The Greatest Do Nothing Congress in the Last Twenty Years
    2008-08-19 21:11:03
The Democrats dubbed the 109th congress, led by Republicans, as the do nothing congress but it appears as though the current congress has done less than any other congress in the last twenty years.  Don’t get me wrong, the Democrats have managed to do something, just look at this list: Congress has saluted such milestones as the [...]

American Petroleum Institute Sends Letter to Congress rejecting Gang of 10
    2008-08-18 00:59:41
Late last week, the American Petroleum Institute released a letter that its President and CEO Red Cavaney sent to Capitol Hill about the "Gang of Ten" proposal. As you know, the "Gang of Ten" includes five Republican (Lindsey Graham being one) and five Democratic senators who have reached across the aisle to destroy our chances of offshore drilling.Since the bill has been the topic of many discussions in recent days, I thought many of you would like to see API's response to it (Thank you to Jane Van Ryan of API for sending me this letter):August 13, 2008Dear Senator:The bipartisan “Group of 10” senators recently released a summary of their proposed energy plan. Like many others, API was hopeful that a new proposal would show the way to break the current deadlock in Congress. Our view is that the next step on energy policy should be to expand access to vital domestic oil and natural gas resources as a complement to the measures Congress approved last year on efficiency, technology an

Call Congress Back! The Petition Drive & The SC Factor & McCain
    2008-08-05 16:27:00
PAGING DR. GINGRICHWouldn't it be interesting if the GOP members of Congress have tapped into something with their protest against Nancy Pelosi?  The latest Gallup numbers show there is a window, just a small one, but there is a window of opportunity to make some inroads in the House this year.  I think the American people want to see a little bit of courage.  And, like Medved pointed out yesterday on his show, they don't like to vote for "angry" people.  If they can keep their heads.... (nah, that was a pipe dream).According to The Hill, Newt ...

McCain Finally Understands the Message: Attack Congress and Drill Here
    2008-08-05 13:27:10
John McCain is finally receiving audiences that really make a difference in a campaign. This past Monday, thousands of motorcyclists greeted John McCain at one of the largest biker rallies in America. These are typically the Reagan Democrats that have been the deciding factor in so many Republican victories.McCain addressed the crowd by stating:"As you may know, not long ago a couple hundred thousand Berliners made a lot of noise for my opponent. I'll take the roar of 50,000 Harleys any day."I could not have said it better myself. The fact of the matter is that 50,000 American motorcyclists have a better chance of electing our President than all the European citizens that Obama can muster after a concert. Moreover, McCain seems to be getting the fact that he should be running against Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid who are widely unpopular. In response to Madame Speaker's shutting down of Congress and CSPAN to fly back home on her private jet to San Francisco, John McCain said:"Tell em'

    Congress and Alternative Energy
    2008-08-04 14:53:00
Congress has left for August recess without extending renewable energy tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of 2008. Congress will meet for three more weeks this year, in September. The debate in the Senate, where Republicans blocked the latest attempt to extend the tax credits, is not about renewable energy. Everyone seems to be in favor of it. The argument is over how to fund it. The most recent plan, for a short term credit extension, was to levy more taxes on hedge funds and to delay certain tax breaks for multinational companies. Republicans did not like it. They also wanted to focus more on domestic oil drilling.A compromise may be in the works. A group of ten senators--five Republicans and five Democrats--has proposed opening up parts of the Gulf of Mexico for oil drilling. The tax revenues generated from these new projects can be used to fund renewable energy. Even if the plan is not adopted, it shows that progress is being made. Come September, a bill will probably b

McCain Needs to Run Against the Democratic Congress
    2008-08-04 13:01:44
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took control of Congress in 2006 after people refused to tolerate Big Government Republicanism any longer. The Republicans, who once stood for smaller government, simply went against their conservative principles and were punished accordingly. But, with that being said, I doubt that many of the American people who voted for the Democrats knew what they were really getting in return. In order to get elected, the Democrats promised to make government more transparent and to allow the political minority in Congress a chance to bring legislation to the floor; the liberal press previously trashed the Republicans for not allowing the Democrats a voice. Well, not only did Pelosi and Reid break every one of their promises, they have presided over one of the worst politically manufactured debacles in history. The price of oil, food, and all other consumer goods has been driven up as a direct result of the Democrats making it illegal for the oil companies to drill, a

Exxon Profits Vindication: What The Media/Congress ISN'T Telling You
    2008-08-03 15:55:00
If too many people see these numbers, Glenn Beck's joking ideal of "pitchforks and torches" could become a reality. Or what would be more accurately described as, Congress and the media's worst nightmare coming to life. We've all heard the rants, over and over from Reid and Pelosi of how Big Oil is EVIL. We've all witnessed the "Record Profits!" banners splashed across the news screens. But it looks as if our "fair & balanced" media, (and the Dem's they've been supporting,) haven't quite been telling us everything we should be told when it comes to Exxon's "Record Profits."Author Mark J. Perry writing for the istockanalyst.com site, brings some much needed light to the issue that is certain groups' bias regarding oil companies. In his article entitled, Exxon's Record Capital and Exploration Spending published yesterday (Aug. 2nd, 2008) a very different story is told regarding dollar amounts.Oh, the "evil capitalists record profits" are still there to be sure. I was reading the news this morning and came upon an item about Filipino pool player Alex Pagulayan filing a P6 million libel suit against the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP). Alex Pagulayan, aka The Lion, filed the libel suit against the BSCP for accusing him of “sharking” and for later withdrawing his participation in 2007’s Guinness 9-Ball Tour. The 30-year-old 2004 World Pool Champion filed the complaint at the Pasig Regional Trial Court before 2nd Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Anunciacion Hipol. Alex Pagulayan was accompanied by his lawyer Alexis Abastillas-Suarez, fellow Filipino pool players Efren Bata Reyes, Francisco Django Bustamante, Roberto Gomez, and Joven Bustamante, and Perry Mariano, owner of Bugsy Promotions. Tax Foundation Testifies before Congress on Physical Presence for Business Taxation
    2008-06-23 23:00:00
In testimony submitted today to the Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Tax Foundation Tax Counsel Joseph Henchman outlined the importance of a consistent and predictable presence-based standard for business taxation."Today, with new technologies, even the smallest businesses can sell their products and services in all fifty states through the Internet and through the mail," Henchman wrote in his testimony. "If such sales can now expose these businesses to tax compliance and liability risks in states where they merely have customers, they will be less likely to expand their reach into those states."The Tax Foundation testimony made two primary points: (1) the physical presence standard limits destructive and likely unconstitutional state efforts to export tax burdens, efforts that stifle interstate commerce and harm economic growth; and (2) a uniform physical presence standard would decrease transaction costs for int

Mortgage Mess: Congress Should Do Nothing
    2008-03-30 22:41:49
After reading tons and tons of rhetoric and election year ideas about how to “fix” the mortgage and housing markets with a variety of government sponsored schemes, I have come to the strong conclusion that the federal government should in fact do absolutely nothing. While a number of folks are undoubtedly in a tough spot due [...]

Would Congress Repeal the "Real ID Act" And Forget the Lessons of the 9/11 Attacks?
    2008-03-27 12:01:02
There are governors who are not willing to comply with the Real ID Act and make it more difficult for terrorists to be able to receive driver's licenses. There are members of Congress who similarly oppose the Real ID Act; Democrat Senator Richard Durbin and Republican Senator Lamar Alexander are among those leading the charge against the Real ID Act. Senator Alexander wants to add a provision to the FY 2009 DHS appropriations bill delaying any enforcement of the bill unless and until the federal...(read more)

    Rating Congress
    2008-03-18 18:48:38
We hear many people in the news media criticize the politicians, we the people talk about how they are crooks, and the approval rating for congress is around twenty percent, but what will happen come election time? After being told what a lousy job our elected representatives are doing, already believing most politicians are corrupt, and highly disapproving of the job that Congress is doing, we will send most of them back to Washington. We will send back most of the same people who haven't solved any of our nation's problems for the last 25 to 30 years. The same ones who continue to drive up our national debt and future financial obligations. The same people who we will again give low approval ratings. Who is at fault here, the politicians or the people that keep electing them? Election time is when the true approval ratings come out. If we truly disapprove of the performance of our elected representatives, then there should be very few of them returning to Washington.Part o

ABUSE OF POWERTwo weeks ago my mother told me the Dems in Congress would seek to destroy Roger Clemens but let Barry Bonds get out of jail free, so to speak.  I told her she was wrong.  Unfortunately she is right. Report - Mobile World Congress Barcelona
    2008-02-18 11:23:00
First day back in the office since the whirlwind that is the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona - what a week! After setting up the stand over the weekend (which wasn’t without issues), we were ready to go first thing Monday. Some shows take a day or so to really heat up, but in Barcelona, once the opening whistle went at 9, we were welcoming visitors immediately. It was a long four days (our feet have almost recovered), but extremely interesting and ultimately very rewarding. It was the first time that we’ve got to demonstrate trakAxMobile to the industry and the response was overwhelming. There was plenty of buzz around Windows Mobile devices, with some really lovely new phones being shown at the show, but the one thing that people mentioned over and over again was that trakAxMobile really brought a “fun” element to the platform. We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to visit us - we met so many interesting people. The hard work starts now, fo

The AP says the source of this information is a person familiar with the affidavit who spoke on condition of anonymity because the document has not been made public yet. Maybe Rep. Bill Introduced in Congress to Affirm Physical Presence Rule
    2008-02-08 00:00:00
Yesterday, a bipartisan-sponsored Business Activity Tax Simplification Act of 2008 (BATSA) was introduced in Congress. The bill would clarify that state taxation of business income requires a physical presence within the taxing state. In recent years, many states have sought to tax businesses with no physical property or employees in the state. Because of this businesses increasingly face a complex, unpredictable, and unfriendly business environment, with the costs of litigation and accounting passed on to consumers. Congress has the power, under the Interstate Commerce Clause, to affirm the physical presence rule last upheld by the Supreme Court in the Quill case. States are already forbidden to tax personal property unless it is within the state, under Public Law 86-272. A statutory affirmation of the physical presence rule would simply extend this concept to intangible property and services. The initial sponsors of the bill are Congressmen Artur Davis (D-AL), Steve Chab

    Knock Knock. CONGRESS Calling.....
    2008-01-05 04:59:00
The United States Congress has been gracious enough to invite Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, among others, to testify in front of a Congressional hearing that will look into the Mitchell investigation. This is from the Boston Globe, and then I'll be back with a comment. Boy oh boy, you bet I will...."Now Roger Clemens gets a chance to tell his side of the story under oath. So does his good pal Andy Pettitte. And their former trainer, Brian McNamee, too. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, was asked Friday to testify before a congressional committee looking into the Mitchell Report on doping in baseball, nearly three years after the same panel brought sluggers Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro to Capitol Hill. Also invited to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Jan. 16 were Clemens' former New York Yankees teammates Pettitte and Chuck Knoblauch; McNamee, who has said he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone; and former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, whose allegations were central to the findings released last month by former Senate majority leader George Mitchell.Although no one had agreed to show up for the hearing as of late Friday afternoon, the committee's announcement listed Clemens and others under the heading, "Witnesses will include.""Roger is willing to answer questions, including those posed to him while under oath," said Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin. "We hope to determine shortly if schedules and other commitments can accommodate the committee on that date."Peter here. I'm sorry that Globe excerpt was so long, but I didn't find any of it that I wanted to delete. The words "witnesses will include" seem to me to be a firm invitation, not one that Clemens and Pettitte could duck out of. But his lawyer Rusty Hardin seemed in no way definite that his client WILL comply. We'll have to wait and see, I guess. I wish there would be some kind of punishment meted out if he or his lefty teammate fail t

IRS: About 3-4 million Refunds Will Likely Be Delayed Due to Congress Procrastination
    2007-12-27 00:00:00
Press release from the Internal Revenue Service today on the delay in refunds caused by Congress's procrastination on passing a patch for AMT:The Internal Revenue Service announced today that the upcoming tax season is expected to start on time for everyone except certain taxpayers potentially affected by late enactment of the Alternative Minimum Tax "patch."Following extensive work in recent weeks, the IRS expects to be able to begin processing returns for the vast majority of taxpayers in mid-January.  However, as many as 13.5 million taxpayers using five forms related to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) legislation will have to wait to file tax returns until the IRS completes the reprogramming of its systems for the new law.The IRS has targeted Feb. 11, as the potential starting date for taxpayers to begin submitting the five AMT-related returns affected by the legislation. The February date allows the IRS enough time to update and test its systems to
