Endangered Animal Papercraft - Fiddler Crab
    2008-06-29 09:36:43
Mostly found in muddied mangrove and salt marshes, the male Fiddler crabs are easily recognized by their distinctively asymmetric claws. They have one oversized claw called a cheliped that resembles a fiddle (violin), hence the name. That claw is waved around to attract females during courtship and used for defensive...

    A Hearty Crab Supper.
    2008-06-25 14:30:00
June 26 Dorothy Wordsworth, the sister of the poet William Wordsworth, was a writer herself , although she confined her work to a private journal. On this day in 1828 she was in the Isle of Man, and wrote: “ … Douglas harbour illuminated; … Joanna welcomed us with a dish of crabs sent by her kind friend Mrs. Putnam. Stars appearing at our return; after a hearty supper of crabs etc. retired to rest.” Crabs are decapod crustaceans. They are also very good to eat, if you don’t mind shelling out the crab meat, or shelling-out for pre-shelled meat in a restaurant. For some reason that I cannot explain, my first thought on reading this journal entry was ‘What have crabs to do with crab apples?’. Crab Apples are small, excruciatingly sour wild apples impossible to eat raw but fabulous for jam/jelly. Is the word in this context related to that of the fine animal that made Dorothy a fine supper? The origin, it has to be admitted, is uncertain. The OED give

    Curried Crab over Rice
    2008-06-23 06:29:00
There used to be a wonderful Indian restaurant on 58th Street, where from time to time I'd enjoy their Curried Crab appetizer. For $12, one could have a pint of curry-flavored crab. Every bite was amazing. Unfortunately they went out of business and I haven't had the dish in a while. This weekend Jessica's mom dropped off four medium-sized, steamed blue crabs, shipped in a bushel from Maryland (the crabs we talked about from Harbor House). Jessica ate two of them straight (they are seasoned with Old Bay) and left two for me. So last night I spent well over an hour picking all the meat out of them so I could recreate the curry dish. I think the results were worth the (extreme) effort.Ingredients3.5oz crab meat (two medium blue crabs)2 large garlic cloves, chopped0.5 small yellow onion, chopped3 tsp. good extra virgin olive oil1.5 tsp. curry powderred pepper flake to seasonkosher salt & black pepper to seasonInstructionsSaute the onion in 2 teaspoons of the oil over low heat in

    Blue Crab Facts
    2008-03-28 01:01:03
The blue crab is one of the most important crab species in the United States and there is an extensive fishery based around this tasty crustacean.Where do blue crabs liveDistributionThe blue crab is native to the western edge of the Atlantic ocean (including the gulf of Mexico) from about Nova Scotia in Canada through to Argentina. Overfishing has caused the population boundaries to decline somewhat, but they are still regularly encountered within these areas. Unfortunately the blue crab has been introduced into Japan and European waters possibly through the ballast water from ships.HabitatBlue crabs are found in brackish water near the mouths of rivers and they spend most of their time in muddy shores and bottoms.Fishing for blue crabsIn certain states of the US fishing for blue crabs is a popular pastime and like other crabs the best way to capture a feed is by using a crab pot of some form with a tasty bait inside. They can also be caught using dip nets (to scoop the crabs up) and o

    The Crab and His Mother
    2008-02-12 03:48:00
An old crab said to her son, "Why do you walk sideways like that, my son? You ought to walk straight." The young crab replied, "Show me how, dear mother, and I'll follow your example." The old crab tried, but tried in vain, and then saw how foolish she had been to find fault with her child. Moral: Example is better than precept.

    Stone crab season!
    2007-10-13 02:28:00
Are you looking for hard bottom? Chances are pretty good that someone’s done most of the work for you. If relatively shallow water fishing is what you look to do in the bays and just off the beaches, listen up. October 15, stone crab season begins. Crabbers are dropping their traps in areas on hard rocky bottom where stonies will reside. These same locations will likely hold baitfish that will attract Spanish and king mackerel, black sea bass, grouper, mangrove snapper, and a host of other fish. Targeting these spots on your way offshore or as destination locations will definitely increase your changes of catching more fish.

Preparation: 15 minutesMarinating time: 30 minutes280 Kcal (1,463 kJ) per portionRecipe for 4 peopleIngredients:1 pink grapefruit1 tablespoon of cider vinegar (example)a few drops of liquid acacia honey (example) - any other flower honey will do toohalf a teaspoon of Tabascothe juice of 1 lime2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil (example) - (replace by lemon or garlic oil for ex.)1 tablespoon of sesame oil (example) - (replace by sunflower oil for ex.)200g of crab meat - (replace by jumbo shrimp)100g of fresh (or frozen) shrimp - (replace by jumbo shrimp)200 g of guacamole (see recipe)chopped chivemint leaves (for decoration)salt, pepperPeel the grapefruit, separate the segments and cut them in pieces (it is best if you take all the skin of the segments off). Collect the juice while doing so.Whip the vinegar with the honey, the tabasco, the lime juice and the bit of grapefruit juice, the oils and a bit of pepper and salt.In a bowl, mix the crab meat, the grapefruit pieces, the shrimp with the sauce. Cover with plastic foil and let marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes (you can in the meantime prepare a fresh guacamole). At serving time, put the guacamole in nice glasses and add the crab/shrimp salad on top.Decorate with chopped chive and mint leaves. Serve cold. Wine suggestion: Saint Véran 2005 - or another Burgundy wine MY COMMENTS:This is such a delightful, fresh and easy to make starter. Served in glasses it looks like it comes straight out of a top restaurant. People will ask you what's in it believe me. The guacamole does not make it a 'light' dish, but it's a starter, so who cares...

Bu Pad Pong Karee (Curried Crab Claws) ปูผัดผงกะหรี่
    2007-08-08 17:22:00
This is a mild curried dish, usually served as a counterpoint to a more intense curry or garlic dish. It can be prepared with crab claws, or with a cup of crab meat, or a mixture of crab meat and shrimp. Since it is often eaten with chop sticks, you might consider removing the meat from the claws, as this makes it easier for the spice flavours to penetrate and easier to eat the food. Thai curry powder (phom kari) is unlikely to be available outside Thailand. Use a mild Indian curry powder instead. Prik yuak is a sweet green chili, if not available use green bell peppers or canned jalapeños to taste.Ingredients2 spring onions (scallions/green onions), sliced thinly1 cup crab meat1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thinly2 tablespoon fish stock1 teaspoon phom kari1 tablespoon light soy sauce2 tablespoon fish sauce2 tablespoon shallots, sliced thinly1 tablespoon julienned prik yuakpinch of sugarPreparationHeat some oil in a wok, and stir fry the garlic and onions.
