    Connecticut Food Stamp Program
    2008-06-13 00:21:00
The Food Stamp Program helps people to buy and eat nutritious food. The modern Food Stamp program was set up in 1971. The Federal government pays most of the costs of the Food Stamp program. Each state operates a Food stamp program following rules from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Today, people access Food Stamp benefits by Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), a plastic swipe card that looks like a credit or debit card. If you are disabled and qualify for Food Stamps, you can designate anot

Tax Freedom Day Finally Arrives in Connecticut
    2008-05-07 23:00:00
Residents of the Constitution State celebrate Tax Freedom Day today, after a very long wait. Connecticut's Tax Freedom Day is the latest in the nation, and significantly later than the notional Tax Freedom Day of April 23. The earliest state Tax Freedom Day this year, back on March 29, was celebrated in Alaska. Residents of Connecticut are acutely aware of their high tax burden. We came across a blog post about the state's late Tax Freedom Day on a website called CtTaxed.com. Here's an excerpt:Ok, Connecticut you get to start working for your family and yourself today. Today is Tax Freedom Day, it's the day were you've finally worked enough to pay all your Federal, State and Local taxes. We in Connecticut have the honour of working longer than any other state in the Union to pay our fair share. We work till May 08th.How ironic that Tax Freedom Day and the end of the CT Legislature Session coincide.  Coincidence?  I think NOT!Other states where citizens wait unusually

    Fairfield, Connecticut Concerns.....
    2007-12-27 09:43:00
Jessica, a visitor and reader of my blog, is a Boston Red Sox fan. She lives in Fairfield county, which is in the southwest portion of my state, Connecticut. The cable companies have to play by the MLB rules, and YES, the Yankee network, is the only baseball-team related signal that they're allowed to carry. NO NESN! I'll repeat that. NO NESN!!!!!!! And that's a shame. I have other blog friends, one who STILL lives in that blacked-out county (Reb) and one who has recently moved to a NESN happiness zone (Jere). I'd like to give you the link that Jessica, just now, gave me. Sign the petition if you can, while thinking about all those loyal fans, members of our Red Sox Nation, who are shut out of the every game coverage of the best team in baseball. That's what NESN does, to our delight. JUST CLICK ON THE TITLE OF THIS POST, and you'll be directed to the petition site.Thank you Jessica, and don't forget to click on this post's title, my Constant Readers!! And thank you.

Connecticut Refuses to Reimburse Businesses For Ordered Tax Refunds
    2007-12-12 00:00:00
Retailers in 45 states have the responsibility to collect sales taxes on most purchases made to consumers. In Connecticut, for instance, a consumer buying a new car must pay sales tax on the purchase price to the dealer, who then forwards the money to the state. If a consumer returns the purchased item to the store, they are refunded the full cost, including the sales tax they paid. The retailer can then claim a refund of the sales tax money forwarded to the state, because the transaction has been cancelled. Connecticut law requires that if car dealers sell a "lemon" to consumers (a defective vehicle that cannot be repaired), the consumer can return it and be refunded the full purchase price, including sales tax paid plus costs incurred. DaimlerChrysler, an auto manufacturer, did so and then applied to the state for a refund of the tax money that had been forwarded. Connecticut refused, and this week, the state supreme court upheld the refusal in DaimlerChrysler v.

Connecticut--The One Of A Kind Red Sox-Yankee Battle State
    2007-11-19 05:04:00
Having lived in north central Connecticut for my entire life, I am well aware of the divided baseball loyalties of the state's residents. Walk the streets of downtown Hartford and you'll see people wearing Yankee apparel striding side by side with fans proudly wearing the Red Sox colors. And there's no mistaking the difference. But recently, the tide had begun to turn. This is from the Monday Boston Herald business section, for your enjoyment..."The number of Connecticut fans pledging allegiance to the Sox has risen to 37 percent from just 33 percent back in 2003. Conversely, the percentage of fans favoring the Yankees has dropped from 47 percent to 43 percent, polls conducted by Quinnipiac University show. And those numbers include heavily populated Fairfield County near New York City, where a quarter of Connecticut’s population lives. That county is true Yankee country, with the Sox barred by Major League Baseball from marketing there.Take out Fairfield, and the ratio of Red Sox

After doing a search on the subject of pool intake pumps, I saw a story about them going back to 1999 talking about how dangerous to children they can actually be and steps you can take to ensure children's safety when around these intake pumps. Parents and caretakers, please heed this rescue worker's advice!!! READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.

Temporary Order To Cease and Desist To American Home Mortgage Issued By Connecticut Banking Commissioner
    2007-08-04 01:51:15
Connecticut Banking Commissioner Howard Pitkin Issues Temporary Order to Cease and Desist to American Home Mortgage Connecticut State Banking Commissioner Howard F. Pitkin issued a Temporary Cease and Desist Order and Summary Suspension Against American Home Mortgage Corp. of New York (“American”) and two of its affiliates today. The action is the result of an on-going investigation of American for possible violations of Connecticut’s mortgage banking laws. Upon receipt of the order, American is required to cease and desist from failing to timely fund loans, failing to perform agreements with borrowers, failing to cooperate with the Department and from making material misstatements. American and its affiliates are also placed on notice that a maximum fine of $1,000,000 could be levied by the Department. “This order comes after the Department determined that American did not transfer loan proceeds for 38 loans scheduled to close in Connecticut,” Commissioner Pitkin stated.

    Connecticut Smokers Discuss Tax Policy
    2007-06-22 07:00:00
It doesn't always take an economist to point out the perils of bad tax policy. In response to the 49-cent per-pack cigarette tax increase included in Connecticut's proposed 2007-08 budget—about a 33% increase—the New Haven Register interviewed local smokers, who accurately described the problems caused by imposing such high taxes on cigarettes—problems that apply not only to tobacco taxes but to "sin taxes" in general. On the creation of black markets and increased crime:"I think cigarette smokers are an easy target," said Brian Lima of New Haven. "I think anything above $7 a pack is going to force a cigarette black market."A store owner who had been robbed for $500 worth of cigarettes, which would presumably be sold on the black market, said:"Now [the governor is] making cigarette stores more of a target for robberies. ... It's more lucrative for people to steal the cigarettes than to g

Gas Tax Holiday Debate in Connecticut
    2007-05-23 07:00:00
With gas prices again approaching record highs, many lawmakers at the state level are responding with the "do anything" mentality, which typically includes short-run gas tax holidays. The latest comes from the state of Connecticut, courtesy of NBC-30 Hartford.Republicans in the state House of Representatives are fuming after they were turned away by majority Democrats in their attempt to cut the state's gas tax this summer. Republicans want to suspend the state's 25-cent-per-gallon gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero Jr., a Republican from Norwalk, proposed an amendment, but Democratic leaders took the proposal off the House floor. Republicans are accusing Democrats of ignoring the needs of taxpayers. They say the state's $846 million budget surplus is more than large enough to cover the $120 million in revenue that would be lost from suspending the tax.Gas tax holidays are typically bad tax policy. The Bridges of Merit Parkway Route 15 Connecticut
    2007-02-15 05:31:00
A trip to New Canaan Connecticut on Tuesday featured a drive down the old Merit Parkway, a road which boasts an interesting series of the most finely crafted bridges you will find in one place. Every single one has architectural detail, every one is different, every one has a badge or engraving or emblem or plaque. Sometimes you must look closely to see it. To combat boredom and sleepiness, I went to the trouble of shooting a picture of most every one between exits 53 and 37. Click on the title above to see the whole series of bridge photos at Flickr.
