| | The Popularity of the Cocktail Shaker | | 2008-08-04 00:00:00 | | The cocktail shaker is a bar accessory that has been around for a very long time, in one form or another, and it continues to be a very popular item at just about every bar you go to. | | Basil-Lime Sorbet Turned Cocktail | | 2008-07-10 07:59:00 | | Again, driven by the excess of an ingredient, I made Basil Lime Sorbet. Whenever I buy basil, I get way more than I need, but I hate wasting the beautiful and aromatic herbs. I found this recipe and it seemed like fate. I had an abundance of limes too.Basil Lime Sorbet~adapted from Mark Logan's recipe3/4 cup sugar1/4 cup strong honey ( I used bamboo honey.)3/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice, approximately 6 limes20 fresh basil leaves, minced1. Place sugar and 3/4 cup of water in a small sauce pot. Bring to a boil and allow to boil for 1 minute, making a simple syrup.2. Pour the simple syrup in a blender. Add the honey, lime juice, and fresh basil. Puree.3. Pour into a freezer safe container and freeze, stirring every couple of hours, whenever you think of it. It will take about a day to be solid enough. My main alteration from the original recipe was using honey. I felt that the honey was an important flavor but overall, it was a bit sweet too sweet for me. As I was enjoying the refreshi | | By: FoodMayhem | | |

| Prawn and Avocado Cocktail | | 2008-07-05 05:36:33 | | Prawn cocktail is such an eighties dish isn’t it? Overcooked prawns with a stodgy marie-rose sauce on wilted lettuce. No thanks. Here’s a zesty alternative that we just love.

However, one thing I can tell you about my husband is that fourteen canaries can stand shoulder to shoulder on his erect thing."After this, the first one looks shamefaced and says, "Girls, I've got a confession to make: I was just trying to impress you. | | | Hosting a Cocktail Party Can Be An Easier Way to Entertain! | | 2008-03-07 15:23:37 | | Cocktail parties are a fun way to catch up with old friends, or entertain people from work. And they are so much easier to plan and execute as these parties last for mostly an hour or two, and as the menu has only drinks and appetizers, perhaps some desserts, they do not require a lot of work! The other thing I love about cocktail parties is that they can easily be hosted inside your house, out on a patio or club-house, or you can choose to host a happy-hour at a restaurant or cafe, which can...

| | An explosive cocktail. | | 2008-02-03 14:00:00 | | February 4 A veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar called Thomas Davey officially took over as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) on February 4, 1813. By most accounts he was completely unsuitable for the position, being lazy, incompetent, and hard-drinking. His only real claim to fame is as the inventor of a famous drink called ‘Blow my Skull’ which was said to be mixed in a cask and served in half-pint glasses. The ‘original’ recipe for this beverage is in Australia’s first cookbook, written by the Tasmanian politician Edward Abbott. Abbott describes the drink as a mix of boiling water, sugar, lime or lemon-juice, ale or porter, rum, and brandy – making it a very potent cocktail (or punch) indeed. Other ‘original’ recipes include a variety of other ingredients such as Madeira, gin, claret, opium and cayenne pepper. Abbott says that Davey enjoyed his drink as an accompaniment to roast pig, but the idea made me wonder about the more mode | | By: The Old Foodie | | |

That's right! Don't show up empty-handed!Nice girl that I am, I scouted the market and picked some nice cocktail rings for your pretty fingers! :)Now, I am not a fan of imitation or fake jewelry, but when it comes to cocktail rings, I'll close one eye and understand that to buy a real precious stone in the size these rings come in, it's truly expensive. Like this beautiful citrine ringCitrine Ring $3,375Why spend so much when we can have this pretty ruby ring from emitations.com?Ruby CZ Ring $119Or any of the following rings from Ross-Simons.com for a much more affordable price.Blue Topaz Ring $146Lemon Quartz Ring $274Amethyst Cocktail Ring $195Just don't go "too cheap". | | Shrimp Cocktail. | | 2007-09-25 21:27:00 | | September 26th … The Golden Gate Casino in Las Vegas celebrated the sale of 25 million servings of its famous shrimp cocktail on this day in 1991. The casino started serving the shrimp cocktail in 1959, at which time it cost 50c. Inflation caught up with it along the way, and it is now 99c, which still sounds like a bargain when you consider that the cocktail is served in a 6 ounce glass and there is no padding, not even lettuce. It is pure shrimp with cocktail sauce. What I want to know is – who did the counting? The famous Tour d’Argent restaurant in Paris is famous for its Pressed Duck, and since 1890 when Edward VIII got official serving number one, every guest who orders the dish is presented with a numbered card. The one millionth serving was in April 2003, and the numbers are now beyond 1.2 million. One million in over a century is not as big a counting effort as 25 million in 32 years. I bet they just estimated. The casino cocktail sauce is, of course, secret, so this one will have to do. It is from The American People’s Cookbook (1956), and is pure 1950’s. Get Retro and make it. Shrimp with Peppy Cocktail Sauce.1 ½ lbs fresh shrimp with shells.Chill in refrigerator until ready to serve. For Peppy Cocktail Sauce:To make about 1 cup sauce, mix thoroughly in a small bowl1 cup ketchup1 tablespoon lemon juice1 teaspoon onion juice¼ teaspoon Worcestershire saucefew drops Tabasco sauce1 tablespoon sugar1 tablespoon prepared horseradish½ teaspoon salt¼ teaspoon Accent*.Chill in refrigerator. For completing cocktail:Arrange in 6 chilled sherbert glasses:Lettuce or curly endiveArrange about 5 shrimps in each glass. Top each serving with the Peppy Cocktail Sauce. *Accent is a commercial brand of MSG, and as such could (and perhaps should) be left entirely out of the picture. Although, having said that, there are no doubt commercial brands of ketchup that contain plenty of MSG. Tomorrow’s Story … Lunchwrap. Quotation for the Day … I think somebody should come up with a way to breed a very large shrimp. That way, you could ride him, then, after you camped at night, you could eat him. How about it, science? Jack Handey. | | By: The Old Foodie

| | Tales of the Cocktail Wrap Up | | 2007-07-23 19:06:17 | | I have returned from New Orleans with so much to write about that it will probably take a few days to cover everything. Also, I’ve used up every energy reserve I have, so I’m sleepy and my mind seems to be having a hard time recalling everything I’ve done in the past five days. That’s what happens when you only get four to five hours of sleep per night and then spend 14+ hours getting home. I think I’ll tackle this in reverse chronological order since the most recent memories are the easiest to remember.

After taking inventory of Darcy’s liquor collection, I decided to award my favourites. I will openly admit that my taste buds are not as refined as Darcy’s and that I have not even come close to sampling everything in his bar. Some of the awards are simply based on experience. I have included a couple of additional categories for extra credit towards my homework. I’m sure that Darcy has already reviewed most of my selections so I will post a link to what the expert thinks.
And the winners are, drum roll please

| | Perspective of a Cocktail Widow | | 2007-07-19 17:25:00 | | by Caroline O'Neil
Many of you may wonder what it is like to live with a real bartender. It certainly has its advantages. Personally I could not make a decent cocktail to save my life. Sure I can make the foolproof drink that only has two ingredients, such as a screwdriver. Anything more complicated than this and it is a complete train wreck. Over the years, I have learned a lot from Darcy but I certainly prefer him behind the bar. I think back to our waffle making competitions we held every week early in our relationship. We came up with the perfect waffle recipe that we still enjoy every weekend. Now Darcy is pretty crafty because he let me win the waffle competition. Guess what? Seven years later and I’m still making the waffles. Therefore, I have no intention of entering the cocktail competition with him. I’ve learned my lesson; I will sit back and simply enjoy his wonderful creations.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as Darcy’s secretary/wife. For the next few days I will become the Cocktail Widow. I have been a part of the Art of Drink in spirit. However, I am now in the vicarious position of maintaining Darcy’s website in his absence. Some of you are fortunate to be attending Tales of the Cocktail with Darcy but most of us are stuck at home. Now I would have been very disappointed if I was left at home in a Canadian snowstorm while he basked in the sun. However, it is still summer here so I plan on catching a few rays myself. First of all, I would like to submit a disclaimer that if his website goes up in flames during his absence I am not responsible. So what are my credentials? Well, I can’t even enter the previous discussion of Bartender vs Mixologist because I would classify myself as a mere guinea pig. I have been subjected to many of Darcy’s creations over the years and I’m still aliv | | By: The Art of Drink
| | Tales of the Cocktail Agenda | | 2007-07-17 16:41:03 | | The week is finally here and I’ll be flying out early tomorrow morning to New Orleans. I think tomorrow may very well be a 20+ hour day. Up at 4AM to get to the airport and the VIP dinner is tomorrow night, which may lead to a long, but fun, evening. Anyway, my agenda is pretty full so I’m not sure how many posts I’ll get to do while I’m in New Orleans, plus I lost my PDA which I was going to use to post (yay, my wife found it, so expect more posts!). I’ve lined up a guest blogger who’ll provide some humorous content on Friday. A full write up, with pictures, will be forth coming when I return. So here’s what going on in New Orleans.

| | | The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess | | 2007-07-05 03:25:20 | | The Internet is awash with videos of how to make cocktails, but as we have seen, many of them are very, very bad. But thankfully the Small Screen Network has taken production values, and mixology, seriously and created The Cocktail Spirit, which is hosted by Robert “Drinkboy” Hess. Each week Robert talks about something mixology related, be it a classic cocktail, how to setup a bar or interviews with industry people. As many of you know Robert is a dedicated advocate for the classic cocktail. He also takes his drinking seriously, so when you’re watching each episode take note of the excruciating detail of every drink being made. I’m waiting for the episode where Robert shows us his modern cocktail creating skills and creates something brand new. Check it out.

| | Spirit and Cocktail Advertising Network | | 2007-06-28 01:02:18 | | What do you do after almost two years of blogging about cocktails and spirits? Some people let their blogs decay into irrelevance, others continue with the status quo and others decide to move to the next level. What’s the next level you ask? Well hopefully bringing more content to the site, such as videos (which I’m really interested in doing, but only if they are done professionally), mixology research and increased posting frequency. But to achieve that, without dropping my standard of living, which would make my wife very unhappy, requires some form of income. So providing ad space for food and beverage related companies can help bring this site to the next level. If I spend anymore time on the Internet my wife could very well have me checked into an Internet Addiction Rehab Center. After the last “intervention” type incident, I promised her that my time spent on the Internet was to be for beneficial purposes only. If I can prove to her t | | By: The Art of Drink | | |

It also raised a number of additional questions regarding this ever so important, but often overlooked, cocktail ingredient. I’ll be answering a few questions and doing some technical talk about the properties of ice. So put your thinking caps on because we are going to learn a little bit about thermochemistry. We’ll also take a look at making clear ice.

| | Off the Cuff Cocktail | | 2007-05-12 05:19:23 | | As a bartender you are often confronted with requests to make a person “something special”. This is usually done by a girl, but on rare occasions men have been know to say similar things. Most men say make me something strong, not so much special. But when these occasions arise some bartenders, like myself, relish the challenge, other bartenders grunt and mix up a San Francisco. For those not in the industry, many bartenders have a single “go to cocktail” that is the answer to every “make me something special” request, a popular one being the San Francisco. As for me, I’ll make something off the cuff and on the fly.

| | Cocktail Hall of Shame | | 2007-05-03 04:35:33 | | When you write a blog, you try to keep things interesting by writing about a bunch of different subjects. Most of the time I write about cocktails and drinks I like, or what’s popular. That can get old. So I decided that I should occasional write about things I don’t like and see what we can learn from it. Hence, the Cocktail Hall of Shame. This may become a semi-regular subject looking at bad cocktails and/or bad bartenders. These regular subjects really help when writers block or apathy set in.

| | Browsing the Cocktail Blogosphere Part VI | | 2007-04-08 17:34:48 | | The world of blogging continues to roll on. Every few months I find a few more cocktail and spirit related blogs that I add to my reading list. In the last few months the number of new cocktail related blogs has thinned out, so I’ve supplemented with a couple of spirit related blogs and a few industry related blogs. This isn’t anything new, but just an observation that cocktail blog growth seems to be stagnating. Also, anyone who has a blog should participate in the upcoming Mixology Monday blogging events (April 16, Champagne Cocktails). It is a great way to get links to your blog and generate interest in what you have to say on the matter. Blogging is only fun if people know about your site, otherwise you are just talking to yourself and that is just weird.
