Religion & The Secular Conscience
2008-07-01 00:38:21
By Austin DaceyIn On Faith We often hear that some new scientific discovery has confirmed ancient religious teaching. It now appears that this hearkening back has gone full circle, and modern religion is coming around to ancient secular wisdom. At the recent "Seeds of Compassion" event in Seattle, the Dalai Lama spoke of three paths to compassion and moral development in children: the theistic path of the Abrahamic faiths, the non-theistic religious path of Buddhism, and the "secular, scientific" approach. Surrounded by brain researchers and empirical psychologists, he recommended this secular way as the most promising. For some time he has held that if any tenet of Buddhism contradicts contemporary science, science must trump.Meanwhile, during his first papal visit to the United States, Benedict XVI stressed the coequal roles of reason and faith in the religious life, and urged Catholics to translate their contributions to public life into a "public theology" accessible to all. When Conscience and Closet Collide
2008-06-12 02:45:45
By RUTH LA FERLA REVIEWING her wardrobe earlier this season, Elizabeth Marvin had a moment of reckoning. “How did this closet become so massively overstuffed?” she mused, disconcerted by the sight of so many Marni jackets, Chloé bags and Jimmy Choo shoes jostling for space on the racks. “From my green perspective, part of me feels [...]

No Shame, No Conscience
2008-03-30 23:01:00
I picked up Sunday's New York newspapers and to my utter chagrin I discovered not one, but two separate stories about two different men who were caught in two 9/11 scams. It's really disturbing to hear that this sort of thing goes on. Granted, in many tragic situations, like Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war, there are going to be those types who feel they can make money off of the heartache and disasters that many people have gone through and continue to go through. But hearing two separate stories about 9/11 scammers, it makes me wonder how people like these can sleep at night. One guy claimed to be a New York City cop who rescued thousands at the World Trade Center, was arrested in New Jersey on charges unrelated to the 9/11 disaster, that he looted from a woodworking company he founded. Fred Parisi claimed to be a cop but was not at the WTC the day of the disaster. He had been at the Police Academy in 2001 but never graduated to join the force. His impersonation of a 9/11 hero encour

Those Who Are Without a Conscience
2008-03-30 22:21:21
PSYCHOPATHS ARE VERY REAL“…"Psychopaths are social predators who charm, manipulate and ruthlessly plow their way through life, leaving a broad trail of broken hearts, shattered expectations without the slightest sense of guilt or regret. Their bewildered victims desperately ask, 'Who are these people?'"We often think of psychopaths as the disturbed criminals who capture headlines and crowd the nation's prisons. But not all psychopaths are killers. They are more likely to be men and women you know who move through life with supreme self-confidence -- but without a conscience….” Robert D. Hare, Ph. D. I’ve been reading a chilling ...

Pondering a computer with a conscience
2008-01-17 14:18:41
Do we “know anything about the makeup of an electron? Does it possess its own consciousness or does it not?” Eliezer J. Sternberg ponders questions like the one above posed by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Norman Mailer just before his recent death -- the possibility posed by some of a future when computers might attain consciousness and actually meld with humans. read more

When Conservatives had a Conscience
2007-11-12 00:18:07
When it wasn't just about grabbing and holding onto power, it was about principles. It was about honoring core beliefs. In 1960, Barry Goldwater took up in his hands the remnants of America's original and long lost tradition when he wrote:"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' 'interests', I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the v

How To Hear God - Hearing God Through Your Conscience
2007-09-02 22:09:24
How do you know whether the voice you associate with conscience is really God’s voice and not merely your own desires or the voice of imperfect families, friends or teachers? God usually speaks in a voice that is best described as a “still, small voice.” It’s a voice that everybody is capable of hearing. The [...]

The Conscience of a Hacker
2007-07-31 03:36:13
I read this last year somewhere in orkut.com and did publish it in my old blog (no more in use). Today I read it in Google Blogoscoped and so here it is for those who haven't read it till date. A MUST READ for anyone who knows English and has even very little knowledge about hackers. The Conscience of a Hacker, also called the Hacker Manifesto, was published in 1986. Loyd Blankenship aka The Mentor wrote it after his arrest and it got picked up by Phrack, and achieved fame since then. (Text republished here courtesy of Phrack.)Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "TeenagerArrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"... Damn kids. They're all alike. But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder whatmade him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world... Mine is a world that

In Thailand, the popular restaurant chain Cabbages and Condoms was founded by the kingdom’s leading philanthropist and former Minister of Health, Meechai Viravaidya, in an effort to make condoms as common - and as accepted - as cabbages. The food is consistently delicious (and ‘guaranteed not to cause pregnancy!’) and all proceeds from the restaurants are used to fund the social programs of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA), a non-profit organization founded in 1974 by Meechai himself.Choosing to eat at socially responsible restaurants such as these can make a big difference to the most vulnerable sectors of the local community. The Primacy of Conscience: Sola Conscientia?
2007-03-26 13:34:48
I think it’s an interesting time to live in America (although I might not choose it for my children). Catholics in the US seem to be going through a spiritual upheaval that has the majority of our fellow Catholics drifting toward a ritualized religion that resembles American Protestantism more than Roman Catholicism. The central argument continues to be the primacy of conscience. I often hear this notion that our conscience is our primary guide to right and wrong. And there is a strong belief that our conscience can never be wrong. Martin Luther ripped the Catholic Church in half on the basis of sola scriptura and sola fides, two classic misunderstandings of Scripture and Faith. The American Church is being torn asunder by sola conscientia or the primacy of conscience. And just like its predecessor’s misunderstanding of the Bible and Faith, sola conscientia misunderstands our conscience and overstates its abilities. Ultimately, there is little difference between asserting prima

Sliver of a Conscience
2006-02-15 16:37:00
I am compelled to write how I feel because I am just an insignificant person in this huge world. I have no money, nor power, I'm down to earth, traditional, and I don't waste time on politics. Politics and organized religion, which is almost the same thing, bring people stress, wrinkles, heartburn and disappointment. For me to get involved within the ranks of politics would be like joining some of the greediest and power hungry people on the planet. Notice how I said "some of the greediest." I didn’t say, "all of the greediest." Now whether I disagree with the political agenda's or not, the little person of my means cannot change how the majority feels, or I cannot change what they do in their spare time. But I can certainly be aware of what's happening in the world so I can protect myself, family, and loved ones, right? In today's society every end to a purpose is not without lusting after greed and power. I'm not debating about fighting for a cause. I believe people should "go after" what they believe in, non-violently, as long as it doesn't hurt another human being in any way! Funding abortion clinics, and passing out hate literature hurts other people, and that to me is not Christian thinking that leads to good Christian actions but those things that adulterate society even more. If an individual has even a sliver of a conscience, then they would know that sucking out babies from the womb is morally and ethically wrong. They would know that fighting in wars; deceiving young men into thinking they are fighting for their country, while murdering others is wrong. They would know, that passing ridiculous laws that compel others to do things against their spiritual conscience is wrong. Is there anything right about the political agendas that face the individual today? Or that face society in general? We can further state that most of the political and religious agendas of the world are morally, ethically and spiritually wrong. What does this mean? It brings mo
