    Offshore Banking in Costa Rica
    2008-04-18 10:30:00
The presence of offshore banks in Costa Rica has grown exponentially in recent years. Within the last three years, the total amount of funds these banks have attracted has increased by 65%. This includes money private citizens and businesses have placed in savings and checking accounts, long or short-term money market accounts, retirement plans, credit loans and other financial services. The amount of funds collected by Costa Rica’s offshore banks exceeded $2.245 million as of September of 2007. To get some perspective on this number, just imagine that it’s equivalent to 9% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A reliable source defines GDP as “the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a given country in a given period of time (usually a calendar year).” A bank is termed ‘offshore’ when its official business address is located outside of Costa Rica. Typically, these banks are structured this way to take advantage of tax breaks and/or ...

    Costa Rica Travel Packages
    2007-10-06 11:12:17
Whether in search of the perfect vacation, business opportunities or simply an inexpensive and enjoyable place to retire, more and more people have found Costa Rica to be the ideal place for fun in the sun. Its strategic location, friendly people, warm climate, abundant natural attractions and a very competitive standard of living continue to draw people from all over the world who come looking to enjoy its many wonders.People‘Pura Vida’ is the expression that probably best sums up the tico (as Costa Ricans are also known) outlook on life. Roughly translated it means “life is great, everything is ok, don’t worry be happy”. This happy go lucky attitude is readily apparent to visitors exploring this friendly nation, and this combined with its wealth of natural resources probably explains why so many travelers end up making this oasis their home. In a region that historically has been a hotbed of conflict, the Costa Rican people, for the most part, have experienced relatively little bloodshed. This is due in part to the country’s unique historical, geographical and cultural circumstances, as well as to the peace loving nature of its people. This coupled with a large middle class has made Costa Rica one of the most democratically stable and prosperous countries in Latin America.Natural attractionsIn recent years Costa Rica has developed one of the world's most successful ecotourism industries and has been praised for its attention to conservation. Costa Rica’s natural diversity is reflected in the wealth and range of its wildlife. With just 0.03% of the earth’s surface area, Costa Rica possesses 6% of its species. Almost 9,000 plant species have been found here as well as 800 species of birds. About 27% of the country is protected within national parks and protected zones. In Costa Rica it is possible for a person to spend the night in a scenic mountain lodge, then head to a lovely Pacific beach for an early afternoon swim before ending up at a Caribbea...

    The Costa Rica Connection
    2007-07-26 08:00:49
Two nights ago I met up with my friend Stefan for some deep dish pizza and travel stories. We had only hung out once prior, in Santa Elena, Costa Rica about two years ago. Santa Elena is the little town outside the popular Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. No, the guy in the photo above is not Stefan. I just decided to snap that photo of some random backpackers because it was so typical of our lives on the road - acoustic guitar, beer, hammock, and a pollo (chicken) joint across the street from the hostel. So it was a little over two years ago that we hung out in the cloud forest, toured a cheese factory after an unsuccessful attempt to find a giant waterfall, and dined at that pollo place. Since then, we managed to e-mail each other the occasional update on our respective lives. Earlier this year, he sent me some of his experiences from India, which I promptly posted. And after his internship in Germany wrapped up, he bought a car in Philly, and swung through the Washington, ...

Partying in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
    2007-05-19 07:00:38
The following journal excerpts were written on Friday, May 20, 2005: I’m at Don Rufino in La Fortuna, Northern Costa Rica. I took a 7 am bus from Puerto Viejo to San Jose, got to an ATM, and took a cab to catch the 11:30 am bus to La Fortuna. 9 hours on a bus today – glad I can only afford to do that once this trip. It also made me realize, Panama and/or Corcovado would’ve finished my trip. That’s what I think I knew deep down when I decided to head north. As it is, I’m surprised how tight my next week will be. Yes, I’m trying to do a lot this trip. I should relax a bit, enjoy each moment, let go of the need to do every adventurous thing possible – I just don’t have the time. I have to set priorities. I shall step back and catch up with what happened yesterday. I think it’s certainly noteworthy. I, for the most part, spent the day lounging around Rocking J’s hostel, reading, and listening to mu...
