What do you do if you’re a first term senator with no military experience running for president against a decorated war hero and you want to criticize your opponent’s military credentials but lack credibility based on your own lack of military experience of any kind? You outsource, of course. In case you missed it, retired [...]

Chicago Mayor Lacks Credibility in Opposing Supreme Court Ruling...and Just About Everything Else
    2008-06-29 09:17:17
Democratic Mayor Richard M. Daley was not mayor when the City of Chicago instituted its Gun Registration program -- which effectively acted as a Gun Registration Ban. He was the Cook County States Attorney. During his time in that position he was aware of and presided over the most corrupt period of the Chicago Police Department in recent history...

Barclays warns of a financial storm as Federal Reserve's credibility crumbles
    2008-06-27 00:56:00
US central bank accused of unleashing an inflation shock that will rock financial markets, reports Ambrose Evans-PritchardBarclays Capital has advised clients to batten down the hatches for a worldwide financial storm, warning that the US Federal Reserve has allowed the inflation genie out of the bottle and let its credibility fall "below zero"."We're in a nasty environment," said Tim Bond, the bank's chief equity strategist. "There is an inflation shock underway. This is going to be very negative for financial assets. We are going into tortoise mood and are retreating into our shell. Investors will do well if they can preserve their wealth."Barclays Capital said in its closely-watched Global Outlook that US headline inflation would hit 5.5pc by August and the Fed will have to raise interest rates six times by the end of next year to prevent a wage-spiral. If it hesitates, the bond markets will take matters into their own hands. "This is the first test for central banks in 30 years and

Beauty Bloggers Gain Credibility in Industry
    2008-06-08 08:43:00
This is an article in WWD that was written (thanks to Rachel Brown) after many beauty bloggers attended the 2008 Total Beauty Blog Summit.Women’s Wear DailyPublished: Friday, June 06, 2008By Rachel BrownMANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — Beauty bloggers, once snubbed and now coveted by many of the beauty companies they adore, are on a bumpy evolutionary trek from detached commentators to industry insiders."They are like the QVC of this time," said Don Ressler, co-chief executive officer of Intelligent Beauty, owner of Redpoint Cosmetics and iQ Derma. "They have been really involved in the [beauty] space. They have really shown they have a voice."At the Total Beauty Blogging Summit held partially at Intelligent Beauty's headquarters here from May 16 to 18, the advantages and disadvantages of bloggers' rising power were etched out. On the plus side for bloggers, much of the beauty apparatus is taking them seriously as formidable links to consumers, and a support system of bloggers and online

Good or bad influence? Ability v credibility in public speaking
    2008-06-06 13:28:00
The London Book FairAn event which was going on at the same time that I was speaking in Hereford and Kent was the annual London Book Fair. I attended this trade show in 2004 with the intention of joining a screenwriting workshop but actually spent the day attending a number of other events and presentations. I think I may have gained more in the long term and the freebies, such as books, helped to offset some of the expense of travelling there!Public Speaking Tip #207: Trade fairs/shows/exhibitions can be a very good opportunity to hear a wide variety of speakers.I went to a fun quiz called Have I Got Publishing News For You?, based on the popular UK topical comedy show but featuring a panel of (apparently) big names from the book world and with an audience which included the Children's Laureate Dame Jacqueline Wilson. I can't claim to have understood too many of the in-jokes but the event was very slickly chaired by a PR man from the publishing world.I also observed a very energetic (

Book "What Muslims Really Think": Hammer Drops On Credibility
    2008-05-08 11:06:00
About ten days ago, I tapped out an article about an upcoming book titled, Who Speaks for Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think. Shortly there after, I added a comment regarding an article from jihadwatch.org that cast suspicions on the authors. Apparently, the mis-information runs even deeper. The authors of the book, Dalia Mogahed and John Esposito (prior to my discovery of the Jihadwatch.org article,) were listed with high regard as to their credentials and associations. After discovery of the article on jihadwatch.org, that quickly went south. As I mentioned in both my article, and later in my comment, I wasn't going to hold my breathe. But one could "HOPE" that the info was true that most muslims were moderate. Ever the eternal optimist am I,... I suppose. Now, as found in a The Weekly Standard article by Robert Satloff titled, Just Like Us! Really? the authors did some serious cooking of the books regarding the percentages of "moderate" to "radical" thought lines. Originally, i

On Electoral Behavior and the Credibility of Polling
    2008-01-28 11:04:00
The polling industry was rocked when Hillary Clinton won a come from behind victory in the New Hampshire primary despite the fact that the question raised by almost every poll taken immediately beforehand was not whether she would lose, but rather by how much. Pundits commonly talked about the Bradley effect, in which voters lie to pollsters about their willingness to support a candidate of color only to abandon this candidate in the privacy of the voting booth because of their own unspoken prejudices. Other pundits looked for other possible causes for Clinton's "silent surge." These reasons ranged from being emotionally-based (e.g., Clinton's crying) to institutionally-based (e.g., Clinton did better among Democratic establishment-types) to psychosocially-based (e.g., the male candidates were slighting Clinton much like the way many women feel the men in their professional and personal lives slight them). All of these explanations had some legitimacy. The sheer margin of Barack Oba

When Your Credibility Becomes Secondary To Bad Credit
    2007-12-22 02:53:38
A business stands firm on the ground with the help of funds. Every business man would know that without finances one can’t establish or advance a viable business plan. Not everyone is born with the kind of money required for furthering a business plan. Bad credit is so prevalent and this is the reason why we have bad credit business loans. In practice, bad credit cannot prevent you from having bad credit business loans. Bad credit business loans can be difficult to find but they are certainly not impossible to find. How to Annihilate Your Credibility
    2006-07-22 07:42:00
Presentations and addresses, ideally, should be inspiring and informational. For people to take notice of what you say and act on it, it is imperative you pay attention to the minute-to-minute management of your credibility and trust quotients. If you wish to become a virtuoso in getting an audience’s back up, the following credibility and trust annihilators may help you create the perfect recipe for suspicion and doubt. With a little practice, who knows, you could become a world authority on the subject?1. TRY TO BROWBEAT YOUR AUDIENCE: Tell your audience that they’re here to change their minds to your way of thinking – read your map on to their territory."It’s essential that you change the way you think about and do things. I think that unless you dramatically switch direction and follow my plan for this, we haven’t a chance in hell of getting this project up”2. TRY TO FOOL YOUR AUDIENCE: It rarely ever works. Audiences usually know when someone is trying to fool them because they’ve had a lifetime of experience fooling and being fooled. They sense when a speaker’s delivery and content are congruent and have inbuilt ways of determining whether he/she "walks the talk". They also sense when someone has chapter heading knowledge and can recite nice, plump clichés without really knowing the substance and depth of the ‘book’. When you are speaking, your audience needs to believe that you are not just a noisy bucket of water, but, rather, a fountain of knowledge. 3. CREATE SUSPICION ABOUT YOUR MOTIVES: Create suspicion that you are seeking to influence your audience for reasons of pure self-interest: that you have everything to gain from their assent “Forget the other wealth management funds. First National is one of the best companies I’ve ever held the agency for and I can tell you that the level of professionalism in fund management is second to none.”4. DEVELOP A SERIOUS “I” INFECTION: Demonstrate through your behaviour that your spee

Charismatic Communication – Ten Tips for Building and Maintaining Credibility
    2006-07-22 00:32:00
Some people imagine they carry credibility somewhere on their person. If that were the case you’d have most of the politicians and half of the CEO’s around the world lining up for credibility implants! Credibility isn’t something you have. It’s an honorific title bestowed on you by others. It is the end result of people placing their trust in you, and this is an important point to acknowledge and embrace. Credibility is earned when you adequately satisfy criteria for expertise and engender trust through building meaningful relationships with those you seek to persuade. Credibility management essentially describes the relationship you establish and maintain with your audience. It is the result of the minute-to-minute management of your audience’s credulity meter or the day-to-day management of honourable workplace or professional relationships. Charismatic communicators tend to engage in continuous monitoring to ensure that the credulity of their listeners is not tested either by what they say or how they say it. When credibility is absent, when credulity has been stretched to breaking point, your message will have about as much impact as a self-confessed serial burglar trying to convince a group of right-wingers that the three strikes law is unconscionable. At best you may evoke mute indifference, at worst, open scorn, astonishment, and you’d better believe it, organised hostility. The following actions and behaviours enhance credibility and receptivity, both in the workplace and in public forums:1) Begin your persuasion strategy with a passionate search for answers. Identify an issue, problem, or effect, and invite your listeners to help you solve it. Instead of announcing your perfect solution and reading your map on to your listeners’ territory, invite your audience to join in you creating a joint map of the available solutions. ”Competition in our industry is overwhelming. Everyone is competing on price. But, is a price war the answer to maint
