| | Who should coach our All-Time Team? | | 2008-06-21 08:26:13 | |
Our man 'jrs' is working on the history of the Giants coaching tree. Soon, he will be giving you an in-depth look at every coach the Giants have ever had. I am looking forward to what we can all learn from that.
I want to vote on the coach for our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team next. To get that going, here is the short version.
The candidates are below, with a quick bio. We will be getting more detail from 'jrs,' on these guys, but this will get the voting started.
The candidates.
Steve Owen -- Coached the Giants from 1931-53. Won NFL titles in 1934 and 1938, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966. A 151-100-17 overall record.
Jim Lee Howell -- Succeeded Owen and coached from 1954-60. A 53-37-4 overall record and an NFL title in 1956.
Allie Sherman -- Coached from 1961-68, and was a two-time Coach of the Year. A 57-51-4 record, but probably gets demerits for coaching at the beginning of the 'Wilderness Years.'

He never dreamed of being an NFL coach and it wasn’t until 2003 when Oklahoma State University went to the Cotton Bowl that he realized coaching would be his career. A class act all around, Todd is known as a coach who demands the best from his squad and doesn’t mince words. Looks like Joel Quenneville got beat by the Wings again. This time, it was by former Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan, who was offered and accepted the position of San Jose Sharks head coach.
Apparently, McLellan was scheduled to interview with the Florida Panthers after meeting with the Sharks, but called it off because things went so well in San Jose. That must be nice. It's not so nice for Q, whose own interview wasn't as strong despite rumors suggesting he was the top candidate.
McLellan, on the other hand, was named by Terry Frei at the Denver Post as a top-flight candidate for the briefly-vacant top coaching job with the Avs. And when the Avs hired Tony Granato right out of the gate without so much as calling any other candidates, Frei lamented the lost opportunity. I'm with him on that one.

| | New Coach Same As The Old Coach | | 2008-05-22 15:25:55 | |
Please excuse my absence during the surprise announcement that Avalanche assistant coach (and former head coach) Tony Granato will be taking the reigns left to him by Joel Quenneville next season. Sometimes I actually have to do work at my job.
Anyway, it's probably not worth saying how disappointed I am, and not because I dislike Tony Granato---I don't---but because we all know the Avalanche needs a new direction from the top down. Recycling old coaches (and clinging to an old era) is probably not the best strategy for a team that could be seeing the departure of long-time captain Joe Sakic (this summer or next), not to mention Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote (eventually). Whether they like it or not, the Avalanche front office is going to have to start thinking toward the future.
Now, as for the selection of Granato, it's not really a shocker, honestly. Pierre Lacroix may not be the GM anymore, but he's still pulling the strings and you have to know that he p | | By: Mile High Hockey

Although regularly overlooked by the common fan, special teams consistently has been a hallmark of quality football teams, and can literally make or break a game. DeCamillis has been nothing short of a godsend for the Jags. He started his career at Denver, and moved to coach special teams under his now father-in-law Dan Reeves in NY. Afterwards, he jumped to Atlanta where he presided over a special teams monster for the better part of a decade. This man can flat out coach, and he’s got a reputation for doing so.
So back to the special teams part. First, when I did a big feature a few years ago on coverage and return units, breaking down all the aspects of special teams that go overlooked, even I was overwhelmed at how much there was to know. And of the six or seven coordinators I talked to, the two who impressed me the most were Harbaugh and Joe DeCamillis, who is now with the Jaguars. Both guys sounded like head coaches. You'd think, considering our serious hatred for anything and everyone associated with the Detroit Red Wings, that we fans of the Colorado Avalanche would be against hiring one of their assistant coaches for any job outside the Pepsi Center concession stands.
But you'd be wrong.
Todd McLellan, the mastermind behind Detroit's killer power play and an all-around solid coach, is apparently the top candidate for the head coaching job in Denver. And the fans are all for it. The Denver Post put McLellan up against Kevin Dineen, Ron Wilson and Tony Granato and it wasn't even close:
On a side note, Kevin Dineen has vowed to stay in the race despite his clear second-place finish and the numerical impossibility of him winning the poll.
McLellan also has the support of a former Avalanche defensmen, the impossible-to-pronounce-correctly-on-the-first-try Curtis Leschyshyn. Leschyshyn, now a competitive cyclist and a member of the early Avalanche team that won the Cup in 96, ha | | By: Mile High Hockey

| | Galiardi Signs, Coach Search Continues | | 2008-05-14 10:02:24 | | Two bits of info today: The Avalanche announced the signing of forward prospect TJ Galiardi to a new contract (really, the Avs need two TJs?), but, as MHH member Jori reports at Avs Prospects, the press release comes nearly two weeks after he actually signed. Maybe it just got lost in the shuffle with all this coaching vacancy business. Speaking of coaching vacancies, Adrian Dater has weighed in on the feedback he received regarding Patrick Roy's possible appearance as the top dog behind the Colorado bench. His verdict on whether or not it's a good idea is a resounding "maybe." Patrick Roy is also a very high-profile, opinionated man. That doesn’t quite fit the Avs’ M.O. for coaches. But the reason why I think he does and should have a shot at getting the job is he’s paid some dues already in Quebec, he only cares about one thing - winning - and knows the organization’s blueprint on how things are done. But has he paid enough dues? Maybe not. Th | | By: Mile High Hockey | | |

Jacksonville Jaguars Running Backs Coach Kennedy Pola
Kennedy Pola
Running Backs; born November 22, 1963, Pago, Pago, American Samoa. Fullback Southern California 1982-85. No pro playing experience. College coach: UCLA 1992-93, San Diego State 1994-96, Colorado 1997-98, San Diego State 1999, Southern California 2000-2003. Pro coach: Cleveland Browns 2004, joined Jaguars in 2005.
Pola is in his third season with Jacksonville after spending his first NFL season with the Browns. In 2006, his second season, the Jaguars set a single season franchise record for rushing yards (2,541) and averaged just short of 160 yards.
Kennedy comes from good football stock. To start, his nephew is Troy Polamalu, a first round pick of our hated rival... Pittsburg... Andy spent his college career at Notre Dame playing tackle under head coach Lou Houltz. Known as a physical and tenacious blocker, he helped anchor an OL that led the Fighting Irish with blocking which allowed for their dominating ground performances.
Notre Dame followed Coach Lou Holtz’s slow but effective formula for winning perfectly: grind it out (250 rushing yards per game) and play great defense (allowed only 12.3 points per game). Tony Rice led Notre Dame in both rushing (700 yards) and passing (1,176 yards) as the Fighting Irish played ball control en route to 32.6 points per game

Even though Ralph Routon contends: Many fans and observers feel Quenneville deserves most of the blame, and it's true the Avs have been postseason underachievers the past three years, never advancing past the second round. But unlike the Nuggets players, whose frustration with Karl is well-documented, the Avs don't appear to hold Quenneville responsible. Really? Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News had a great interview with ex-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr yesterday. The subject was, of course, Giants' third-round pick Mario Manningham, who played for Carr.
Here's a snippet.
DN: We know what the media reports have said about Mario Manningham, but you knew him well. What kind of a kid is he?
Carr: I think Mario is a young guy with enormous ability. I think he probably went to, like a lot of guys who come out early, he went to the combine without much preparation because he had a problem with his agent. So I think part of it is that he had some things that didn’t go well for him at the combine. He didn’t run very well. I look at Mario as a guy with enormous talent. He’s made some mistakes, and yet I think he’s with an organization that will give him good support. I think the biggest thing is, I’m sure and I’m confident that he’s learned some things in this process. He’s a young guy.

| | Punch Drunk in Aisle One: Barfly Picks Fight with Boxing Coach at Shop | | 2008-04-18 01:12:33 | | In boxing parlance, a "tomato can" is a hand-picked schlub brought in to go a few rounds with the champ, whose odds of scoring an upset are comparable to say, Madison, Wisconsin landing the next games of the Olympiad. While these guys are technically professional fighters, at least when they're not earning a living as roofers, drywallers and doing other jobs that don't require a background check, it's not uncommon for the town drunk to take one glassy-eyed look at one of these soft around the midriff ham 'n' eggers and think to themselves, "I could take 'em"--especially if he's facing the other way and I'm swinging a barstool. It's no accident then that "punch drunk" has become part of the lexicon as we'll see in this story. A London man, on the back end of a two-day drink and cocaine-fueled bender, “weekends” as Keith Richards calls ‘em, walked up to a fellow shopper, 23, and accused him of "gie' in evils” to him. The shopper tried to ignore him (having no clue what | | By: The Shark Guys | | |
| | Sherman Coach of the Year in '61 | | 2008-04-12 22:00:23 | | In 1960, after a devastating hit by Chuck Bednarik that left him hospitalized with a deep concussion and unconscious for a few days, Frank Gifford retired. Even without his biggest offensive star, Allie Sherman's first year as a coach was a huge success. With YA at QB (Sherman gave him a free hand in the huddle), Del Shofner to stretch the field, Kyle Rote running crossing routes, Joe Walton at TE (via a trade with the Redskins), and glue-fingered Alex Webster catching screens, the Giants became a glitzy aerial circus. They finished with a 10-3-1 record, good enough for the Eastern Division crown. The Green Bay squad they met in the NFL championship game had been turned into division winners in two short years, losing the title contest to the Eagles in '60 (17-13.) Using his personal relationship with JFK, Lombardi wangled a leave from the Army for Hornung so he could play in the '61 championship game. Besides Hornung, the Pack fielded 10 other future HOFers. | | Martin Fired as Coach | | 2008-04-11 15:48:00 | | Jacques Martin will no longer serve as the Florida Panthers' head coach. The report says he might be retained as the GM and that the decision was made solely out of a need to have a change at head coach. I'll say this much: I don't know whether or not is is Martin's fault the Panthers have continued to miss the playoffs. I really couldn't tell you much about his coaching style or how he connected with players or whatnot. Supposedly things weren't working out in the locker room, but I think that's irrelevant. The more important issue is that Martin didn't have much to work with. Perhaps there is a better candidate available, one better suited for the job and one who doesn't have to deal with the dual GM-Coach role. That's fine. But firing Martin based on coaching ability might not hold all that much water considering the player personnel the Panthers have right now. That's like firing Fredi Gonzalez after this season if he doesn't take the Marlins to the playoffs. The fact remains that the | | By: State of Miami | | |

| | Coach Q's Latest Poll Numbers Not So Good | | 2008-03-19 17:00:39 | | Adrian Dater is finally coming around: The chatter is definitely increasing. We here at the National Avalanche Security Agency are picking up lots more, especially when it comes to Joel Quenneville’s coaching decisions the other night in Minnesota. I’m not as big a Q basher as many fans, but I will say this: He had the wrong lineup against the Wild. He probably had one Cody too many, and his benching of Wojtek Wolski was, at this point in the season at least, counterproductive. He then goes on at length, naming each and every flub Coach Q made against Minnesota, which resulted in a 3-1 loss and a setback on the road to the playoffs. My favorite part: About the lineup the other night, not only was the wrong personnel in the game, but I didn’t like Q’s line combos much. Playing Ryan Smyth on a third line, with guys like Lappy and Tyler ("if it ain’t Edmonton, I ain’t scoring") Arnason was a disaster. Finally, by the end of the game, Smitty was | | By: Mile High Hockey | | |

| | Put Me in Coach, I'm Ready to Play | | 2008-03-04 10:49:00 | | As I write this post, it is an amazing 63 degrees here in New York. Spring definitely feels like it's in the air. There's going to be rain later today, but baseball is clearly on the way.I got to thinking about one of my favorite all-time videos, John Fogerty's 1985 tribute to old time baseball, "Centerfield." It's a great tune, and the entire video is nothing but classic baseball clips, of the old Brooklyn Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, etc., and the great players of yesteryear. So here is the video, courtesy of YouTube.I've always found most music videos pretty useless, but this is one of the best.Just three weeks to go until we play baseball for real. The video is just under four minutes. Enjoy. | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

Fisch worked as the Baltimore Ravens' assistant quarterbacks coach in 2007 and has spent the last seven seasons in the NFL during stints with Baltimore (2004-07) and Houston (2001-03). Fisch was on the Ravens' coaching staff during each of the last four years, including the 2006 campaign in which Baltimore posted a 13-3 record and won the AFC North. He worked as an offensive assistant (2004) and assistant quarterbacks/wide receivers coach (2005-06) with Baltimore before he was named the club's assistant quarterbacks coach in 2007. Although injuries forced Baltimore to use three different starting quarterbacks in 2007, the Ravens finished sixth in the NFL in lowest interception percentage (2.5) with Fisch as assistant quarterbacks coach. In Dater's latest mail bag (yes, I really want to type "male bag," but Adrian seems like a nice guy, so I won't), a fan writes: What gives? I've been an Avs fan since I thought they should be named the Grizzlies (before the Grizz moved to Utah), and I have yet seen an Avs coach do more with so little as Coach Q does. Why no love in Denver? Bloggers and posts here and elsewhere are always calling for his head! What do you say? So much with so little? Maybe a lot of people just kind of missed the first half of the season. I understand, since the only teams that get any publicity anymore are Pittsburgh, Washington, Ottawa and Detroit. Otto Pfister, head coach of Africa Cup of National finalist Cameroon (they play Egypt in the final tomorrow), told Germany's kicker.de he has been offered the job of U.S. Men's National Team coach. The job has been held by Bob Bradley for over a year. By nearly all accounts, Bradley has done a fine job. Pfister told kicker he would choose between the U.S. job and the South Korea spot, which had also been offered to him, but that he preferred the U.S. one because he wouldn't have to use an interpreter (I'm assuming he speaks English). | | Bills Add Fullback, Assistant Line Coach | | 2008-01-17 16:42:26 | | Ray Brown (Photo Source) After a Wednesday in which the Bills made several promotions amongst their offensive coaching staff, today they began filling out the coaching posts vacated by those with new responsibilities. The first hire? Long-time NFL lineman Ray Brown - one of the league's best guards for a long, long time - will become the assistant O-Line coach, replacing Sean Kugler, who is now the offensive line coach. Brown, 45, spent 20 years playing guard in the NFL. After retiring in 2005, Brown spent a year away from football before joining Joe Gibbs' staff in Washington as an assistant during the 2006 season. He spent '07 with Comcast, and now joins the Bills' staff with some coaching experience, a ton of playing experience, and plenty of talent. I'm a fan of this hire. Obviously, Kugler will have the most responsibility, but I think that Dick Jauron has it right in splitting some of the duties at this position. Kugler hasn't worked much with the running game in his one year at Buffalo; it's likely that while he'll have some say, Brown will be working largely with the interior linemen and the rushing attack. (That's just my educated guess, but it seems to fit.) At any rate, Brown is a young coach who will likely mesh well with the current players due to his vast playing experience. He's about as solid a hire as you can ask for. Bills Add FB Barnes to Roster Offensive coordinator Turk Schonert made plenty of promises yesterday after his promotion, and he's already delivered on one of them - he'll return to the two-back system after the free agent signing of fullback Darian Barnes. Barnes is an experienced young player, having spent time with the Jets and Cowboys during his six years as a pro. While he's certainly never going to statistically factor into an offensive attack, he's the type of hard-nosed, hit-loving back that the Bills haven't had since Daimon Shelton wasn't worthless. Don't expect Barnes to | | By: Buffalo Rumblings
| | OFFICIAL: Tony Sparano hired as head coach | | 2008-01-16 09:38:46 | | **UPDATE #3**: Just some notes from the press conference that just concluded. One of the first things Sparano said was, "We have a lot of work to do." What an understatement that is. Like Cam believed, Sparano said numerous times that character people are important. He believes, "discipline is critical," as he said. He also said that he will work his players hard, but have a good relationship with them. He claims to have had good relationships with his players in the past, which is a far cry from Cam last season. Tony also stressed, "Our players will be in outstanding shape." Beware, Mr. Shelton (among others). That's all for now. [end update #3] **UPDATE #2**: It's official. According to the team's official site, Tony Sparano has been hired as the next Miami Dolphins head coach. The press conference has been scheduled for noon eastern time and can be seen LIVE on miamidolphins.com. Also, the Sun-Sentinel is reporting that the deal is worth $11 million over 4 years. [end update #2] **UPDATE**: Well the Palm Beach Post is now reporting the hiring as fact: The Dolphins have hired Tony Sparano to be their next head coach, a source said Wednesday morning. Sparano, the Dallas Cowboys assistant head coach, arrived in South Florida Tuesday night for his second interview, and had dinner with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga and General Manager Jeff Ireland, who said he hoped to have an announcement within the next couple of days. It came much sooner than that. As soon as I hear any official word or know of a press conference, I'll pass along the info. [end update] There are reports rolling in now that the Dolphins and Tony Sparano have reached an agreement for Sparano to become the next Miami Dolphins head coach. The first report to roll in was from Jay Glazer: FOX Sports has learned that the Dolphins have tabbed Dallas assistant coach Tony Sparano as their new head coach, replacing the fired Cam Cameron. | | REPORT: Tony Sparano to be named head coach of Dolphins | | 2008-01-15 19:19:09 | | **UPDATE**: The Post now has a few comments made by Jeff Ireland about Sparano and the current situation: "He's got another long day tomorrow," Ireland told The Palm Beach Post after escorting Sparano and his wife, Jeannette, to the elevator at their hotel Tuesday night. "We're going to grind him a little bit more with Mr. Huizenga and take it from there." Asked if he hoped to make an announcement within the next couple of days, Ireland said "I hope so." A few minutes later, Ireland was out of his suit and tie. He emerged in the hotel lobby in jeans and a T-shirt and chatted briefly with Dolphins football operations boss Bill Parcells, who was turning in for the night. We're getting closer...[end update] The Palm Beach Post is reporting that the Dolphins are close to signing Tony Sparano to be the next head coach. We knew that Jeff Ireland was flying to Dallas today to pick up Sparano. The Post reports the plane landed in Ft. Lauderdale just before 6 pm EST, at which time Ireland, Sparano, and new assistant director of player personnel Brian Gaine got into an SUV and headed to Davie. The report also says the following: The Dolphins are expected to offer the job to Sparano with a news conference possible Wednesday. The Denali driver, who last week said he shuttled Michael Jordan around South Florida golf courses, hinted big news could be around the corner for one of his passengers but didn't elaborate. This should come as no surprise to anyone. I just can't wait for this to become offical so we can move on and begin putting together a coaching staff. Any ideas as to who might become the next offensive or defensive coordinator? | | By: The Phinsider | | |
