| MadWorld for the Wii: Here Comes Controversy | | 2008-08-15 20:29:00 | | The upcoming Sega beat 'em up, MadWorld, is already generating plenty of controversy. It's still at least six months away from an official release, but Britain's Daily Mail has already started drumming up public hysteria over the game's "unsavoury" themes.MadWorld is a third-person beat 'em up for the Wii. It's also, possibly, one of those most violent games ever created. In fact, it's so violent that the Japanese developer, Platinum Games, openly admits that it doesn't think the game will get a release in Japan. Instead, they're aiming for the Western market - with its higher appreciation for games with blood, guts and gore. Not much is known about the game apart from a couple of trailers, which shows some pretty ridiculous and horrifying images. For instance, you can slice people up with a chainsaw, rip out their hearts, and use a street sign to impale their foreheads. But the most striking feature of the game is the colour scheme. Much like the film Sin City, everything is black and w... | | By: Killscreen Poetry | | |

| This is a controversy? | | 2008-08-06 05:00:07 | | This is what it has come to for your New York Giants.
About the most controversial thing happening around the DEFENDING SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS is that kicker Lawrence Tynes doesn't like the practice field at UAlbany because the grass is too nice.
Yep, complaints about the grass being TOO NICE is about as close to making waves as anything comes around the Giants these days.
What has happened here? These are not the Giants I have spent my life agonizing over.
No one is ripping the coach. In fact, everyone seems to be in love with formerly Scrooge-like coach Tom Coughlin.
No one is complaining about their role on the team.
No one is wondering if the Giants have a professional quarterback capable of leading the team to great things.
No one is whining about their contract, though we know Plaxico Burress still wants to get paid.
What has happened to our New York Giants? All this tranquility is killing me.
The best the Giants can do is Tynes whining that the UAlbany grass is too nice to kick on... | | By: Big Blue View | | |

| Atheist Nexus Controversy? | | 2008-08-03 03:00:50 | | I recently read a few blog posts regarding Atheist Nexus, a social site on the Ning platform for atheists. Apparently, not everybody agrees with some of the decisions made by the operators of this group. Sound familiar? It's nice to know that some people have their noses up everybody's asses and not just ours...but I digress. We set up a group there months ago which hasn't been utilized since the main site serves a similar function, but if you are into that format, please feel free to register at rationalresponders.ning.com. | Flintoff strikes as Vaughan 'catch' controversy flares | | 2008-07-20 17:09:00 | |
Author: Cricky
Posted: Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:09 pm
Andrew Flintoff marked his return to Test cricket by helping get rid of two key South African batsmen on a controversial day when 13 wickets fell here at Headingley on Friday.
South Africa closed the opening day of the second Test on 101 for three, a deficit of 102, after they had bowled England out for 203.
But the tourists may have ended the day in a worse position but for a flashpoint involving Flintoff.
Hashim Amla, who made a century in the drawn first Test at Lord's and ended the day here on 18 not out, chipped a Flintoff delivery towards England captain Michael Vaughan, who dived forward at mid-off and claimed a low catch.
Amla started to walk and was nearly off the field when he was told to remain in the middle by 12th man Andre Nel and Proteas coach Mickey Arthur.

| Picture This: Cover Controversy | | 2008-07-14 11:20:23 | | The new cover of The New Yorker has stirred a little controversy over the past few days. Artist Barry Blitt defended the cover, saying, "I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic in certain sectors is preposterous. It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is." The Obama campaign suggested the cover was offensive, noting, "The New Yorker may think that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create, but most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree." What do you think?

| There Is No Goalie Controversy | | 2008-04-28 13:05:48 | | There is no controversy. Jose Theodore has gone 28-36 (saves-shots) against Detroit. Peter Budaj has gone 39-40. Peter Budaj is clearly the better goalie at this moment and should start game 3, without a doubt. And that is exactly why Coach Quenneville will do the opposite: Quenneville said Jose Theodore will start Game 3 for Colorado. He has allowed eight goals on 36 shots. Peter Budaj has stopped 39-of-40 shots. But Theodore deserves another start, Quenneville said. "He's our guy, and he had a good stretch for us. I think these extra couple days of rest are going to do wonders for him," Quenneville said. Lest anyone forget, Coach Q is not a very good coach, and is most certainly the wrong one for the Colorado Avalanche. Just in case anyone had convinced themselves that maybe he was doing an okay job, shame on you. There is a fine line between principled consistency and flat-out, floor-licking insanity. | The Analog To Digital TV Change Controversy | | 2008-04-18 15:43:00 | | By now we have all been subjected ad nauseum to the controversy surrounding the change over. If you have had an opportunity to see broadcast digital quality then you will have no questions as to a major reason for the change over. Over the air broadcast quality is terrific with digital. The down side is if you have a weak signal you get nothing. With a weak analog signal you could watch the fuzzy picture until your eyeballs fragged out. Many a Steelers game I stood gently moving the rabbit ears to try and get any picture. Of course the freeing up of air wave space is also a big factor. Digital will allow a lot more information in a much small volume of space.Regardless of why, how does it affect you and me. I have way too many TVs, especially considering how little TV I watch. Now Comcast says they are going to continue their analog signal so I should be ok. If your cable company decides to cash in on converter boxes, then you could be hit for $60.00 for each and every TV you want to c... | | By: Money Saving Tech Tips and Philosophic Musings | | |

| Northern Trust Open: The Tiger Controversy | | 2008-02-13 21:35:32 | | I found this interesting little article this morning - I recommend you read the whole thing vis the link.Eight of the top 10 players in the World Ranking will play in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club this week, the only exceptions being No. 4 Ernie Els and No. 1 Tiger Woods. Despite winning here in 1999, Els has no particular connection to Southern California. But Woods is a SoCal native, and he made his first start on the PGA Tour here, missing the cut (72-75) as a 16-year-old in 1992. "He couldn't afford the plane ticket," Charles Howell III joked. "He's only about the majors," Stuart Appleby said. "He uses regular tournaments to prepare for majors, whereas most of us use everything to prepare for everything. Augusta's a long way away."Do regular tournaments not count in Tiger's world? It sure seems like they do. Woods gets sufficiently revved up to throw upper-cuts in places like Akron, Boston, Chicago, Dublin (Ohio) — you could go right down the alphabet. So his av... | | By: The Golf Blog | | |

| Continuing mystery and controversy | | 2007-12-07 01:33:35 | | There is something of potential importance within the UFO mystery, and it is two-fold, according to Don Berliner, a longtime UFO investigator and an independent aviation/science writer. He also is Chairman of the Fund for UFO Research, located in Alexandria, Virginia.First of all, there are the detailed descriptions from veteran airline and military pilots of objects seen at close range in broad daylight."These were said to have been solid, metallic-looking objects with sharp edges and simple geometric shapes that were completely unlike any known aero-spacecraft, and displayed performance--extreme speed within the atmosphere, violent maneuvers and spectacular acceleration--that was even farther from the norm," Berliner told SPACE.com.Secondly, there is the "excessive zeal" shown by the U.S. Air Force when claiming to have solved the UFO mystery, Berliner suggested. "Statistics were manipulated, intelligent adult witnesses were treated like naive children, explanations were fabricated, scientific theories were twisted to fit, information known to have been false was released to Congress and the public, and portions of witnesses' testimony were ignored when they clashed with prepared explanations."All of these claims, Berliner added, can be supported with quotes from Air Force documents, letters, reports and public statements.Still, there are many UFO sightings that deserve to be chalked up to more down-to-Earth explanation, Berliner said."Most reasonable persons, no matter what their conclusions, agree that the great majority of UFO reports are easily explained as misidentified conventional phenomena. It is the remaining five to ten percent that constitute the continuing mystery and controversy," he concluded.... | | By: astronomy-UFO | | |

| Coaches Poll Controversy | | 2007-12-06 21:22:00 | | The current BCS system uses the coaches poll as 1/3 of the final BCS score. The final regular season coaches poll is always controversial as coaches in the title mix may be apt to bump their team up and competitors down. Geoff Ogilvy has sighted family reasons and early reports suggest Adam Scott just didn't want to play this week.Even Robert Allenby has weighed into the debate suggesting that if the top Aussie players don't come back to the tour then the Australian tour will die. | NFL, NBA, MLB = Controversy | | 2007-07-24 23:33:23 | | The three major sports leagues are all being rattled at the same time by major scandals.
NFL: superstar Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick faces federal charges for organizing an interstate dog-fighting ring. Very ugly. So far Vick has been dismissed from the start of training camp and it looks like one of the league’s former bright stars could be at the end of his tenure as a primetime persona.
NBA: a referee has been busted for “engineering” outcomes in key basketball games in order to make money for himself and general mob thugs paying his way. The integrity of the game is significantly called into question.
MLB: admitted steroid user Barry Bonds hones in on one of the most respected records in all of sports, the all-time career home run record of 755 currently held by Hank Aaron.

| Controversy at Petco | | 2007-06-24 19:05:00 | | It was a tough night for the Red Sox at Petco last night, as Tim Wakefield pitched four solid innings before the Padres tagged him for six runs, and the Padres went on to win, 6-1, before a spirited crowd of Red Sox and Padres fans last night. There was plenty of controversy, as it appeared to me sitting in the stands (I was sitting in the top deck behind third base) that Manny Ramirez made a diving catch, but the umps got together and reversed it, and it led to a San Diego run. The next inning was more controversial, as Josh bard hit a ball that appeared to be a home run but was called foul. Again, the umps got together and reversed it, giving the Padres a 5-0 lead. I turned to my friend Ken and said, "I hope the umps got both the calls right."We saw the replays later, and they did indeed get it right. I like the fact that umps now get together to get close calls like this right. But once again, I believe that the umpiring is getting worse, despite the umps now getting together to talk... | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

| Pierzinski once again surrounded by controversy | | 2007-05-29 16:47:16 | | We should have known. The catcher who was once loved by Twins fans once again found himself surrounded by controversy during todays game against the Twins. Should we be surprised? A.J. is doing the same things that we used to love about him. Only now the fans generally boo him when he comes to the plate. I have heard the term, “Barry being Barry” used many times but I think that we should file todays incident in the “AJ being AJ” column. During the game today, the White Sox briefly took the lead from the Twins and Santana. AJ hit what would be a inning-ending double play (6-4-3). Once he passed first he turned and ran towards the dugout. At this point he ran right by AL MVP Justin Morneau. He appeared to step on Morneau’s foot. This in turn make Morneau’s usually stoic face….even more stoic. He glared at AJ all the way to the dugout. The controversy would somehow get worse though when first base umpire, Greg Gibson, motioned to the Twins ... | | By: TheGoldSeat.com | | |

| Local Media "Pimp" Edwards; Controversy to Follow? | | 2007-05-14 19:18:42 | | QB Trent Edwards is getting a lot of press these days. With Day Three of the rookie mini-camp set for today, you would think that our two most popular draft picks - RB Marshawn Lynch and LB Paul Posluszny - would be the point of emphasis of local media. Lynch and Poz certainly were watched closely through the first two practices; perhaps no player is receiving more attention this weekend, however, than third-round quarterback Trent Edwards. The Stanford alum is receiving all of the "first-team" reps in this veteran-less camp, and thus far he has looked very good. He is a big, mobile, strong-armed kid with good accuracy and loads of potential. This has members of the Buffalo media intrigued about his potential with this team. Let me first point out that there is a pattern as to how quarterback controversies gain steam. There is a quarterback on a team whom not everybody is comfortable with; a team brings in another guy with a little talent; the media catches... | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |

| The Controversy Around Being A Man | | 2007-04-16 19:19:47 | | There was quite a bit of controversy around my recent post, What Women Want In A Man. Some people took offense, some sided with my ideas, and some remained neutral. I believe that I did not do justice to some of my ideas when transferring them from my head to my writing. I apologize and take responsibility for the miscommunication, since it is my job as a writer to communicate effectively. I can see how some of the things I said sounded chauvinistic (i did not intend to hurt or single out a group of people), so I’m going to readdress and clarify them.
Ok, so here’s the shocker, what women want is…. a man. If that didn’t click, allow me to explain. In the hunter-gatherer days, men ruled with an iron fist. There was no question about who was the leader of the tribe, and there was no question about the roles in those societies. Am I being sexist? Do I believe that women shouldn’t be CEOs of huge corporations or President’s of great nations? Keep reading.

| Mutation and adaptation: the directed mutation controversy in evolutionary perspective | | 2006-03-12 13:02:26 | | [Lenski & Sniegowski, Annual Review of Systematics, Nov '95]Abstract:A central tenet of evolutionary theory is that mutation is random with respect to its adaptive consequences for individual organisms; that is, the production of variation precedes and does not cause adaptation. Several recent experimental reports have challenged this tenet by suggesting that bacteria (and yeast) ''may have mechanisms for choosing which mutations will occur'' (6, p. 142). The phenomenon of nonrandom mutation claimed in these experiments was initially called ''directed mutation'' but has undergone several name changes during its brief and controversial history. The directed mutation hypothesis has not fared well; many examples of apparently directed mutation have been rejected in favor of more conventional explanations, and several reviews questioning the validity of directed mutation have appeared (53, 54, 59-61, 79, 80). Nonetheless, directed mutation has recently been reincarnated under the confusing label ''adaptive mutation'' (5, 23, 24, 27, 35, 74). Here we discuss the many experimental and conceptual problems with directed/adaptive mutation, and we argue that the most plausible molecular models proposed to explain ''adaptive mutation'' are entirely consistent with the modern Darwinian concept of adaptation by natural selection on randomly occurring variation. In the concluding section of the paper, we discuss the importance of an informed evolutionary approach in the study of the potential adaptive significance of mutational phenomena. Knowledge of the molecular bases of mutation is increasing rapidly, but rigorous evolutionary understanding lags behind. We note that ascribing adaptive significance to mutational phenomena (for example, ''adaptive mutation'') is beset with some of the same difficulties as ascribing adaptive significance to features of whole organisms (29). We consider some examples of mutational phenomena along with possible adaptive and non... | | By: Evolution Research - Main Blog | | |
