As Costs Rise, Consumer Staples and Utilities Still Better than S&P
    2008-07-04 10:58:00
Consumer staples and utilities have been the stocks to buy in previous market downturns. Since they make or provide products we use daily (food, water, personal care, electricity, heat), their sales are not as correlated with economic cycles as, say, those of car manufacturers.Six months ago, I looked at how some non-cyclical stocks--Altria (MO), Anheuser Busch (BUD), Coca Cola (KO), Consolidated Edison (ED), Diageo (DEO), General Mills (GIS), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Kellog (K), Kraft (KFT), Pepsico (PEP), Proctor & Gamble (PG), and Reynold's American (RAI)--performed during recent market slumps and since the beginning of the decade. I concluded that owning all these stocks, especially over the almost eight year period, was much better than owning the S&P 500, even excluding dividends.Year to date all but two of the above stocks (BUD and General Mills) are down. (If not for InBev's buyout offer, BUD would probably be in negative territory as well.)The reasons for most of t

    2008-07-02 21:42:00
WASHINGTON - ALMOST half a million US consumers filed for bankruptcy protection in the first half of 2008 - 30 per cent more than the same time last year - as they struggled against a weak economy, steep decline in home values and rising debt, the American Bankruptcy Institute said on Wednesday. Filings rose to 494,610 between Jan 1 and June 30 from 380,544 in the first six months of 2007, ABI said in a statement. In June, there were 82,770 bankruptcy filings, a 20.7 per cent increase from a year-ago, the nonpartisan group said in a statement. Sequentially, June filings were down 9.3 per cent from 91,214 filings in May. Chapter 13 filings in June made up 32.6 per cent of all consumer bankruptcies, the ABI said, slightly higher than May. Chapter 13 allows consumers to keep their property while budgeting future income to pay off debt, such as money owed to credit card companies. Chapter 7 lets individuals or businesses liquidate their assets to pay off creditors. Filings under Chapter 11

Oh snap! Consumer Reports rips Aveo a new one
    2008-06-19 07:51:00
Consumer Reports isn't known for completely trashing cars in its reviews. In fact, the publication is more often criticized for going too easy on them and finding something to like in everything that passes through the CR garage. But dang if they didn't just tear apart the 2008 Chevy Aveo sedan, going so far as to say its big-bro Cobalt is an all-around better car and better deal for bargain shoppers. They cite Cobalt's comparable fuel economy, better handling, quieter more refined interior and, after discounts, better price. The magazine calls the Aveo a "miserable little car" and, since they couldn't find the name "Aveo" anywhere in the car's interior, thinks GM might think so, too. CR says it readers certainly thought the Aveo was miserable, rating the hatchback and sedan variants at the very bottom of their classes.Worse than the Cobalt? Ouch. We tested the 2007 model and gave it a resounding score of "eh." Any Aveo owners out there who want to defend there little Korean cars' repu

Plastic Surgery Consumer Alert – Cool Cosmetic Surgery Quiz:
    2008-05-20 03:23:00
When two renowned cosmetic surgery boards unite to generate consumer awareness, the result is a fab site called Beauty for Life. A joint effort of the ASPS and the ASAPS, this portal aims to get the consumer know better about any cosmetic surgery decision he has to make. The site prickled my curiosity and I popped over for a dekko. What I seen left me suitably impressed. I had to create an account first and enter in details like age, height, weight, skin tone and gender. My lifestyle was then analyzed which included smoking habits, diets, exercise, sun exposure, etc. In the next step, just like how a good plastic surgery consultant would have done, they tried to isolate my motivation for a surgery and the part/parts of the body I wanted to improve. The comfort level indicator was a nice touch too and checked whether I would be alright with a surgery or would rather prefer a minimally invasive procedure. The part/parts of the body that need work were then further analyzed to crea

    Furniture Rentals Consumer Protection And
    2008-05-09 01:52:32
Furniture rentals, furniture leasing, and equipment rental are practical choices for furnishing seasonal or temporary homes. However, not every leasing company gives consumers the best rates and deals. Some companies even give vague answers or answer inquiries incompletely. Hence, most consumers are misinformed about their leasing options and their rights on leasing deals. They often end up surprised about the high prices when their leasing bill arrives. They don't have any choice but to pay because they signed the deal. But avoiding these furniture rentals, furniture leasing, and equipment rental flubs are easy with a dose of common sense. Common sense, here, means making informed and practical choices before signing leasing contracts. Doing a bit of research about furniture rentals, furniture leasing, and equipment rental rates and companies may save consumers from legal and financial problems later. Few bother with it, but there is a law designed to protect consumers' rights from le

    Consumer Spending vs. Consumer Buying
    2008-04-17 19:15:36
I was listening to a report on consumer spending this week that left me unsure about the statistic. After reporting that consumer spending was up a little bit last month, the reporter went right into the fact that prices are also up. There wasn't much detail given, and I was left wondering if consumer spending was up because things cost more or if it was because people were buying more things. With some of the sharp increases in prices we have been seeing, it may be possible that we could buy less and actually spend more. Is consumer spending based on the dollar amount spent or the quantity of product bought? This seems like another economic statistic that could be misleading. I'm no economic expert, but I think there is a big difference between how much we are spending and how much we are buying. If we are spending more and buying less, this would be a bad sign for our economy. Like most economic statistics, I think we need a little more information on this one.

The Consumer Price Index, commonly known by its abbreviation, CPI, is compiled and published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), using price data obtained from an elaborate survey of 25,000 retail outlets and quantity data generated by the Consumer Expenditures Survey. The CPI is unquestionably one of the most widely recognized macroeconomic price indexes, running second only to the Dow Jones Averages in the price index popularity contest. It is used not only as an indicator of the price level and inflation, but also to convert nominal economic indicators to real terms and to adjust wage and income payments (such as Social Security) for inflation.General EffectConsumer Price Index is one of the most important inflation indicators, which provides apparent signs of recent inflation rates. The Saab 9-3 and the Volvo C70 also scored within the ‘very good’ range.” Consumer Reports itself comments, “Folding hard tops are the latest trend in convertibles.” Five of the seven cars tested featured hard tops. “But noise and weather isolation have more to do with individual vehicle design than whether the top is hard or soft, we found in our tests. The folding hard tops of the Pontiac and Chrysler, for example, tended to squeak, rattle, or generate more wind noise than some fabric tops did.” The Car Connection adds, “The Saab [9-3] and Pontiac [G6] convertibles were not recommended overall,

In macroeconomic terms, it is the debt which is used to fund consumption rather than investment.General EffectConsumer Credit has a slightly effect on the foreign currencies market as long as increasing this indicator means more liquidity available with consumers which allows them to spend more and more leading to high demand on goods and services; then that might expose raising factories and companies production capacity. At the end such index pushes the economic growth ahead with strengthening the local currency.About Consumer credit figurer impact at stock exchange is also supposed to be slight, regarding any improvement on goods and service

    2008-03-25 08:45:58
Previous: 75.0Forecast: 73.5DefinitionA measure of consumer attitudes, preferences, and expectations concerning the state of the economy and business cycle conditions that is compiled each month by The Conference Board. The Conference Board is also responsible for compiling the leading, coincident, and lagging economic indicators. The Consumer Confidence Index is one of two primary measures of consumer attitudes. Italian Consumer Optimism Tumbles to Lowest in Four Years
    2008-03-22 00:16:00
Italian consumer confidence fell to the lowest in almost four years in March as rising prices and slowing economic growth sapped optimism in Europe's fourth- biggest economy. The Rome-based Isae Institute's index, based on a survey of 2,000 families, fell to 99 from a revised 102.8 last month. The reading was lower than the median forecast of 102.4 by 17 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. Today's reading is the lowest since May 2004.Italians have been cutting back on their spending, which makes up two-thirds of the $2 trillion economy, as a surge in the cost of food and transportation curbs disposable income. ISAE predicts the Italian economy will grow as little as 0.5 percent this year, the slowest pace since 2003. Oil prices above $100 a barrel have driven the Italian inflation rate to 3.1 percent, the highest in 11 years, and saddled households with higher energy bills. Italian retail sales dropped in February for a 12th consecutive month, the Bloomberg purchasing managers index

Sharp drop in US consumer morale
    2008-02-27 22:57:00
Confidence among US consumers fell to a five-year low in February, a closely watched survey has indicated, underlining recession fears. The Conference Board said its index, which measures how consumers feel about the economy, fell to 75.0 in February from 87.3 in January. It was the biggest monthly drop in the index since the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. It was also the lowest reading since just before the US went to war in Iraq. "The levels we are at now are suggestive of a recession," said Chris Rupkey, senior financial economist at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in New York. "It's just not the levels, it's the precipitous drop from January that's most worrying." The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates twice in January in an attempt to boost both consumer sentiment and the wider economy. The US economy is reeling from a collapse in the housing market and related turmoil in financial markets.

Angry Baseball Fan Sues Yankees Because Of PEDs, Claiming Consumer Fraud!
    2008-01-14 05:03:00
Good Monday morning. I came across a story from the website of the Press Association. Here is a bit of it, and I'll be back after you check it out..."A long-time baseball fan is suing the New York Yankees over some players' reported use of performance-enhancing drugs, saying he wants repayment for 221 US dollars (£112) in tickets and a public response from his once-beloved team."I look at it almost as consumer fraud," said Matthew Mitchell, 30, a Brooklyn resident who said he went to his first game at Yankee Stadium in 1984. "If I'm going to watch a baseball game, then I expect it to be the real thing."The Yankees declined to comment."Peter here, and if the Yankees DID have a comment, I have no idea what it would be! But it will cost him far more than the $212.00 in legal fees if he goes through with the proceedings, but that is his legal right. I double checked to make sure this was a real news story and not a goof, and I found a report from ABC news that verifies it. I have linked that report...all you have to do is click on the title of this post. I have to say it's a "must read."Winter Storm Christopher turned into a moist monster rather than a heavy snow-dumper. It's still snowing, but with the temperature hovering around the freezing mark, the snow is moist and water-laden. Four inches of this slick precipitation would equal about ten inches of the fluffy dry kind of flakes. The white stuff is sticking to every branch and power line, and when it starts getting light, it should be a beautiful sight. But the power has already gone off twice, once when I was in the shower. Needless to say, it went completely BLACK. But the interruptions were only a minute or so each, and I hope I can get this post up before it happens again, if it does. I hope it won't...there's absolutely NOTHING to do without power except for cracking open that book that I'm halfway through...by flashlight. So I have my fingers crossed. Congrats go out to the Giants and the Chargers, b
