Game Thread; Cubs at Giants, 10:15 p.m. EDT/9:15 CT: Who's Got the Vivarin?

Yep, it's gonna be another long evening. Well, it is for you lucky ducks that get Comcast. I'll be somewhere looking at the ticker (the one bar near me that gets MLB Extra Innings is pretty dead during the week). But kudos to all that have been staying up, pretty good to see the comments hit the 200+ mark in the last couple nights, hasn't been that way in a while. Keep it up, night owls!! After splitting the first two games, the Cubs look to regain the advantage. They'll be facing Kevin Correia, who has just one win this season, and that came back in April. He was hurt, though, and has actually done OK in his last few starts, so this isn't another Barry Zito, necessarily. The Cubs will send out Ryan Dempster, who was brought back to Earth from all that All-Star/Cy Young talk after giving up eight runs Friday against the White Sox in just 2.1 innings. It was not pretty. SuperDemp hopefully isn't too hungover from heavy partying celebrating yesterday's Canada Day. Those crazy Canadian

Game Eighty-Four: Cubs (50-33) vs. Giants (36-47) Game Time - 9:15pm C.T. Coverage - TV: WGN - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 189 Location - AT & T Park, San Francisco Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96/1.52) vs. Matt Cain (4-6, 4.44/1.36) Lou Piniella's crew will try to post back-to-back wins on the road tonight for the first time since departing Toronto on June 15th. Jason Marquis is coming off a bad start against the Orioles but has pitched well on the road. Piniella received more than a quality outing from Ted Lilly on Monday and with a well rested pen, if Marquis struggles it could be a short night. Piniella mentioned before Monday's game Daryle Ward will likely start in left tonight against Matt Cain and Sean Gallagher will start the finale on Thursday. Piniella was toying with the idea of putting Gallagher in the pen when Carlos Zambrano returned but with the way he finished against the White Sox on Saturday, Sean Marshall will be Piniella's second lefty option out of the pen starti

Never been there, but I've heard its nice I don’t know about everyone one else, but after witnessing this weekends dismal display of pitching and less than stellar offense it was nice to see the team rebound on both fronts last night.   So the losing streak was at least interrupted and tonight they try for a new streak, hopefully one in the W column.  Of course the Cubs are without Aramis, who is still home for "family matters" (which I believe is because his wife is having a kid, but nobody seems to be printing that), Soriano is still out, D Lee is still a double play machine, and left field has been manned by a combination of Carrot Top and Eric Patterson's impersonation of an outfielder. But fear not, we still got DeRo! (for the record, that last part wasn't sarcasm) Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96 ERA) is pitching for the boys in blue tonight.  He got a little roughed up by Baltimore last week, but what can you do.  I'm hoping for a strong rebound tonight

". . . so I went for it, and she totally slapped me across the face!" So let me get this straight: Soriano is out, Z is out, Edmonds has an old person's foot, Theriot's hand hurts, Johnson is on the DL, and Ramirez has to go to the Dominican Republic for three days to deal with family issues. This should make for an interesting lineup. Still, we have a better chance at winning tonight than we have in the last few games. Why, you ask? Because tonight we're facing Barry Zito. Zito only got his third win of the season on June 25. He's got a 7.34 ERA at home and has barely made it out of the 5th most starts this season. He leads the NL in losses and is 5th in the league in base on balls. Translation: even the hapless Ronny Cedeno should be able to hit this guy. Which reminds me: Jim Hendry, I've disagreed with a lot of your moves over the years, but one move I do not disagree with is your failure to sign Barry Zito. Well done. As a team, the Giants are 10 games under .500, 13th in the l

Coverage - TV: Comcast SportsNet - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 189 Location - AT & T Park, San Francisco Ted Lilly (8-5, 4.74/1.32) vs. Barry Zito (3-11, 5.91/1.82) If there is such a thing as a must win for a team 16 games over .500 on the last day of June....tonight's game fits the bill. Lou Piniella's crew opens a 4-game series in San Francisco in need of a victory and will face a Giants' team for the first time without Barry Bonds. Ted Lilly will have the task of ending the Cubs longest losing streak of the season....without one of the Cubs' biggest bats. Aramis Ramirez will miss the first 3 games and a club already missing one big bat will find itself even shorter for the next three nights. This is an important week for the Cubs after posting just one win in their last 6 games....

Coverage - TV: ESPN Sunday Night Baseball - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 178 Location - U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago Sean Marshall (0-1, 5.40/1.72) vs. Mark Buehrle (5-6, 4.04/1.31) It's game three of round two....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the final game of the 2008 Crosstown Classic. The Cubs will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the White Sox, as well as try to keep from losing their fourth game in a row for the first time this season. The Cubs' Interleague schedule concludes tonight on the last Sunday in June and Lou Piniella's crew is in need of a win. The Cubs have struggled on the road, even within the Chicago city limits, and are not playing with the same confidence away from the Friendly Confines. In recent history, the Cubs have played better on the road than at home and while the play at Wrigley is the sole reason the Cubs are still in

See that? That is a rally animal. Or, if you prefer, a "rallymal." If you're new to LOHO (in which case you probably don't fully appreciate my love for the giant squid, either), we have an entire stable of them, and you're going to start seeing them.  A lot. Because if we ever needed a rally, it's now. I have nothing more to add. Just win. Linesups to come.

It's game two of round two....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the Crosstown Classic. Today marks the halfway point of the 2008 season, game 81 of 162, and the Cubs are in need of a win. Not because it is the White Sox but because they are banged up and are not playing good ball right now. Lou Piniella's crew has lost 3 out of 4 and 4 straight on the road and a win today would help them avoid their second 3-game losing streak of the year. It app

After a pleasant (if ultimately unsatisfying) three game series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Cubs resume their tireless battle against the Cthulhu-loving Chicago White Sox. The giant Cubs-colored head of Barack Obama has just one question for all of us. Yes We Can! Because Barack Obama is a White Sox fan, I think I speak for all of us when I say he is not my first choice for President.  That honor has to go to the Constitutionally-ineligible-but-nevertheless-undaunted Ryan Scott Dempster If elected, Ryan Dempster will be our first Canadian President, ending the years of oppression Canadians have suffered under American-American rule. When he's not executing child rapists single-handed, Dempster is pitching pretty well for the Cubs.  In his last start, he went 8 innings and only let up one run. Ryan is a Taurus, and his horoscope is: The mere mention of your name strikes fear and terror in the hearts of men, though that's mainly because it's so difficult to pronounce

Game Thread, Orioles at Cubs, 2:20 p.m. ET/1:20 CT: Edmonds is a ... ballplayer?!?
    2008-06-26 11:18:29
I'm beginning to be a closet you fan. Shhhhhh. Well, flyball already touched on this in her headlines, but it can be stretched out here as well, as unbelievable as it is. The question/statement/bewilderness: Maybe we were wrong about Jim Edmonds? I mean, check this tidbit out in today's Trib: Jim Edmonds has gone from being released in May to a potential National League Player of the Month in June. The Cubs center fielder is hitting .352 (19-for-54) in June with five doubles, five homers, 18 RBIs a .438 on-base percentage and a .759 slugging percentage. Pretty amazing, considering that this is a guy who was probably one or two 0-4's away from getting his outright release a month ago. The reason for the turnaround is beyond me. Sure, Petco Park is a pitcher's haven, but my 8-year-old cousin could have done better than Jimbo while with the Padres. Here's Edmonds' take (you may need a language decoder for this) on his newfound success: "Winning breeds success, or winning breeds all the g

Today is the last home game for the Cubs until Dusty Baker and company returns to Chicago on July 8th. The Cubs begin their longest road trip of the year on Friday on the South Side. The 10-game road trip will conclude on July 6th after four games in San Francisco and three games in St. Louis. The Cubs will likely be without Kosuke Fukudome today. Fukudome is listed as day-to-day with tightness in his left calf and Piniella said after Wednesday's game that Fukudome would probably be held out of the day game on Thursday.

After a tough loss on Tuesday, the Cubs should be out to prove that Tuesday's loss was a blip on the home radar screen. The Cubs offense will unfortunately face another pitcher they have no history against in southpaw Brian Burres. Since the opener against the Blue Jays on June 13th, the Cubs have faced 8 different starters for the first time. The keys to a win tonight is patience at the plate and Ted Lilly putting his team in position to win the game....and most importantly keeping the Orioles from leaving the yard.

Padres should trade Maddux to Chicago Cubs
    2008-06-25 11:37:00
The Padres should do Greg Maddux a favor and trade him to a contending team – the Chicago Cubs. The last-place Padres aren’t doing Maddux any good, but vice versa isn’t necessarily true.Maddux is winless in eight starts since career victory No. 350 on May 10, yet it isn’t his fault at all.Since then, Maddux is 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA and has watched the beleaguered Padres’ bullpen blow the lead four times after he left a game while in line for win No. 351.This has to stop! The Padres have long coveted Cubs outfielder Matt Murton, so a Maddux-for-Murton trade could certainly be in line at this point since Murton does little more than warm Chicago’s bench.Plus, sending Maddux to the Cubs could turn out to be one of those Cinderella stories that are few and far between in Major League Baseball.Maddux pitched his first career game in relief for the Cubs on Sept. 10, 1986; remaining with Chicago until playing for Atlanta (1993-2003) and returning to the Cubs (2004-July 2006).As the Cu

Edmonds key reason Chicago Cubs are winning
    2008-06-23 10:38:00
The St. Louis Cardinals didn’t want Jim Edmonds back after eight seasons with them. The Padres didn’t want him around after the first 1 ½ months of the 2008 season. So what is Edmonds doing these days? How about helping the Chicago Cubs on their way to a possible first World Series title in 100 years? The Cubs have Major League Baseball’s best overall record (48-28) and have won 14 straight at home.In his last 10 games, Edmonds is batting .333 with three home runs and nine RBIs.In Saturday’s 11-7 win over the Chicago White Sox, Edmonds hit two home runs in the same inning.“Whenever you get done tying me to the Cardinals, it'll be fine so I can start getting a little bit of Cubs' history in my background,” Edmonds told reporters after Saturday’s game.It now appears the Padres let Edmonds go too early. Perhaps they/he rushed him back into the lineup too soon after suffering a spring training injury. For now, it looks like Edmonds is the Cubs’ gain … and a big loss for the P

Are the Cubs Interested in Rich Harden?
    2008-06-23 06:00:00
As discussed in previous articles over the last few weeks, many of the experts think the Cubs will add a starting pitcher before the non-waiver trade deadline on July 31st. Several names have surfaced since the first of the month, and usually it is the player that no one knows about that ends up being involved in a trade. By now many have begin to dream about a Cubs' rotation that includes C.C. Sabathia. But Buster Olney thinks if the Indians do put their ace on the block then the Brewers would have the trading chips in their farm system needed to land the Cy Young Award winner and not the Cubs....although Olney does feel the Cubs would be right behind the Brewers in their attempts to land Sabathia. During Dave Kaplan's show on Friday night, in between reveling in the walk-off win and discussing Carlos Zambrano's injury with Todd Hollandsworth, the host of Sports Central on WGN casually mentioned the Cubs' interest in Rich Harden.

    Another Gem for Dempster....Cubs Sweep!
    2008-06-23 00:27:11
Game Seventy-Six - Cubs 7 White Sox 1 WP - Ryan Dempster (9-2) LP - Javier Vazquez (7-6) Save - None The Cubs won their 14th straight at Wrigley Field for the first time since June 4 - July 10, 1936 and their sixth straight against the White Sox behind another dominating performance by Ryan Dempster. Dempster allowed only 1 run in 8+ innings on 10 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk. The key to Dempster's success was staying ahead in the count for a majority of the game and the three double plays turned by the Cubs defense. Dempster threw first pitch strikes to 26 of the 32 hitters he faced. The Cubs offense gave Dempster a 2-run lead in the 1st inning and then Aramis Ramirez, Eric Patterson and Derrek Lee took care of the rest. Lee drove in the first run of the game with a single to right center and added a RBI double in the 8th inning. Eric Patterson had another tremendous game hitting behind Kosuke Fukudome. Patterson was 2-for-3 with 2 walks, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI's and his first ca

Um. . .honey. . . enough already Let's just take a moment and reflect upon the bounty the baseball gods have bestowed upon us this glorious evening: We have a nationally-televised game. . . always good for fun at LOHO. We have his excellence, Joe Morgan, possibly to be accompanied by an unknown man of a questionable occupation (and no, I don't mean Jon Miller) as seen here: Do you understand what I'm telling you? Joe Morgan. . . Wrigley Field. . .  Ryan Theriot. . . possibly Mike Fontenont. If you're a fan of "scrappy" players, tonight is your night. Furthermore, we have a chance to you-know-what the hated White Sox, further frustrating the evil A.J. Buttzynski in the process: All in all, that makes for a fun night. Speaking of fun, has anyone seen Jason 'Super Mario' Giambi lately? I can't help but feel that someone shouold have pointed this out before now: Click here to chat:

Game Seventy-Five - Cubs 11 White Sox 7 WP - Jason Marquis (6-3) LP - Jose Contreras (6-6) Save - Kerry Wood (19) The Cubs came from behind for the 24th time at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon to beat the White Sox for the second day in a row. Jason Marquis served up two, 2-out, 2-run home runs that accounted for all 4 of the White Sox runs. Lou Piniella's crew found themselves in a big hole against a pitcher that had allowed only 4 home runs on the season. Then Jim Edmonds stepped into the box in the bottom of the 4th.... Jim Edmonds hit a 0-1 pitch from Jose Contreras into the stands in left and Mike Fontenot followed with his first home run since May 3rd on the next offering from Contreras. The Cubs hit back-to-back homers for the second day in a row and the Cubs were down by only 1 run, 4-3. Ryan Theriot walked after Geovany Soto grounded out to short for the innings first out. Jason Marquis missed two bunt attempts before singling to right. Kosuke Fukudome tied the game wit

I just never get tired of looking at it Given the above picture, you guys probably think I'm going to write some snarky diary about the Sox. But you would be wrong. Instead, I'm going to tell you a story of community, humanity, and unconditional love. I arrived in my section yesterday, to find that the 50/50 split of Cubs and Sox fans were already fighting. At least two different sets of guys were separated by security before the game even started. After that, we took to booing every time someone in a Sox shirt entered our section, and the Sox fans returned in kind. Then he appeared at the top of the stairs to our section. Let's call him "Kenny." The round of booes for the slip of an Afican American man, roughly 45, in a White Sox t-shirt died out quickly as people realized that something was different about Kenny. It soon became clear that Kenny couldn't move the entire right side of his body. He stood at the top of the stairs, looking doubtfully down the steep concrete stairs that

That was the way Pat Hughes called it as Ron Santo was screaming "yes" and "thank you" while the rest of Wrigley exploded with another dramatic comeback at the old ballpark at 1060 West Addison. Lou Piniella's crew won their 12th straight at Wrigley with the 23rd come from behind win at home. After a miserable road trip, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez both stepped up and led the team to victory. The Cubs hit back-to-back home runs for the third time this season to tie the game at 3 in the 7th, the first time since 2005 the Cubs hit back-to-back jacks i

I hope everyone's been practicing their pirouettes and snapping in time to Bernstein, because it's time for the intra-city war that will make Jets vs. Sharks look like Hailie vs. United States.  (Hailie: 7, United States: nothing.) You see?  It can be done!  Let's beat those Sox! But enough with the cultural bon mots and fancy-pants allusions.  You didn't come here to be reminded that Diablo Cody is smarter than you, the way Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot is cooler than any Power Ranger Zord.  You came here for baseball.  Here is my much-too-extended analysis: Pitchers Ted Lilly takes the mound for our Baby Bears.  Ted is really starting to pitch well of late- he has 6 wins in his last 9 starts, and has lowered his ERA from 6.46 at the end of April to its present 4.76.  Ted Lilly also leads the Cubs in strikeouts, with 83.  (Ryan Dempster has 81.) So what's been the key for Ted's Turnaround?  Cubs f/x says he's actually throwing hi

Both the Cubs and White Sox are dealing with injuries and both teams have climbed to the top of their division in different ways. The Cubs with offense and good pitching and the White Sox with outstanding pitching....so something's gonna give this weekend. Lou Piniella's crew will be without the services of Alfonso Soriano and could be without both Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson while the Sox will not have Paul Konerko for the weekend. The Cubs are in uncharted territory. After becoming the last team in the majors to lose their third game in a row on Thursday, they turn to Ted Lilly to avoid their first 4-game

Sean Gallagher has yet to post a win on the road at the big league level but he has shown steady improvement for the most part this season....and there is no time like the present. The Cubs offense will have the tough task of beating James Shields and with the day game on Friday, Lou Piniella will likely sit Geovany Soto in favor of Henry Blanco. The Cubs need the win to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the season....

Kind of looks like Zambrano, right? While all of us wait for MRI results on the Cubs' ace pitcher, the team will try to avoid the broom against Tampa Bay. I got to watch the game last night, and I am very glad I'm not a Rays fan. I couldn't look at that field (even in HD) for 81 games. And I'm still not convinced the Rays can keep up their good play over the course of the season (that lineup doesn't impress me much, and their pitching is young, can it hold up?), I'll give credit where credit's due, though-for now. Tampa Bay is no longer the butt of the A.L. East, or even the A.L. for that matter. Trying to salvage a game tonight is Sean Gallagher, or, as Julie calls him, "Superfudge." He hasn't been bad as a No. 5 guy, but you pretty much know what you're going to get with Gallagher right now, 5-6 innings, 6-7 hits and probably 3 runs allowed. Like I said, not bad for back of the rotation. Going up against him for Tampa is James Shields, one of the Rays' young arms. Shields has a los

Carlos Zambrano will have the task of trying to shutdown the Rays tonight and give his offense a chance to hand him his first victory since June 2nd. The Cubs found out how tough it is to play at the Trop on Tuesday and hopefully they will have the same results for the next two games as they did in Toronto after dropping the first game. Look for Lou Piniella to use a balanced lineup tonight against Andy Sonnanstine as righties hit (.315) just as good as lefties (.289) off the young right hander.

Get us back on track, Big Z So, everyone will have to forgive me these next two days because I'm still a little scatterbrained from vacation. I really still don't know what's going on with the team besides Soriano's broken hand (dammit) and the fact that the Cubs still rule MLB. It's also very hard to wrap my head around the fact Jim Edmonds hit a game-tying HR in the 9th last week, but I saw video, so it must be true. Anyway, the Cubs look to even up against the Rays tonight after kind of a weird game last night that ended with a Reed Johnson bunt. If nothing else, it gave the Cubs blogosphere something to talk about until tonight's game. And Johnson's interesting choice of at-bat also helped out the crappy return of The WAGGLE, who decided to try something new by striking out twice. Big Z (8-2, 2.98) will take the mound for the Cubs. He looked somewhat recovered from that Gatorade battle (which was another thing humorous to follow in Spanish), giving up two runs in seven innings las

How can anyone not like the Cubs? Tonight the Cubs pack up their vericose veins and white shoes and head to Del Boca Vista to take on the perennial laughing stock Devil Rays. Only this year they aren't so funny. In fact, they're pretty damn good. The Cubs have the best record in baseball. Tampa has the SECOND best record in baseball. To combat this threat to our supremacy in the baseball universe, the Cubs have called up Matt Murton. Heh. Suck on that, Tampa. Tonight Ryan Dempster takes the mound against Scott Kazmir. I don't know about you guys, but anyone who spells the last name "Cashmere" as "Kazmir" looks like a commie pinko to me. My point is that if the Cubs win, America wins. Tonight's game is on Comcast (again). Lineups to come.

At least it's on WGN. For some reason, as of yet still unexplained to me, the Cubs have to stop off in Cooperstown on the way to Tampa to play the Padres in an exhibition game. I hate exhibition games, including Spring Training, which I would limit to about a week if it were up to me. The only exhibition games I've ever supported was the Windy City Classic back before inter-league play, and that was only because it was the only change we had all season to go into second on a hard slide and stick it to the South Side. At any rate, I've been advised by MLB, via restraining order, that they don't care about my opinion, so the fake game will go on today as scheduled. We still have no idea who is pitching (my money is still on the expendable Jon Lieber), but here's what Cubs.com has to say about the lineup: You may not recognize some of the names who will be playing for the Cubs unless you know the Minor League system. Among the players expected to be called up for the game are Junior La

Lou Piniella's crew will try to win their first series ever against the Blue Jays today behind Ted Lilly. The Cubs dropped the first game 3-2 and put up a crooked number in the 2nd inning against Roy Halladay on Saturday that led to an impressive 6-2 win. It will be up to the former Blue Jay to give his new team a chance to figure out Jesse Litsch. Piniella mentioned after Saturday's game that Reed Johnson would be the Cubs leadoff hitter, at least for now. 'Lou's Lineup Tinkering' should continue throughout the road trip and into the series against the White Sox, but it appears Johnson will start games off for the immediate future.

Happy Fathers' Day to all the dads out there, especially mine. Without dads, there could be no "daddy's little girl," and I'm not sure where that would have left me. So plant yourself in the butt-groove on your couch, grab your bowl of pork rinds, and settle in to watch some baseball, soccer, and US Open today. In a related story, I flipped a hash brown onto my bare foot while making Max's breakfast this morning, so if anyone knows how to treat third-degree burns, I would appreciate the advice. As we briefly discussed yesterday, with a win today, the Cubs can hit 20 games over .500. This is definitely uncharted territory in my lifetime, which makes me faintly dizzy and a little sick to my stomach. In headlines today, Lou says he likes Reedz in the leadoff spot: "I would think you'll see him in there more often than not," Piniella said. Lou is a man of few words. And Reedz is puzzled by his popularity in Toronto: Why is Johnson so popular in Toronto? "I don't know," he said. "I play

Specifically, while making veiled references to Bob and Doug MacKenzie and the Great White North, he left them off the list by name. Anyone who has ever seen "Strange Brew" or heard the MacKenzie Brothers' version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," knows that this injustice should not be allowed to stand. Umbra, I take issue with your list, Sir. and I think I've made my point. In related news, the Cubs are still in the Great White North today, taking on the Jays today. Again. Let's hope it's no longer throw-back time in Toronto, beacause I practically went blind looking at those horrible sky blue jerseys against the flourescent green astroturf. For those of you who are not familiar with Canadian history, customs, and culture, here is a short primer on things that Canadians have contributed to the world: 1.  The Red Green Show The Red Green Show is one of the greatest comedic achievements of mankind.  Cabin-dweller Red Green and his Pointdexter-y nephew Harold hang out at Possum Lodge while sharing Northwoods wisdom and advice that I have tried to live my life by. It looks like we have a swell game on our hands today.  Chicago's National League Baseball Club will be hosting that great team from the East, the Boston Braves.   Today's baseball flashback comes to you courtesy of 60 years of Cubs baseball on WGN tv.  No offense to the nice people at WGN, but you could have picked a better year.  In 1948 the Braves went 91-62 and finished 1st in the NL.  The Cubs?  Yeah, it was one of those years, 64-90 and dead last. On the mound for Chicago is Big Z, who at 8-2 has the same record as last night's winner Dempster (crazy isn't it?)  Now you know that's just got to aggravate Zambrano, so he better step up today.  Of course not having a meltdown in the dugout would also be good.   On the other side is Time Hudson.  At 7-4 with a 2.86 ERA it looks like Hudson might actually give the Braves a chance.  But he walks a lot of batters, and after 2 nights in a row of being used in the 4th getting int

(Disclaimer: Mark and doc blume, don't read this diary) So I know it's not good to say so, but I'm feeling pretty good about our little group these days. Soriano? Infuriating, but I can live with the HRs. Fukudome? Taught our entire team patience at the plate. Suck on that, Gerald Perry. Lee? The view from the rear makes up for a lot. Kerry? Badass. Soto? Badass. Marmol? Badass. I don't even want to kill Theriot at this point in time. See where I'm going with this? Tonight Chipper and his .420 average leads the Braves into Wrigley to take on our boys in blue. While on the one hand, I'm kind of cheering for someone to hit .400 again, I'm not really sure I want that person to be "Chipper" Jones. What kind of grown man allows people to call him "Chipper?" Wrong, wrong, wrong. I can't respect that. Despite the fact that the Braves have the reincarnation of Ted Williams, or at least his head, in their lineup, the team is only at .500 for the year. Unfortunately for us, Tom Glavine heads t

Coverage - TV: ESPN Sunday Night Baseball - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 184 Location - Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles Jason Marquis (3-3, 5.02/1.66) vs. Brad Penny (5-7, 5.45/1.57) The Cubs will try to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the year and in the process post their second winning road trip of the season tonight behind Jason Marquis. Lou Piniella's crew won the first two games of the west coast swing with solid victories over the Padres but have lost three out of the last four. Piniella called Saturday's game "pivotal" in his pre-game show and maybe the way the Cubs lost the game will serve as wake up call to a team that has struggled on the road. Tonight is the last game of the season against the Dodgers, the Cubs have won 4 of the first 6 after winning only 2 of 7 a year ago....

Game Sixty-Three - Cubs 3 Dodgers 7 WP - Derek Lowe (4-5) LP - Carlos Zambrano (8-2) Save - None Carlos Zambrano and Derek Lowe locked in a pitcher's duel for most of Saturday afternoon at Chavez Ravine. The Cubs offense did not record their first hit until the 5th inning but took a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout in the same inning by Reed Johnson. Alfonso Soriano hit his 15th long ball of the season to start the 6th and the Cubs led 2-0. The Dodgers tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the 6th after another botched call at 1st base and a 2-run shot by Russell Martin. The Cubs battled back to take the lead in the top of the 7th on a RBI single to right by Carlos Zambrano but the defense let down their ace in the bottom of the 7th. The Dodgers plated 5 runs before Zambrano left the game and took out his frustrations on several coolers in the dugout. The Cubs had chances to get out of the inning but a dropped ball by Ryan Theriot on a stolen base attempt by Juan Pierre and a throwing err

Finally, a game I can stay awake for. There's really not much to say about today's game.  Kuroda pitched a great game last night and we couldn't hit anything. Today's a new day, Z is headed to the mound, and it's time to get back on track. Lineups to come.

The Cubs need their ace to step up today, throw strikes, keep his pitch count low and give his team a chance to figure out how to plate runs against Derek Lowe. The Dodgers' sinkerballer is back on track, after a horrible start to the year, and the Cubs must be patient and make him work. If the offense uses the same approach as it did against Lowe back on May 28th....it could be a short game with more zeroes on the scoreboard. Lou Piniella mentioned after Friday's game that he was going to look into how Jose Ascanio has pitched since returning to Iowa, 10 days ago. Look for a roster move soon and hopef

Tonight's game features two imported Japanese stars- Kosuke Fukudome of the Cubs, and Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers.  When Alfonso Soriano played in Japan, he was on Kuroda's team. In honor of this, here is a picture of another thing imported from Japan: crunky candy! Fukudome gets crunk every night- so can you!  On candy! The Pitchers For the Chicago Cubs, it's the baby of the rotation- Sean Gallagher.  But this is no normal seven lb., 9 oz. baby.  This is a 6-2, 235 lb. baby that throws krazybombs at your face. Sean's last start was June 1 against Colorado, where he only pitched 2 and 2/3rds innings, letting up 3 runs and 6 hits.  Of course, he also struck out 8 batters and walked no one.  I'd like that to continue. Sean is a Capricorn, and his horoscope is: Look to the Bible for the answer to your problems this week, or any other heavy book you can use to kill spiders. Lou Piniella's young right-hander is coming of a solid win in his last start and has earned a spot in the rotation with his last two outings. Tonight is a rematch from game two of the series in Wrigley on the cold night following Memorial Day. The offense will have the challenge of figuring out Hiroki Kuroda early....and not wait until the 7th inning. Geovany Soto was nominated for May's MLB Rookie of the Month award. Soto won the honor sponsored by Gillette for April. The CCO was asked to remind our readers to go and vote for Soto (click here to vote) before June 8th. The first game of the series features a rematch of the game on Memorial Day at Wrigley. Ryan Dempster will look for his first road win of the season and first career victory at Dodger Stadium while Chad Billingsley will try to continue his scoreless innings streak on the mound. The last runs Billingsley allowed was off the bat of Derrek Lee in a 3-1 loss to the Cubs on May 26th. The Dodgers are struggling right now, offensively. Let's hope the Dodgers don't have home umps like this tonight. Well, not really. I lived there (Hermosa Beach) for three years as a child, and all I remember was smog and lots of traffic. (And yes, I know the above clip features the Angels, not the Dodgers, but it's still funny as hell. Especially the third strike call. Frank Drebin will forever be the man.) Anyway, after the Padres decided to finally win a game (bastards!), the Cubs make the in-state trek to the City of Angels, hoping to start a whole new winning streak. The awesomeness that is Ryan Dempster hits the mound tonight against Chad Billingsley in a rematch of a game May 26, which the Cubs won 3-1. Both pitchers did pretty well in that game, Billingsley struck out seven in the loss. A replay of the final would be OK by me, especially since the Cards already won the first game of their doubleheader today. Chat room link will be up later, and if you haven't yet, make sure to check flyball's sidebar diary on today's draft a

A win tonight will give the best team in baseball 10 straight (Wowza!). And as the above pic states, we at IALOHO are open late again tonight! Come join your fellow commenters in the chat room. Why? Well, three good reasons: 1. It's hump day for one, only two more days to the weekend! 2. The game is on WGN, so all of us non-Chicagoites/ans can watch! 3. I may even show up! Well, two out of three ain't bad. Please keep your arms and legs inside the car as you strap into the Ted Lilly Experience. Twists, turns, exhilaration, screaming, cursing, smiling ... the T.R. Chicago Cubs just keep on pounding
    2008-06-04 12:10:00
How about those Chicago Cubs? After watching the Cubs pound the Padres the last two nights, it’s obvious this is a team with legitimate high hopes in 2008.The Cubs are flat-out beating the Padres; rather than having the Padres beat themselves as they do so often. What’s most impressive about the Cubs is how they just seem to hit line drive after line drive after line drive.Padres’ catcher Michael Barrett, who played for the Cubs until last June, is certainly aware of his former team’s offensive prowess.“One thing that’s impressive about them is that they have such a high on base percentage,” Barrett told the Associated Press. “The biggest thing about that lineup is that they really forced us to come to them. You don't see them making too many quick outs.”Speaking of, it’s hard to get quick outs when you don’t throw strikes.Padres starting pitcher Wil Ledezma threw 100 pitches in 4 2/3 innings Tuesday night, including 61 to the last 12 batters he faced (averaging mor

You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here. Oh wait. Yes, you can Because the game is still approximately 18 hours away, I figured I'd throw the game thread up early in case I fall asleep later. The Cubs and Pads are back at it tonight. While I'd love to feel incredibly confident about the way we're playing the baseball these days, it has come to my attention that Jason Marquis is pitching tonight. Lou, I implore you, for the love of God, there has to be someone else we can run out there instead of Marquis. Sean Marshall, perhaps? But perhaps we should look at Marquis as a blessing. Wiping the floor with the other team day after day is boring. At least this way we don't know what's going to happen. Well, I mean, we DO, but we don't know if we'll be able to overcome it. That's called "drama" and people pay lots of money to see it at the theater. Jason Marquis is going to give it to you for free. You're welcome. If you're looking for a way to kill time before tonight's game, yo

Carlos Zambrano had little to no command, or control of himself, until he picked off Jody Gerut at 2nd base to end the 2nd inning. Zambrano led off the 3rd with a single then settled down. Zambrano turned in a better day at the plate than on the mound. Zambrano was 3-for-3 with a game tying triple in the 4th. As for the 'day job', Big Z did just enough to earn the win. He left after 5 innings with his team up 6-3. Zambrano gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings with 4 walks, a hit batsman and 2 strikeouts. The Cubs' middle relief had problems finding the strike zone with the exception of Jon Lieber. Whoever stays awake the longest tonight gets to vote one LOHO reader off the site Tonight's game is on the West Coast, and, therefore, will start at a widly inappropriate time and will conclude sometime around 5 minutes before my alarm goes off tomorrow morning. Be at as it may, your trusty LOHO friends (or, at least, ME) will try to hold out in the chat as long as humanly possible, which probably means we'll last until sometime around 10:30. But it's really the thought that counts. Tonight Z looks to get back on track against some pitcher I've never heard of. Let's just hope Baek doesn't sit next to Maddux on the bench. Go Cubs go,Go Cubs go,Hey Chicago, whaddya say,The Cubs are gonna win today!Back in 1984, that was the theme song for the best Chicago Cubs team in decades.Of course, that team made it all the way to the National League Championship Series; only to win the first two games and lose three straight to the Padres … who went on to lose the World Series to Detroit. As the Cubs begin a three-game series in San Diego tonight at Petco Park, this is arguably their best team in a century. And, yes, it has been a century since the Cubs won their last World Series in 1908.It’s interesting that the Cubs have won seven straight games, all against the Weak Weak West of the NL (three vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers; four vs. the Colorado Rockies.)Alfonso Soriano is certainly playing like a Most Valuable Player … but we can’t call him an MVP candidate since every player is technically a candidate for the award.Derrek Lee is having a great year, Japanese import Kosuke Fukudome is off to a hot start, a

With the victory the Cubs set a new-season high with their 7th win in a row and for the first time since 1984 they posted consecutive homestands with 7 or more wins....a 15-2 record in the last 17 at the Friendly Confines. The last time the Cubs posted at least 7 wins without a loss during a homestand was in April 1970 when Ron Santo and company went 10-0. The Cubs came from behind to pickup the win for the 6th game in a row. The Cubs jumped out to an early lead but after falling behind in the top of the 4th, they recaptured the lead in the bottom of the inning. Winning is boring. Let's play a game. Where were you one year ago today? I can tell you where, watching this, possibly the best thing ever to happen in Chicago baseball history, and laughing hysterically: Get your filthy paws off me, you brute! (Of course, I can't post the video because MLB has gone and removed all the videos off youtube, as apparently some people didn't obtain the express written consent of major league baseball before posting.) That's right kids, this weekend is the anniversary of the would-be cage match in the dugout; which might have been more interesting if it wasn't such a rout. I'll bet most of you think the fight started when Z got fed up with Barrett's many brain-dead plays behind the plate, don't you? Not so. In fact, the seeds of the throwdown were planted well before the game started, during batting practice. Don't tell me you haven't seen him, I left 'Good Luck Gary' right on that bench! He's Baaaaaaack. First, let's dispense with the niceties. We all know that Glendon Rusch had a blood clot in his lung. We all know that this was a very serious condition that very easily could have killed him, and we're all very glad that he's healthy and happy to able to return to his chosen profession; thereby making him, once again, fair game. That said, he really really stunk last time he pitched for us, he was even Novoa-esque, and if you guys think I've forgotten about "Gascan Glendon" or the "Chubby Exacerbator," you can think again. So today Gascan returns to Chicago, fresh off being released by the Sunshine Home for Aging and Retired Cubs Pitchers, otherwise known as the San Diego Padres. Sadly, for Gascan, he and his 6.41 ERA are about to face a one-man wrecking crew by the name of Ryan Dempster. And no, I can't believe I said that, either. But it's true. Welcome home, Gascan.
