| Respect the Constitution | | 2008-07-01 21:00:00 | | Oakland, California, looks to be the next city to back off of the "Safe Homes Initiative," a plan to send officers door to door to look for illegally possessed firearms. When the project was announced in Boston late last year, it was met with a storm of protests. A few months later, Washington, D.C., announced it would be conducting a similar program, and that city was greeted with protests as well. Now it's Oakland's turn to hear from angry citizens, and like Boston and D.C., Oakland is...(read more) | | By: An American Warning | | |

| | | The Second Amendment to the American Constitution | | 2008-03-16 12:48:00 | | By Carlos Benito CamachoThe Supreme Court of the United States will consider the meaning of the second amendment to the American Constitution. Written more than 200 years ago, the amendment says, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."The second amendment came in a package of ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights, which states or deals with the American citizens individual rights, and it was added to the American Constitution in 1791. Since it was a time when there was no institutionalized federal army or national guard yet, with its own logistic and armory, every citizen who joined the state militia had to carry with him his own private gun, musket at that time. By the end of the18th century America was still a wild land whose white population was subject to be attacked by one of the numerous Indian tribes, or by English, French, or Spanish marauders.

| | | | Taliban Constitution | | 2007-09-29 21:22:00 | | A Taliban constitution for Afghanistan made public recently would ban "un-Islamic thought" and require women to be fully covered. The 23-page shadow constitution, which would allow education for women only within the limits of Sharia, has been offered as an alternative to the government of President Hamid Karzai, Britain’s Telegraph reported. The newspaper said the Constitution of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, written in Pashto and Dari languages, says, “Every Afghan has the right to express his feelings through his views, writings or through other means in accordance with the law,” but also warns violators of Islamic thought “will be punished according to Sharia.”"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wishes good working relations with all the neighboring countries and specially those who have supported the Afghan nation during jihad," the document says. | | Possible applications of a Virtual Long Island Constitution | | 2007-09-04 15:12:00 | | So how do we solve our housing issues? If we agree with the premise (subject to the dynamic meta-analyses we've been preaching for the past 100 or so posts) that there is a need for more housing to keep our young workers and families here on Long Island (and to attract more professionals of all types), then let us take a simple, common sense approach to the issue.Let's also agree that we be able to, with reasonable certainty, analyze and come to a defensible position on the who, what, where, how much, time frame (solves issue for 10 years, 20 years, 50 or more years?) and all the various environmental and quality of life concerns of the issue (I know it sounds like a lot, but it is reasonably simple to do accurate projections with the right modeling software).Let's also agree that this issue is a shared issue amongst all Long Islanders. Then we can agree that a Long Island Constitution (virtual or otherwise) could, as one of its outcomes, design a plan where all political subdivisions ag | | By: Long Island Idea Factory | | |
| | Creating a "Virtual" Long Island Constitution: Part Three | | 2007-08-17 17:03:00 | | A simple graphic to illustrate the new Long Island "triad."Unlike a traditional WIKI (Wikipedia for example) our processes can not be anonymous if they are to be effective. If you can't put your name to something and be willing to discuss, explain or debate your position, then you probably don't feel strongly enough about the process to participate.More in Part Four. | | By: Long Island Idea Factory | | |
| | Creating a "Virtual" Long Island Constitution: Part Two | | 2007-08-16 16:36:00 | | We should view the "Virtual" Long Island Constitution as a hybrid creation. Part legal, part ethical, part technical: organic, dynamic, reality based. How do we start? We could, of course utilize existing "constitution" models out there. I would prefer to create from the ground up (although this one, while not directly on point, isn't too bad).Let's start with some sort of Long Island Constitution "WIKI" or other easy to use collaborative model. This, I think, will generate the most diverse and creative beginning.Remember this is a collaborative effort. It will encourage us to think out of our "own silos" and to concentrate on "global" Long Island issues and how our piece of the puzzle fits into the overall scheme. | | Creating a "Virtual" Long Island Constitution: Part One | | 2007-08-14 16:14:00 | | Great ideas, for the most part, transcend the forces which try to hold them back. It may take awhile, but the ideas generally prevail.Great ideas need, however a structure which allows them to be heard, develop and, ultimately, become reality. This is the genius of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. It allows for ideas not contemplated at the time of the creation and modification of those documents to eventually find a voice and have the opportunity to succeed. Long Island requires its own type of constitution; a "Virtual Long Island Constitution."What do we mean by a "Virtual Long Island Constitution?" If we view the nature of the universe as one of constant change ("Change alone is eternal, perpetual, immortal." Arthur Schopenhauer) and with apologies to the "strict constructionists" out there, then we must be prepared for change and have instruments which allow us to negotiate change as simply as possible. Luckily for us we live in an era in which great chan | | By: Long Island Idea Factory | | |

| | Reviving the Constitution in Exile | | 2007-06-09 00:04:00 | | Throughout history, humans have been unable to survive without fire. They used it to stay warm from the elements, for food preparation, as well as for social gatherings. However, even though fire is essential, it is also extremely dangerous. As a result, humans decided to put fire in a special place: they called it a fireplace. The fireplace would ensure that the fire could be controlled, as well as to prevent the fire from harming anyone. Whenever fire stayed inside the fireplace, it was considered a good fire. Whenever fire went outside the fireplace, it needed to be extinguished before it burnt down the entire house.Like fire, our Founding Fathers knew they could not survive without Government. Government would ensure protection of their liberties and inalienable rights. They knew that the absence of Government meant anarchy and chaos. However, they also knew from history that Government was extremely dangerous. As a result, our Founding Fathers decided to put Government in a specia | | By: Copious Dissent - Your Daily Dose of Liberty | | |
| | Extradition Is Allowed Under the Russian Constitution | | 2007-05-29 01:56:00 | | The next chapter in the best-selling murder story of Alexander Litvinenko continues, with British police accusing Andrei Lugovoi of his murder. The plot thickens…Russian officials have refused to extradite Lugovi, claiming that the Russian constitution does not allow for extraditions. According to Bucknell University, Article 63 of the Russian Constitution states:The extradition of persons persecuted for their political views or any actions (or inaction), which are not qualified as criminal by the law of the Russian Federation, to other states shall not be allowed in the Russian Federation. Murder, of course, is illegal in the Russian Federation.UPDATE: Robert Amsterdam has a great post on the subject. | | By: Thoughts on the World | | |
