Mobility, not Unified Communications, top priority for businesses
    2008-06-17 15:13:20
Unified Communications (UC) is getting a lot of publicity in the tech media these days. But the big push by manufacturers to integrate chat and presence with existing communication systems may not drive sales as much as initially expected.A recent Forrester survey of 2,187 North American and European companies stated there is "confusion about the value" of unified communications for their company. It seems that UC is regarded as a "nice, but not critical" application for communication systems. In fact, UC is not even the number 1 priority for corporations, mobility is. 64% of the respondents in the Forrester survey indicate that "providing more mobility support to employees is a priority", with 23% citing it as a critical priority.Unfortunately, mobility is a trickier topic than UC for many communication systems due to the complexities of multiple cellular carriers, mobile devices, and operating systems. Getting all 3 pieces of that puzzle to work together is a daunting task

Where does video fit in a unified communications strategy?
    2008-05-19 09:47:02
Credit: NetworkWorld.com Michael Osterman, 05/15/2008The average American watches television more than 4.5 hours each day. A Nielsen study found that 81 million people, or 63% of broadband users, watched broadband video at home or at work as of March 2007. But how often do we use video in the context of workplace communications? More to the point, when was the last time you participated in a videoconference as part of your work?Obviously, e-mail and telephony are widely used for workplace communication. Instant messaging and audio conferencing are used somewhat less, but are still very popular. But videoconferencing really doesn’t get all that much use. Here are my theories as to why:* Videoconferencing is not as easy as other forms of communication. For example, a 2005 HP study found that the most common drawbacks to videoconferencing were technical: it requires too much planning, it’s too complicated and there are too few videoconferencing rooms in which to hold a meeting. BlackBerry users tie into PBX for unified communications
    2008-05-15 15:33:35
Credit: NetworkWorld.comEnterprises are starting to use the BlackBerry in a new way: as a means of taking their desk phones mobile. Research In Motion, known mainly as a mobile e-mail vendor, is making a surprising effort to leverage the voice side of the BlackBerry smartphone, positioning its server software as a way to blend cellular and corporate voice networks by linking the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) with the corporate PBX.The result is a set of capabilities, achieved without major infrastructure changes, that many enterprises probably will find compelling. They include a single corporate telephone number that rings on a cell phone, an office phone, a business phone at home, or on a BlackBerry, extending PBX features to the BlackBerry. (Compare unified communications products.) Fayetteville State University (FSU) in North Carolina experienced the power of RIM's Mobile Voice System (MVS) when a key storage-area network suffered a catastrophic failure, says Joseph

    2008-04-24 07:09:00
The GSM Association, the global trade association for the mobile industry, has called on the Indian government to cut in half the 5% levy on telecom operators’ gross adjusted revenues, which is channeled into the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). The levy is increasing operators’ costs and ultimately the cost of mobile services for consumers. The GSMA recommends that the unspent $2.5 billion in India’s USOF be used to help tackle the bottlenecks, such as a lack of backhaul capacity

Buy Spice Communications target Rs 70
    2008-03-14 04:22:00
Investment Rationale M&A Prospects Add Flavor to Wireless Growth Target Rs70 Spice’s leverage to Indian wireless has, to a large extent, been restored. Moreover, we believe its suitability as an M&A target provides icing on the cake. Ramping up coverage in Punjab and on its weaker Karnataka circle should yield robust EBITDA growth (approx 45% CAGR over CY06-09E). We rate the stock a Buy (1M) with a target of Rs70 based on a 15% M&A premium to DCF. Coverage increase key Presence in fast growing markets – Punjab (33% penetration) and Karnataka (22%) – offers potential, especially as Spice moves to augment its market share in the latter (approx 9%). The recent pick-up in share of net adds in Karnataka bodes well. Reducing capital constraints will help further. Tower outsourcing depresses margins, factoring moderate improvement About 50% of Spice’s cell sites are on independent towers (70% of CY07 BTS adds). Sliding scale pricing, coupled with single tenancy on 80

Global System for Mobile communications "GSM"
    2008-01-16 22:56:49
Global System for Mobile communications (GSM: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 82% of the global mobile market uses the standard. GSM is used by over 2 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are digital call quality, and so is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication were built into the system using the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).The key advantage of GSM systems to consumers has been better voice quality and low-cost alternatives to making calls, such as the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"). The advantage for network operators has been the ease of deploying equipment from any vendors that implement the standard. Like other cellular standards, GSM allows network operators to offer roaming services so that subscribers can use their phones on GSM networks all over the world.Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capabilities, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release '99 introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).HistoryIn 1982, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) created the Groupe Spécial Mobile (GSM) to develop a standard for a mobile telephone system that could be used across Europe. In 1987, a memorandum of understanding was signed by 13 countries to develop a common cellular telephone system across Europe. In 1989, GSM responsibility was transferred to the European Telecommunications Sta
