reliever whom Piniella used instead of sticking with Zambrano, was extremely effective during the regular season, and was probably a safer bet to hold the lead at that point than was Big Z. And since that was the case, I see absolutely nothing wrong with thinking ahead to Game 4. When did it become taboo to think about any other game than the one currently being played? Is a little strategy such a terrible thing? Also, the assertion that Torre would have been fired immediately had he made that mistake is utterly preposterous. This isn't the Steinbrenner of 30 years ago. Plus, anyone who watches Torre on a regular basis knows that his handling of his pitching staff is routinely atrocious--yet he hasn't been fired for any number of offenses worse than Piniella's.Piniella won 85 regular-season games in the majors' weakest division and zero in the playoffs after the Cubs spent a Steinbrenner-esque $300 million last offseason.Well, yes, they did spend $300 million, but it's not like they have a $300 million payroll this year; that figure is just the sum that they committed to all of their signings in the long term. And they did go from last place to first place in one year, so it wasn't exactly a complete failure.Piniella was who Steinbrenner wanted last year when the Yanks flopped out of the Division Series. Now, in a published report, The Boss is saying that should the Yanks not advance out of the first round again Torre is almost certainly gone. But for whom? Joe Girardi? Don Mattingly?Yes, those are two names which have been cited as potential replacements, among others. Are you going to explain why Torre is better than they are, or merely leave it to the imagination? The Yankees won Game 3 last night 8-3 over Cleveland to get back into this series. Perhaps this will give Steinbrenner and all of Torre's detractors some time to table their fury and ask who among the following is most likely to get the Yankees to the playoffs in 2008: a) Torre. b) Girardi. c) Mattingly. If the answer is Torre, why are we even having the discussion?But...who says the answer is Torre? If you think just anyone can get talent to the playoffs, then how do you explain the tank job of Willie Randolph's Mets? Do you like how Ray Handley steered Bill Parcells' championship Giants? Even with a San Diego victory yesterday, are you enjoying the work of Norv Turner's Chargers in the aftermath of Marty Schottenheimer?Perhaps the explanation is that the Mets didn't have the necessary talent. It's not like they were a seemingly invincible team which inexplicably failed to win. They were a deeply flawed team, which simply suffered from too many weaknesses to surpass the Phillies. And I'm pretty sure that pro football coaches have a much greater impact on their teams' success than baseball coaches, so I'm not sure that those other parallels are valid. And once again, you've failed to prove anything about Torre's managerial superiority. Nobody wants to hear how fickle October is, least of all Steinbrenner at the prices he is paying. But if it does not have a large crapshoot element then how exactly do you explain this NLCS: Colorado vs. Arizona?Well, Colorado is the best team in the National League, at least if you believe in run differential as a gauge of team talent, so their presence in the NLCS isn't a major surprise. And if you don't believe in run differential, then you'll easily accept that the 90-72 Diamondbacks were a lot better than the 85-77 Cubs. Not that the playoffs don't have a large crapshoot element; they are largely based on luck. But this probably wasn't the best way to prove it.And perhaps it's time to understand that the teams Torre managed from 1996-2001 were even more special than we knew, that they possessed an internal brew that defied this parlor game.Parity then wasn't quite what it is now. Plus, maybe they just defied the odds. And if they did possess a magical "internal brew," then maybe Torre shouldn't get as much credit as he does for his managing during that period. He certainly hasn't been able to duplicate that playoff success from 2002-2007.The best teams, though, prevail through 162 games, and Torre is 12-for-12 in getting his teams through 162 games into the playoffs. My gut says he is the best man to make it 13-for-13 next year. When major league teams start making decisions based on what Joel Sherman's gut says, this might actually mean something. How are we talking about Joe Torre? Even at 21-29, his clubhouse support never wavered this year. That's another thing. I keep reading how this season may have been the best managing job of Torre's career, because his team started out so poorly, and finished so strong. But wasn't Torre the manager for the whole season? If he gets credit for the fast finish, shouldn't he get blame for the slow start? Of course, he shouldn't get too much blame or credit for either, since he wasn't entirely, or even greatly, responsible for the team's play during either period. All I'm saying is, a little consistency wouldn't hurt.In 12 years on the job, he has never outraged like Guillen or landed a DUI like Tony La Russa. So he hasn't gotten arrested, or offended just about everyone in baseball? That's definitely a positive, but most managers can make those claims. So he has the full support of his players, he has done nothing but bring a positive image to Steinbrenner's product and his players have always played hard for him. Will we be able to say that about the Joe Girardi Yankees or the Don Mattingly Yankees? Maybe. But why find out before you must?Because Torre, as nice as a guy as he seems to be, is an undeniably poor tactician. His bullpen management is nothing short of embarrassing. When he had a bullpen good enough to ensure that his failures didn't prove too costly, that might not have been a firing offense, but now that he has less to work with in that area, his inability to get the most out of his personnel provides justification for a change. Then again, Joel Sherman's gut says different, and who am I to question a prognosticator of that caliber?Hopefully this post will conclude our recent Yankees-related BTL binge. Hey, we can't help it if people keep writing stupid things about one team....

Is Your Doctor Clueless About How to Lower Cholesterol?
    2007-04-23 02:38:00
Pfizer, which stands to lose billions of dollars if health plans continue to encourage patients to switch from their statin drug Lipitor to the cheaper generic Zocor, is trying to get a letter-writing campaign started to change the policies.Pfizer has been sending doctors a CD containing two letters -- one to send to health plans and one to send to pharmacists. The letters state that switching from Lipitor to a generic statin for cost reasons will undermine doctors' clinical judgment.Using generic statins can save health care plans millions of dollars each year. The switch saves plans $70 to $80 a month per patientUSA Today April 3, 2007Dr. Mercola's Comment:Considering how damaging and life-threatening taking Lipitor or any other statin can be to your health, it's hard to believe that your doctor may be vigorously defending his or her right to prescribe them to patients anyway. But then again it is not surprising at all if you have been reading this newsletter for awhile. If you have...

    Clueless in America
    2006-11-28 21:10:00
Feeding the Tape Worms of Desire By Charles Sullivan 11/28/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- It may well be that there is no hope for the American republic, that we are by choice beyond reclamation. Much of the world sees the average American as detached from reality, isolated from the suffering of others. They see us as self-absorbed, over indulgent, willfully ignorant, and imbued with...
