Better Know a Jaguars Coach: Special Teams Coordinator Joe DeCamillis
    2008-05-22 13:00:25
Although regularly overlooked by the common fan, special teams consistently has been a hallmark of quality football teams, and can literally make or break a game. DeCamillis has been nothing short of a godsend for the Jags. He started his career at Denver, and moved to coach special teams under his now father-in-law Dan Reeves in NY. Afterwards, he jumped to Atlanta where he presided over a special teams monster for the better part of a decade. This man can flat out coach, and he’s got a reputation for doing so.  So back to the special teams part. First, when I did a big feature a few years ago on coverage and return units, breaking down all the aspects of special teams that go overlooked, even I was overwhelmed at how much there was to know. And of the six or seven coordinators I talked to, the two who impressed me the most were Harbaugh and Joe DeCamillis, who is now with the Jaguars. Both guys sounded like head coaches. They know ho

Queer youth coordinator weighs in on "psychopathic army killers"
    2008-03-29 08:58:13
yes...thank you liz...and michaelann for your remarks. i, too, feel a sense of sadness and outrage at your remarks, david. i spend many hours each week with queer youth....queer youth from springfield (springfield, documented as a poor city according to the last census). queer youth who are trying to make it in springfield public schools (where in 2003 and 2004 only 33% of entering freshmen graduated...so, what of the 67% who didn't make it?). queer youth who are mainly from poor families, and who aren't seeing a whole lot of choices out there for their futures. queer youth of color, who are prime targets for the military recruiters, who are promising them everything 'and the kitchen sink' to sign up (and, are told by recruiters not to worry about "Don' Ask, Don't Tell" ...because recruiters are pulling out all stops). i can tell you, that these young people are not psychopaths or murders. they are our brothers/sisters, neighbors, they are sensitive and reflective and insightf

Report: Bills to name Turk Schonert Offensive Coordinator
    2008-01-16 08:23:26
Update [2008-1-16 11:29:16 by Brian Galliford]: The official site has a fantastic interview with Schonert up; it's definitely worth your while to read through that in its entirety. The two quotes that you really, really need to read, however, I'll include here: "It's not an overhaul," Schonert said. "I'm a firm believer in keeping some of the terminology. They've been in the system terminology-wise for two years. With protections and the run game that's what I'd like to keep the same. Hopefully we can stay as close to what we had before so they don't have to learn brand new terminology in every phase of the game." "The pass game conceptually I think there's going to be quite a few changes," he said. "Conceptually there are things I liked that we didn't get done last year and I'm going to implement those into the system." The Buffalo News is reporting that the Bills are set to promote quarterbacks coach Turk Schonert to the post of offensive coordinator. Schonert, who has never held a coordinator position at the NFL level, will replace Steve Fairchild, who after authoring the least productive offensive season in team history left to become head football coach at Colorado State University. As part of the promotion process, former Bills quarterback Alex Van Pelt - who has spent the last two seasons as offensive quality control coach - will assume the quarterbacks coach role vacated by Schonert. Pressure's On Buffalo's offense, as mentioned, was historically bad in 2007. Flip-flopping quarterbacks and awful play-calling were at the crux of an attack that produced a franchise-low 20 touchdowns and often left a bottom-feeding defense stranded - even after good defensive efforts. With the Bills likely to hand their starting quarterback slot to second-year man Trent Edwards, the feeling is that head coach Dick Jauron made this promotion based on the fact that similar offensive terminology - not scheming - will help Edwards continue to develop as he en

Osama bin Laden’s security coordinator captured in Pakistan
    2008-01-13 04:21:00
A senior al Qaeda commander has been reported to have been captured in the Pakistani city of Lahore, according to a Pakistani newspaper. Dr. Amin al Haq, the security coordinator of Osama bin Laden’s Black Guard, “was apprehended from Lahore couple of days back,” The Nation reported, citing “credible Afghan sources.” Al Haq is said to be “under interrogation” at an undisclosed location.Al Haq has a long pedigree with both the Taliban and al Qaeda. He was born in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, was educated as a physician, and practiced medicine in Pakistan. “He was associated with Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan headed by late Maulvi Younas Khalis, which joined the Taliban Movement in 1996,” The Nation reported. He “was also part of the Afghan delegation flown to Sudan in 1996 to bring Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan.”On Dec. 19, 2000, al Haq was identified as a senior member of al Qaeda per United Nations resolution 1267. He accompanied Osama bin Laden during the 2001 battle at Tora Bora in Nangarhar province, and helped senior al Qaeda leaders escape the US and Afghan militia assault on the cave complex. During renewed fighting at Tora Bora in the summer of 2007, al Haq was reported to have been wounded and fled across the border into Pakistan's Kurram tribal agency. As security coordinator for the Black Guard, it is believed al Haq would be in close proximity to Osama bin Laden. US intelligence believes Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan’s tribal agencies, a claim the Pakistani government has denied.More...

Bad Defensive Rankings Costs Browns D-Coordinator Grantham His Job
    2008-01-11 16:56:17
The Cleveland Browns offense in 2007 was better than anyone could have expected.  As for their defense, it was bad enough to cost defensive coordinator Todd Grantham his job on Friday.  It was a stunning move for the Browns, as even as bad as the defense was it came as a surprise to fire a [...]

More Bills Coordinator Rumors: Schonert to be Promoted?
    2008-01-08 17:36:24
Hold the phone on Greg Olson, folks - apparently, Buffalo's offensive coordinator gig is close to going to a different candidate. Originally appearing in this article as a passing comment, and later expanded upon by WGR 550, Bills quarterbacks coach Turk Schonert is the leading candidate to take over Buffalo's offensive coordinator duties. The line from the article (which is largely about Olson): For a while, there appeared the chance that Olson could end up in Buffalo. The Bills lost offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild when he returned to the college ranks as head coach at Colorado State. Olson worked for Bills head coach Dick Jauron both in Chicago and Detroit. But league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday that Bills quarterback coach Turk Schonert is in line to become Buffalo's new offensive coordinator. My skepticism about "league sources" aside, Buffalo's lack of significant movement on the interview front has been pointing to this since Fairchild was officially o

Greg Olson Emerging as Coordinator Candidate in Buffalo
    2008-01-08 07:37:27
Time to put the roster breakdowns on hold, folks. It seems to be speculation at this point, but it's smart speculation - Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News reports this morning that former Rams offensive coordinator Greg Olson is a rumored candidate to replace Steve Fairchild-Mularkey as Buffalo's offensive coordinator. "Former Rams coordinator"... sounds familiar, right? Olson was a candidate for Buffalo's offensive coordinator position back in 2006, after Dick Jauron had just been hired, and as he was assembling his first staff. Current Rams head coach Scott Linehan was a new coach at that point as well, and Olson - formerly the quarterbacks coach for Jauron in both Detroit and Chicago - took up the same post with St. Louis. Don't Panic While Olson's rumored candidacy doesn't provide us with the most thrilling name out there (he's no Cameron or Martz), he's qualified for the position. In 2006 - his first year as a coordinator - the Rams finished fourth in the league in t

    Walton Done as Defensive Coordinator
    2007-12-18 11:59:00
In a surprising move, Randy Shannon has fired first year defensive coordinator Tim Walton. I say surprising because Randy has been quoted not too long ago as desiring to keep stability in the coaching staff, something the Hurricanes have not had in several seasons. The coaching carousel continues though, as reports came in that the two coaches had a falling out during the offseason.Though that's entirely possible, I believe this has more to do with the fact that the defense vastly underperformed this season, the first that Randy did not have control over since 2000. Randy has been known to use a predictable defensive scheme, typically just man 2 under, relying on his playmakers to lead the defense. However, the defense was top 10 in all but one of his seasons as defensive coordinator and took a noticeably steep dive with Walton in.The problems started with Oklahoma and continued on as teams like Duke, UNC, and GT had their ways with us. Finally came the 48-0 rout at the Orange Bowl, a

Story 11 - When a tuition coordinator falls ill
    2007-03-21 11:06:17
As we all know, tuition coordinators are also human beings and there will definitely be times when they fall ill. Have you wondered, what exactly happens when these coordinators take leave? Curious? Then, allow me to share with you my experience for the past few days. For these two days, I took medical leave as I was still sick from fever and cold. During these two days, there were incidents which took place that delighted me while there were also some which darkened my day. What made me upset was a parent calling to complain about a tutor not turning up for lesson. I expressed my apologies and listened on as the parent proceeded to talk about the tuition fees. At that point of time, I was feeling rather absurd because the parent did not clearly explain who she was. Eventually, I actually had to flip through my data before I realised whom she was. Well, perhaps you might call it the grumpiness of a patient but I guess we have to sympathise the tuition coordinators at times as well. Especially when they cannot get a good rest because of a case cropping up. On the other hand, there was a parent who truly touched me by the concern she expressed. Due to some reason, her tutor had to be replaced urgently and thus, she came looking for me. However, upon learning that I was sick, she rushed me off to rest immediately and told me to put the search for tutor on hold. How kind of her! Honestly, she could have gone off to another agency but she chose to wait for her tuition coordinator to recover and service her. It really touched me and I was so grateful that I went finding the replacement tutor despite being sick. The power of gratitude!Lesson of the day: Appreciate others for their efforts put in whatever they are doing and you will receive the best service in return.
