Hypertension Takes Huge Toll in Developing Countries
    2008-05-02 05:22:00
(HealthDay News) -- Roughly 80 percent of high blood pressure-related deaths in the world occur in developing nations, a new study by New Zealand researchers shows.Once regarded as a problem only in high-income countries, high blood pressure is now a global problem that affects both rich and poor nations, the researchers said. The researchers calculated that 7.6 million premature deaths (about 13.5 percent of the worldwide total) and 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYS) -- 6 percent of the worldwide total -- among people over age 30 were caused by high blood pressure in 2001.About 54 percent of strokes and 47 percent of heart disease cases were attributed to high blood pressure. About half of those cases occurred in people with hypertension (greater than 140 mm Hg systolic), while the remainder occurred in people with lesser degrees of high blood pressure. In high-income countries, the proportion of premature deaths due to high blood pressure was 17.6 percent, compared to 12

Some Countries May Have Slowed Bird Flu's Spread
    2008-04-15 09:27:36
(HealthDay News) -- Several strains of H5N1 bird flu virus that afflicted southern China were blocked from entering neighboring Thailand and Vietnam, say University of California, Irvine, researchers who conducted the first-ever statistical analysis of H5N1's genetic diversity. The information gleaned from this analysis may help scientists better understand how the strain migrates and, in future, determine the success of programs to halt the spread of the virus. The study was published online Feb. 27 in the journal PLoS One."Some countries appear more exposed to bird flu invasion than others. Learning that is a good step in discovering which social and ecological factors promote, or, on the other hand, hamper the virus' spread," lead author Robert G. Wallace, a postdoctoral researcher, said in a prepared statement. He and colleague Walter M. Fitch, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, analyzed almost 500 publicly available genetic sequences of proteins found on the surface of H

Teen Breast Augmentation Concerns In Foreign Countries:
    2008-04-07 03:43:00
Eighteen year old Stephanie Kuleba’s death due to complications during a breast augmentation surgery raised questions about the sensibility of encouraging elective plastic surgery among teenagers in America. The repercussions of this concern are being felt worldwide with various countries seeing a rise in teenage plastic surgery figures. In India, doctors are noticing a 20-25 percent increase in the number of teenagers contacting them for a plastic surgery procedure. They cite cosmetic breast augmentation and corrective breast reduction as the most popular cosmetic surgeries requested by girls and boys respectively. In Australia, the state of Queensland already bans people under eighteen from having any body piercing or tattoos and cosmetic surgery is all set to be included in the list as well. This country too seen a 20 percent rise in requests for cosmetic surgery from teenage girls.Zoning in again to the U.S., the Donda West Law is on the verge of attaining success and leading th

Thailand is currently one of the best countries in the world to make a property investment profit
    2008-03-17 03:27:00
Especially profitable are resort properties on Thailand's islands like Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan and even the mature market of Phuket still has fight left in it. In fact people who bought a property on Samui and Phuket two years ago have sold recently for a 100% profit.Phuket was popular before Koh Samui and as a result you won't get a resort villa there for very much under £500,000. With its world class white sandy beaches, tropical climate and in-land jungle, Phuket has become the place where the rich and famous buy their holiday homes.

Fewer Countries Double Tax Corporate Income
    2008-03-02 00:00:00
Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), has a Washington Times op-ed explaining the need to cut the U.S. corporate income tax to stay internationally competitive:Currently, the American corporate capital-gains tax rate is 35 percent, which happens to be the highest rate in its history, with the exception of 1940-41 owing to World War II. Some of our global competitors like Belgium, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore don't tax corporate capital gains.Other competitors offer far better capital-gains taxation than the United States. For instance, Japan and the United Kingdom have exemptions when capital gains are reinvested. Even France and Germany passed a 95 percent exclusion. And, only the United States, Sweden and the Netherlands still tax corporate income at the corporate level and then again at the individual level when shareholders receive dividends. The whopping 35 percent U.S. rate creates a "lock-in" effect of investment capital. This means that corporate taxpayers are l

New Countries and Old, The Dance Continues
    2008-02-19 08:59:00
Yesterday's News ~~ HistoryGeorge Washington was an interesting fellow by all accounts. And he had a strong connection to Jesuit Catholics which surprised the heck out of me. It just goes to show how truly cosmopolitan the world was, even in his time. He had a book of tips written by Jesuits in the 16th century, and recopied all 110 tips by hand. I thought this one was most telling of the times:"Kill no vermin, as fleas, lice, ticks, etc.,in the sight of others. If you see any filth or thick spittle, put your foot dexterously upon it, if it be upon the clothes of your companions, put it off privately, and if it be upon your own clothes return thanks to him who puts it off."Furthermore on Washington, who hasn't heard about his famous "wooden teeth?" Well, of course, some of us have learned that they were not wooden at all. But what they were is perhaps more surprising than the myth itself. It seems fitting today, since I believe Hawaii is holding a primary, to include some information

South Carolina High School Bans T-Shirts Depicting Countries' Flags
    2007-09-12 18:31:45
Ok now this is utterly preposterous. What's next? every single student must wear a white uniform to school? Perhaps they must not dye their hair any other color but blonde and wear blue contact lenses. What is going ON in this school??!!! Haven't they ever heard of the words "loyalty" and "patriotism?"It seems to me that by disallowing the students to wear their respective countries' flags upon their clothing, they are stealing something extremely precious from their students personalities - their sense of pride in their roots via their country of birth. I cannot see how this would benefit their lives in any positive way at all, for to me this greatly hinders their strength of character as they continue on their journeys into adulthood.READ ABOUT THIS HERE Practice non-violence in your lives. Malicious Internet Activity By Countries
    2007-09-03 09:38:00
The reality of Cyberwars reached a new level in the wake of sustained denial-of service attack on the Estonian government web sites which were targeted for several weeks in April and May this year. A global botnet of compromised home computers was used to create and direct the packet flood attack and hackers also defaced key government web sites.Malicious activity will continue to be on the rises as we move away to more and more towards e-commerce. This is going to poise a treat to the countries and business a like.According to Symamtec's last Internet Security Threat Report on malicious cyber activity in different countries the United States accounted for 31% of malicious activity, China came in second with 10%,Germany was in third place with 7%, France (4%) and United Kingdom 4% completed the top five.Taking the amount of a country's malicious activity and dividing by the number of that country's Internet users, Symantec found that Israel has the most per capita malicious Internet users, at 9 percent. Taiwan came in second, with 8 percent, and the United States came in third, with 6 percent.Fifty one percent of all underground economy servers known to the company were located in the United States—the highest total of any country. In that underground economy, your credit card, with a card verification number, will fetch between $1 and $6. Your identity is more pricey, going for $14-$18 including your U.S. bank account, credit card, date of birth and government-issued identification number.Malicious code sniffing out confidential information such as credit card numbers increased from 48 percent of Symantec's Top 50 malicious code reports in the first half of 2006 to 66 percent in the second half. Threats that log keystrokes and export sensitive user and system data increased, with keystroke loggers now making up 79 percent of threats to confidential information.China is becoming a powerhouse in the world of viruses, phishing scams, and botnets.
