Practice Good Computer Maintenance Regards to Data Recovery
    2008-05-08 19:28:44
In the event your computer’s hard drive goes kaput, you will probably need to turn to a data recovery specialist to help retrieve your lost data. Anybody who has used a computer often will have felt how it feels to lose data. It may have been forgetting to save a written document before the computer crashes or perhaps even experiencing a total data loss when a hard drive ceases to function. Hard drives nowadays are becoming better & more dependable. In fact, I have been using mine since middle 2004 without any problems. Wow, it’s almost 5 years down the road without a single major glitch!*WHhoooTTtt! *Yeah, I am so proud of it! I prefer the Maxtor brand. I did not have a good experience with Seagate hard drives prior to 2004. Regardless of the brand, hard drives are mechanical in nature & are susceptible to encounter problems especially without good computer maintenance. I must admit that my computer’s hard drive had suddenly crashed once or twice a few months ago. It did

Your Computer keyboard could be filthier than a toilet seat
    2008-05-06 13:59:00
According to a study by British microbiologist, James Francis COMPUTER KEYBOARDS are filthier and infested with more bacteria than toilet seats. He compared samples from 33 keyboards to swabs from a loo seat and a door handle of a public toilet. Many keyboards had dangerous levels killer bacteria such as the dreaded E coli that causes diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and loss of appetite; and S aureus, which causes skin infections like pimples, boils and abscesses. Two keyboards had dangerous levels of coliform bacteria that are found in faeces and cause gastroenteritis. One of the keyboards had to be discarded because it was five times dirtier than the toilet seat and home to 150 times the acceptable limit of bacteria. “[It] was increasing the risk of its user becoming ill,” said James Francis. “I haven’t seen a reading like that in a very long time – it was off the scale.”The results were published in Which? How to Clean Your Computer Motherboard (Mainboard)
    2008-05-04 05:01:00
If you have not done the inspection mentioned in the previous article - How to Clean your Case, now is the time to do so. Look at the blades of the fan in the back of the computer. Also look at any vents. Is there clusters of dust there? Is there grime caked on to it? If so, the inside needs to be cleaned. If the fan blades are clean but it has been several years since you have cleaned the motherboard or if the computer is around cigarette smoke, it probably should be cleaned anyway. Dust and particles in the air (like cigarette smoke) can build up on the circuitry of the motherboard and cause it to heat up and/or corrode. The first thing that you need to do is unplug your computer. Then open up the case to get access to the motherboard. Cases open differently. If you don't know how to open your case, look on the back of your computer along the edge for some screws. These screws may hold on side panels or an upside down U shaped panel that covers the sides and top. Removing the screws w

How to Clean Your Computer Case
    2008-05-04 04:58:00
There is nothing wrong with leaving spills, dirt, and stains on your computer case. After all isn't that what the case is for, to protect the electronic components inside from spills and dirt? This is true, but there are still parts of the case that need to be cleaned and checked if you want your computer to live a long and prosperous life.Unless you like looking at dirt every time you look at your computer, you should go ahead and clean those spills, stains, and dust off of the case. You can do this with just about any cloth and cleaner. Do not use highly abrasive cleaners that might ruin or mar the surface and do not use solvents on plastic. A wet sponge will even work. Just make sure that the cleaner or any liquid does not seep into the inside through cracks and vents. If there is any possibility that you are going to get that messy, turn off and unplug the computer first and wait to turn it back on until any liquid has had a chance to fully dry. After you have wiped off the outside,

    2008-05-03 02:36:00
What do you think is a more effective way of repairing your PC system registry files? Taking it into your local computer repair shop or downloading a piece of diagnostics software to get the job done? Quite honestly it's not a cut and dry answer, but this article will explore the differences. More specifically we'll discuss how trial and error effects your bill, why software is consistent, and which choice is best for your PC problems. By the end of this article you should be able to decide if trying PC repair software is a good choice for you next time you run into a hardware of software error. The Trial and Error Process of TechniciansYou probably don't realize it but even those positioned as computer experts rarely know exactly what the problem is without first running some tests. Just like a doctor or auto repair tech there is a trial and error portion to diagnosing and repairing a problem. Computer peripherals – to accelerate the performance of your PC
    2008-05-03 02:17:00
Computer peripheral is a term that is sometimes referred exclusively for devices that are connected externally, generally those that are connected through some form of computer bus like the USB. Its most commonexamples include joysticks, printers and scanners. However in a mixed opinion, some people say, internal devices like the video capture cards are not really computer peripherals since they are added inside the computer case. In their opinion the term peripherals is exclusively reserved for devices that are hooked up externally to the computer. It is arguable however whether PCMCIA cards qualify as peripherals under this biased definition. Because there are some hard wares that go fully inside the laptop, while some others like WiFi cards, have external appendages.Due to these deliberations, the term is hardly used these days. Earlier these were used to refer to things like floppy disk drives and modems. Now a day’s most of these devices are integrated inside the computer's case.

Computer Diagnostics Programs as Prevention Tools
    2008-04-29 09:53:08
Two of the most popular computer diagnostic softwares are Norton Systemworks & PC Doctor. Both programs feature full diagnostic capability to fix virtually every software related computer problem. After selecting which diagnostic test you plan to use like a full system scan or just certain parts of your computer, the program will perform the test & provide the results the awaits for your approval to fix the problem. The diagnostic software can usually fix the problem as long as it is not a hardware problem.Hardware failures like hard drive crashes require more than diagnostics software to fix the problem; more like having the hardware repaired or replaced. Reporting a problem to you about the faulty hardware can be done by the diagnostics software but repairing it requires the work of a skilled hardware technician. Norton Systemworks also offers Ghost, which is an easy data backup application. In general, computer diagnostic programs are ideal for preventing computer problems b

Backup Your Computer’s BIOS before Tweaking
    2008-04-28 09:20:46
You can use system diagnostics softwares to identify any problem or failure when a computer is showing some signs of problems. The problems could include slow startups, devices not functioning, or even system crashes. The diagnostics softwares will test the computer system, including the BIOS & memory, software, & hardware that is attached to the computer. Diagnostics software normally starts with a BIOS examination. The computer BIOS can tell a lot of things to the diagnostics software ranging from the common settings to those that have a major impact on the computer system. It is not recommended for one to modify the BIOS settings because it can lead to serious problems with the computer. Nonetheless, with some knowledge, one can tweak the BIOS settings for a better computer performance. Being so, one should create a backup of the BIOS settings in case of emergencies after tweaking. Your motherboard manufacturer should provide the utility for making BIOS backups or flash new o

Basic Solutions for a Slow Computer
    2008-04-28 09:20:28
Very low system resources are a common problem with computers & are the result of either a low amount of RAM or low disk space. Hence, you will experience your computer operating in a slower manner than usual. The solution would be to defragment your computer’s hard drive & delete the files that are not required & no longer used. However, do not go into the operating sytem’s folder & start deleting files & folders that you do not understand its purpose. Stick to your own files & folders for deletion. The software that I use to boost my computer’s start up process is the Startup Control Panel software. It work splendid with XP but the new Windows Vista does not like it & limits its application. You may want to download one for free at the Mlin.net website (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).

    How to Keep Computer Clean?
    2008-04-28 03:14:00
Cleaning The PC :Ever hear a strange noise coming from your computer. Maybe it sounds like a plane about to take off. That's the sound of a fan that needs to be cleaned. You may notice that your computer case has holes in the front and side. These holes allow air to pass through the case. Usually air is pulled from the front of the case over the hard drive past the motherboard and out the back of the case.Usually there are two fans that accomplish this. One fan is usually mounted on the back of the case and the other is in the power supply. There is also a fan that is located on top of the CPU's heatsink. The outer rim of the fans will eventually get a build up of dirt around them. This will cause the fan to wobble causing it to make noise or even stop. The best way to clean your computer is with a can of compressed air. Simply take the cover off of the case and spray the inside with the compressed air. Spray the fans and make sure they spin easily. Check the heatsink and make sure you

Seven Tips to Having a Healthy Computer
    2008-04-26 03:26:00
Submitted by emsiDecatur, GA – Whether we are part of a small business, a multinational, or are just trying to find a recipe online at home, we seem to spend just as much time fixing ‘issues’ and ‘conflicts’ on our computers as we do working on them. For the home user this is merely an inconvenience, but to a business it can add up to tens of thousands of dollars lost to decreased productivity or repairs. Although the mere thought of trying to ‘fix’ a computer would cause a cold sweat to break out in most of us, it is in fact the simple little things that even the most timid technophile could prevent, which cause the majority of our desktop woes.Malware, viruses, identity theft and spyware account for about 80% of all computer issues resulting in downtime,” reveals IT guru Chip Reaves. “It is estimated that the lost-productivity cost due to these alone is around $50 billion, and the associated IT costs of dealing with it has skyrocketed from $20 billion to $198 billio

    Self-healing computer systems for spacecraft

We've all heard about the space missions that are DOA when NASA engineers lose touch with the spacecraft or lander. In other cases, some critical system fails and the mission is compromised. Both are maddening scenarios because the spacecraft probably could be easily fixed if engineers could just get their hands on the hardware for a few minutes. Computer Weirdness in Movies
    2008-04-14 21:39:00
    - A hacker can get into the most sensitive computer in the world before intermission and guess the secret password in two tries.- Any PERMISSION DENIED has an OVERRIDE function. (See "Demolition Man" and countless others)- Complex calculations and loading of huge amounts of data will be accomplished in under three seconds. Movie modems transmit data at a speed of two gigabytes per second.- When the power plant/missile site/whatever overheats, all the control panels will explode, as will the entire building.- If you display a file on the screen and someone deletes the file, it also disappears from the screen. (e.g., "Clear and Present Danger")- If a disk has got encrypted files, you are automatically asked for a password when you try to access it.- No matter what kind of computer disk it is, it'll be readable by any system you put it into. All application software is usable by all computer platforms.- The more high-tech the equipment, the more buttons it has ("Aliens"). However, everyon

On Fitna, Bloggers vs. Hackers, and Computer Illiterate MPs
    2008-04-12 07:37:51
Fitna is a short film by Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, which explores Qur'anic motivation for terrorism and Islam in the Netherlands (explanatory stolen from Wikipedia). On April 7, Indonesia has blocked access to YouTube and a couple of other websites such as MySpace and Multiply. The Minister of Information and Communications Muhammad Nuh has passed a bill that forces 146 ISP's in Indonesia to block access to YouTube. Kompas has confirmed that the reason for the block is Youtube's refusal to remove Fitna from their servers. After a week of public debates and overwhelming protests, Nuh has apologised for ordering the blocking of Youtube, Multiply and a few other sites which host the video Fitna, and the virtual community in Indonesia can relax, sit back, and exhale for a while. There is still one thing to be dealt with, though. A guy who is dubbed as a telemathics expert (and I just found out that telemathics is a science of communicating over long distances, from here), accused

Safer cell phone and computer laptop batteries
    2008-04-11 10:43:13
Lithium-ion batteries supply the power for cell phones and PDAs, and larger devices such as laptops, cordless screwdrivers and lawnmowers are becoming increasingly dependent on this power source. The advantage of these power storage devices lies in their high energy density and voltage (up to four volts). In terms of safety, however, they have one disadvantage -- the organic electrolytes are flammable and can easily catch fire. read more

MD Computer Services Tax Repealed; GA Tax Plans Die
    2008-04-07 23:00:00
In the last moments of Maryland's legislative session, the problematic computer services tax was repealed. It had been scheduled to take effect on July 1. In its place, however, the Legislature is "temporarily" imposing a new top individual income tax rate of 6.25 percent on the 6,000 Marylanders who had incomes over $1 million, for 2008 to 2010. See here for more on the computer services tax.The Baltimore Sun notes that the computer services industry had been singled out for the tax because it had no lobbyists in Annapolis. They do now.The Georgia tax reform plans, which we discussed here, all died on the Legislature's adjournment on April 4. The various plans included property tax eliminations, elimination of the car tax, and income tax reductions. (Hat tip: COST)
